Deschutes Hop Trip

Deschutes Hop Trip

Part of the Bond Street Series. This Fresh Hop Pale Ale is all about celebrating the hop harvest in the fall. Fresh picked hops have to be added to the brew immediately and in abundance. Roughly 270 pounds of Crystal hops from Doug Weathers’ farm outside Salem, Oregon will be added to the 50 barrel batch in addition to some dry kilned whole flower hops. That adds up to approximately 5.5 pounds of hops per barrel brewed.

3.7 Strong pine hop aroma with caramel in the background. Very nice and simple, and refreshing. Good.
3.9 Bottle into IPA glass. Pours a clearish copper colour with off white head. Aroma is orange and stone fruits. Taste is orange with a little toastiness.
3.8 Pours copper orange with a one finger white head with good lacing. Aroma is of fresh citrus, pine, fresh cut grass, herbal hops, bready malts, toasted malts, and some light caramel sweet malts. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, semi bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, well balanced APA with some nice fresh hop notes.
3.4 Love the aroma but the hop dominant flavor isn’t really for me. It’s dry but actually relatively smooth. Decent west coast hop & a must try for hop heads.
2.6 fresh Bottle from Bill, pours a clear amber brown with medium white head. Notes are nothing but malt, wheat bread, toast, spice and caramel malt. This thing is an ESB right? I know there is hops in it cause its pretty bitter but I can only taste staleness and malt. Awful
3.5 Aroma - caramel malt with a slightly pined hop. Appearance - the body is mahogany, and full of particulates. The head is white and around 1". The head settles into a thin layer of foam. There is a fair lacing. Taste - is rich in caramel malt, the hops are slightly pined and somewhat floral. Palate - medium body, texture is slightly oiled, carbonation is average, the finish is pleasantly bittered and of medium length.
3.5 Brown-orange, clear, minimal white head. Honey, orange citrus. Quite sweet, resinous bitterness sneaks up a bit getting stronger through the finish. Long finish, somewhat oily, medium body. Not too much carbonation. Pretty good.
3.5 Above average, but feel like it needs a little aging to round out the corners. If you like the freshest of the fresh, you can’t go wrong.
4.5 Had on tap at brew pub in Bend. Not super clear, reddish orange. Some aftertaste, but takes a while & it’s not strong/biting.
2.9 Tap at Sidedoor. Classic US IPA aroma. Creamy, thin off-white head on top of an amber-tan body. A touch soapy, earthy. The English yeast and caramel tastes are quite antiquated, has that boring sub par brewpub feel. Definitely bland for a fresh hop beer. Rather unimpressive.
3.9 Light copper color with small white head. Not too strong of an aroma. Lots of hops but well balanced.
3.3 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange-bronze color with lots of tiny floaters and a large creamy-soapy orange-white head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was faint but had a bitter piney note. The flavor was sweet and malty with notes of caramel, sugar, pine and grapefruit. Medium length finish. Moderately full bodied. Pleasant.
3.6 Tasted from bottle. Aroma is floral with some sweetness. Taste is moderately bitter with floral and herbal flavors. Some caramel notes. Well done pale ale.
3.7 Amber color with nice head on tap at sharp edge in crafton. Plenty of hops for a pale ale,
3.4 A dark, almost ruby golden color with half finger off white head. Smells of fresh cut grass, honey biscuit, tea. Taste is light on the grassy hops, small bit of sweetness, ends with a light cracker taste and small amount of bitter.
3.5 Poured from 12oz bottle, pours an unclear amber orange with an egg shelled colored head, aroma has some citrus and light hops on the nose and the flavor has a little bit of sweetness on the front end with a slight hop finish, not all that bad.
3.6 Bottle from Ales & Lagers in KL at home in HK. Clear iron-amber pour. Minimal white head with some dotting. Aroma is pine resin and floral hops - not too strong but enticing. Taste is relatively light, and quite malty for a hop-driven APA. Background of crisp slightly floral bitter hops, with a good bite on the finish. Nice but wouldn't get again I don't think.
3.6 Bought by Matt back from Malaysia. Amber-brown cloudy pour. White sudsy head with huge bubbles. Smells of crystalline malt, floral dusty hop. Slightly sweet and slightly dusty. Taste is moderately bitter, resin, faint pepper, lightly sweet malty finish. Body is medium, quite slick, smooth, long, moderate bitterness, lemony finish. Plenty of malt and decent amount of hop for a pale ale.
3.1 On tap. Pours dark orange with hints of brown, almost no head. Typical American pale ale in the SN style but with less vibrancy. Not bad--and I recall the bottle version being better--but I can easily think of 10 beers from Deschutes that I prefer to this.
3.4 over rated pale ale in my mind. way too malty and not enough hopps in this one. very bitter finish. pours copper with a thin tan head.
3.9 Cloudy appearance. Thick, frothy head. Good lacing. Very sweet hoppy aroma. Citrusy. Orange. It smells of fresh hops. Citrusy hoppy finish. Sticky mouthfeel. Salty. Almost dry tasting. Soft carbonation. Not a bad beer just do not see as a beer i would purchase very often.
3.3 12oz bottle. bB date of 12/27/15. Appearance: Clear amber deep Amber with a touch of orange, medium khaki foam head. Aroma: Faint grassy citrus. Hop aroma is minimal, obviously not at optimal freshness. Taste: Light caramel with strong toasted malt notes. Moderately strong bitterness that tends to have more tropical fruit notes than other fresh hop beers that are especially resinous and grassy. Overall hop flavor is more subdued than others. Mouthfeel: Medium body with some creaminess and light to moderate carbonation. Finish: Lingering resin and grass, with a touch of toasted malt. Overall: This was on the low end of fresh/wet hopped ales I’ve had, but likely because it wasn’t at optimal freshness. Aroma was minimal, and hop flavor was lacking and dull. Not impressed but will give a fresher example a shot next year.
3.6 Bottle shared with the regular crew...i liked it...plenty of hops....love everything deschuttes..always great balance from these guys.
3.5 Enjoyed at Naja’s place in redondo beach, LA. A well balanced beer; a great one to start off with. Deepish red pour. Great flavourful hoppyness and a solid caramel malt backbone. Nice bittersweet finish
3.6 bottle. Golden with one finger head. Medium body with plenty of hoppy goodness. Citrus and pine are well balanced. Moderate bitterness.
4.1 Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a huge billowy head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave tons of foamy lace clinging on the sides of the glass. Smell – The beer has a big nose of a citrus hop smell mixed with some nice smells of sweeter citrus of tangerine and a decent showing of a tropical fruit smell of papaya and pineapple. Along with these aromas comes some light grassy smells and a little bit of a grassy smell. Taste – The taste begins as the nose would have predicted, with a nice showing of a citrus grapefruit hop. Along with this flavor, is some lighter sweet tastes of a tangerine and tropical nature. The sweeter fruit tastes grow slightly stronger to the middle of the taste only to fade again later at the end, creating a slightly more crisp flavor profile. With some other hop flavors of a grassy and earthy flavor coming toward the middle and the end of the taste, and with the drying out of the taste throughout, one is left with a nicely hopped and moderately crisp and enjoyable hop blended flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the average side with a carbonation level that is rather average as well. For the mix of citrus hop and slightly thinner body at the end of the taste, the mouthfeel is rather nice, as it upholds all the nice flavors of the brew all while keeping the beer crisp and refreshing. Overall – This was a very enjoyable brew overall. Crisp and hop flavorful with a nice clean and enjoyable flavor profile. Another nice one in the Bond Street Series by Deschutes.
3.5 12oz bottle from Andersons in Dublin: clear amber pour with frothy white head. aroma of bready, caramel, grapefruit. tastes are floral, grassy, spice, citrusy, caramel, light tropical. thin palate.
3.4 12oz bottle from Bottles & Cans. 12/26/15 "best by" date. Coppery orange pour with almost no head leaving a few spots of lace. Aroma has pine, spices, some citrus and other fruits plus some caramel. Taste is of sweet fruits, caramel, pine, some simple sugar and chewy resin. Medium bodied. Finishes quite sweetly. To the honor of the cascade hop, but also with too much residual sweetness so it gets cloying. 13.2
3.6 Pours a nice Amber head which dissipates quickly. Definitely hoppy. Finishes with a bit of bitter. If you like hoppy bears this will get your palate excited
3.7 Sampled from a bottle, this ale had a medium red-burnt orange pour and gave a nice lasting, cover of faint off-white bubbles, the bubbles receded to a thin layer and ring, it left nice lacing on the glass, the nose had toasted malt, toast and faint melanoidins, some caramel, citrus, spice and herb hops, a little orange fruit, malt and bread sweetness, the flavors were toasted malt, a little caramel and light melanoidins with citrus, spice and herb-foral hops, some grapefruit, and a light malt sweetness, the finish had a gentle light to almost medium hop bitterness that lingered and left the palate somewhat dry with a little malt flavor trailing, this drink was creamy with a light mouth feel, and there was soft to average carbonation, a nice pale ale, it was hoppy all the way through, I enjoyed the toasted malt with the touch of munich malt, hops were citrus and spice with some herb-floral notes, a very good drink, I would recommend trying.
