Deschutes Hop Henge IPA

Deschutes Hop Henge IPA

Who knows what inspired the ancients to build Stonehenge--or what inspired us to build Hop Henge in its likeness. But build it we did, out of wrapped bales of whole-flower hops out on the brewery lawn. Like the rest of the Bond Street Series, Hop Henge highlights the creativity and curiousity of our brewers. Bolder than its English ancestors, with huge hops and a bitter finish, this IPA is no wallflower.

NOTE: This is the original version. In 2007 it was bumped up to an IIPA. See that entry here.

3.8 Bright nose. citrus flavors with mild hop finish. Extremely well balanced ipa. Atl done
3.9 Draft. About as aromatically wonderful as it can be, with big notes of peach and some caramel malts that keep the aroma from being too high-register. Dense, dense lace. Wow-level. Flavors follow the nose with a big burst of peach, then maybe something meatier to balance it out -- a malt profile I couldn?t quite identify -- and then a very fast, bitter finish that goes dry quickly. Really wonderful.
4.0 2/22/15 from bomber dated 4/08/15. . Cloudy with one finger head. Excellent aroma. Pretty well balanced. Reminds me of Pliny the Elder but slightly maltier.
3.7 Murky gold, with a fluffy white head. Aroma is lost to my stuffed sinuses. Taste is pineapple/tropical fruit and citrus hops, with a great balanced sweetness. That combines to make this seem "juicy", which I love. Well carbonated, but not in a bubbles popping-off-in-your-mouth way, but in a "fluffy" kind of way (it’s all I can think of right now). Seems to lean more toward a DIPA than a regular IPA. Very, very good, and really easy to drink.
3.7 9.5% and it smells like it. Orange marmalade nose, candied orange, mint. Delicately balanced, big and smooth. No alcohol taste that you get from the nose. Melon and tropical fruits. Man this is good!
3.8 (I remember this being closer to 8% but lower than the next version). Anyway...not a standout for a double IPa THOUGH STILL quite nice. huge body and great mouthfeel, hop aroma and flavor popping juuuust a little less. 2018 - I was excited to see this occasionally 4+ beer in 6-packs, but came away underwhelmed. 3.6-7 for this years.

3.6 Another winner from Deschutes. 2014 experimental addition. Pours cloudy pale amber. Smaller head and less lacing. Smells of sweet malts, mango and cypress. Taste is malt forward with a pine middle and ending with floral hop bitterness. Nice balance and a hop head fan favorite
3.0 At the Big Texas Beer Fest on 4/5/2014. Draft pours neon orange with almost no head that goes away. Aroma is earthy hops. Taste is bitter earthy with some light floral notes. Cardboard sweet malt. It is a little bitter for me.
3.8 Pours with fine bubbles with a thick white head. Immediate mild pine hop taste. With a mild lingering flavor that continues when you inhale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.8 Fresh bottle. Pours orange/gold with white head. Aroma is citrus, floral, pine, grass. Taste is a combination of all of those. The malt doesn’t make much of an impression here. Not the caramel/toffee tones I get with some DIPAs. Still, quite refreshing. Clear and crisp flavors. I want more.
3.3 Thin pale color with virtually no head on tap. Typical flavor for the style with a slight alcohol burn. Nice beer, but nothing extraordinary for the style.
3.2 Pours a light gold with a thin lasting head. Aroma and taste are straight forward for the style.
3.4 On tap at Red’s. I had high hopes for it, but it’s pretty standard fare. Pours amber, thin white head. Malty backbone, lots of citrus hop. Straightforward IPA.
4.1 Well done Indian Pale Ale. Would live to know the "experimental" hops. Crisp with noticeable pine and lemon.
3.8 Slightly pink amber, off white head, fading some. Aromas of spruce, lychee, lemon. Flavors of spruce, lemon, grapefruit, rosemary. Palate is crisp, carbonation fine bubbles, very nice. Bitter finish.
4.0 Round from PreFunk. Almost perfect IPA. Beautiful fluffy head, meloow piney/citrusy nose, and some puckering tartness, with plenty lingering aftertaste. Truly wonderful.
4.0 Pours a golden with a slight red/orange tinge and healthy white head. Aroma of citrus. Taste is slightly oily, thick mouthfeel.....bready maltiness, citrus and pine notes with mild bitter finish. A well done American IPA, nothing way over the top.
3.4 Citrus and pine nose. Taste follows suit with some sweetness. Long smooth bitter finish. Good
4.0 This beer’s appearance is a slightly hazy golden orange color with a small white head, and the aroma smells like citrus hops and grapefruit. The taste is quite bitter and mildly sweet, which makes for a really pleasant balance, and the palate combines a medium body, soft carbonation, bitter finish, and a sticky texture.
4.5 22 oz bottle: pours bright orange with a light head and good lacing. Aroma is intense fruit with mango, pineapple and tangerine. Sweet with good bitter balance. Complex flavors of citrus, good malt balance, smooth. Hard to believe this is a 10 percent brew.
3.7 Really strong and flavorful ipa. Has a very fruity and bitter taste. Comes in a nice bomber bottle and has a strong aftertaste. Very good
3.8 Deep gold, clear, off-white head. Aroma: piney-resiny hops, slight caramel note. Flavor: big malt backbone of grainy, toasty and caramel notes supports the hefty resiny-pine hop character.
4.8 10.4% IBV and a perfect experiment IPA? Sign me up. I'll be there. A great limited release I would recommend to any person interested in beer or not. So impressed by this brew. I'm going to try more of this brewery simply because this was great. I bought 6 bottles in 48 hours. Go get it now. Hello spring perfection. I will order a case to gift my new roommate to christen our new house. It's that good. - pixels sent via Beer Buddy on iPhone
4.1 Tropical fruit, berry, sweet malty aroma. Strong hoppy flavor: Tropical, tangerine, nectarine, floral, a little herbal. Fruity candy aftertaste. Light caramel malt flavor. Could be a little drier... but really nice flavor. Not super heavy; but enough to keep the hoppy goodness on the tongue for a while. Can’t taste any of the 10+ percent ABV. ("Best by": 5/31/13)
3.8 Pours light amber with white head out if bottle. Very hoppy smell and taste with a smooth finish. Great beer for the hop heads!
4.0 Interesting, tasty brew. Served at a good temperature with a nice, off-white, foamy head and some lace. Color is a clear honey amber. Aroma is a fecund malt hop leafy musty, Flavor’s like nose with a bit of sweet tucked in and has a 50/50 pine to grapefruit dominance along with a nice carbonic tang. Body and carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor, long, and relatively drinkable.
3.8 Bottle: pours cloudy caramel brown with off white frothy head. Nose is extremely fruity. Apricot, grapefruit hop bitterness with lots of resinous notes. Great beer
4.3 I really loved this one. It was high alcohol but not super noticeable to me. On the hoppy bitter side but I like bitter beers. Def noticed a orange in it. One of my new favorites.
3.9 Appearance of beer on tap is very flat. Overall, a very bitty/hoppy beer. Not sure there’s anything in here that makes it unique to others I have tried, but the high alcohol content is not noticeable.
