3.3 pours a cloudy dark brown with a large light beige head, and great lacing. smell is of rye, some sweetness, a little wild yeast comes through, and musty. taste is smooth, malt, yeast, citrus, hops, and a touch of caramel, ends a little dry.
3.0 ruddy brown pour, berry aroma, acidic cherry malty flavor harsh medium acidity
3.0 750 ml bottle corked and caged poured a clody amberish red color, aromas of light coconut, light tart fruuit, some caramel and pine. Flavors are the same, light cherry added in the flavor, interesting beer, lots going on here.
3.1 Cloudy reddish amber with a thin off white head. The nose, the palate, everything is American oak. Even the texture is woody. Some malty flavor pokes through, but this needs more time.
2.6 Tap @ Taphouse Grill, Seattle. Clear deep red with a creamy dense white head. Aroma is almost all sweet caramel with just a hint of citrus. Flavor again is dominated by caramel malt, low hop bitterness and no sourness at all. Medium to full body and lots of residual sugar. WTF, Imperial Flanders Red, more like sweet caramel sugar bomb, me no like. There is no way they intended to make this mess.
3.5 Bottle at WWBA ’12 Brooklyn. Rich bourbon and coconut in the nose. Prickly mouthfeel. More hoppy than I expected with sweet coconut and tangy pickle juice.
3.8 Bottle. [thanks after4ever] Pours deep red amber with a big, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is floral, peach, grapefruity, resin, fat caramel and red berries. Light spicy pepper. Medium carbonation, fine dry and creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has good sweet caramel, light biscuity, a hint of milky chocolate and raspberries. Fairly vinious and quite bitter with herbal, piney, citric hops bite. Nice beer.
3.8 Hazed amber orange with chunkies. Aroma of spicy yeast, citrus, dough, fruit. Taste has a nice balance of sweet and light bitterness. Not overly sweet, the alcohol is not overpowering, lightly floral, pretty good stuff.
3.3 750ml bottle. Pours cloudy copper in color with a sudsy off white head that fades to a soapy film. Aroma ha a mix of caramel yeast and dark fruit and some piny hops. Taste is bitter and funky like pine cones and grapefruit peel with some caramel trying to balance it all out, but the alcohol and hops are winning. Palate is medium and a little astringent with a drying finish. This is not bad at all, but I would not buy again!
3.4 750 ml bottle, pours ruddy cider w/ creamy off-white head, aroma is caramelized malt and some resiny hop, caramel sweet with resiny bitterness throughout, stone fruit as well, medium- to full-bodied, finishes pleasantly dry with some boozy warmth and lingering bitterness, pleasant
3.6 In short: A strange hoppy beer with a barnyard character. Far from clean but kind of fun How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed when probably 1 year of age. The look: Cloudy copper body, lots of small particles, large persistent beige head In long: Nose is musky, barnyard, spiciness, pine-tree and dry grass. Intriguing nose I must say. Taste is… ehh… strange. Lots of yeast, barnyard, a bit of caramel, a bit of oak, stale water, notes of vanilla, lemony acidity and a ton of coniferous hops. Assertive bitterness. Overall sensation of drinking something dirty/soiled. Big fluffy full body. I’m not sure why the ratings are so low on this beer. I expected a total train wreck because an American Strong Ale with an average of 3.35 usually indicates a train wreck. Granted the beer is a bit strange (a bit of a mess actually) but it was a fun messy beer and I didn’t a problem drinking a full 750ml of this. Anybody looking for a hoppy beer off the beaten path should give Monstre Rouge a try. Much better than what the shitty ratings suggest, and don’t tell me that I’m crazy and I’m not making any sense otherwise I will wear new color of socks until you have no choice but to agree with me.
3.6 Pours a dark amber-green with a thin off-white head. Aroma is vanilla, booze, dark fruit. Tate is slightly sour, fruity, vanilla and booze. Lightly carbonated. Nice.
3.5 750 ml. Hazy deep amber body. Frothy off-white head, slowly diminishing. Sweet aroma of raisin, cherry, caramel, alcohol with a backdrop of wood, brett and mustiness. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Dark fruit in the taste is overrun with bitterness and some medicinal notes and hot alcohol in the finish. Wood and peat notes with some grapefruit hoppiness in the background. This beer grew on me the more I drank it.
3.1 Name: Monster rouge Brewery: Terrapin Beer Company Date: July 02, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting Appearance: muddy burnt orange, fine beige head, drippy lace Aroma: sweet malt aroma, touch of funkness, fruity tartness Flavor: sweet malt flavor, fruity sweetness, just a hint of funk or tartness Overall: needs time Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 12/20 Rating: 3.1/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: ** /4
2.9 Bottle. Had this one in the cellar for quite a while and finally had the chance to open it up. Poured into a NB tulip glass a slightly hazed dark copper color with a light tan head. The aroma is malty with orange, slight booze note as well. Medium mouthfeel. Sweet start with a building level of citrus rind note. This is like a hoppy red with too much bitterness in the end. Laces nicely. Not a big fan of this one.
3.3 bottle 7/3/11. hazy cherry brownish red with a small raw almond tinted head. cherries are in the aroma... but the rest is kinda meh... musty, caramel malt and some spice. the flavor lacks any defining character as well... it’s not bad, just...eh....too much caramel malty sweetness, not sour, a little grassy, a little spice, a little cherry and some tannic-like/cherry skin dryness on the finish. it feels too thick and doesn’t have enough carbonation. i don’t know what to make of it... confusing. 6/4/6/3/14
3.7 Bottle. Pours a murky clouded brown with a tan head. Very interesting aroma with some distinct hoppy rye notes. Flavor is quite nice with a good mix of sour, sweet and bitter. Good kick in the ass for the senses.
3.3 This poured a semi murky red color with a beige head. Aroma was medium musty tart and caramel notes. Flavor was much the same, not much of what I was expecting a very strange and muddled beer.
3.4 Hazy orange-red, beige cover. Aroma is all oak and malt, caramel, toffee. Taste is oak, light tart finish. Odd.
4.1 Aged. Nice ruby/mahogany color. Solid tan head. Some oxidation, but expected. Some sour notes, overly ripe peaches, and strawberries, nice tartness.
3.5 Brown with some slight red tints and a medium sized yellow/white head. Aroma is complex with notes of pineapples, barnyard musk, and oak. Flavor is mostly sweet with a sour and fascinating finish. Raisins, caramel, sour cherries, with a spicy finish. Medium bodied.
3.3 Appearance: deep murky mahogany with some plum designs. Bubbly khaki head, tight and splotchy. Broken patches of lace remains nice and puffy. Nose: rhubarb and hop cones dried together. Overall rather mild; have to hunt for the aromas. Dry forest twigs. Powdered chocolate in the back. Plum and grape esters. Old dry leathery tannins. Opens up a smidge as warms up but not much. Black root and black strap molasses. Palate: burnt roots. Toasty. Lingers with dry European truffles with chocolate powder in the back. Chocolate raisins. Sour? What sour? Nutty prune and plum pits in the middle. Raisin and date bread. Twigs, dirt, and cut fire logs. Black earth. Ashen burnt hops. Slowly grows an intriguing earthy complexity. Final Thoughts: alright but not what I was expecting. Thin, weak, and definitely not anywhere near sour. Rather boring. If it wasn’t going to go sour, it should have focused more on the earthiness.
3.4 Reddish, amber in color, latte colored head. The smell is oak, slight funk, fruits, cherries, pie. The taste is fruits, leaves, oak, and funk.
3.3 Sering: 750 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a deep amber color with a dense light tan head. The nose is mostly pine hops, some malt, and some basement character. The flavor is all American imperial red ale. I get no sour character from this at all. Lots of pine, pine resin, and caramel malt. Pretty heavy body with a good bit of softer carbonation and a long bitter finish. It’s a pretty good strong amber ale, but heavy handed with the hops.
3.5 IPA mixed with a Flanders Red Ale. I don’t typically care much for IPAs, but this was an interesting blend of the two styles. Medium bitterness. Floral aroma with some maltiness and a hint of molasses. I wouldn’t be able to tell this beer has Red Flanders Ale in a blind tasting, but it’s presence does add smoothness and a hint of tartness to what tastes like a fancy IPA. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the $17 per 750ml, but I enjoyed it.
3.2 Bottle thanks to bleeng at August tasting. Pours a cloudy amber with medium off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is floral hop and pine resin. Medium mouthfeel with a bitter hop and grapefruit. A decent American strong ale.
3.0 Bottle shared at the Houston August 2011 tasting. Pours light brown with very little head. Nose is a bit musty with some hoppiness involved. Taste is a bit malty with a sharpness on the end. Some hop profile involved. Not sure what this was meant to be but it’s a bit messy.
3.4 yeast honey and cherry sweet with hop, flower, citrus and pine. deep caramel in the cereal malt backbone.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy aroma. Fruity malty spicy yeasty flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty finish.
3.3 Draft. Pours brownish orange with a beige head. The aroma is sweet and oaky, with some citric hops. The flavor is well balanced, sweet caramel malts, toast, citric and grassy hops, and light oaky woody notes. Not bad.
