4.1 20/II/16 - 33cl bottle @ RBBWG V (Ben’s place) - BB: n/a, bottled: 9/VII/13 (2016-229) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle! Little hazy purple beer, small irregular beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, caramel, vanilla notes, malty. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sourish start, some caramel, vanilla. Aftertaste: sourish, vinous, malty, caramel, vanilla.
3.7 0.33 l bottle at RBBWG 2016 in Antwerpen. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity aroma of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and some red grapes. Sweet, fruity-malty taste of honey, caramel, vanilla and red grapes, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately alcoholic and warming finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily mouthfeel. Good!
3.7 Bottle. Pours a dark amber with medium beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is port, wood, caramel, toast. Medium mouth, candy sugar, caramel, boozy finish, very good.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a minimal off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, raisins and oak. Flavor was sweet and malty with caramel, dried fruit, oak, red wine, toffee and raisins. Sticky syrupy texture, full body flat carbonation.
3.9 330 mL bottle. 2009 vintage. Can’t remember where I got it. Trade probably. Hazy, reddish brown. Just a ring of tan head. Fruity aroma, with a touch of something that’s very pleasant, but which I can’t place. The flavour is sweet, as some of the alcohol seems to have faded. Good sweet, though. Complex sweet. As if caramel and brown sugar and candi sugar and molasses and maple syrup have all gotten together and are having a party. But it is not overwhelming, or even cloying. Barrel effects are almost gone. I’d love to try this one fresher. My bad.
4.2 Thuis, fles. Gedeeld met Mrk. Kastanjes, leer, olie, rozijnen, roggebrood, caramel. Super zacht en heerlijk zoet. Hoppig ook maar wordt overspoeld met dikke caramel. Backlog from 2015/09/21.
4.6 Grande birra per intenditori con forte sapore di brandy Bordeaux. Schiuma poco persistente, alto tasso alcolico retrogusto acidulo ben equilibrato con sentori di fiore e malto. Una esperienza unica.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a deep light brown body with soft red tint and super light lacing. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky with notes of sweet sugar, plum, butterscotch, caramel, oak, wood, barley, dark fruit - prune and cherries. A bit too sweet overall, but not bad. 2011 vintage. Shared wiith Scarlett. Pours a deep reddish mahogany. Nose is maple, molasses and sweet potato. Mouthfeel is thick and super sweet with notes of sweet maple, wet oak, wine barrel and syrup.
4.3 I always have trepidation’s when rating beers like this. Barley wine? Check! Barrel aged? Check! This is like beer porn, where things are too good to be true. Now to the rating... Fantastic beer to end the night on, massively high on alc to put me to sleep, but artfully hidden under pillows of velvety goodness that tantalise the tastebuds. Strawberries come to mind throughout this beer - that and how friggin awesome it is.
3.8 Aroma and taste are quite unique for beers. Wine flavours with some sweetness. Medium palate. Very light feel for this abv. Good tasting unique beer.
3.7 Bottle. Mahogany brown color, tanned head. Aroma has red wine, malts, sweet malts. Balanced taste, red wine notes, oak, caramel and malty.
3.8 Bottle.Pours dark amber almost no head,Aroma is sweet, berries, some wine, caramel, butterscotsch. Taste is sweet, liqueur like body, malty, caramel, sweet berries, somekind of berrie syrup.Full body. Good beer. Well hidden ABV.
3.9 330ml bottle. Dark copper with a ring of head. Huge wine barrel smoothing over the aroma with much red berries. Little peppery spice. Thick, sweet and syrupy like the base beer. Great barrel again. Good drinkability. A bit one-note but that note is very refined.
4.4 Bottle shared at a tasting at Guinn’s thanks to Casey! Pours a very dark amber with thin to no head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits, raisins, slight oak. Slight smoke/burnt notes. Flavor follows and is pretty sweet. More oak with light tartness. Really great beer. Thanks so much, Casey!
4.2 bottle at home, new batch from 2014. poured a poured a dark amber colour with a dark red shade to it. leaving a oily creamed colour ring on top. sweet barley notice, caramel, toffee, oak, red grapes, wine, sweet raisins, red fruits and slight vineous in the nose, creamy mouthfeel. getting some slight hint of smoke in the end aswell. not as vineous in the taste as the nose was expecting. very full bodied and creamy mouthfeel! lot’s of dried fruits in there as well. also some dried apricot. very good!
4.8 Pours hazy amber with no head at all. Aroma is fruity, sugary, caramelly and a tad alcoholic. Some vinous notes too. Quite massive if you ask me. Wow. Taste is incredibly sweet with some beautiful fruity and vinous, woody, undertones. Clear notes of oak, grapes, vanilla and dried fruits. Long lingering caramel kick from the beginning, evolving towards a slight bitterish, sweetish and remarkably soft and smooth finish (alcohol is extremely well hidden). The caramel sweetness lingers long and goes accompanied with a nice soft warmishness in the end. Beautiful smooth brew. Nice full body, sticky, somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Incredibly well balanced, just like the original B&G. Massive all over the way again. The vinous notes work out absolutely fantastic in terms of taste and thickness, giving it just that bit more intensity. Truly a world class barley wine gem.
4.2 0,33L bottle (from Koht, Tallinn), bottled 19.12.2014. Pours copper without head. Aroma is malt, caramel, toffee, red wine, raisins. Flavor is sweet and sour, toffee, caramel, fruits, red wine, raisins. Finish has some warming alcohol. Overall: great brew.
3.8 330ml bottle (thanks martjoobolut). Clear copper color. Sweet, caramel, raisins, alcohol in aroma. Aroma is bit thinner than non-BA version. Caramel, raisins, roast, bit of dried apples in taste. No alcohol detected in taste. Bit sour, but omg those woody wild raisins in aftertaste. Fantastic!
3.7 330ml bottle - thanks martjoobolut First aroma was alas pure alcohol. However, after that it’s massively raisiny, really nice. Lighter palate than non-BA, almost actually light. Malts hide behind the raisons and dried fruits. Balance is just right for a sipper. Finish has a nice ix of the dried fruits, raisins, malts, and even bitter hops. Damn good.
3.8 Brown beer, almost no head. Nose is thick malt and booze, caramel, bread notes, sweetness, wine. Flavor is winey, woody, bready, malty, caramel, dried fruit. Tart notes, wood an caramel in the finish. Vinous mouthfeel. Interesting stuff.
4.0 February 2015 - 330ml bottle at home in Richmond as 'De Molen Bommen & Granaten Bordeaux', bottled Jan 2013 at 15.2%, red wax. Dark brown, orange tinge, still, clear, small white head. Aroma is sickly strawberry jam, oxidation, sherry. Body is medium, touch of carbonation, slightly foamy, tooth-coating sugar. Taste is very sweet, strawberry jam, caramel, strawberry cream chocolates, no alcohol coming through at all. HUGE sweet beer. Nice flavours, but way too sweet. If you like eating strawberry jam from a spoon, with sugar sprinkled on top, then you’ll love this one. (6-4-7-4-16=3.7) October 2017 - Bottle share in Hackney. This is 5 years old. This is like some sort of liquid jam with a wine-like finish. Unashamedly sweet but it's developed quite well with age. (8-4-8-4-16=4.0)
3.5 Tap at Kaapse brouwers. Dark copper with barely any head. Yoghurt, sweet grains and dough, cognac, spices, marzipan, cooked vegetables. Sweet with light milky sour and vegetal bitter finish. Full bodied.
4.2 33cl waxed bottle. It pours a deep ruby almost brown color with a minimal tan head. Aroma is sweet and lightly roasty with notes of dark chocolate, red wine, wild berries, red fruit marmalade. Taste is big bold juicy and extremely sweet and tasty. Bi notes of red wine, ripe fruits, tangy red berries, marmalade, chocolate sponge and light liqueur. Not boozy, hides the ABV very well. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, big bold bastard of a beer, me like it
3.2 Thanks Brad! Orange / copper body with an off-white head. Aromas of cotton candy, orange, butterscotch, alcohol. Sweet, boozy. Elegance emerges mid to late palate with a smooth finish. Still, too sweet and unabashed. Fruity elixir.
3.7 Pours murky dark amber. Aromas of caramel, toffee, raisins, funk. Taste is caramel, toffee, raisins, funk, roasted barrel notes. Mouthfeel is smooth with no carbonation.
3.7 Pours murky light brown no head Aromas of caramel, wine barrel, spices Taste has loads of caramel, vNilla, barrel,
3.8 Pours murky brownish with minimal head. Aroma of toffee, caramel, red wine barrels, light red grapes. Taste is sweet and boozy, butterscotch and toffee, not much red wine here to balance it. Body is rich and creamy with smooth soft carbonation.
3.7 Bottle at Craig’s. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of red wine, red fruit, boozy. Taste is oaky, red wine. Finishes boozy, oily.
