3.8 Pours a murky dark brown with a good carbonated foam head that laces my glass. Taste, hints of burnt caramel, roasted malts, yeast, raisins, and sweet fruit of dates. The finish has a good bitterness, has an earthy taste, roasted flavor, and a mild sweetness that lingers. The mouthfeel and body were nicely done too. The aroma is of sweet syrupy sugar, roasted malts, dates, nuts, its rather herbal, and there was a hint of spices. There is a weak old hop scent. The alcohol is well hidden in the taste and aroma. Overall a very special brew. A perfect winter brew.
3.8 A lot going on in this one. Aged well. A lot of candied fruit and herbal notes. Spice from the yeast and hops on the finish. Nice color and feel.
4.2 DATE: February 8, 2017... OCCASION: enjoying the thought of the first snow day of the year tomorrow... GLASSWARE: Duvel snifter... pours a dark black body, with a creamy grey head... raisins, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, toasted nuts and licorice... sips a medium to full-bodied draught that smooths out to what can be considered a most subtle 10.4% alcohol... a sheen of brownout smears the glass as it drains... a dynamic mix of chocolate, raisins, vanilla, coffee bean, some nutty hints, with a strong licorice and bourbon intonation... a heavy, boozy, powerfully subtle strong ale that came as a gift from Jerry... dry at its finish, prunish and winey and worthy of a slow draw... fruity, textured and worthwhile as a sipper... perhaps a one-off, but a good companion for the night before a snowstorm... Deschuttes is capable of putting out some big beers, for sure....
1.4 Sampled in 2016. It’s as you’d expect from an imperial version of Jubelale. It’s got a lot of fruits, caramel, & herbaceous hops, but then it also follows suit with that super astringent booze finish. Chalky, bitter aftertaste. After a couple of sips, that aftertaste becomes unbearable and hard to return to for more sips. One of the most disgusting Deschutes beers in their reserve series.
4.4 As a stronger version of the much-loved Deschutes winter release, Jubel is the kind of beer that would seem right at home with a warm, fruity dessert and a crackling fireplace. It pours dark red/brown. Toasted barley, spices, dark fruit, and toffee on the nose. The flavor starts with fat caramel malt at the fore of the mouth. Prune, plum, fig, date, and raisin gradually take shape. A bit spiciness at the finish. It’s a full, warm beer yet it’s quite easy to drink. In terms of complexity and malty tastiness, Jubel can keep pace with the Belgian holiday releases.
4.0 Bottle. A- Caramel, dark fruits, candy sugar. A- Dark mahogany color, dark liquid, light brown head. T- Caramel, figs, plums, dark fruits, slightly sweet. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- With 2 years of age, this one was nice. Fairly complex and smooth as hell. Loads of caramel and dark fruits. Not too boozy either.
4.0 Bottle shared with Stevie because I started a new job and it was a great day. Aroma is caramel, red wine, barrel, toffee, malt, wonderful. Appearance is reddish brown, hazy, light tan head. Taste is caramel, red wine, barrel, toffee, some light booze, bitter malt, great. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, barrel and red wine caramel aftertaste. Overall, this is quite enjoyable.
3.5 Deep brown with a small head. Full of booze and oak, red wine, toasted bread, molasses, toffee, slight tang, and some darkly ripened fruit. Full, slick body. Rather nice.
3.8 From a bomber. Pours a dark brown and makes a thin beige head. Aroma of malt, candy sugar, and booze. Tastes of malt, raisins, plum, red wine. Yum.
3.4 Thanks Logan! This one might have been getting infected - green apples. Still couldvtwste what would have been bready super sweet, winter spices, dark fruit. Too bad.
Dommage
3.8 Big Wood 2016, Brouwer’s, Seattle. Dark mahogany, dissipating thin foam. Lighter body, light spice. Notes of wood, bread, and some muddiness. Hides the alc quite well. A bit underwhelming for expectations.
3.7 Pours a dark golden brown with some nice tan head. Maybe some orange in there too. Nose is very sweet. Lots of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit: raisin, plum, and apricot are all present. The fruit comes through as does toffee. Not nearly as sweet as the nose would indicate. There is a little bit of grape and oak too. The barrel is more pronounced here. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Somewhat crisp. Good, but I think I let this age too long.
3.9 bomber to snifter pours a medium dark brown with no head. aroma is dark fruits, caramel/toffee the pinot noir barrel and the oak staves and of course alcohol. the flavor was right on target, dark fruits, including figs, raisins, oak, pinot noir nice warm alcohol burn on the end. delicious don’t remember if I bought 2 of these or not but this is delicious. flavors blended so well together.
3.8 During NYE 2016-2017. 650ml bottle from the brewery in Portland. Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is malty, candies, dark fruits. Taste is the same. Good.
3.6 Draft at the brewery. Hazy dark amber with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is toffee, raisins, spice, fig, sherry barrel notes. Flavor has a nice toffee base, good spice, medium sweet, not much bitterness, good barrel. ABV well-hidden. Fuller body, average carbonation, drinkable for what it is. Still cellaring a 2010 and 2015 for 2020, for whatever that’s worth.
3.6 This brew is a murky brownish-amber color with a medium light beige head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of oak, dark fruits and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of vinous oak, malt, earthy hops and brown sugar. The finish is moderately boozy with an oaky bourbon and dark fruit aftertaste. A little disjointed, but decent overall.
3.5 Bottle.A: Opaque mahogany with a cappuccino head and legs.N: Raspberry and Currant jam, toffee, oak, leather, tobacco, coffee, earth, peppercorn, burnt brown sugar. Almond.T: Quite bitter. Almost astringent from the oak. Decently sweet.M: Medium body, noticeable alcohol, crisp carbonation.O: Hard beer to rate. On the one hand, the nose is great. On the other, it?s seriously bitter. Split the difference; Jubel 2000 is still tops.
3.8 Jubelale is a decent winter brew, and I really enjoyed this ’imperial’ version. The Pinot grape and barrel characteristics melded nicely with the base flavors. Aromas and flavors have a nice complimentary complexity. I’m not a big fan of beer aged in wine barrels but this worked out for me.
3.7 Bottle. Brown pour with tan head. Sweet, fruit, spice, fruit and yeast aromas. Belgian spice, fruit and yeast flavors.
2.8 2016-10-07 Sample from bottle @ Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival. Bitter taste of black berries, cherries, white wine and oak. Very dry aftertaste.
3.9 Best after date of: 1/23/16. Gold wax on top this 650ml bottle. Color shows a deep opaque brown, thick lasting head that laced the glass on the way down until conclusion. Aroma is plenty of Pinot grapes, layers of malt, bold oak. The pinot wine adds a vinous character. Big malt bill adds chocolate/ caramel hints. Ends on dry oak. Oak lingers well after the sip. I am really digging this right now, good level of complexity. This maybe at / or near it peak right now. I like what the Pinot barrel did here. I am digging this!
3.5 Clear brown colour, beige head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, red wine and vanilla. Sweet flavour, wood, red wine. Malty finish, wood and grapes. (from 65cL bottle @ RBBSG IV, the Hot and Sweaty Edition, Gent 2015. Thanks for sharing, ElManana+1!)
2.6 So this score might be too high. This is strainy, with a jumble of flavors that don’t quite work. Some sweetness that stays far too long. Smells nice but otherwise disappoints. Best thing is that my parents found this somewhere mispriced for like $3.
3.5 Sample at SBWF 2016. Hazy brownish with a small head. Sweet with a lot of dried fruit, caramel, malt and ok. Also some hints of vanilla. The body was kind of thick and the finish long.
2.0 Aroma of brown sugar and vanilla. Pours a murky brown, no head. Taste is where this goes south, waaaay south for me. Weird sour white wine with sugary sweet plums and raisins. Bitter finish. Not a fan. First and last time I have this.
2.0 Although I haven’t had anything exceptional lately, I haven’t had anything terrible either... until yesterday. Deschutes Jubel 2015. This is a beer that cost nearly $30 (which I got as an Xmas gift.) This is just a boozy mess of jumbled flavors. Sure it has many different characteristics, however none of them seem to blend. Despite the huge price, I had to pour the last half down the drain. Even being objective from a beer judge standpoint there wasn’t a lot to like here. And if you know me, you know how objective I am Sadly, this is happening to most of the Deschutes "big beers", such as the Black Butte XX series, and the Abyss. Mirror Mirror is the only one that hasn’t deteriorated as much. Too bad most of you wouldn’t remember how good the early versions of these beers were. I am seriously starting to lose respect for Deschutes due to this. And talking to some of my peers, I am not the only one.
4.4 Aroma is bourbon, fruit asa malts and hops. The flavor is bourbon, complex malts, fruit and a mix of alcohol, slightly sour and mild alcohol heat in the finish.
3.7 Bottle share. Pours a deep amber color, slightly cloudy, small sudsy off-white head. Aroma of toffee, caramel, wood, dark fruits, brown sugar. Flavor was some wood, dark fruit, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, sweet malts. Full bodied, creamy, soft carbonation, sweet to finish.
3.9 22 oz. bottle from Dutch’s from notes. Pours a murky brown color with a thin beige head. The aroma is rich toffee, raisins, oak, brown sugar, alcohol and some hidden hops on the nose. The flavor is sweet malty goodness with big caramel/toffee notes, brown sugar, oak, molasses, prunes and other dark fruits, mild spices, dryness to the finish. The alcohol is warming and adds to the experience. This is a very nice brew, but not the same experience as the Jubel 2010.
