3.6 330mL bottle from International Beer Collector. Bottled 26/02/2015 Deep bronze body, hazy, off-white foam. Pungent nose - wood fire, smoked goods - ham & salami - rich dark toffee & treacle, vinous red sort of fruits. Palate not quite as thick as expected, drying acrid sort of smokiness seems to thin things out, carbonation somewhat low. Very intense - lots of smoked meatiness with dark sugar/toffee sweetness, roast nuts & biscuit, lingering smokehouse/bacon character, subdued bitterness. Balance could be better but plenty of smoke!
3.4 Süßlich rauchiger Beginn, spritzig. Dezent herb, trocken. Milde Bitterkeit, die Rauchigkeit sinkt. Spritzig, trockene Würzigkeit, geringe Süße zum Ende. Nett. 10/11/11/11//11
3.6 Intense bacon, smoked malts, a hint of citrus fruits, caramel. Hazy, dark brown, small, off-white, frothy head. Light bitter. More bitter orange, sweet malts, burnt caramel, more bacon, soft carbonation, full bodied, bitter in the finish. Nice Smoked Bock, quite complex in aroma and palate. Bottle from Hoptimism, Loughborough.
4.8 A dream beer for the dubbel lover in your life. Great collaboration. Lives up to all the hype.
3.8 Bottle - pours cloudy brown with virtually no head. Aroma is sweet and smokey. Taste is strong, sweet and smokey, perhaps with a hint of chilli.... very drinkable, and distint.
3.4 Bottle Aroma-smoke, sausage, baked potato Appearance-red, hazy, tan foam, Taste-light sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, Palate-medium body, slick feel, average carbonation, long finish, Overall-interesting
3.3 (2 years old bottle) Aroma: beech-smoked malt,caramel,bread. Appearance:dark brown color,small white head. Taste:medium sweet,flavour beech smokiness,caramel,bread,toffee,rather sweet finish,malty aftertaste. Palate:medium body,low carbonation. Overall:Decent I bet its much better fresh.
3.1 Dark brown with small white beige head. Aroma is tar, smoke and oak. Taste is smoke, licorice and raisin
4.1 Aroma of ham with plum and dark bread. A lot of melanoidins. Dark ruby in the glass with minimal head. Ashy, dusty taste with notes of tobacco, coffee and literally - burned malts. Little bit of ham and biscuits in the background. Long herbal bitterness settles on the palate. Sometimes lack of body, but overall it’s great beer.
4.2 Dark amber cloudy body with just a ring of an off-white head. Aroma of smoked ham and plum. Taste is pretty complex, with flavors of smokiness, roasted malts, and dried fruit. Full body, thick texture, low to average carbonation. Even though I don’t drink smoked bocks on a regular basis, this one was exquisite.
4.0 Pours very hazy dark amber. Just a ring of head. Aroma is something like applewood smoked bacon. Almost totally flat. Medium body. No bitterness. Would seems sweeter if the smokiness didn’t cut it. Quite pleasant.
4.0 Opaque/cloudy dark amber, no head. Glorious, glorious smoky aroma. Glorious, glorious smoky flavor, like apple-wood smoked bacon. Smooth and round. I would drink this for breakfast.
3.1 Brown orange, beige head, smoky aroma with smoked malt, roast, letils, smoky flavor, malt, lentils, roast, medium bodied.
3.7 Bottle. A- Beef jerky, cherry, oak, smoke, char. A- Brown color, cloudy liquid, tan head. T- Ham brine, smoke, slightly sweet, grill scrappings. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- One of the better smoked beers I’ve had to date. Not overly forward with the umami, bacon, and ham flavors I’m used to. A touch of dark fruit and sweetness and not too aggressive with the smoke either. All in all a nice smoked.
4.2 Totalnie pachnie wedzonka. Wedona makrela, sery goralskie, szynka szwardzwaldzka, kielbasa swojska. Jak w dobrym Rauchbier dymny aromat wygasajacego ogniska. W smaku wszystkie walory wedzenia. Troche nut debowych jakby bylo, przypominalo zwlaszcza kompot wigilijski z suszu. Sliwka wegierska glownie na zakonczenie. Wyglad to malenka piana splywajaca ze szkla niestety barwa metna brazowa.
4.3 Pours cherry red without head. Aroma is strong smoke, bacon, corn oil, corn snacks, caramel sweetness, wood, barrels, old furniture, some dark fruits. Taste is excellent. Hard to describe... Creamy, oily, bacon, sour and sweet, sweet dark berries, chocolate cake, chips, floral notes, whip cream, smoke sauna. Aftertaste is long and last with smoke, oil and sweet cream cake notes. Super, super beer!
3.5 330ml bottled 2015.02.26, pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Nose very distinctly smoky. Flavour has some mild warming, while predominant the smokyness takes over. Smoke flavour is a blend of peat and a hint of ashtray. Also some burnt sugar with a hint of vanilla.
3.5 Bottle from Denman Wine and Spirits, Vancouver Dark brown color, opaque, with medium head. Nice, strong smoke character; in the aroma it presents itself with some sourness, like smoked ham, estery; in the flavor I’s not supported by enough malth depth; there is enough residual sugar, some caramel, but not much malt complexity; it pays also in the final, having low bitterness. Not bad, but not a biting beer.
4.0 Rating #1902 - 2015.09.23 - Prep. beer for #CraftTakesSeattle - Pours a brownish-black with a decent tan cap. Distinct smoky aroma (peaty) Very unique body, mild alcohol warmth, predominant smokiness on the palate tempered with the oaky, vanilla toffee notes of the doppelbock, burnt sugar, and wood smoke dancing well together. Boozy, but velvety.
3.6 Bottle from the Real Ale Store, Newark. Slightly hazy relish brown colour with a white head. Aroma is the caramel of cooked smoky bacon, with a fruity edge. Taste smokey caramel sweet.
4.1 Nose is smoky, sweet toffee and maltiness. Appearance darkish brown with beige head. Taste sweet maltiness, tar-like smokiness. Really good brew!
3.5 Aroma: Medium aroma of malts, caramel, berries and smoke. Appearance: Turbid/opaque red/brown beer with a slight/medium beige head. Taste/Palate: Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel and berries; ends slightly bitter with smoke. Overall: This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. The aroma is mostly smoke, which I do not fancy that much. The head disappears rather quickly. The flavour is fine, but nothing more than that.
3.7 Bottle from De Hopduvel. Hazy amber brown colour, beige foam. Nose of berries, caramel, smoked meat. Tart notes, are a bit annoying but nevertheless not a bad beer.
3.8 Bottle. Hazy medium amber brown, light gold head. Assertive meaty smoke and slightly chewy malts, brown bread, molasses, lightly spicy. I was surprised by the smoke, but really ended up digging this.
3.8 Deep reddish brown with a good tan head. Aroma is smoke, bacon, dates, chocolate, brown sugar, hint of leather. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, meaty on the palate with an umami finish. Taste is smoky bacon, brown sugar, mesquite, caramel, dates.
4.0 Have to confess I bought it just because of the Janis Joplin song. Listened to the "Cheap thrills" album while tasting :-) . Brown hazy small head. Nose is ham, campfire. Taste just as anounced on the bottle "smoked dubbelbok-ish" Sweetness and smoked malt are balanced very nicely. Finish smoky bitterness. A nice surprise .
3.6 Bottle a red brown colored beer with a white head aroma malts smoke bacon fruits spicy and hops flavor malts smoke bacon frutis red fruits spicy and bitter hops in the aftertaste
3.6 Hazy brown, small offwhite head. Smoky, meaty aroma. Malty, smoky flavour. Caramel too. Smoky bitter finish.
4.4 Well its been awhile since I’ve been moved to rate a beer this high. This is jus good stuff. Big smoky nose, campfire and smoked sausage/ham. Meaty flavors, smoky, sweet caramelized malts, balanced finish, great palate.
3.6 Sample at Grünerløkka mat- og mikrobryggfestival 2015. Brown body with a small tanned head. Aroma is sweet and smoky, notes of yeast esters and flowers. Taste of burned caramel, leather, earthy hops. Lightly bittered, with an aftertaste of smoked ham.
