Deschutes / Boulevard Conflux No. 2 - White IPA

Deschutes / Boulevard Conflux No. 2 - White IPA

Isn’t it how it always works? A few brewers sit around tippling and waxing poetic about what-ifs, wild ideas and untapped dreams when one suddenly proclaims "why not?" So the Conflux series was born, bravely leaping corporate and geographic barriers to jointly explore uncharted beeratory. Cheers, fellow explorers, cheers.

Second in a series, this citrusy, smooth white IPA is a fortuitous meeting of Deschutes’ hop skills and Boulevard’s deft wheat touch. What’s 1,800 miles when a great beer is at stake?

3.6 Shared with Travlr. Old? Hazy yellow straw color with lots of head. Nice lacing. Smell is orangey citrus, fresh cut grass, and wheat. Taste is like orange juice, with a bitter finish. Grassy, summery. Doesn’t seem much like an IPA.
4.6 This was a fun one...I know that there is a fair amount of hops and that there was a good amount of citrus to this beer. I paired this beer with a shrimp and crab pizza with cheese that starts with a G and it was amazing. It serves as a great compliment to lighter foods and greens. The hops and the citrus compliment each other well.
3.7 Pours a very very hazy lemon yellow with very frothy white head. Aroma is intense citrus-lemon/grapefruit. Flavor is mostly lemon with nutty bready tones. Body is creamy but with very active carbonation.
3.8 Bottle. Cloudy pale yellow color, massive fluffy white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of citrus > grass > flowers. Taste is bitter lemon and light spice, maybe coriander and white pepper.
4.2 Says best before 1/11 but was still good for me. Good mix of wheat and grapefruit for aroma. Body yellow with white head and some sugar coat lace on glass. Flavor of grapefruit jucie and fro a night shifter hit the spot. Refreshing brew and enjoyable.
3.8 Really nice brew. Sampled in a big bottle in Boulder. Pours deep orange with a thin head on it. Decent carbonation but comes out really nice and clear. Quality quality malts.
2.9 (#46) 22oz bottle poured into tulip glass. Appearance: Golden yellow with a slight haze, white foam head. Aroma: Lemon, banana, orange, coriander, grass, pepper, spicy. Taste: Sweet citrus that transforms to dry hops. Honey, cereal, pepper, clove, and grapefruit. Palate: Med. bodied. Smooth and sweet at first but gets rather bitter on finish and aftertaste. Overall: It’s alright, a little too far on the bitter scale for my taste though. I previously tried this on draft last summer and I remember the taste being more enjoyable for me. Interesting to see what No. 3 will be.
3.7 Sample at Eurostash III tasting on 01/12/2012: The beer is a hazy golden color with a medium rocky white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of lemons, yeast and mild hops. Medium body with flavors of Belgian yeast, citrus, wheat and hops. The finish is earthy hops and yeast with a lingering sweetness. Above average overall.
3.7 Bottle shared by a friend. Hazy yellow pour with a thick white head. Aroma of coriander, citrus and sweet malt. Coriander and lemon zest flavor with maltiness before a grassy hop finish.
3.7 Pours orange with a white head. Strong aroma of citrus hops, pepper. Nice flavor - very citrus, wheat. Well done beer.
3.9 Tried side by side with Boulevard’s version. This one has more of a head and lacing (the other has none) and is just slightly less deep yellow. Good carbonation. Preserved lemon nose plus floral hops...good but not as powerful as I’d like. Honey and citrus with solid hop backbone. Hop bitterness and sweet malts play perfectly on the finish. Really interesting. Love the hops with the white beer core.
3.7 Bottle pours hazy yellow with white head. Aroma is lemony and hoppy. The taste is similar with a smooth Belgian wit taste that is right on. The hops are a little mellowed but good and hay like. Overall a good brew.
2.3 Bomber. Aroma is of cascade hops and orange peel. Color is hazy straw with a nice white cap and plenty of floaties.Taste is of coriander and orange peel and finishes with a strong grapefruit/lemony dry bitterness. Not digging the combination of the hops with the belgian wit style. I’m a little disappointed with the offering from Deshchutes.
4.3 Delicious. Seriously one of the best beers i’ve ever had. It’s a Great Wit Beer flavor with orange, citrus and clove with notes of ginger, melon, yeast and pepper. There is however an additional layer of flavor, there are some hops up this beer.
3.3 Bomber. The body is a mostly clear, very lightly hazy straw-gold color, strewn with a scant few streams of effervescing micro-bubbles. Initially thick and fluffy, the snow white head settles fairly quickly to a dense gathering of frothy bubbles with a thin, smooth center film. Tall, pronounced splotches of hard lace cling mightily to the glass. The nose is full-on imperial witbier meets blonde IPA (i.e. sans crystal malt). I get a fresh malt base of creamed wheat, oats, and a dash of sourdough French bread. There’s a hint of egginess that one would typically find in a Berliner Weiss, suggesting that perhaps a bit of lactic acidity has crept in somehow. Hops are floral and perfumy up front, touching on grapefruit blossoms and then transitioning towards sharper white grapefruit pith and a dash of pine. The grapefruit adds a really nice, dry, peppery character that goes nicely with the wheat base and the subdued coriander. The flavor largely mirrors the nose. Pithy grapefruit works with oily lemon rind and coriander to provide ample bitterness and spice over a creamy, wheaty, cereal malt base. Unfortunately, the lemon proves to be overly astringent, drying things out excessively for this style and bringing some medicinal alcohol to the forefront. The palate shows some of those same ill effects, coming across just a bit overly astringent, pithy, and bitter on the finish. The body is substantive, but perhaps a bit overly carbonated and just kind of weird. Eh...cool experiment...but I’ll call this one a miss for the most part.
3.6 The other half of the collaboration tasted laterally. This was closer to the style, with a pronounced dryness. Significant coriander, white pepper. More perceived bitterness, with a mild hop aroma. Likely better consumed with food, I thought the drinkability was fine but limited. Slightly hazy whitish coloured body. Thanks again, Tom.
4.8 Wow, a super spicy almost Belgian-wit like aroma. This is very smooth, a nice spice and really good. This beer could sneak up on you. Really nice. On tap at Big Dog’s
3.8 22 ounce bottle pour. Light yellow color with a nice white head. Citrus and light fruit taste. Fresh, crisp refreshing. Light hops for an ipa. White ipa is a great way to explain this one.
3.8 Bottle: Pale yellow haze with a modest creamy white head. Aroma indicates dry florals merged with wet citrus fruitiness. Inviting. Sweet citrus fruit and plenty of bitters in the taste. Some hints of tropical fruit. Sort of a lingering, dry, spicey trailer. Different is good!
4.0 Bomber. Cloudy yellow pour with lots of sediment, a short white head and moderate lace. Citrus hops and lemon in the nose, along with some yeast. Medium body and moderate, fine carbonation. Toast, lemon, resinous hops, farmhouse funk, yeast, pepper, and caramel. Medium, funky and hoppy finish. A top Belgian IPA.
3.5 Hazy gold. Citrusy and yeasty. It tastes a lot like a Belgian IPA. Bitter, but certainly not what you’d expect from a Deschutes IPA, its much more like a wit.
3.7 Clear golden color with frothy rocky lasting white foam. Lots to smell here; sage, ganja bud, pine sap, tart wheat, earthy hop, coriander, etc. Medium bodied with average co2. Orange, coriander, wit brew spice flavors with earhty citrus hoppage, mildly tart pale wheat--very nice
3.7 22 oz bottle. Pours a clear light golden color. Aroma of coriander, lemon, nutmeg, orange, pepper, cinnamon. Flavor is citrus lemon/orange, coriander, pepper, pine. A nice beer.
3.5 Bomber. Pours a hazy yellow with a thin white head. Aroma of grapefruit and spice. Flavor is weird, not that I don’t enjoy it, but the aggressive citrus seems like almost pure lemon candy and some herbal hops.
3.5 Pours a very light clear golden color with a stark white head. Bubbles rise slowly from the bottom of the glass. Aroma of citrus fruit and light honey. The flavor is hops, citrus and honey, just like the aroma. Very clean in the mouth and easy to drink. Not an overpoweringly strong beer, but very tasty. At 7.3% ABV and with such a light, crisp taste it almost seems as though a bit of the alcohol makes it through to the flavor of the beer. Definitely an interesting and well rounded beer.
4.0 Pale gold in color. Aroma of rosewater and other floral scents. Bitter, but light, and very refreshing. Clearly the hops were the star here, but there was a clear hint of wheat somewhere in the background. Perfect level of smoothness while managing to stay light on the tongue.
4.0 Bottle thanks to funkybrewster. This is delicious! I love the delicateness wheat brings to any beer! Aroma of ginger, lemon, orange, hint of alcohol, super refreshing! Flavor follows, bitterness with the weird ginger flavor is just a hint medicinal, but really just super enjoyable! Belgian wit yeast? The body is fantastic, drinks just like a Belgian-wit, soft sizzling carbonation, so delicate!
3.8 A gold cloud, winking lemon whisk. Goes well with Tom Petty and country porch sitting.
3.9 Bomber. Pours a nice hazy light orange yellow with a small white froth. Aroma is very nicely tropical and citric fruit, a soft wheat note, nice and spicy pepper, lemon zest, very floral. Flavor starts sweet and citric, picking up a wheat and spicy character, some ginger and lemon, very fresh, lightly bitter finish with a lingering wheat and lemon rind note. Medium body and a soft carbonation. Very tasty
3.2 On tap at Monks in Sioux Falls. Pours a golden orange with frothy two finger head. Nose is some spices and pepper with a bit of hops in there and belgian yeast. Taste is more pepper and saison like taste with some bready malt and only a tiny amount of hops really present. Overall, I’m not a Belgian IPA fan and this is really what this one seemed like. The taste was more pronounced and assertive than the Boulevard version which wasn’t my thing.
