Deschutes 20th Anniversary Wit

Deschutes 20th Anniversary Wit

Deschutes Brewery's summer bond Street Series offers yet another refreshing, hot weather quencher to complement Twilight Ale. This unique Belgian-style wheat beer was brewed with zested Curacao orange peel and just enough spices to keep your taste buds guessing. Our brewers tinkered with the recipe for months at the Public House in Bend, Oregon, before perfecting what will arrive on shelves in 22-ounce bottles this June. One prototype of the Wit was sampled at Portland's Spring Beer and Wine Festival in March, where it earned a gold medal.

3.4 pours golden with a light haze and white head. Aroma of some orange peel, light spicy nose with hints of coriander and yeast, a little too thin. Flavor, medium to low carbonation, coriander is upfront with hints of orange peel and some yeasty mouthfeel.
3.5 Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours brackish water with gold hue and white head. The aroma is sweet with sugary malts and then wobbling slowly into wheat with a touch of citrus, spice and yeast. The taste begins grainy with a back drop of coriander spice and a bit of yeastiness. It heads to the finish with the addition of wheat notes mingling with the rest of the flavor profile.
2.5 Blind tasting at Papsø’s Hazy blond color. The aroma is both hoppy and papery. Very simple flavor, dryish, a bit wheaty. Correct bitterness. Nothing special.

3.1 Bottle. Pours a hazy, straw yellow, small white head. A little spice and yeast on the nose, not much else. Flavor is a very subdued collage of coriander, spice, citrus, grass and yeast. Finish is thin, dry and abrupt.
3.1 Bottled. A hazy light golden beer with a lazing white head. The aroma is spicy and hoppy on a lightly malty back ground. The flavor is sweet malty combined with notes of spices and hops. The body is weak.
2.9 #39 - Amerikaner Blind-Smagning 12-Jun-2009 hos Papsoe. Bottle. Clear golden - white head. Grape fruity, wheaty, fruity, orange, spicy, coriander, sulfor, light grassy, citric. Plain.

3.3 From bottle, blind #39. Pours cloudy orange with a small and collapsing white head. Aroma is mild herbal yeasty. Mild citric and light hoppy initial flavoured. Light grassy. Bitter and slight grassy base flavour lasting into the finish. Lasting citrusy flavoured finish.
2.8 Bottle #39 at Papsø’s blindtasting. Cloudy golden coloured with a small white head. Fruity and spicy aroma of tea. Fruity and spicy flavour of tea with notes of hops. Hoppy finish.
3.6 Thanks to fogdog for this bonus beer. It’s one of those I’ve been unintentially saving. Pours a hazy light gold with a small short-lived white head. Aroma of earth, coriander, hay, clove, and just the slightest touch of sulfer. Tastes of earth, hay, grass, a bit of malt, pepper, and restrained spice. It’s there, but gentle. Finishes pretty dry and clean with a linger earth, hay, and grass. Quite light bodied, highish carbonation, and easy going. You know the sort of views you see when driving across Kansas with all the farmland and rolling hills? This tastes how that looks.
2.9 Bottle. Pours hazy light yellow with a small, rocky, white head, somewhat lasting with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (meal, cereal, straw), light hop (grass), heavy yeast (earth) with notes of banana and lemon. Light bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation, and a chalky finish. Short duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.
3.0 Cloudy bright golden color. Aroma is a bit faint, some spice and wheat and yeast. Taste is light with some spice and yeast with some citrus and grainyness.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a clear bubbly gold with a small white head. Aroma of spices, malt, wheat, lemon. Taste is crisp, lots of lemon, wheat, and spices. Lingering crisp spiciness. Great carbonation. Pretty nice.
2.9 Crisp, clean and very light with a large cloudy white head Rounded yeast aromas followed up by citrus as expected. Sweet and crisp. Citrus and banana on the tongue with a sweet pulpiness. Bready cereal flavours stake their claim on the taste buds also. Crisp and smooth with a slight tongue tingle. A good wheat beer. Sweet, crisp and clear. Highly refreshing.
3.6 It was nice of deschutes to offer two new beers for their 20th anniversary this summer. I’ve had the XX so now I’m drinking the wit. I’ll start by saying that while this is not a clear yellow like a pilsner it doesn’t seem nearly as cloudy as what I have encountered with other examples of the style. It smells really yeasty and the flavor is more yeast, hints of spice and pepper and pretty refreshing. Overall, easy to drink but there are better wits. 3.3 (Sample Date: 11/19/2008 Source:Other) 1988 to 2008 20th anniversary wit. Grainy wheat with some spicy yeast character in the aroma. Very grainy flavor with a light fizzy body and mouthfeel. Some spicy yeast flavors.
3.4 Bottle on 11/19/2008. Rather clear, golden body wtih a small off-white head. Sweet clove, vanilla, light saaz aroma. Sweet saaz flavor, light spice, some vanilla and light grain. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.
2.8 A decent witbier, but not up to par with this brewery’s reputation. Aroma was very weak. Lemony with a hint of orange. Pour was a decent light gold with a 1 finger white head. Taste was nice but plain. A hint of citrus with some light sticky malt in the aftertaste. Nice carbonation carries the flavors and brings out a hint of corriander.
3.4 22 oz. bottle courtesy of golubj. Clear, light yellow color. Thin, bubbly white head. Slightly floral aroma with hints of pepper. Grassy flavor with subtle citrus zest. Dry, clean finish. Nice beer.
3.3 Bottled. A decent wit but I imagine this is better when it is fresh. I think I let this sit in my cellar a little too long. It was still good, but I bet it was better a few months ago. All the normal attributes of a good wit but they all seemed a bit muted from sitting.
3.3 Pours my favorite light straw with a hint of orange and a frothy white head. Mellow aroma of lightly oxidized hops (bottle isn’t that old?), lightly sweet wheat, vague banana esters, hint of orange peel and lemon. Pretty simple beer with delicate flavors, I’m not sure why its oxidized so much... but I bet this was pretty awesome fresh. Some sweet candied wheat and some gritty unmalted wheat, love that hint of sourness, orange peel and lemon zest. Long coriander finish. Medium body with smooth glassy but crisp carbonation, slightly gritty. A decent understated wit that I wish was fresh.
3.1 22 oz bottle. Some sweet aromas with some floral notes. Flavors were not as sweet. Citrus and bright fruits but heavy on the wheat twang. Just okay.
2.6 Bottle. Sweet coriander and somewhat chalky aroma. Clear for style, yellow with thin head. Dry and chalky, light coriander and very little citrus. Thin. Boring.
3.0 Clear gold. Very carbonated. Thin head. Nice light pepper aroma. Light pepper flavour builds to long lasting peppery aftertaste. (Soft table pepper) Like a peppery golden ale.
3.4 Bomber. Pours slightly hazy yellow-golden with a small white head. Aroma is sweetish malt, witbier yeast and spices, with quite a bit of coriander. Flavor is similar, with a noticeable bit of orange peel. Not going to win any excitement awards, but it all comes together nicely.
3.2 Draught @ Deschutes Brewery and Public House, Portland, OR. Pours a hazy pale golden color with a small white head. Has a slightly sweet yeasty spicy citrus aroma. Sweetish spivy citrus flavor with some hints of yeast. Has a fruity malty yeasty finish with hints of citrus in the aftertaste.
3.5 Bottle from Holiday Wine. Pours as a clear golden color that is easily visible through and an average amount of sediment that is stuck and thick in place. Aroma has a pleasant serving of coriander as well as orange peel or orange blossom water. The flavor is sort of bland and empty with no highlights other than a presence of wheat, orange peel shavings and dash of coriander.
3.4 Bomber. Very clear yellow pour, small head that faded quickly. The first sip was tart but then became sweeter as I drink. A good amount of Belgian bannana, clove and yeast flavors. A decent beer and easy to drink on this ridiculously hot late October day. (i think it’s 93 here).
