Deschutes Jubel 2010

Deschutes Jubel 2010

This ‘Super Jubel’ was discovered by accident two decades ago when a clumsy burglar didn’t realize the weight of his stolen keg of Jubelale. He dropped it outside to freeze in the season’s sub-zero temperatures – only to be discovered the next morning by Gary Fish, Deschutes Brewery owner. More than half the liquid in the keg had frozen and the remaining beer was a very cold, highly concentrated ‘Jubelale on steroids.’ It was so good that the brewers set about recreating it, coming up with an annual ‘Super Jubel’ that is aged in oak barrels. A limited amount has been available on tap every year, 2010 will be only the second time that the brewery has bottled up this brew for sale. The first time it was available by bottle was a special millennium edition in 2000.

3.9 [Tap] Snifter at a Deschutes tap event. Tasting notes from 2012. Nearly black pour. Low carbonation and very little head. Dark fruits, fig, fruitcake and alcohol in the nose. Flavor notes include molasses, dark fruits, almond, pine sap, brown sugar and raisins. Nice balance and coating mouthfeel. Sweet finish allows more alcohol to be featured. Good stuff.
4.2 Bottle @tasting. Pours black with a shade of purple about it. Sherry and cherry on the nose. One hell of a nose at that. Toffee , plums and dates also some vanilla, a very complex taste palate, wonderful.
4.0 Bottle at Craig’s. Clear dark brown pour, thin tan head. Plum, raisin, sherry aromas, light spice background. Taste adds some chocolate to the mix. Very nice.
4.1 Slightly cloudy and light brown. Ringed off white head. Lovely rich, redcurrant and light steely but bright maltiness. Backlit booze. Oily, light nutmeg and easy spice. Rich and tense sweetness. Lovely light cinnamon and a firm finish. Bottle, Beers of Europe, Sinner Series Tasting
4.1 Bottle, big thanks to Paul. Looks very nice, dark reddish brown with off white head. Nice aroma, tootsie roll, brownie, dried fruits. Taste of sherry fruits, prunes, chocolate and toffee. Full bodied and sweet. Tasty

4.2 Pours light brown. Notes of toffee, cereal. Tastes were heavy sweet and light bitterness.
3.8 A dark brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet vinous malt with treacle, scotch character, grassy hops, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity vinous malt with treacle, grassy hops, molasses, very nice for the age. Xmas Ottawa gathering Dec 13 2013.
4.4 Well, I’ve had this a few times, and figured it was time to review. Pours dark brown with a mahogany tone with light, little latte rim and bubbles. Smells magnificent. Sweet molasses, candy, caramelized sugar, plums, brown sugar, malt, malt, malt - so delicate and sumptuous. Flavor follows with the same and add in some really nice nougat flavors and cola flavors. Medium on light syrup body with moderate carb and semi dry finish, this hits the spot. I’m glad to have a few more bottles. Really coming into it’s own right now. A really nice beer. Serving type: bottle 04-04-2012
2.8 Pours dark dark amber with a bit of off white head. Smell sweet fig, cross between a quad and barley wine. Taste buttered toast and caramel. Toffee, cream, vanilla, sweet boozy red fruits. Tough drinking, big bodied. Not that great
3.5 Bottle to tulip. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Nose is sweet toffee and dark fruit; reminds me of a barleywine. Taste is dark fruits, berries, roast, vinious, booze/bourbon. Full mouthfeel. Not as good as I had hoped.
3.7 Bottle I think I picked up in Vegas right before we moved and am now drinking in Ohio. This is like a barley wine meets molasses. I thought it was pretty tasty and the 11ABV was deeply hidden. I’ll be waiting for 2020 for sure!
4.1 Natifest ’10 8/07/2010: Deschute Jubel 2010 "Once a Decade Ale"... Aroma: Sugary, slightly fruit, lots of rich malts; several layers of depth. Appearance: Deep caramleized sugar color; dark beige crown. Flavor: Superb MALTINESS; sugary with lots of malt depth; nice, moderate bitterness; difficult to describe! Palate: Full bodied; thick, milky, and smooth; sticky on the lips. Overall: DELICIOUS! 1 pint, 6 fluid ounce bottle (10% ALC. BY VOL.; Best After 01/29/11 09OK). Rating #344 for this beer.
4.0 25 July 2013, bottle. Light brown and a but cloudy. Nose is sugary sweet wort, some raisins. Med/thin body and mildly fizzy. Sugary, white raisins, moderate alcohol. Awesome!
4.1 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Upon pour there was an instant aroma of sweet malts and cotton candy, but there was a whiff of beer that smelled similar to a barley wine. Liquid was a deep shade of mahogany with a firm layer of thin film head. The flavor was sweet and sticky and had a heavy backbone of malts with an addition of fig, cigar and a minor background of root beer. Such a good beer.
4.0 Thanks to BOLTZ7555 (JBOLT...trade with him now!!) and Chase for sharing. Ruby red pour, not going down hill for those that have claimed this needs to be cracked now. Nice Carmel notes, sweet, smooth, mild carbonation, one of my favourite beers of the night.
3.9 Bottle - Cherry, strawberry and nice mellow malts. Cloudy mahogany with no head. Same berries as in the nose, some oak and the grape comes through. Great beer.
3.8 Aroma is rich and malty. There is lots of caramel notes of varying degrees of darkness. Moderate toffee and moderately light chocolate also compliment the caramel. There is a hint of roast present as well. Some dark fruit - cherries, figs and prunes along with a light sherry note and a hint of alcohol. Pours brown with ruby highlights and a light brown head of moderate thickness with a hint of red. The head recedes fairly quickly to the edges leaving a thin film on top in the center. No lacing and medium sized legs. Flavor is a bit more muted in malt than the aroma but there is still a lot of sweet dark caramel, some toffee, hints of burnt sugar, some light chocolate and roast. The flavor is much more fruit forward with lots of cherry, plum, berry and fig. The sherry note is present in the flavor as well. Moderate bitterness to balance the sweetness and a medium low alcohol spice in the finish that becomes more prevalent as the beer warms. As it warms the malt character also starts to overshadow the fruit notes which is nice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. There is a lore but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. The beer is sweet but it doesn’t come across as too sticky. Overall a nice beer but I much prefer the aroma to the flavor. The fruit notes add a touch of acidity which isn’t playing well with the bitterness and sherry. The beer improves as it warms but I can’t help but wonder whether this bottle is in a middle year where the flavors are clashing with the age. Maybe with more time the age would settle in nicely.
4.1 2010 bottle thanks to Brandon. Brown pour with tan head. Nose is leather, stone fruits, dark caramel, toast. Flavor is leathery, dark fruits, plum, caramel, slightly oxidized. Bone dry finish, incredible beer! Thanks Brandon!
4.3 Soft, creamy, with raisin and cherry notes on the nose. An attractive ruby colour, with a very thin head. Taste is a delicate and perfectly balanced; somewhat sweet, thin body.
3.3 Murky brown color with no head. Light brown sugar aroma and a hit of what will likely by oxydized malt in the flavor. Not as bad as I expected, but definitely some of that "old stale malt" character. Quite dry. Some molasses/brown sugar.
3.6 Bottle, 04/05/2013. Pours dark brown, thin beige head dies to a swirly crema on the surface, viscous soapy lacing. Aroma on the sweeter side, toffee and candied dark fruits, tart vinous notes not too heavy, dull chocolate background, vanilla and caramel, oxidation in the finish. Taste is dark fruits and berries covered in chocolate, medium roast notes with faded resinous hops, bitterness, a bit of booze with long bourbon aftertaste. Medium full palate. Still drinking alright, changed considerably from what I remember upon release
3.9 Holding up really nicely 3 years on. The aroma suggests that the alcohol content is higher than most 3-year-old beers normally do but there is also some solid rye bread, brown sugar, and caramel. The palate is rich and warm with nice sweet bakery flavors. Wish I had more of this.
3.4 Pours a cloudy deep amber/brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is oxidized and has mild dark fruits. Flavor has some caramel and dark fruits with light earthy hop notes...definitely oxidized. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is cardbaord/fruity.
4.3 650 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with medium head. Aroma similar to a Belgian Quad: brown sugar, roasted malts, and subtle dark fruit. Beautiful flavors (as of 2013) of caramel, rich malts, raisins/prunes, and light spice.
3.9 17th July 2011 Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, dry with mild fine carbonation. Creamy malt with lactose sweetness and rich dark toffee. A little oaky vanilla. Mild orange hop brings up the rear. Dry finish. Nicely joined up rich tasty treat.
3.9 Dark brown in color, clear with a thin tan head. Nice Carmel and big wood and super strong. Let this beer warm up and the fantastic flavors and aromas come out.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a hazy deep amber with a purple hue and a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a note of bread with a backing caramel sweetness. Flavor starts with an underlying sweetness and an earthy bread note that has a bit of hay.
