Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

3.4 Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma is roast and molasses. Taste is brown sugar, moving to roast and some coffee. Finish is roast. A decent stout.
3.8 Light on in the taste, bold in the palate, like a Vengaboys song about politics
3.8 12 oz bottle, dark brown opaque. Chocolate and molasses aroma, coffee and burnt grain taste with strongly bitter finish.
3.7 Pours a dark brown to black with a foamy tan head. Aroma of semi sweet cocoa. Medium body with a creamy texture. Taste is lightly roasted malts, dark chocolate and cocoa with a hint of coffee. Very smooth. Not very big or bold for a stout but still smooth with very pleasant flavors. Pretty enjoyable.
3.9 12oz bottle from TW. Pours black with lasting tan ring. Roasted malt, coffee, high cocoa dark chocolate, smoke and mint. Medium carb, full body. Rich and roasty with a drying mocha and molasses finish. This is a seriously tasty stout.
4.0 Ar: Roast and coffee; an edge of char and burnt pineapple; sweet oak. Ap: Black and opaque; small head, dark tan, with low retention, settling into a ring and a bit of suds and nebulous whirls. T: Coffee, char, toffee; oaky complexity, mildly sweet and tannic; ash and dark chocolate; bitterness is medium high, earthy hop flavor; some red apple and pineapple esters; finish is ashy roast and dark chocolate. M: Medium body with high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: Satisfying, substantial stout; a lot of flavor while still being drinkable; great, robust roast, chocolate, and coffee flavors; the oak is a great accent, particularly for an unoaked beer.
4.2 coffee, chocolate malt and hops put together slightly unbalanced but appreciably as the brew is packed with flavor. molasses and tar with a bit of smoke. almost chewy and the nice scratch like menthol.
5.0 I've been trying other stouts which I've liked, but have always come back home to this. Truly, this a great example of a stout in my view. From the aroma, to the overall flavor, this is a great brew.
2.6 Really complex beer, not really in a good way for me. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is caramel & espresso, taste is chocolate, espresso with a burned aftertaste, what put me off was bitterness which I didn't like.
4.4 Bottled version. Jet black with a thick foamy tan head. Wonderful rich aromas. Flavor is smooth and tasty with rich chocolate, coffee, and molasses. Well balanced bitterness. Rich creamy mouthfeel. This one delivers a lot of complexity for a single stout.
4.2 I’ve had like four stouts today so I can’t really tell the difference at this point. Chocolate, malty, hop bitterness, Smokey finish. Good shit.
3.3 Charcoal or fire burned initial flavor. Coffee back with a hint of chocolate. Not bad but a little to bitter for my liking
4.0 Butelka. Aromat kawa lekka przyjemna, czekolada mleczna, ciemne słody. W smaku gładkie bardzo, lekko oleiste. Leje się trochę jak olej.
3.5 (torréfié, µ-noix-choco, bouche ~crémeuse sur l’espresso sec, last > amère, milieu et fin h2o, no tripe, accroche pas)
1.5 This beer is far from 'robust and deeply rewarding'. More like day old coffee with some added lemon juice and charcoal. It is sour, watery and overall terrible. The only reason you would want to linger over it is because it tastes so bad you can hardly drink it.
3.9 Nitro version on tap. Sample at Deschutes Portland. Deep brown with an espresso coffee style dense head. Loads of chocolate and coffee with some roasted malts. Hop bitterness actually suprisingly notable in the taste. Really nice!
4.0 12 oz gifted bottle (thanks Dave!) poured into tall chilled glass. This beer presents itself dark as the obsidian glass that specs the volcanic area around Bend, OR. Deep roasted flavor of espresso, chocolate, toasted barley - nicely offset by local hops. Not too bitter, not too sweet - a perfectly balanced example of West Coast style stout. Another winner from the master brewers at Deschutes.
3.9 Chocolate aroma is enticing and dark brown colour w frothy head adds to the attraction. Espresso flavor is forward and creamy mouthfeel on palate. Delicious!
4.3 Nitro tap at Capo’s in San Fran. Pour Black and Tan head. Smooth nitro. Toasty and roasty. Smooth with malt fullness.
4.0 Good. Chocolate. Tasty.
2.0 Cold bottle. Pour is big and black, was hoping this was not impy stout. Clean sterile malty nose. First taste is big black burned wood in liquid form. Bitter strong, and almost marches into impy territory. Bitter smacking lingering back of throat thang. So much in such a short time. Difficult in the end. Long finish. Big bastard baddazz beer. Watch out!
3.5 Fles 35,5cl in Seattle. Stevig, roasted malts, bitter, koffie, zoettonen. Beetje dun. (9-2016).
3.8 From bottle. Charcoal, dark coffee, charred oak, hazlenut. A crisp stout, full flavor, not harsh, very drinkable.
3.9 Pours a rich black color with thick nitro tan head. Roasty coffee aroma. Rich chocolate and roast malt flavor. Silky texture. Notes: on nitro at Country Icehouse
3.4 Aroma: From bottle, chocolate malts, lightly alcohol, rich caramel sweetness. No noticeable hops, and not picking up any distinguishable esters. Appearance: Dark brown, almost black with no light penetration. The head is thick initially, rocky, then thins to thin ribbon lacing the beer, remaining rocky in texture. Its color is a rich milk chocolate. Flavor: Roasted malts are strong, with a chalky bitter finish that coats the sides and back of the tongue. Very strongly malt balanced, with hops in the finish as bitters but not distinctly flavoring the beer. Mouthfeel: Body is medium with high carbonation. No alcohol warmth noticeable, and a bitter high astringent flavor due to the roasted malts. Overall: A good stout, with high smoke notes, but not my favorite flavor profile, so i am sure i am missing a lot of the subtle notes in the beer.
3.5 ciut wodnity stoucik, chudawy nieco, ale może moje podniebienie rozwydrzone risami ma wypaczony ogląd. wszelako nader cne piwko, bez szału..
5.0 Americas best stout hands down. After drinking stouts for twenty years, thats a fact. Sweet malty with notes of chocolate. You will never find a better beer to pair with rich or spicy foods. Ps. Oregon beer is now the worlds best
4.4 Aroma: sweet chocolate, roasted grain or maybe even sunflower. Taste: sweet chocolate, white coffee, cocoa. Head is nice, carbonation is at medium level.
3.9 Dark stout with deep deep red hue and little to no nose. Strong sorghum less the expected sweetness combined with a dry and slightly bitter walnut. Finishes dry and clean. Lovely paired with double dipped chocolate covered peanuts from the Confectionary in Sycamore IL
