3.3 Smoked beers aren’t my favorite but this ones got it going on. Definitely on the peaty woody side.
2.7 750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of light smoke, chocolate, and roasted malt. Flavour of chocolate, smoke, a bit of roasted malt - but pretty thin for an 8% stout. Leaves much to be desired, but decent.
3.8 Bottle at home, out of my newly nostalgic Maudite glass. God I miss my mTH glass, but it still is just out of my reach, mocking me on the bottom shelf on my glass cabinet. With my knee blown out at present, it is unreachable... Sad... Pours semi-opaque cola-black, moderate pale tan head, ropey lacing. Nose is dark chocolate, lioght brandy/alcohol, tar/smoke, and some light fudge notes. Deeper nosing discerns notes of graphite and dark berries. Flavours run to the creamy and smoky, very odd... Smoke, cream, pencil shavings, light soap, and tar in the mouth. Not as heavy as I was expecting, but still quite good.
3.2 bottle from nbutler 7/3/11. dark porter color with a small tan head. sweet scotchy aroma... bs, peat, roast, mild smoke and an unknown fruitiness. it tastes a lot like cola...mixed with sour smoke, roast and that weird fruit from the aroma... maybe a mix of peaty scotch and an infected porter....weird. 6/4/6/3/13
3.0 Bottle shared by a friend. Pours a clear reddish brown with a medium tan head. Fruity strawberry nose with some tartness and a bit of caramel. Malty and caramelly flavor with some tart fruit and a semi-roasty finish.
3.4 Small brown head atop a jet black body. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, bourbon, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, coffee, chocolate, melon/berry, some cream, light bourbon. Medium-full body, light alcohol burn.
3.6 RBAG. From 750ml brown bottle. Dark brown but not opaque, hazy. Very light ring of tan head. Nose has alcohol up front, some molasses, brown sugar. Taste has a roasty start, some dark bakers chocolate, finishes roasty and dry, little hint of smoke. Medium to full bodied. Light carbonation. Nice, mellow strong stout.
3.4 RBAG 2012 Brownish. Good pour, light brown tight head. Light smoke early but that fades out later on, meaty, raisin, touch of ash, bit of berry scent, cranberry, yay! The smoke in the mouth is pretty mellow but is tied in very well with the dry taste, weak coffee, but it comes across as a light weight. But with that said it’s a good medium complex brew for it’s mellowness. OK finish.
3.6 Pours dark brown-black with a thick tan head. Aroma is earthy, soapy, vegetables, yeast, dark fruit and sour. Taste is sour, smokey, Belgian yeast, and a bitter coffee finish. Nicely done.
3.8 Bottle shared by Dallas- thanks again man! A almost pure black color with a large off-white head. The aroma is sweet nutty and caramel malts and big smoke. A sweet cherry wood smoke flavor with caramel, yeast, very dry, some sweet sugars, very smooth. Unusual and tasty, has Belgian elements along with a bit of fruit and lots of smoke.
3.4 750 ml bottle shared at Mike’s place Aroma: smoke, fruits/cherries, earthy, sweetness/caramel Taste: yeasty, smoke, caramel, fruity, some tart background notes An interesting beer, not one that I need to or really want to try again. I did like the label.
3.2 Pours a light cola brown. Getting some barrel notes in the aroma. The first sip is very different. Lots of smoke notes a top was is a medium light base. A touch of molasses in there too.
3.2 750 ml caged and corked bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about an inch and half frothy tan head. The head stays around a while, and there’s a small amount of lacing. Aroma is kinda weak, the brew smells like dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, and a bit of smoke and coffee. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like dark fruit (plums, red grapes, somewhat tart berries), chocolate, roasted malt and some smoke. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit creamy with moderate carbonation. I think it’s an OK beer, but there really isn’t anything about it that stands out or would make me want to buy this again.
3.6 750 ml. Opaque chocolate with a lasting creamy sponge of foam. Nose is sourish cocoa, earthy rotting leaf, tart berry, and light espresso with cream. Tastes are tart berry, cream, cocoa, light dirty smoke. Finish is ashy char and bittersweet, dirty chocolate. Medium-heavy body is soft, tingly with acidic tartness, slightly watery, and has light-to medium carbonation. I think I got a slightly infected bottle, but it was still good.
4.5 Smoke, Charred beef, tobacco, wood and molasses nose, maybe even chocolate too. Dark brown, thin tan head. Tobacco, chocolate, raisins, and vanilla with light prune undertones. Cherries and wood stay on the palate. Medium body, carboantion is just right, alocohol well concealed. Sort of lacking in body and intensity and the smokiness didn’t seem to be a major factor. Balance and complexity are excellent, with superb character. I enjoyed this immensely. It’s even quaffable.
3.5 750 ml bottle. Flat dark brown, scant head, no lacing. Aroma of Hershey’s syrup. Taste is dark cocoa, very subtle smoke. Medium body. OK.
3.3 gentle smoke, milk chocolate. very dark caramel brown, creamy tan head. good smoke character, little old couch, kind of harsh. perhaps I held on this too long. fruity essence clashes a bit with the base
4.0 next to no lacing... big head, fades relatively quickly, black body... light smoke, relatively sweet, light roast, not crazy aroma like i expected... light smoke, creamy, fruity, smoke lingers, lots of dark fruits, initially kinda sweet... medium bodied, drinks lightly, carbonated... Fruity, nice, light smoke... Awesome beer,
3.5 Sehr malzig-frischer Antrunk, eher mild. Test vom 24.9.2008, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,11,11,12,10,12 - 11,60
3.1 Bottle purchased at Premier Gourmet. Pours a cola colour, with a nice tan head that is so quick to disappear that you wonder if it was ever really there. The aroma is without a doubt smokey, and surprisingly cola. Taste is very thin, and smooooookey man, there is roasted malt for sure. I have to be honest I was expecting a lot more, and that’s why I made this rating 300, and there is a certain amount of complexity to this brew that I cannot describe or do justice. However this really was not for me. I look forward to trying more from De Molen though.
4.6 Bottle. Drank just as the world was supposed to end. Pours a cola color with small head and coffee colored spiderman lacing...really cool web pattern on the top film. Aromas of honey, roasted sweet malts, toffee, smoked caramel, fruity floral hops. Taste is just as good with burnt sugar, chocolate, roasted grains, candy sugar, wood, vanilla, delicious hops. Finishes smooth and refreshing with a very soft flavorful mouthfeel. One of the best smoked beers I have ever had. De Molen does not make a bad style. Amazing.
3.9 Has de molen flavor profile, very lighty smoked I really like this beer a lot
2.8 Bottle thanks to papsoe. Pours a darkish brown with small tan coloured head. Aromas of dark roasted malt and just a touch of smoke. Flavours are quite sweet with froasted malt bitterness coming through on the end. Only the feintest hint of smoke on the finish. Very thin mouthfeel. A little underwhelming to be honest.
3.4 Dark dark brown, tan cover. Light smoke, roasty, chocolate arome. Taste is more roasty, dry astingency, smoke is kinda absent.
3.3 Sampled at Lithy’s Tennessee/Ole Miss tasting. Decent porter. But lacking almost anything associated with smoke. Lots of roast, but no smoke. Pretty bland and mellow, but very drinkable. Definitely overpriced.
3.7 Bottle, shared around a fire on Night 1 of BCTC 2010. Pours cloudy brown with a strong, beige head. Certainly has a strong, smokey aroma with some charred malts. Fairly sweet flavor dark malts, chocolate and peat. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes roasty and smokey, with caramel, charred wood and tobacco notes. Good beer.
3.4 I bought that bottle around a year ago and looking at the cork, it seems to be a 2007 vintage. Oops. Fortunately, no oxidation hints greet me as I smell this chocolatey, leathery, peaty ale whose opaque very dark brown body wears a quickly diminishing beige cover. In mouth, the carbonation is perhaps a bit agressive, but it cannot hide the body’s bulky nature. Torrefied grains cut through the soft sweetness and brings us into a rather bitter, though not all that hoppy finish. Smokey, tary aftertaste. A bold offering whose alcohol is certainly well dissimulated, but relatively simple for its magnitude. Straight roast and smoke with little hop or yeast character and not much malt/fruit depth. Nevertheless, at 3 years of age, it held up pretty well and I’m kind of an addict to smoked beers.
3.8 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Lots of carbonation. Nose is roast, bacon, BBQ and chocolate malts. Taste is nice roast, bacon, peat and chocolate.
3.6 750 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a medium beige head. The aroma has a strange, yet interesting, combination of dark fruitiness, dark chocolate, roast and peaty smoked malts. The flavor is much of the same: the peat is up front, with hefty dark fruits, chocolate and roast. The finish has some earthy hop bitterness added to the peat and fruits. Medium bodied, decent carbonation. I didn’t know what this was supposed to be when we cracked it open, but found it to be interesting.
3.6 (bottle - corked & caged 750 ml) Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Light smoke notes in the aroma with a sweet and roasty undertone. Good smoke flavor at the start that moves to a rich and roasty middle. Some sweet malts and more smoke come at the end. A bit thin but well put together. Smoke isn’t overpowering but definitely is noticeable.
