4.2 Bottle at home. Black with a brown head. Aroma medium+ malty (caramel, roasted, whisky, coffee, dark dried fruits, smoke, licorice). Flavor medium to heavy sweet, medium to heavy bitter, light licorice, barrel, whisky, sour and fruity. Body almost full, soft carbonated.
4.0 The Third Beer of my #6000 celebration (#3 of 13 - six beers on either side of 6000 and the milestone itself). Pitch black with a nearly (or is it?) one hundred per cent opaque black glow, along with a touch of a thin light brown oily head that shows some large bubbles. Aroma of whiskey, alcohol, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mushrooms, meat, alcohol, oak and somehow more pungent liqours. Medium-bodied; Strangely not full-bodied and almost thin feeling at first. A lot of pure sugars and licorice flavours at first with a decidedly sweet flavour of honey and caramel along with a touch of anise and then the dry oaky and alcohol flavours show through - very subdued and elegant. Aftertaste finally shows the whiskey and pungency, but the sweetness is still there, and there is nothing oppresive or pungent about the alcohols here - strong, but masked by the plentiful sweetness from a complex amount of areas - fruit, caramel, caster sugar, honey and even prunes and raisin pit fruity and barley-wineish sweetness comes out. Overall, a very nice and elegant Imperial Stout that tastes more like an Imperial Porter and then almost an Old Ale or a Barley Wine (close your eyes for the last two and don’t think of the colours, just the flavour of the beer). Complex and robust, yet elegant and somehow at 11,0%, easy to drink! Great to sample and much better than the smell was indicating - but that’s to be expected with the quality that’s brewed here. Finally great to try, and if you see this around, pick it up and age it even longer than I did - this would probably be a treat in 10+ years! I sampled this 33 cL [black] wax topped bottle purchased from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam, Holland, The Netherlands on 17-January-2015 for €5,98 sampled at home in Washington on the other side of the Atlantic on 06-March-2017. Bottled on Date of: 02-July-2013 // Purchased: 17-January-2015 // Sampled: 06-March-2017
4.4 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.4 330ml bottle (?, ?) Dark, briefish beige head. Smells of rubber bands. Dirty old rubber bands. Some sweet whiskeyish wood too. Sweet smooth palate, shy of slick, carbonation low. Lovely mellow whiskey woodiness and rich birnt roast in the taste. Palate has a dusty dry bitterness, but that works very well after swallowing a slick swet beer. Could have done without the rubber bands, otherwise rather nice.
3.7 330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Black color. Medium size, brown head, stays. Alcohol, sweet, woody, tannins, caramel, cognac in aroma. Big aroma. Woody, sweet, faint smoky, caramel and herbal hops in taste. Smooth sweet mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Full body. Alcohol is present. Very solid brew.
3.8 Bottle, bottled 02.07.2013 (thanks fatphil). Pours black with beige head. Aroma is massive peated whisky, malt, roast, tar, sweetness. Flavor is sweet and bitter, roast, tar, malt, whisky. Finish is roast and whisky. Overall: obviously beer with stuff added, but i like it.
3.8 0,33 l flaske delt på RBHD-treff på Tau november 2016. Svart kropp med brun film. Kraftig fataroma med noter av umami. Smaker søtt og røstet med deilig bourbon toner. Kraftig smak. Flat og myk.
3.6 Shared bottle at RBHD, Tau. Pours clear deep ruby with a small tan head. Aroma is deep malty, tar and weak smoked peat. Taste is oily, smooth malty, lingering malty.
3.4 Shared bottle with RB/HD at Tau 01.11.16. Dark brown. Pale brown head. Aroma of cocoa, coconut, dry cigar box and too old Bordeaux. Similar taste, with lots of dark malt and roasted malt. Heavy drinking.
3.6 Shared 330 ml bottle at local tasting, Black colour, minimal tan head. Strong aroma of oak cask, tar and roast malts, a hint of fusel. Medium sweet and roasty and tarry flavour, notes of oak cask, not so much specific bourbon.
3.9 [12/08/2013] Bottle from De Molen Online Beershop: Dark brown body with slight, mocha head. Nose is caramel, toffee, molasses. Just lovely. Taste is similar of malts, caramel, chocolate and nice toasty notes. Creamy texture.
4.6 Uit de fles geschonken. Botteldatum 2-7-2013. Mooi zwart bier, lochte carbonatie, medium schuimkraag. Prachtige BA imp stout.
4.2 Bottle bought in Amsterdam 2-3 years ago, shared with Al and Jim, pours pitch black with small beige head. Smell and flavor are salted Dutch licorice, light peat, cocoa fudge, soy, dark fruit, Cracker Jack and caramel toffee. Medium mouthfeel. Perfect balance of sweetness and smoke. Gets better as it warms. Was dreading this beer on a hot day but we all enjoyed her. Menno crushes the dark beer game like no other.
4.2 Thuis, fles, gedeeld met Mrk. Rokerige coffeebonbon met lekker whiskey smaakje! Backlog from 2015/08/01.
4.0 33cl bottle at home from Biernavigatie.nl. Body is pitch black, head is medium, brownish, creamy, average lasting, excellent lacing. Nose is whiskey, roasty, flavor is mild roasted coffee, dried fruits, caramel, light smoke, molasses, licorice, whiskey, herbs. Medium to heavy sweet, medium to heavy bitter, light fruity sour. Finish is long lasting roasty medium to heavy bittersweet, alcohol is completely hidden. Full body, oily sticky texture, soft carbonation. Not too heavy dessert beer, a bit too sweet for me, whiskey aroma is present but not too aggressive, great one.
4.2 Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt notes with some sweet black chocolate notes with light whiskey notes. Taste is an incredibly well balanced mix of smooth black chocolate notes with some light roasted malt notes with some residual sugar notes, vanilla and the perfect amount of whiskey notes to round off any rough edges from this beer. Body is smooth and full with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. I wish I could get access to this beer on a regular basis.
3.8 Bottle shared at Leighton’s place. 25/08/2015. Huge thanks to Daniel from this one. Mahogany brown / reddy coloured pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is salty blue cheese, phenol, sticky sweet, vanilla and nail polish. Slightly odd aroma. Flavour is composed of salted caramel, dirty vanilla, oak, smoke, complex, smoke, choc. Palate is chewy, full bodied, , velvety, moderate carbonation.
3.9 330cl bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours cola colored with a small beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, oak, dark dried fruits, tar and some peat. Flavour is medium bitter and medium sweet. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation. Finish is roasted, light peated, dry and long.
4.0 Bottle shared at Leighton’s. Black wax. Just over 2 years old, 11%. Black, small ring of brown head. Aroma is fabric plasters, smoke, treacle, quite milky. Body is medium to light, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is smokey, some vanilla, fabric plasters, blue cheese, dry finish with a soft bitterness. The smoked base beer is taking centre stage, but the barrel complements it nicely. Good stuff.
3.7 Bottle thanks to Dan. It pours darkest brown with a tiny light tan head. The nose is rich, toffee, maple, dirty, light smoke, creaminess, milky bar, cocoa, vanilla and light charred wood. The taste is rich, oily, dark chocolate, tar, rich smoke, chewy malt, creaminess, spice, earthy roast and some alcohol boost with a slick warming finish. Fullish body and fine carbonation. A bit chewy, but rather nice. Pretty nice.
3.8 Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Daniel. Pours deep brown with a frothy tan head. Big smoke and peat aroma, some dry cocoa, roast. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with rich peat, charred meat, ripe dark fruits, vanilla, chocolate. Full bodied, chewy, with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish, very sweet, with burnt sugars, chocolate, peat, raisins. Very tasty stuff.
3.6 330 ml bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs; thanks DuffMan). Bottled on July 2nd, 2013. Looks good; a translucent dark cola with beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, peat, and oak with a discernible sweet Wild Turkey presence. Tastes like it smells with medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
4.4 Bottle. Black oily pour. Aroma of vanilla, bandaid, peaty smoke and coffee. Flavor of soft boozy cherry, vanilla, smokey peat, coffee, cacao, cinnammon and a nice full rich finish with some chocolate.
3.9 Bottle, bought @De Molen Beershop. Pours deep opaque black with a small, creamy beige film head. Aroma has sweet malts, smoke aplenty, chocolate, nuts, peat. Low carbonation, fat and creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has lots of sweetness, sugary, peaty, chocolate, light salty, mild roasted astringency. Lingering malty and oaky dry finish.
4.0 Bottle from Bierkompass, bought in March 2014. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla, oak and mild bourbon. Similar taste but with more bourbon. Also dark fruit and some chocolate. The body was around medium and the carbonation was fairly low. A nice one to sip.
4.2 Bottle, 2 years old. Pours deep darkness with thin coffee-like head. A scents of caramel, chocolate, smoked coffee beans - a fantastic mixture as you can nearly smell its sweetness. The palate is very dense, oily, full but at the same time it holds very high drinkability. The bourbon is definately there, giving it sweet bourbon malty scents and sweetness in taste. It suits it very well, does not overwhelm the beer. A perfect mixture, a very good drink, above my expectations. That’s a keeper.
3.1 Bottle @ tasting. Very dark with cream head. Smells smoked and funky. Tastes metallic, chocolaty, then sweet and smoky. Sweet/dry.
3.4 Smoke and rubber nose. Dark brown, thin yellow head. Rubber, tobacco. Full body, easy carbonation.
4.0 Bottle courtesy of jackl at Drake’s 10k tasting. Clear maroon color, bright tan head. Aroma of rich vanilla, subtle toasted coconut. Taste is rich dark fruit, vanilla, coffee. Very tasty.
