4.7Bottle as a trade from Kraddel. Many thanks! Black, brown foam. Soft carbonation. Roasty, coffee, wood, cognac, vanilla, caramel. Very well balanced stout. Bitter, roasty along with the sweetness from the barrel ageing. Wonderfull! Best beer I drank this year!
4.5330ml bottle at Jamey’s (thx a lot, man!!!). Pours a very dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Aroma and taste are very complex: cognac, marshmallow, resin, burnt malt, caramel, roasted sunflower seeds, dark fruits, figs, some coffee and black chocolate notes. Coffee with milk, roasted seeds aftertaste. Perfectly done beer!
4.32012 bottle at home. Smell is cognac, alcoholic, with a small hint of fruity sourness. Taste is chocolate, lots of cognac, coffee. Had this one twice. The second I tried was quite oxidized so I’m not ging this a very high score, it would have earned the first time.
4.2Deep dark beer with creamy brown head. The creamy roasted flavor is thick and carry the vanilla bourbon softly. Very enjoyable.
3.2Little 18cl bottle pours an oily, translucent deep brown, basically no head. Nose has wet wood, burnt wood, a little mushroom, some German chocolate cake. Flavor is chocolate, watery coffee, earthy tree bark, cola, vanilla. Finishes watery, but it is a bit old. Just a bit too far gone.
4.0Mooie zwarte kleur met een kleine kraag. Ruikt vol, drop, alcohol. Smaakt vol, vanille, drop.
4.0Bottle shared by Jack, thanks! Pours black wit h a grayish brown head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has a good amount of booze and cognac with a lot of sweet dark grains, some chocolate and a bit of roasted malts. Flavor has sweet dark grains with some chocolate, a bit of roasted malts and a bit of cognac backing.

4.2330ml bottle enjoyed @ home, thanks to Yeaster. Pours very dark brown with a small brown head, some floaties. Aroma is light roasted malt, chocolate, wood, dark dried fruits, alcohol, vanilla and charred. Flavour is medium sweet and light bitter. Full bodied, smooth texture, soft carbonation. Finish is sweet and velvety.
4.2Bottle, thanks Vaiz! pour is dark brown with dark head. Very smooth booze and marshmallow, excellent beer
4.3(Bottle, from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam) Black colour with lasting, creamy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of strong sweet black coffee, dark chocolate, treacle, cacao and hints of oak wood. Malty, roasted, fruity taste with strong black coffee, dark chocolate, liquorice, cacao, treacle, hints of cognac and a generous coffee/cacao bitterness in the finish. Full body, smooth and velvety mouthfeel. A certain sweetness coming through. A bit sweeter than the original H&V. Lots of taste, and all in exceptional balance. Excellent beer!
4.2Rate No. 666. 330ml bottle at home, v2012. Dark brown almost black color with beige brown head. Aroma is malty, light roasted, chocolate, light dark fruits, wood, cognac alcoholic. Sweet and light bitter taste, chocolate, cognac, fruits, wood. Almost full, silky creamy body with soft carbonation.
4.1Bottle thanks to Nick. Pours a dark brown with smal beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is cognac, wood, and vanilla. Slick mouthfeel, dark chocolate, wood, vanilla, nice booze. Very nice.
4.5Tick number 200, got this in a trade with BenH - thanks to you I can have this epic beer at a rating milestone! Pours deep black with a minimal tan colour head which soon fizzes away. Aroma is sweet molasses then my nostrils were stung by the Cognac which was then followed by rich dark chocolate and coffee hints. Taste is initially spicy cognac which is then followed by sweet candi sugar and some creme brulee. Full bodied with a slick mouthfeel.
3.9Tap. Black with a beige head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, coffee, cognac, oak, chocolate and dark fruit.
3.92012. Thinnish dark brown pour. Nose is smokey meats, char, smooth cognac as it warms. Taste is super smooth cognac, dark fruits, light oxidation, sherry. Soft smooth mouthfeel, very low carb.
4.7I have drank easily a dozen of these now and I never cease to be blown away each and every time.
Smell is a mix of molasses / brown sugar, a bit of roast, and a fruity booze note that alludes to a robust spirit side of things.
Taste is a beautiful blend of a smooth, chocolatey roast, dark & red fruit along with vanilla sweetness, and the body is medium thickness and silky.
3.4[6844-20141013] Bottle. Charred wooden burlap aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting foamy light brown head. Soy sauce and burnt wooden toast flavour has a tar-like oil finish. Full body is especially slick. Interesting. (7/3/7/3-/14) 3.4
(Bottle #800)
4.0Black colour with minimal and quickly dissipatig beige head. Aroma has notes of toastd malts, licorice, burnt wood, light caramel and chocolate. Flavor is toasty, some roasted hints as well, coconut and some vanilla traces, ripe black fruits, some plumbs and raisins with coffee beans. Slightly bittery final, some sweet notes, coffee and chocolate notes with a smooth mouthfeel.
3.8Bottle thanks to kbudd! Took some coaxing but I was able to get a medium head, all very large bubble with a 12 inch pour into the glass. Some chunkiness came out as well. Pitch black with a light brown head. Aroma is deep, dark fudge with sweet boozy icing; light vanilla, Booze soaked brownies. Reminds me a lot of BA speedway, but with less roast. Mouthfeel is thick, with an immediate chocolate and almost inkiness taste. Not sure how to describe it, but I’m guessing it’s the grapes from the cognac. interesting. Velvety and decadent as it warms. Alcohol starts to show as you sip and is only a light warming in the ears. Pretty damn good beer, but I don’t get the cognac influence as much as I would thought. I think maybe this would be just as well served in another spirit. The cognac doesn’t necessarily compliment any imperial stout flavors on its own. Very good beer, nonetheless.
4.1Rating #2000. 2012 vintage, black wax, bottle no 1089. Black, small foamy beige head endures and leaves full lacing. Aroma is soft malt, some musty booze. Body is medium, soft carbonation, a little foamy. Taste is chocolatey, sweet tangy dried fruits, brandy, some sweet coffee, dry finish. Very good.
4.2Dark & black. Smokey malts and alcohol. Bourbon whisky comes in at the end. Warms down the throat. Feels like a big beer. 2014 advent beer exchange. From Bryan.
4.2DWF; Bottle 33cl. The number of this beast: 350. Pours black with a small, creamy, lacing, lasting tan head. Nose is intense, roasted malt, lots of wood and brandy, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, dark ripe fruit and leather. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with a sweet lasting, heavy warming, chocolate, coffee finish. Body is full, texture is creamy, carbonation is flat. Thanks for this beast brought all the way from De Molen.
4.1DWF 0.33 flaske. rett fra de molen skattekammer. The number of the beast:350. Svart med brunt skum. Sinsykt mye aroma, cognac og tree. Malt og sjokolade, kaffe og alkohol. Overraskende mild smak,Malt kaffe sjokolade, cognac. Veldig god. God og mild ettersmak.
4.3Little bottle number 1315: been saving this for a special occasion and today is the day (16th Nov 2014). This will be my 4,000th rating, do not usually have a ’saved’ beer for rating milestones, but I have broken the norm and done so this time. Coffee liqueur aroma and initial taste, it then gets a little more complicated. The very dark brew with a thin collar and mini-wisp sat in my Westmalle chalice daring me to smell and taste it: so I did. Rich and deep body to this complex and interesting brew, dark fruits, booze, chocolate, mocha, coffee, vanilla, woody, red wine and port can be added to the flavours and nose. A truly great beer.
3.72014-10-13. Black body with a modest tan head that fades. Aroma is moderately alcoholic, good amount of whiskey like character over dark malt. Flavour is similar, wood and whiskey like alcohol up front (apparently its cognac) rich sweet dark malt base is pleasant but simplistic at times, the cognac covers up a lot of the more subtle fruit and chocolate nuances. Cocoa notes grow as you go, once the palate has acclimatized a bit. Smooth medium to full bodied palate. Rich, and pleasant for the most part but I find that the cognac and wood notes detract rather than enhance for me. Bottle #800 bottled Dec 2012 via trade with Duffman.
4.5Bottle from bytemesis, thanks Mike! Pours pitch black, minimal mocha colored head that fades to a ring. Very viscous. Aromas are amazing. Sweet cognac over chocolate, dark fruits, wet oak and toast. Taste is just as bold and balanced! Loads of chocolate/dark fruits. Creamy mouthfeel is full but not chewy. Flavors come in waves with an ever so present cognac sweetness, but with the bitter chocolate and tobacco notes. Fantastic beer!
