4.3 On my holiday I took two specials brewed by De Molen, which I drunk head to head: Hel&Verdoemenis Wild Turkey BA, bottled on 7th januar 2014 and their youngest brother, H&V Bourbon BA, bottled on 26th of April 2016. This one I rated one month ago, (score 4.3), Wild Turkey for the first time: I poured it in a half pint nonic glass: black color, clear, with long lasting tan brown head. Aroma: intense dark, roadted malts aroma, with notes of dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, vanilla, gentle bourbon in the background. Flavor: intense dark, roasted malts, with notes of espresso coffee, cacao nibs, dark bitter chocolate, vanilla, tannins, intense, but very well balanced bourbon note on second half, slightly astringent finish, with roasted bitterness in aftertaste. Body is full, texture velvetly, carbonation is low. On the label is writen 11% abv. I think younger brother will be very similar to older one in next two years....
4.0 Bottled 28 Jan 2013. Pours inky black, slick, oily, no real head to speak of. The bourbon and oak are very clear in the aroma, with espresso, leather, dark chocolate, vanilla. The taste has lots of nice vinous port wine notes, smooth dark chocolate, espresso, nicely balanced bourbon/oak, vanilla. Spicy hop bitterness helps combat the sweetness in the finish. Full bodied and decadent, very low carbonation, oily. Really enjoyable.
4.3 Black pour, small brown head. Amazing aroma, of chocolate, raisins, bourbon, with hints of dates and coffee. Full, round mouthfeel, with flavor that is rich and brings out more roastiness, with vanilla, fudge, and booze. Holy crap this is good.
4.1 Bottle from Barny’s. Pours pitch black, with a small light brown head that does not hang around for long. Pretty viscous looking stuff! Exciting aroma dominated by dark chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla/bourbon, as well as a bit of coffee and licorice (also smells quite boozy). Fairly sweet and very full bodied with very soft carbonation and slick texture. Taste is also quite boozy with coffee, chocolate, oaky vanilla and the Bourbon hanging around in a lengthy finish. Really well balanced stuff - a de Molen classic!
4.2 bottle @ home, 2013 vintage. Aroma is roasty and boozy. Taste is espresso, pure chocolate, roasty, boozy, a bit oxidized though, about 3 years later. A shame I couldn’t try this fresh.
4.8 Aroma: Coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, hint of bourbon. Appearance: Black, almost no head. Taste: Medium to heavy sweet, light bitter, very complex. Palate: Full body, creamy slick texture, soft carbonation, long sweet and roasty finish with touch of bourbon, little alcohol warming. Overall: Perfectly balanced, delicious, with great drinkability for abv, barrel aging takes original version to another level. World class imperial stout.
4.0 A: Dark black with a touch of dark dark brown, one finger light brown head that disappears fast. N: Coffee, vanilla, toffee, chocolate, marzipan T: Chocolate, vanilla, muscovado sugar, molasses O: Smells delicious and very nice taste to it! I like it!
4.5 At Mrk’s. Sharing my little 18 cl bottle bought at Plan B, from the vintage Molen closet. Brewed in 2010, bottled in 2011. Bottle nr. 1465 of 1560.We drink to the birth of Timo! Transparent colorless glass bottle with red wax head pours a darkbrown opaque beer with very thin tan head. Coffee, sweet roasted malts, sweet heavy bourbon, chocolate cake, vanilla, alcohol. Sweet and smooth, slick, dense and very tasty! In comparison to the Misto the Wild Turkey is sweeter and more dessert like. The Misto had a little more punch and seemed a little more complex. If I didn’t have them on the same day I might have preferred the Wild Turkey over the Misto because of the easy going sweetness. Still both are De Molen at peak quality. (13% abv version).
4.1 Backlog. Draft at Churchkey. Near black with small lite tan head. Roasted malt, coffee, ash, booze, sweet malt. Very good.
4.1 0,33l fles gedeeld met lion en jerommeke. Zwart net een bruine kraag. Geur en smaakdimensies ketjap en ook een lichte rook en tarwe toets. Mooi vol en koffie in de afdronk.
4.1 11% vintage bottle @ Carlsens Kvarter. Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, wood, heavy roasted malts, light coffee, sweet licorice. Taste is caramel and coffee, lots of licorice, bourbon, vanilla, notes of red wine / port!
4.0 Bottle. Pours pitch black with a white head. Aroma of Licorice, BA, bourbon, vanilla, roast, sweet. Taste Is licorice, coffee, roast, vanilla, wood, light choko, a Little booz. Wauw Extreme balance.
3.6 11.2 oz bottle. Black in color with an average beige head. Aroma is of bourbon, wood, vanilla, molasses, booze. Taste is of wood, oak, soy sauce, molasses, booze, steak sauce, oxidation and vanilla.
3.8 Bottle. The look is dark, brownish black in color, beige tan head. The taste is alcohol, soy, rich, sweet, raisin, chocolate, wood. The smell is chocolate, cherries, sweet, alcohol, ashy, raisin, slightly oxidized.
4.6 33cl bottle served in a snifter. Pours dark brown with a very short-lived tan, bubbly head. Aroma is chocolate, raisins, prunes, alcohol, oak. Taste is more of the same - very Christmassy notes with quite a heavy whiskey presence but very little of the typical buttery vanilla notes you expect with a bourbon barrel aged stout. Very little bitterness to detract from the rich flavours on offer here.
3.8 Bottle, poured into a snifter glass. Near black with a small brown head that fades to some spots of lacing. Aromas of wet oak, bourbon, slight char, roasted barley, vanilla, hints of coffee..hint of green peppers and olives. Taste is loaded with bourbon/oak upfront! Followed closely by notes of char/roasted barley, light chocolate, bitter coffee, molasses and light vanilla. Medium/heavy bodied with low carbonation. Finish is pretty warming with some sticky-sweet molasses, more bourbon/oak and bitter coffee. Solid beer.
4.0 2013 bottle pour at the beergeek shop. murky very dark brown and flat; loads of vanilla and coconut in the aroma, chocolatey notes, loads of vanilla syrup flavour, hints of licorice, tar, tobacco; pretty tasty
4.1 330ml bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, wood, cocoa, burnt cereal. vanilla, molasses, liquorice, tobacco and dark fruits. Flavour is sweet, roasted and light bitterness. Full bodied, oily and soft carbonation. Finish is dry, warming bourbon with a lot of roasted malt and coffee.
3.7 Courtesy toss via Pepe. 33cl. Pours a thin looking almost black color with little to no head. Nose is bourbon and roasted malt. Slight coffee and some burnt cereal. Taste is sweet, sweet, sweet. Some subdued barrel notes and a lighter roast but holy shit is this a sugary bastard. This is one unapologetic beer.
4.5 Flaska (2013) på Pipes of Scotland, Uppsala. Svart öl, nästan utan skum. Underbar doft av främst Bourbon och vanilj. Väldigt len munkänsla med smak av Bourbon, vanilj, lite värmande alkohol, beska och svagt rostade toner. Mycket god!
4.7 Back of the bottle reads 07/01/14. This was poured into a mini snifter. The appearance poured like jet fuel and had a dark brown color close to black color with a slim concave little head. Trickling light lacing roams around the glass. The smell started off with a sharp bourbon sweet/light hot weaving some light cocoa and coffee. The taste was sweet through the bourbon and then the cocoa and coffee combine nicely. A sharp yet sticky bourbon to coffee aftertaste leads into a sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. The carbonation was pretty mild but that didn’t bother me as I look at the date. Smooth roasty coffee tones roll over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a superb bourbon barrel RIS that I would love to have again.
4.1 33cl bottle at home; as H&V Bourbon Barrel Aged. Pitch black with almost no head. Full body with low carbonation. Quite sweet with subtle bitter tones. Roasted malts, bourbon, alcohol, black coffee, ripe dark fruits and brown sugar. A tasty BA brew.
4.0 Thanks to Zenkis! 2+ yrs cellaring. Starts with impressive standard IMP qualities - intense dark roasted malts, quite noticeable bit harsh (in a good way) wild turkey BA, coffee, oak, licorice. Quite intense sweetness with moderate bitterness, bit sourish hints. Too much yeast sediments in bottle bit lowers this one. Otherwise - awesome sippable brew.
4.3 Received this bottle in a trade with BenH, muchos gracis! Pours an incontestable black with a moderate mocha head which soon recedes to a bubbly layer. Sweet molasses, vanilla, creme brulee, dark chocolate and hints of roastiness in the aroma. Taste is somewhat hot at first but rather pleasant; vanilla, milk chocolate, cocoa powder, coffee and slight burnt sugar. Full bodied with a sticky mouthfeel.
3.7 Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is loaded with bourbon booze, herb/fruit. Taste was super bourbon and vegemite, quite a barrage of flavours. Complex beer. Quality, but just didn’t seem to balance the array of flavours
3.8 Muy oscura con poca espuma, un gas suave. Sabor fuerte a lo que creo que es cafe i regusto a toffe, no noto el bourbon pero si la graduación.. Un buen petróleo
4.0 April 3, 2015. Bottle at home, bottled january 28, 2013. Black with a very small tan head. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla dried fruits, chocolate. Taste is medium sweet caramel and dried fruits, soft bitter with a light bitter finish and sweet with bourbon hints. Medium to full bodied, very soft carbonation.
