3.8 2012 edition. Murky amber coloured beer with direct disappearing head. Aroma of canned fruit and sugar candy. Taste of vanilla, marmalade, sugary and boozy. Only downside was the price.
4.1 Thank you for sharing people! 2013 Vintage. Sampled 330 ml. bottle @ “Gouda Winterbier Festival 2016”. Hazy amber with an off-white head. Nose is warming, very sticky sweet candy, orange peel, sugar, light cloves, touch vanilla. Taste is weird cacao, sugar, cloves, warming orange peel, raisin, dates, cloying, grain, spices cake. Low carbonation, sugar & orange peel body. Minor odd flourishes but quite nice if you are into strong, sugary, low carb. vintage brews like this (I am).
3.6 Newest rating: 0.33 l bottle from 'Slijterij 't Fust', 2012 vintage, cellared for about four years. Slightly hazy, ruby with a thin, beige layer. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity and just a little oxidized aroma of molasses, caramel, raisins, figs and a touch of tea. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, gently fruity and a little oxidized taste of molasses, raisins, vanilla, caramel and dates, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, slightly boozy and a little spicy finish. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel, almost flat. Held up nicely, not too deep but very pleasant. Newer rating: Sampled from tap at the brewpub. Clear, dark brownish amber with a white to tan head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, honey, nuts and brown sugar. Sweetish-malty taste of caramel, brown sugar, nuts and some hiney, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, a little spicy finish. Medium to full body, creamy and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft to average carbonation. Nice, a bit rounder than the standard version. (7/4/7/4/14/3.6) Old rating: From bottle at Winterbierfestival Gouda 2016. Clear, golden amber. Sweetish-malty, slightly sourish aroma of caramel, brown sugar, honey, vanilla and some oak. Sweet-sourish taste of caramel, brown sugar, honey, vanilla and some oak, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and minimally astringent mouthfeel, flat. Very nice! (7/3/7/4/14/3.5)
3.7 Bottle sampled at PINT Winterbier festival Gouda 2016. Dark amber with orange hue and offwhite head. Grapes, rum raisins, sweet orange candy, roasted almond, light minty herbs. Over medium sweet packing a strong alcoholic punch. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Pleasant experience!
3.8 Pint Winterbierfestival, Gouda 2016.
3.5 Bottle sample at PINT Winterbierfestival ’16. Deep amber colour, thin white head. Aroma is sweet, raisins, fruity, malty, alcohol, caramel. Flavour is sweet, light spicy, malty, raisins, alcohol, some yeast, bittersweet finish. Full bodied, thick. Nice.
3.5 Bottle sampled at Winterbierfestival Gouda. Murky brown with small beige head. Sweet grains, grapes, red wine, marzipan, light leaves, peach, grape soda. Quite sweet with medium bitterness. Full bodied.
4.0 Bought this one at Oersoep beer fest 2015. Dark caramel colour with not much head. Smells of caramel and molasses and sweet malts, and also of piney hops. The taste is quite nice, like the beer’s been bourbon barrel-aged, with notes of caramel, bourbon and honey on top of a bitter hop body. A bit boozy, especially when it was cold (which was surprising for me, because, usually beers get boozy as they get warm), but has a nice warm and smooth mouthfeel.
3.6 (De Hemel Nieuw Ligt Grand Cru) Waxed 330 ml bottle at home, vintage 2010, served into a snifter, ABV 12% Deep red to amber colour on the body, some bubbles forming during pouring but the pop immediately. Aroma of malts, sugars, caramel, light dark fruits. Taste is sweet, with malts, caramel, some red and dark fruits but not as intense as I expected (and wanting), spices, light alcohol. Medium thin body, good carbonation. Not bad but not as good as I thought it would be either. I’ll look for a younger vintage though.
3.6 Bottle split at Arendsnest in der Dam, 27/09/15. Rich amber topped with a decent beige swirl. Nose is bitter orange, spice, sweet caramel, fruit rinds, light booze. Taste comprises rich fruit cake, dates, bitter orange, spice, rich malt. Full body, fine carbonation, oily feel, sweet close with light warming alcohol. Decent well rounded barley wine.
3.6 Bottle, vintage 2012. Dark orange, hazy color, small tan head. Intense aroma of caramel, raisin, banana, honey, peach, Porto wine. Taste is medium sweet with small alcohol bitterness at finish. Flavor is caramel, honey, sweet malt. Aftertaste is Little dry with burning alcohol character. Full body, oily texture, flat carbonation.
3.9 Pours amber with a small head. Malty, caramel, alchool, fruity, sweet. Flavor is heavy sweet with notes of caramel, warm alchool, Good
3.5 Taste this beer on sat. 06.06.’15 from bottle 33 cl. @ Jan Ober’s home. Clear amber color, with off-white head. Aroma: sweet, fruits, white porto / amaretto. Full body. Taste: sweet, fruits (abricots), caramle, wine touch, alcohol. Finish = sweet.
0.9 Draught: Taster: One of the most disgusting beers I have tasted. Rotten leaves, puke and cardboard. Drainpour! Want to give them a 2nd change, I don’t believe it’s this bad. Damn!
3.5 On tap @ van moll, Eindhoven. Beautiful dark orange colour, white creamy head. Very alcoholic, liquorice and sweet malts. Not too balanced. Medium carbonation, firm mouthfeel.
3.4 2014 version from draft. poured a amber colour with a tanned head. sweet barley, burned caramel sweetness, raisins, dried fruits, apricots, honey, some light notes of red fruits, think this would be better with some age indeed. it’s not what a real barley wine should be for my taste
4.0 Pours a small head that completely diminishes. Body is hazy amber, sparkles are visible. Aroma contains moderate malts (grain, molasses, a bit of roasted malts, cookie), light hops (flowers, citrus fruits), light yeasts (horse blanket) and caramel, sweet fruits like grape, raisin, prune and date, forest fruits, cherry, cola, alcohol and spices. Flavor is light acidic, then sweet , followed by sweet and bitter and finally bitter. Body is thick and syrupy, with almost no carbonation. It’s got the sweetness of the barley wine but it’s still quite fruity. Complexity is not very high but it’s quite good anyway.
3.6 0,33l bottle @ Pikkulintu. Pours clear amber with no head. Aroma is sweet malts and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malts, fruits and alcohol. Good.
3.4 2012. Aroma of sweet dried fruits, caramel malt, candy sugar, raisins. Flavour is sweet with a light bittersweet finish. Nice sweet and syrupy Barley Wine.
3.8 Bottle 37,5 cl. Pours a completely clear amber. Almost no head. Aroma prunes, sugar, dates, booze raisins, ryebread. Taste has lots of sweet caramel malts, the same overripe, dried fruits. So much date! Pretty high alcohol heat. Sweet beer with a fat, greasy body and no head.
3.5 Bottle. Unclear ruby amber with an off-white head. Sweet, dark fruityness and some butterscotch mixed with little bit of cookies in aroma. Some red berries too. Caramel sweetness, lots of vinous vibes and some dark ripe fruityness in taste. Bit of maltyness and even some bitters in the end.
Niet echt mijn bier -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
3.3 Poured medium amber with an off white head. Aroma of sweet berries and soft malt. Medium body, flavour is moderately sweet berries, light caramel malt.
4.1 Fles van 2010. Helder kastanjebruin.
3.9 Drank from tap at Cafe Jos with Kaspar 16-10-2014. Nice barley wine. Compelling taste. Like a lesser version of De Molen’s Barley Bomb: sweet taste with alcohol, followed by some bitterness in the aftertaste.
3.7 33cl bottle - Really nice looking. Appearance: copper coloured beer with a ring of foam. Aroma: Light sweet. grains, caramel, port, raisins, and a bit odd but nice floral touch. Not powerfull but very refined. A very sweet aroma in which the hint of smoke, chocolate and alcohol meet each other. It tastes also very fruity and sweet, but this is very soon followed bij the aftertaste of bitter cacao, and remains for quite a while. Taste: Some sweet caramelised malts and grainy malts followed ,honey, spices, a lot of nice floral, vegetable notes (Especially when you si it.)- Light bitter atertaste. medium body, sot carbonation, easy drinkable for it’s style. Quite good and better as the Standard nieuw ligt with the extra complexity.
3.9 Cupper dark beer with a smal white head, low carbonation. Smells fruity. Taste is also fruity and sweet. Afthertaste is some nice bitter and a caramel taste. Easy to drink, nice beer.
4.3 A nice, ruby-red beer with a dark brown layer of roam. A very sweet aroma in which the hint of smoke, chocolate and alcohol meet each other. It tastes also very fruity and sweet, but this is very soon followed bij the aftertaste of bitter cacao, and remains for quite a while.
3.4 Bottle from Kris Wines, Grand Cru 2009. Murky chestnut brown, no head, hardly any carbonation. Nose is fusty, musty, grainy, honey, bees wax, fortified wine, alcohol, dried fruit apricot, bit of caramel, but mainly barley grain and barley sugar. Taste is grainy, musty grain, alcohol, honey, spicy, dried fruit apricot, caramel, barley sugar. Taste has quite a warming alcohol burn, although it’s a little musty and flat tasting for me. Has a fortified wine or vinous aspect too.
