Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA

Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA

Brewed with wheat and pilsner malt; this IPA displays beautiful citrus aromas from Cascade and Citra hops that meld with the esters of Belgian yeast. Think thirst quenching hopped-up wit beer with enough IBUs to warrant the IPA name.

3.6 A bit wheaty for my taste, but this is very sessionable and refreshing. Medium-bodied, with lots of yeast up front of the light citrus fruit, finishing with moderate hop bite.
3.8 A wheaty, citrus, hoppy crisp and refreshing aroma and taste. Hoppy but pretty balanced.
3.3 Poured from the bottle into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a very cloudy lemon-straw color with a large, foamy white head with good retention, lacing, and cling. Its aroma featured a blend of citrus, wheat, lemon, and straw notes, along with a yeast presence. The taste was mostly bitter with strong citrus and lemon flavors, along with a bit of grain, and a modest sour yeast effect. It was fairly lively and thinner in the mouth, with a dry body and good carbonation.
2.8 Cloudy hopfenweiss style beer. Aroma of lemon. Tastes of cloves and citrus with hoppy aftertaste but not overly bitter.
3.4 Shared 12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy light gold color with a white head. Aroma is wheat, lemon, and citrus. Taste is wheat, lemon, honey, light yeast and spice. Has a very mild tanginess. Refreshing.
3.5 Aroma: very nice balance of citrus and hops; Appearance: light straw with white head that hangs around; some lacing; Taste: well layered with pleasant bitterness balanced with citrus notes; refreshing; Palate: medium body with long, lightly bitter finish; Overall: drinking a bottle past its best by date, so definitely interested in trying a fresher bottle. Better than expected.
3.0 @ Deschutes 16-3-10: En mild ipa med tydliga vetetoner. Verken mer eller mindre.
4.0 A 12 fl oz bottle with a best by date of 13th May 2016 and poured into a Duvel tulip glass. It poured a cloudy pale golden colour with a one finger white head that dissipated quickly but leaves some nice lacing. Aromas were strong banana and bubblegum sweetness followed closely by some citrus and coriander. Taste was much like the aroma with strong banana, honey and bubblegum sweetness followed by some citrus orange and coriander and finishes with a light but lingering lemon zest bitterness. Medium bodied with mid to high carbonation. Overall, a good mix of Witbier and IPA. This was extremely drinkable and refreshing. I could definitely see myself drinking this quite a lot during hot summers.
3.4 Bottle@Rembrandt Hotel, Bangkok. Huey pale golden beer with a good white head. The aroma is dry with plenty of bitterness and some yeastiness. The flavour is dry with yeast and some bitter fruitiness. Overall a nice White IPA, a mixture between a wheat beer and an IPA I presume.
3.1 Like the label art, not so much the actual beer inside the bottle. It may be I just don’t like this variety: adding Belgian yeast to anything just messes up the composition. It is okay, just that. Multi 12oz bottles
3.5 Has a giant solid head and foggy yellow body without carbonation. Aroma is soft floral detergent smells but no discernable hops. Flavours are flours, sweet wheat, and fruit hints. Sugary with a good mouthfeel. It’s quite nice and reminds me of some Cantillon editions.
3.8 a wonder citrus aroma and taste. Sweet with a bit of a hoppy kick. This Would par with many foods but especially with sea food. The wheat and malt taste are really wonderful. Great brew
4.1 1-2 finger head out of a 12oz. bottle. Hazy pale yellow/gold color. Head fades, but nice lacing and occasional larger bubbles continue. Very floral scent. Hops are very evident. Smells of pine, grass, spices, citrus, and earthy. Slight malt, like a Saison. Strong burst of bitterness and coriander at first, then a strong combination of hop and citrus flavors push through. It gets slightly sweet for a bit, but then it seems to move towards a bitter/sour acidic tang. The beer dries out and upon trailing out, the citrusy hop flavors come back. Belgian yeast flavors are very strong throughout. Biscuity and bready. Surprisingly medium mouthfeel. I assumed it would be on the lighter side by color and style but feels fuller in the mouth. Really good. Fuller flavor than expected. Belgian yeast, citrus, and spices very apparent.
2.9 Looks like a wheat beer. Pale straw colour and cloudy. Bit watery tasting. Not much of a typical IPA taste, but not awful. (K)
3.5 From a bottle. Pretty much what it says on the bottle, a witbier with a big hop punch, loved it.
3.4 Rating from old records. I'm not always a fan of wheat beers, but there are enough hops and fruity esters in this to make this interesting.
3.7 Pours a hazy straw color with white head. A lot less sweet, but kinda feels like you’re drinking a fruity soda.
3.2 Bottle. Orange, lemon, biscuit malt, and grapefruit peel aroma. Hazy golden yellow with small head. Sweet orange/lime, wheat malt, and grapefruit peel flavor. Okay body.
3.3 Pale yellow colour, whtie head. Hoppy aroma, malts, citrus. Wheat flavour, light sour, banana, citrus. Finish citrus, cloves and hops. (from draught @ GBBF ’14, London)
3.2 Bottle. Golden fuzzy color. Aroma of mildly sour wheat and citrus. Taste of sour grain, citrus and coriander. Not bad, but a bit simple.
3.5 Bottle: Cloudy, bright yellow, with a small, quick, white head. Grapefruit, yeasty scent. Taste is nicely tart....grapefruit, lemon, Belgian yeast.....very citrusy.... even has a touch of Pils-like flavour at the finish..... Pretty refreshing.
3.7 12oz Flasche. Hellgelb trübe Farbe, schöner Schaum. Das Bier riecht nach Hopfen, Zitrone und Hefe. Antrunk hefig dann Kräuter und angenehm bitter.
2.3 Sample from bottle at promotional display. Pours a pale cloudy straw yellow. Not much of an aroma. Taste is mostly citrus rind and coriander. Similar to Blue Moon. This isn’t really my style of wheat beer. I prefer the German Hefeweizen style over the Belgian Witbier. Probably due to the difference in the spices. To me this is just blah. Not crisp and refreshing. Overall its a no for me.
3.9 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 12/1/2015. Pours hazy bright golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, pear, apple, coriander, pepper, clove, light banana, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, citrus hops, and pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, pear, apple, coriander, pepper, clove, light banana, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal bitterness/yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, coriander, pepper, clove, light banana, wheat, cracker, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, citrus hops, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice White IPA style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, spices, citrus hops, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

3.0 Bottle 35,5cl / Botella 35,5cl. @ R & J Liquors, Granby, CO, USA A: Hazy golden / Dorado turbio. T/S: Malt, yeast, citrusy / Malta, levadura, citrico.
3.6 Bright yellow, hazy color with white head. Very intense aroma of coriander and some belgian yeast. Taste is not as intense. Starts like a typical belgian ale, gets into witbier territory in the middle and finishes quite bitter. The coriander is also lingering in the aftertaste. A nice beer overall but it’s kind of missing the IPA part. It has a bitter finish but I would have liked a more hoppy aroma and taste too.
3.2 Bottle. Aroma is big honey and cereal grain with some bubblegum, banana, peaches, and light flowers. Tastes moderately sweet with very little bitterness. Big Belgian yeast flavor with honey and peaches. Mouthfeel is a little syrupy. Decent.
2.5 Bottle. Light golden, hazy, small to average and fully diminishing head. Moderate, malty - wheaty and sweetish aroma, some caramel, light floral fruitiness and citrus hoppyness, light yeast. Body is medium, malty - some wheat and sweetish flavor, some caramel, light floral fruitiness and light citrus hoppyness. Finish is average, malty - some wheat and lightly sweetish - sweetish, some caramel and light fruitiness, light metal with light citrus/herbal hoppyness. Caramel sweetish "IPA” with wheat - really could use more bitterness. Not so enjoyable.
