3.7 In short: A minty and slightly chocolaty coffee stout. Fun beer. How: Bottle 330ml, black waxed top. Consumed with some age on it (2 years?). The look: Black body topped by a large tan head with medium retention. In long: Bottle opened up with a huge “psssshhh” with foam coming out but not really a gusher. Nose is coffee and more coffee, and then surprisingly a bit of fresh green tea. Taste is again very much coffee-forward, also has a very clear flavor of those individually wrapped mint chocolate that many restaurants give after a meal, earthy sensation, yeast, green minty hops. Bright minty bitterness of medium-high intensity. Overall a fun beer, especially with that bright minty bitterness giving the beer a different twist. A pretty good beer as long as you don’t stop to think where the Kopi Luwak coffee has been through, and you also don’t want to think about the percentage of the air you breath that has passed through a butthole.
4.1 Pour is a dark brown, almost black color, with a fizzy tan head. The nose has a touch of roasted malt and then delicious coffee that is better on beer than real coffee. Taste is same, roasty, tons of well integrated clean coffee with hints of vanilla and chocolate and a light to moderate bitterness. Body is creamy and airy, assertive carbonation. Integrates the coffee extremely well without being ashy or peaty and overly bitter.
3.5 33 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20100727. Pours pitch black color with a minimal head. Aroma of licorice, bourbon notes, dark roasted malts and dark chocolate. Flavor of ashy chocolate, licorice, some vanilla and dark toasted malts.
3.8 Bottle @ Rasmus place. Pours black with a huge tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, plums. Taste is rich roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, plums, raisins. Medium body, high carbonation. 240512
4.3 2010 Vintage Bottle at the De Molen dinner courtesy of Vinny, shared with Menno &Tom. Pours a deep blackish brown body with nice white lacing. Aroma is lots of deep, dark espresso roast, oak and light chocolate. Mouthfeel is slightly boozy with notes of wood, coffee, espresso, and light dark fruit. A great coffee stout.
4.5 Bottle shared with Menno, Tom, James and some other beer heads at monks for the de molen dinner. 2010 bottle, poured murky brown, espresso and strong coffee aroma, tons of wood, dark dark chocolate, dates and other dried fruit. Roasty malts, figs, so rich and flavorful, toasty. Tom and the other guys were blown away just as I was, amazing.
3.6 4th January 2010 Opaque black beer with a mega frothy light brown head. Light frothy palate turning softer. Minerally dark malt that segues seamlessly into some smooth coffee that is really nicely judged. It’s unapologetic but not too heavy or espresso harsh. Finishes softish and semi dry and with a little bitterness creeping in. A trace of bubblegum sweetness is well buried in the mid. Decent and tasty.
4.1 Black with a big light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, heavy coffee, chocolate and alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and very bitter. Sweet and very bitter finish. High carbonation. 240512
4.0 Bottle from 2009. Huge head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are coffee, vegetables, roast malt, cocoa, chocolate and hops.
2.5 2010 bottle. Pours a thick black with a large head. Nose is super roasty, dry cocoa, some peat and charred wood. Carbonation is ungodly high, higher than the liveliest champagne ever, higher than the most tempestuous old Drie Fonteinen lambic. Mouth is almost hard to discern. Some dry roasted, ashy qualities. Messed up bottle.
4.1 2010 vintage 18 cl bottle brought back from Europe. The beer wanted out of the bottle with a large crack hiss from such a tiny bottle. I was careful to let it out by applying relief pressure to the cap enough to let out some carbonated foam. The beer pours to a black body with a tall, super lively rocky tan head, excellent lacing, and a sound of bubbles popping. The aroma is chocolate, dust, and coffee. Notes of chocolate ganache and espresso. I was a little worried about infection, but I can sense none. Lots of coffee and chocolate with some brownies and black tea. The palate is creamy and lively. Medium full body.
4.2 I have no idea as to why I never reviewed this but I have definitely had this / “backlog” – 2009 vintage 18 cl. bottle purchased @ Alvinne – consumed at home: black / very dark brown with a tiny brown head – smells like roasted malts, kopi loewak (I am going by the Brunch Weasel as far as the taste of that is concerned), slightly creamy, chocolate – taste is coupled with a smooth mouthfeel (might have used a touch more thickness) and a hint of that Molen milk-touch, roasted malts, kopi loewak, milk chocolate, hints toffee of toffee, creaminess leads to slightly bitter & touch dusty chocolate aftertaste, not bad – I did expect a touch more from this
3.9 Bottle @ home. 2009 version, courtesy of my secret santa. Thanks Mads! Bottle opened with a hiss and poured a huge, bubbly, light brown head and a deep brown appearance. Very rich woody, dark coffee, roasted chocolate malty aroma with a noted earthiness but very nice.Bubbly mouth feel. Slight burnt rubber, very roasty chocolate malty, earthy espresso flavor with a somewhat bitter, coffee finish. Dark chocolate, roasty aftertaste.
3.9 Bottle. Dark brown colour with medium-sized beige head. Coffee in the aroma with roasted malt and hops. Flavour is roasted malt, coffee, some bitterness and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied.
3.7 Bottle (not sure where I purchased it) shared with my dad 05.01.12 Pours black, this is quite thick and oily with a large foamy dense head, light beige in colour. Heaps of coffee and roastiness on the nose. Plenty of coffee and dark chocolate in the mouth, touch powdery (cocoa) at times, very roasty, flavoursome stout. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.7
4.5 Bottle at Cardinal. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is coffee, alcohol, roasted malt, hop. Flavour is coffee, roasted malt, hop, chocolate. Nice moutful. Vey nice beer i like to drink again.
4.1 A black beer with a beautiful, medium and light brown head. Aroma is strongly roasted, lots of strong coffee, some milky sourness and hint of vegetables. Taste is great, roastiness, coffee, balanced sweetness and bitterness; very tastefull. Taste isn’t very complicated and not strong either, but still very enjoyable. Full bodied, velvet like smoothy and very pleasant to drink. Tastefull and pleasant beer, velvety drinkability meets smooth coffee and together they built up the great alliance.
3.0 [bottle] shared by Armin. Thanks! Pours hazy deep brown with a large tan head. A carbonated Dutch stout? Who would have guessed!? Aroma of lightly green coffee grounds, dusty chocolate, and light smoke. Flavor is green coffee grounds, lightly vegetal, dry, dusty, old chocolate. The finish is dry and gritty.
3.8 Bottle opened with a slight hiss with a nice carbonation, worried about infection a bit. Nice dark brownish black pour with nice tan head, aroma has notes of nice caramelly, milk chocolate like coffee, some hints of caramel, vanilla, toffee, hints of roast in there as well. Taste is a mix of bitter coffee, chocolate, hints of dark fruit, roasted malt, toffee, vanilla, slight bitter booze, finishes fairly dry, slightly gritty finish. Pretty decent.
3.8 Bottle pour from Armin. Thanks man! Pour is a slightly hazy very dark brown, with a large mocha head with fair retention and a bit of lacing. Aroma is booze laced wet coffee grounds and chocolate. Taste is nice coffee and chocolate, with a fair bit of oak and booze. Very coffee forward. Mouthfeel is slightly gritty coffee grounds. Nice.
3.8 Bottle shared by arminjewell! Dark brown pour, lasting disc of creamy carbonation and an aroma of a little coffee and green pepper. Flavor is great mellow earthy coffee, vanilla, lactose. The nose was a little odd, but the flavor was amazing!
3.7 Bottle thanks to Christian. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma is full of nice kopi loewak coffee with a bit of backing dark roasted malts and a bit of sweet chocolate. Flavor has a lot of roast with a really nice coffee note and a hint of sweetness. Nice and thick.
4.1 33 cl bottle @ home. Dates: brewed 04 April 2009, bottled 03 May 2009, enjoyed 14 December 2011. Gusher, had to pour it into two pretty large glasses. Black color, huge beige head(s). Aroma’s of heavy heavy roast, dark coffee, some vague fruitiness and something odd that’s hard to define.... also some ash retronasal. Flavor is medium sweet, heavy roast, mocha-ish. Alcohol is warming. Finishes with roast & ash and a light bitterness. Yummie.
3.4 Pour darkish black, with a huge, thick off-white head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, roasted coffee, mocca and burned malts. The taste is quite bitter at the start, but smoothly turne into sweet. Semi-medium body, with a watery texture.
3.7 Black bodied with light tanned head. Coffee, cream, dried apricots. Smooth but a bit watery. Somewhat sharp. Medium bitterness with long aftertaste but watery body. Bit disappointing overall.
4.5 Dark beer with light brown head. Plenty of fresh roasted coffee in the aroma and flavour. Reminds me a lot of Struise’s Mocha Bomb although this one is a lot more light in the body department. The aroma in this kind of beers always reminds me of jalapenos for some reason. Might be the kind of coffee they use.
4.1 Bottle at home from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Lively black pour with a big dissipating tan head. Wonderful coffee nose, with roast, dark choc, spruce and berry notes lurking. Flavour displayed similar traits in spades with subtle notes of vanilla and a little tartness. Some gently developing bitterness came into play towards the finish. Smooth, rich and oh so moreish. A real treat.
4.4 Bottle from De Molen. Almost black color with small beige head. Aroma of coffee, caramel. Taste, coffee, licorice, hints of rum, little bit sourness in background. Nice long coffee bitter finish. Excellent.
3.7 18cL bottle, from Alvinne Bottle Shop, bottled 14 April 2010. Pours very deep brown, nearly opaque, topped with a huge khaki head. Aroma of cocoa, tar, chocolate, and smoke and some dark fruit. Flavor follows suit with coffee slightly more intense than cocoa, with some bitter chocolate in the background. Medium to full body. Nice, lengthy cocoa and coffee finish. Enjoyable, and the small bottle is the perfect portion size.
3.7 Dark brown with a heavy, tan head. Coffee and chocolate tones. Bitterness, coffee and chocolate. Full body with a long, bitter-sweet finish.
