3.3perfect pour into my chimay glass. good abbey aroma, some bacon smoke character and some raisin. very dark brown with a creamy white head. dusty yeast forward, malt falls off quickly after the sip. finishes dry. 030211 330cl bottle with 1-2 years on it. Honeyed cereal and brown sugar aroma, jammy raisin. Murky dark amber, small lingering tan head. Little broken, dark cereal forward, dry dusty yeast, hint of dark cherry, but fairly compartmentalized on the palate.
3.1Slightly hazy brown with a red tint. Small foamy head that dissipated to a very thin filmand left little lacing. Subtle aromas of ripe bananas and raisins and a hint if sweetish chocoalte. Much stronger flavors - toasted malts, raisins and cherries. Smooth mouthfeel, well-carbonated, and a dry, fig-like finish with a slightly sour aftertaste that wasn’t too pleasant.
3.6This was my favorite of the 4 De proef Cuvees poured at the beer fest. A nice amber pour and a good tan head. A nice aroma of toffee, dark fruit, graham, and honey. Flavor follows in the aroma...good fruit, caramel, honey, and yeasty notes.
3.1Poured from the bottle into a trappist glass for drinking. Aroma of caramel malt, with a noticeable hint of alcohol and some fruitiness with a touch of grain; not a very strong aroma. The beer was a clear, dull copper-red color with a small, foamy white head that quickly dissipated and had little retention. Flavor has a touch of fruit, and is largely bitter and sour, not much sweetness. A thinner, light body with a presence of alcohol and lower amounts of carbonation. A decent beer, but not nearly as good as I expected.
2.7Pours a dark reddish amber with a relatively short lived head that is thick and tan. Nice Lacing.
The smell is what you would expect from a Dubbel, over ripe fruit and hints of banana.
Thick mouth-feel, nice touch of carbonation.
Good start but week finish. It get watery and the nice sweetness fades and is stolen away by a lack of aftertaste. Dates figs and the hint of a black cherry.
There are so many great Dubbels out there, this is really not worth a second chance.
3.6Pours deep gold into a snifter. Bright white micro head with good retention leaves slowly recedes to skim surface. Pit fruit aromas. Thick biscuit and alcohol from front to back with a lasting fruity finish.
3.5Tasting - Perfect Pour. Light brownish orange, thin creamy white head. Soft citric raisin aromas warm to hints of fig and brown sugar. Orange caramel flavors round to a dark fruit finish. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Decent stuff, but nothing out of the ordinary...
3.6From a 750 ml C&C bottle, this poured a hazy orange with a moderate off-white head and good lacing. Nose of ripe fruit, oranges, and banana. Fairly lively but smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is mildly sweet and the finish shows some bitterness. Overall very nice to drink.
3.0Jacksonville, Fl. - Total Wines - 750 ml caged corked bottle. Dark amber pour, very light off-white head. Fruity aroma with hints of prunes, raisins. Some mellow toffee notes, a bit of molasses, some dates and raisins, but all very subdued. Keep waiting for something to happen with this one. Not bad, just nothing exciting going on. Mouthfeel - even, smooth about par for the style. Did not spend a lot of time with this one it appears.
3.5Cloudy orange pour with a fluffy off-white head. Fruity esters on the nose. Slightly acidic cherry flavor with notable hints of hops and malts
3.9This is overall a pretty good dubbel, in appearance aroma and flavor. Spicy, crisp, but without any of the funkiness that sometimes gets me with the dubbel style. A nice brew, but not worth the $10.
3.2Caged corked 750 ml. bottle, no bottling/freshness date, (AN 71) on the cork, sampled in a goblet glass.
L: Sunburnt auburn with a rocky beige colored head that rose quickly before slowly sinking into a thin sudsy skim. The carbonation is quite active, it only takes a couple of swirls of the glass to get the head to rise again. Splotchy layers of lace rings the brim of the goblet, over time, the layers turn into lace dots.
S: Bright fruity aromas of apples, dates and figs, further whiffs bring out a blend of oranges and bananas. At the edges is traces of caramel, clovey spices with a minuscule pinch of white pepper, and baked bread. The alcohol is only noticeable by mingling with the fruity esters that waft into the nose.
F: Respectable mouthfeel, the lively, but soft carbonation lends itself a to mildly firm light body that finishes on a nimbly crisp note. I would have liked just a touch more creamy heftiness in the mouthfeel, otherwise, no real complaints.
T: The taste of Angelique can grow a bit tedious over the course of a bottle, it lacks the complexity of a truly above average Dubbel, let alone a first rate one. Watery sweet fruit flavors, dates and figs covered with a light sprinkle of sugar, followed by watery sour tastes of oranges and apple skins. As I near the end, spicy caramel and grainy bread tastes crop up, helping to soak up the watery fruit flavors. Drying specks of pepper and spicy hops come close to saving what is a rather bland and watery favored finish. Close, but not enough to raise my score.
D: Angelique is the last of the four Belgian ales from Andelot Proefbrouwerij that I purchased at a Trader Joe’s in St. Louis and I have to say that it is also my least favorite. The Dubbel style can offer a rich panorama of malty flavors to go along with a luscious mouthfeel, but for me, Angelique just falls short in meeting the expectations of the style. This bottle was cheap enough, but the taste leaves me with no desire to purchase another.
3.7750ml bottle from BevMo. Hazy copper body topped by a medium beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, cookie, some orange, light raisin. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, some orange, yeasty spicy, cherry, faint astringency. Watery medium body.
2.7pours hazy medium orange, beige head. faint aroma, cant smell much. this one sucks. theres some bitterness to the flavor that doesnt seem to fit. not very good
3.6Pours a hazy amber-orange color with a frothy white head that lasts a good while. Excellent lacing. Aroma is full of sweet yeast, citrus and floral hints. Flavor is similar, but with additional hints of tart cherries and a little bit of acidity. It’s a surprisingly thick beer that is a little overly carbonated. Better than most beers, but not a particularly great Belgian.
1.9Pear aroma, slightly musty, very coppery. Muddy ochre brown, thick golden head, and sheets of carbonation that rise to the top of the glass. Initial horehound and rotten apple jab that disintegrates into tar and charcoal. Musty od finish.
3.1Bottle. Brown translucent body with creamy light tan head that dissipates with only marginal lacing. Slight yeast aroma. Flavour is subtle with a medium body. Nothing really stands out.
3.5Medium brown body, small tan head. Flavor is bready and sweet, with fruitiness and a touch of hoppiness. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Very drinkable.
3.2Kind of a quiet, sessionable brew without a great deal of character. It pours a a golden chestnut body with a tightly bubbled head that reduces to a ring very, very rapidly. It has a yeasty, bready aroma with a soft malt sweetness and the suggestion of dark stone fruits. Pretty much the same with the flavor, although it’s a bit subdued. drinkable, but also passable... and probably won’t be repeated.
Binny’s Beverage Depot, Orland Park, IL
3.5Not sure this is the same beer, as mine says Dubbel Belgian Ale...no Cuvee. Label is the same otherwise. Pours a dark red brown with thin bubbly off white head that last for a bit then disappears. Aroma is bready. Flavor is dark fruits and alcohol. A bit more alcohol in the flavor than one might expect from 7%. Medium amount of carbonation. Not bad, but not the best example of the style.
3.6Hilarious, we weren’t the only ones who needed a strong man to open the cork! That baby would not budge...Anyway, this is a nice beer. Nothing outstanding, just a solid blend of raisin and pruny flavors with a rich amber/red body and substantial palate
3.3750 with a damned hard to remove cork. Pours a dark hazy red with a decent tan head. Surprisingly unaromatic for a something like this. I get generic yeast, a bit of sharp nutshells, maybe bread. Really, not much going on in the aroma. Taste is also pretty bland for a Belgian brew. Reminds me of a brown ale with its nutty sweet qualities. A bit of raisins are noted, perhaps milk chocolate. This is not estery. I definitely was hoping for something different, something more.
3.3I was expecting something more light yellow colored, oh well. Pours kind of a chestnut brown color with a thin off-white head that fades quickly to just a ring around the top of the brew. Not much of a nose to it, just faint hints of malt. Maybe some caramelly raisins in the nose to. I have no idea if this was actually brewed with raisins or not but I taste raisins. I also taste some pretty deep alcohol malt flavors in there as well. This brew is different and definitely not what I was expecting.
3.0Bottle from my sister and brother in law. Thanks! Pours a dark cloudy red bordering on brown along the edges. Little fizzy head that fades quickly leaving minimal lace. Nose is strong and sugary sweet--caramel, maple, marzipan, original flavor bubble gum. This is really not what I expected so far. Is this really a belgian ale? Flavor is a bit subdued when compared to the nose but strikingly one-dimensional. Some more caramel and maple and some faint yeasty esters. As chaingangguy mentions, there is a touch of acidity in the finish but no hops to speak of. Not my favorite take on the style but still a very drinkable belgian. If this was presented to me in a blind tasting as a belgian dubbel, I may have rated it differently, but oh well, I still think it lacks any originality to put it above its peers.
3.315 DEC 07, Southeast YeHa. 750ml bottle. Medium amber/copper color. Aroma of maples. Flavor mostly earthy. Is this a dubbel?
3.6Appearance: Pours a clear, reddish-hued body with a thin, wispy off-white head.
Smell: Fruity aroma scattered with notes of sugar, malt, and yeast.
Taste: Sugar-coated fruits and sweetish caramel malts. Hints of spice and citrus and day-old toast. Just a small touch of acidity. Bittersweet, fruity finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: I won’t give up on you, Cuvee Angelique!
4.0Pours brownish amber with a mostly receding light tan head. Aroma of toffee, apple, bubble gum, sweet malt and raisins. Tastes of toffee, and phenolic notes of apricots and apples. Mouthfeel is full bodied with lively carbonation. Pretty much in the dubbel style, I enjoyed it.
3.2One of the lesser De Proef brews, for sure. It’s a fairly indistinct brown, with a nice looking body and more carbonation than you might expect. Notes of fig and caramel in the nose, but there’s an insistent metallic flavor that gets in the way of enjoyment. Slightly thin, lacking much in the way of personality.
3.3pour is a hazy amber with a good size beige head, nice lacing.
smell is of caramel, fruit.
taste is of dark fruit, caramel, malt, syrup texture.
a pretty good belgian.
