De Molen Nood & Deugd (Necessity & Virtue)

Sometimes things go wrong at a brewery. While brewing our Donder & Bliksem a mistake was made and we added a lot of malts that weren’t suppose to go in this brew. This is how our Bohemian Lager turned into a Schwarzbier. As you see, we turn our Difficulties into a Virtue.

3.5 Black to brown body, small light brown head. Aroma has chocolate and mämmi. Sweet roasted malt, some nuttyness and bitter chocolate on flavour. Nice toastyness, almost smoked. Good palate.
3.5 The head is robust, body black a bit red. It smells darkmalty, sweet, aromatic, a bit sour-creamy. The taste is intensive darkmalty, roasty, sweet, refreshing, chocolate, bit coffee-bitter. Good 12/12/11/12/11/12/
3.4 Dark ruby brown with a small beige head. Aroma is raisins, dates, grape juice, brown sugar, plums. Medium bodied, bittersweet on the palate with some tannins on the finish. Not as rich as the aroma was suggesting. Taste is dates, earl grey tea, chicory, hint of molasses.
3.6 pours veryu deep brown, good white foam, yet the first molen in a list that aint TO big of a foam lol smell is malty, sugary . taste is pretty german-ish, but still very nice. actualy, this might be the best german-ish beer i’ve had yet ( or in a lond time ) it has those malts, but a bit burned. no stout , though ! grainy, bit of caramel-sugar-sweetness, but the grains, malts etc are far more noticable . it actualy pretty ok ! i dont know if i had a schartzbier before ( have to check) but this might be an actual german style that is drinkable ! waaw !
3.7 Bottled, nov 2011. Dark color, short brown head. Aroma of dark malts, coffee, hint of licorice, some grassy hop, blackberry and bramble. Quite bitter taste, again the fruitiness of the dark malts. Although it is 1.5 years old, it still is very nice actually.
3.4 330 ml bottle. Bottled 17/11/2011. From bierkompass.de. Dark brown almost black colour with a tiny tan head. The aroma is dry malty, liquoricy and salty. The flavour is quite a like. Grainy malt, mild hops and spices in the flavour. Quite nice.
3.2 330 ml bottle at home - bottled 17/11/2011. Pours deep brown with a reddish hue. Aromas of nuts, raw earth, toffee, caramel, roast. Medium body with lingering sweetness and bready kind of wee-ish effect? Dry finish. Taste is malts and chocolate chip cookies . Strange beer, yet quite drinkable and enjoyable. Average aromas and flavour though.
3.4 Bottle from ABC Beers, Den Haag. Poured a dark brown colour with a thin tan head. The aroma is rich malt and liqourice, leading to a strong bitter flavour with coffee and roasted malt. For a "mistake" it’s not so bad at all!
3.6 29/III/13 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 12/II/15 (2013-280) Clear dark purple to black brown beer, irregular huge creamy beige head, pretty stable, adhesive. Aroma: hoppy, citrus, grassy, hints of mocha and caramel on warming up. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: some citrus, bit sourish, sweet touch with notes of caramel, pretty bitter and hoppy, spicy, almost peppery even. Aftertaste: lots of citric hops, bit fruity, resinous, very bitter dry ending, overall sourish, hints of mocha and cocoa powder on warming up.
3.4 33 cl bottle from de hopduvel. Dark brown with no head. Aroma of roasted malts, bread. Taste is a like ovolmaltine chocolate. Not bad. ***
3.2 Scura buona schiuma grossolana media persistenza naso cioccolato amaro tostaure cereali caffe piuttosto tostata in boca piuttosto effervescente amaro medio
3.5 Dec 2012 - Cold bottle. Some porter qualities, and some lager. Big chunks of sediment. A bit mild and watery at the start, leading to some slightly smokey and bitter flavours. Easy drinking. Less interesting than the other De Molens though.
3.2 Basically black, with sediment. Basically no head. Aroma is limited, there’s a bit of chocolate and toast. Much more flavor one you take a sip, with chocolate, toast, nuts. Some almost red wine like character. What sweetness there is is balanced by hop and roast bitterness and a little acidic tang. Fresh, herbal, noble hop finish. Unusual beer - imperial black pilsner? Refreshing though.
2.8 330mL bottle, pours an amber-tinged dark brown with shitloads of sediment floating about - doesn’t look that attractive because of it. Aroma of somewhat stale toasted nuts, German lager yeast and bready malts. Flavour is very similar, with the German lager yeast upfront, stale toasted nuts, cardboard and bready malt. Medium-bodied with the flavour being slightly more pleasant than the nose. Still, nothing special here - could use more roast, and without the stale, cardboard-y elements.
3.6 330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with medium head that settle quickly. Aromas of chocolate biscuits, burnt sugar, and dried grass. Flavors are similar with a note of raisins. Nice for this style.
3.1 0.33 L bottle. A brief big-bubbled tanned head, over a translucent deep ruby colored body. Low aroma level. Some sourish dark fruits, and a whiff of creamed caramel. Fruity flavors. Jammy, light sour-sweet with notes of caramel malts. Light to medium body strenght. Slick. Short malty-fruity finish. Drinks ok, does not stand out.
3.2 Dark brownish red body with a small, light-brown head that reduces to a fully lasting layer, good lacing. The aroma is a bit faint, but quite ok. It’s sweet and dominated by dark caramel and fruity notes, also chocolate and faint spices. There’s a lot of sweetness in the taste as well, but the moderate to light bitter rather long-lasting finish backs up the moderate sweetness well. Roasted flavours with caramel and fruits, the chocolate is further in the back along with spices. Medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation and a light dry finish. A good one that reminds me of the best macro brewery dunkler bocks that are sold as christmas beers at the Norwegian wine monopoly. But this is actually a schwarzbier? [33 cl bottle, enjoyed 14 months after bottling/10 months before BB date, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo]
3.1 Flaske 0,33l på vertshuset Skarven 15 Jan 13. Kjempedypbrun. Høyt luftig skum med litt farge. God, svakt krydret aroma. Litt søt. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken er mye krydder og blir litt tørr etter hvert. Svakt metallisk avslutning.
3.2 Bottle from realale.com shop on Richmond Road, Twickenham. A dark brown/red coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Sweet, dark fruit aroma. Tastes of dark fruit, slightly sweet, liquorice, some chocolate in there. It is alright but I was expecting something more from a De Molen beer.
3.7 Pours very dark brown with a thin foam head. Well balanced carbonation, nice choky aromas, toffee and roasted bread notes. I really thought it was a baltic porter. I realise it is a schwarzbier. Honnestly I cannot feel the difference so I need more training! Glasses up! Cheers
3.0 Medium beige head. Deep dark brown body with big dark lumps hovering. Roasted sugar and wood aroma with spicy caramel notes. Dry-sweet roasted sugar and sandalwood taste with lacquer, caramel, and toffee notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel, leaves little lumps on tongue. Dry spicy roasty caramel sauce and roasted sugar aftertaste with cinnamon and wood notes. Really nice, apart from those awful lumps. (0.33l bottle, wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)
3.4 [bottle--thanks, fonefan!] Relative weak aroma of dried fruit and noble hops. Nearly opaque, ruddy dark brown under off-white lace and a ring of large bubbles. Dry, cereal grain/pumpernickel flavour with raisins and tobacco. Assertive bitterness that quickly dissipates under medium carbonation and a dry finish. Light body, medium carbonation (low for de Molen!), clean, almost mineral watery finish.
3.3 0,3 liter fles@HOME.. Lekkere bier ook al vind ik niet dat het een schwarzbier is. de kleur is wel zwart. maar hij gaat meer in de richting van de Guiness.
3.3 Bottled. Clear very dark brown, small head. Chocolaty nose. Dryish with clean, rounded mouthfeel and medium body. Chocolatey with notes of coffee and grass. Mid bitter finish.
3.3 (330ml bottle) From Craft Beer Advent Calendar. Thin frothy brown head and a deep brown body. Nose of white grapes and plums. Somewhat dirty tasting - slightly tonic, some deep malt, a tad thin, some ashtray. Okay.
3.5 330ml brown bottle from Craft Beer Advent Calendar. Deep dark brown pour, a hint of red showing through. Thin layer of beige head with mild lacing. Nose is roasty, slightly earthy, some chocolate. In the mouth the beer is roasty with dark chocolate notes, background fruitiness and caramel. Finishes with some rich cocoa-y notes, some roasted bitterness and a bit of sharper grassy hop. Medium body with medium carbonation. Not a text book schwarzbier but enjoyable.
3.5 Advent Calendar #3. So this is what happens when you throw lager yeast and Czech hops into a porter? Oh apparently they went at it from the other direction. I like how these guys are experimental, but not in the "canned pumpkin pulp and fake vanilla extract" way. Chocolate on the nose, caramel and a touch of bitterness on the tongue, Saaz and lingering caramel on the finish. Cool. Became a study in lager yeast for me.
3.7 Pours a hazy dark brown color with a big creamy brown head that lasts the beer. Aroma is chocolate, yeast and some funky fruity esthers. Taste is a sweet cocoa, fig and yeast up front & then finishes with a nice bitter dark chocolate. Medium dry finish to this beer.
