3.0 Bottle. First time having barley wine. Quite heavy, earthy Beer with a lot of spices.
4.2 Aka Mary Tap @ De Prael Houthavens, Amsterdam II 2018. Oranje geel diffuus donkergeel biertje. Origineel glas. 9-3-8-4-17
3.6 De Prael's attempt at English style barleywine, spiced with orange peel and coriander - which seems a bit out of place and very 'Belgian' in a thoroughly Anglo-Saxon style like this. Regular but thinnish, immediately opening and eventually dissipating, off-white, lightly lacing head over an initially near-clear but later equally hazy, warm orange-hued amber coloured beer. Bit unusual aroma of persimmon, tamarillo, cookie dough, clearly noticeable (dried) orange peel indeed, cooked carrots, whisky, vague coriander, moist cigarette tobacco, honey, cloves, butterscotch, pear, subtle background hint of chicken stock cubes (possibly the first sign of oxidation) as well as a whiff of DMTS (melting rubber). Sweetish and sourish onset with mild spicy notes, persimmon again, apricot and ripe pear with a cherry tomato-like edge, soft carbo, full and supple, slightly resinous mouthfeel but perhaps not vinous enough for a modern barleywine. Butterscotch candy- and dry cookie-like malt sweet body with softly toasted bitterish edges; some yeasty spiciness (phenols) in the end reinforced by (actual) orange peel spiciness in a somewhat 'refreshing' way, whereas the coriander remains subtle enough not to disturb me too much. Some earthy yeastiness lingers amidst the malt sweetness, heated by a warming glow of whisky-ish alcohol which adds more bitterness than the citrus peel and the slightly spicy hop note at the back, becoming a bit wry in the end. Interesting beer, enjoyable, but not entirely the typically sweet and spicy-honeyish, vinous profile I expect from an English style barleywine - if anything, this has the yeasty, malty and effectively spiced (coriander!) profile of a 'Belgian style barleywine', which is nowhere recognized as a style in its own right anymore these days, but can be identified with things like Stille Nacht and Bush Ambrée. Especially the latter bears notable resemblances with this beer, maybe the old Dubuisson range has acted as a source of inspiration here?
3.7 Great English barleywine. Not at all bitter. But strong and malty but well balanced. Nothing like an american version. De prael Amsterdam
3.0 Aardig zoet biertje niet bitter, niet heel onderscheidend.
3.4 @ Amsterdam 17-11-24 (backlog rating).
3.2 On tap at De Prael. Hazy amber with a small head. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, some yeast and malt. The same in the taste. The body was medium and the finish with warming alcohol.
3.4 warming beer. I taste not sweetness but sourness. high alchoholtaste, koriander, bread, caramel, marzipan.. not a commontaste. Not convinced about the taste but not bad.
3.5 Tight, off white fluffy head stayed on a hazy, highly carbonated, copper coloured body. Sweet malt, jam & cookies aroma. Medium to full bodied. Sticky syrup feel on the palate. Lots of jam, over ripe fruit, stone fruit, orange & a citrus back.
3.6 Bottle at home from Amsterdam a deep amber coloured beer with burnt orange aroma flavour is sweet ripe fruits hints of berries with carmel toffee malts smooth finish with alcohol kick
3.0 Uit fles, thuis. Bijna geen schuim, verdwijnt ook. Kleur oranje. Weinig aroma.
3.3 Appearance: Hazy burnt orange, small off-white head. Aroma: Caramel, ripe fruits. Taste: Ripe fruits, caramel sweetness, slight alcohol. Warming. Bought: Marqt (The Hague), 330 ml, €2.79 Info: 13/7-2017, BB: 30/4-2018
3.3 #1454 Bottle. Hazy orange body, small white head. Aroma of low intensity - caramel, bonbons, alcohol. Taste is tart, sourish-bitter finish. Alcohol, caramel, orange zest, candied fruit. Fuller body, medium carbonation. One dimensional, a bit unbalanced. 7,3,7,3,13
3.5 Bottle 0.33l. Cloudy, orange amber colored. AROMA- low, sweet, apricot, apple, pleasant alcohol. FLAVOR- slightly sweet, a bit warming alcohol, caramel, fruit, touch of orange. Full bodied. Good.
3.7 Prima barley wine.
3.4 Piana niewielka, opada do krążka i taka pozostaje. Kolor jasny bursztyn pięknie rozświetlający w cytrusową czerwień pod światło. Aromat słodów, świeże owoce, truskawki, poziomki, bardzo przyjemny. Smak, słodowośc, estry, bardziej schowane niż w aromacie, wysoka goryczka i niestety przebijający, lekko gryzący alkohol.
3.5 Draft - Caramel and sweet raisin with a touch of woody hop. Cloudy gold with a small white head. Raisin, some caramel and a woody light bitterness. Mellow and easy drinking for what it is.
3.7 Bottled, 330ml, aged 7yrs as De Prael Mary from Burg Bieren, Ermelo, Netherlands. Clear amber with slight white head. This proved to have aged into a smooth, full, fruity beer, some sweetness, some apricot and a hint of caramel but all melded into a wine like character. Lasting and pretty tasty. Good beer.
Beetje wrang aroma. Smaken van rood fruit, honing, koriander. Warme afdronk, redelijk droog. Middelmatige barley wine.
3.7 On tap at Proeflokaal de Prael, Amsterdam. Pours hazy deep orange, medium off-white head. Caramel, ripe fruit, yeast, sweetish. Light alcohol. Medium bodied.
3.1 33cl bottle at home. Appearance: slightly hazy pale amber with medium eggshell white head. Aroma: banana, honey, caramel, pear, spice. Taste: high sweetness and medium bitterness. Notes of banana, honey and spice. Palate: medium bodied, sticky to oily texture and soft carbonation.
3.8 Bottle from the brewery, enjoyed at Schiphol arrivals hall. Nose is orange marmalade, caramel. Tastes caramel, fruit marmalade, blood orange, fizzy, little boozy. Nice.
2.6 12th July 2016: 330ml bottle at the monthly Shrewsbury Bottle Share meeting, cheers Simon. Poured a misty amber with a wispy, white head. This is a very sweet smelling and tasting brew, something I normally like, this however did not do it for me at all, decent alcohol kick in the palate but I thought it unbalanced and syrupy throughout.
3.5 330ml bottle @ monthly tasting at Chez Sophie, July 16, courtesy of Simon. Many thanks. Pours hazy orange, thin head. Aroma is syrupy, fruity. Taste is balanced, yeasty, not massively barley wine-y in character and rather drinkable for the strength. Nice.
3.1 Sampled from tap at the brewpub at 9.7% abv. Slightly hazy, golden amber with an off-white head. Sweetish, quite spicy and a little fruity aroma of caramel, honey, lots of clove and brown sugar. Sweet, slightly bitter and quite spicy taste of caramel, honey, brown sugar and lots of clove, followed by a rather long, moderately bitter, spicy and a little warming-alcoholic finish. Medium body, quite effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. More a Tripel than a Barleywine, other than that okay.
3.6 Bottle. Aroma: plum wine, malt, sweet, cool. Taste: wine, malty, a little fruite, warming.
3.1 Bottle from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Hazy orange/copper beer with a nice offwhite head. Malty bready aroma, caramel, grapes, citrus notes, biscuits, some marcipan. Malty bready flavor, spicy, peppery, coriander, hay, floral notes. A bit strange.
3.8 Bottle (from firma bier). Pours hazy amber with beige head. The head stays. Aroma is sweet, malty, fresh fruits, sugar. Flavor is sweet and bitter, malt, caramel, fresh fruits, some carrots. Finish has some dry bitterness. Overall: good barley wine-ish brew.
