3.0 Bottle poured a clear reddish gold with a dissapating white head. Aromas of carmel, light pine and a hint of lemon. Palate was medium bodied. Flavors of light carmel, a bit of pine and light citrus with a lingering bitter finish.
3.3 From the bottle. Pours a light orange amber; the aroma is mildy hopped, slightly sour, amply malted. The flavor follows, laid back on the hops by PacNW IPA standards. fairly well balanced out by the chewy malts, a bit sour and metallic on the tongue. While this is no standout, it seems to be plenty drinkable, and I think better than the Inversion IPA that supposedly will be its replacement.
3.2 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy amber with a small, off-white head. Fruity, citrusy nose. Medium-bodied with some caramel and notes of grapefruit. Bitter finish. 300406
3.7 Malt character nicely complements the hop bill, bitter but not over the top. Certainly more on the english style IPA side than American; sort of a hybrid, but very well done.
3.3 Hazy light amber color. Light hoppy aroma, lightly fruity. Medium malty body, with a reasonable amount of hops; the hops are lightly fruity and a bit herbal (camomile). Drinkable.
3.1 Bottle. Light orange colour with a weak head. Very nice hoppy aroma. Hoppy flavour but not a very good blend.
2.9 Bottle. Orange colour with a off-white head. Light floral hop aroma and a light sweet malty, floral hop taste. Medium body with a light dry finish.
3.5 Bottle. Cloudy golden coloured with an off white head. Aroma of malts, fruits, hops and pine needles. Flavour of malts, hops and pine needles.
3.4 (12 oz bottle: Obtained in an informal exchange of a few miscellaneous brews with SDbruboy, thanks Cliff!) We’ve carried this in my store for ages, but I’d never bought a six-pack, presuming instead that I’d find it for sale as a single (which I never did). I also didn’t expect it would be a beer I’d want six bottles of, but I was wrong on that front too. This isn’t a big, West Coast IPA, but instead is a really nice beer that is true to its British styling, showcasing the hops without bludgeoning the palate into submission. Crisp and hoppy, but not citrusy or hard-nosed bitter, definitely English hops in here with a bit of West Coast bite thrown in for good measure for a long, hoppy aftertaste. Lightly sweet and grainy malts are mild, but set a nice base for the hops to shine. Fairly fruity overall, just a hint of butteriness, lightly nutty in the finish. The hops have enough presence to keep the palate nice and clean throughout the session. Body is medium, carbonation is soft, the mouthfeel is clean, crisp and smooth. Pleasant grainy maltiness and a clean aroma of British hops in the nose. Hazy, golden in appearance with a small, off-white head that gradually settles to a ring. Plenty of patchy lacing is left on the glass. Another Deschutes brew based on the British style, and as usual, restrained and very well-executed.
3.8 Nice blend of malts and hops into a very smooth drinking IPA. The amount of bitterness was great, it featured a nice amount of sweetness, and finished with nice bitter kick with a hint of floral tones. Nicely done by Deschutes.
4.0 OK. I loved this one. It’s funny how sometimes a beer gets a magic cachet and when you drink it the beer falls a little short. Other times you won’t expect much and the beer delights. This is an IPA, not a sledge hammer. It pours a cloudy almost opaque apricot, with a large white head. In the mouth it feels like a British bitter on tap ... full and a bit creamy but without the very active carbonation typical of American ales. The taste is something unique in an American IPA ... balance. Malts and American hops in perfect balance, with a good bitter finish. For contrast I had some Three Floyds Dreadnaught ....too much alcohol, too much hops, too much screaming. The TF has a higher rating; I really like the Quail Springs.
3.2 BB 11/05: Pour hazy holden with a dense bright white head...smell is fairly weak hop nose with a hint of grapefruit...Rastacouere’s description is spot on, I almost want to just copy his rating...mouthfeel is a tad on the still side...some sweet malty flavor up front and the hint of hops bittering at the end...I think this is tasty, and wonder what a fresh bottle would be like...there’s lots of faint hop throughout this beer but if it was fresher I think it would get a gigher rating from me...
3.3 12oz, BB nov. 2005. Nice looking pour, a gentle hazy golden displaying active nuclear carbonation that doesn’t translate into agression in mouth. The head is white, mostly lasting, but small throughout. Slightly faded hop aromas nevertheless offer up nicely pointy spicy flavors with a floral/woody backbone. Obvious malt backbone, rather soft, lightly toasty. Crisp in mouth if the effervescence is not as durable as I might have hoped. Grows quite dry, finishing with a floral and grassy bite. Another very clean and restrained Deschutes.
3.5 Bottle. Bottle conditioned. Aroma - floral, malty. Pours a little bit cloudy, yellowish orange, ~1cm off-white head that disappears quickly, but leaves some foam that laces in the glass. Taste is light for an IPA. Balanced pretty strongly towards bitterness, but not a lot of hop flavor. Mouthfeel is pretty light, which makes this very drinkable. I’d almost call it a lawnmower beer. Different for an IPA, but enjoyable.
3.1 Bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a thin white head. Aroma is slight, piney, citrus, flower and malts in the background. This is kind of weak on the hops for an IPA, IMO. This reminds me of Bass or Fuller’s Pale Ale. Slightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is thin an watery.
3.5 Floral, citrus aroma. Light orange, white head. Balanced bitter with slight sourness. Smooth bitter finish.
3.9 Pours a beautiful golden amber color with a nice thick head that quickly fades away leaving just a little sticky lace. Aroma is a little on the weak side for an IPA, faint, piney hops with just a little maltiness in the background. Taste is great and crisp, the dominate hop pressence bite that you expect from an IPA is perfect. Very good beer and out of bottle as well
3.1 12oz. bottle. Slightly hazy yellow-orange with a small white head. Harsh chalky and grassy hop aroma with some mellow malt underneath. Lemony herbal hop flavor with a subdued malt character. Grassy, chalky resinous finish. Mouthfeel is light medium, dry.
3.1 Somewhat grassy, otherwise floral aroma. Cloudy, yellow-golden in appearance with medium carbonation. Starts balanced but quickly becomes too sweet and then skunky. Good mouthfeel, but not enough to overcome the other aspects. A below average IPA.
4.3 Color: amber honey. Nose; citrus, malt, slightly nutty. Palate; medium nectar. Smooth hops for an IPA. Great flavors. I appreciate Deschutes, they have a definable style appealing to the curious drinkers who want to try something outside their usual brew but in a totally different genre. If you want to try an IPA but are a little discouraged by the press, try this one. It’s a great intro style, mellow and smooth.
3.4 This beer pours with a lightly hazy, full copper color that is topped by a frothy, light tan colored that is initially about a finger thick. The aroma is herbal and full of notes of pine. The aromatics in the finish have a dry, toasty malt note to it as well as a resinous hop note to it. The resinous aromatics are the most prevalent, but there are some subtle notes of citrus as well. The aroma overall though is a tad muted for an IPA. The taste is lightly sweet up front, which helps to accentuate a light citrus note, which is ultimately drowned out by a resinous, herbal pine note. It finishes with a sharp hop bitterness that is almost biting. The beer is actually a bit on the light side, in both flavor and palate. Could certainly use a bit more oomph though, while the bitterness is solid and biting, it needs either a bit more malt or a bit more flavor hop additions. It is nice and quaffable though and as the beer warms up a bit the citrus note becomes a bit more prominent. Purchased via mail order: Liquid Solutions
2.5 Bottle at home. Pours decent head on top of a honey colored, slightly hazey beer. Aroma is earthy and floral, slightly sweet and biscuit like. Faint hint of diacetyl (butter). First taste is nice and bitter, then quickly to caramel, then another quick move to hop flavor (herbs and citrus), then all flavor is gone like Kaiser Soze. No real time spent on any flavor. All of the transition of flavors were to quick, not very much depth of flavor. Verbal Kent couldn’t have told a better story about this beer, but it wasn’t good enough for me to drink again. It was however, a fair representation of an English IPA.
3.2 A good but not outstanding IPA. 6% ABV. A good head with a good balance of mat with hops. Would probably be ouutstanding with the addition of some extra malt.
3.8 Pours a nice deep amber color. Aromas of hops/hops/citrus. Strong hop flavors with malts and a nice dry finish.
3.3 Less hop aroma than the Mirror Pond. Definitely has that English style of an IPA, like the Full Sail (interesting note: apparantly one of the original brewers from this company jumped ship and started that up too). Could explain the similarities. And though this is hoppier, I prefer the Mirror Pond pale.
3.6 Pale golden color with a medium creamy head. Earthy, clearly English hop aroma with some light grain notes and a hint of fruit. Lots of nice grainy flavors and more earthy hops. Not really all that bitter. Clean, light, and well-balanced mouth feel. Nicely done.
3.2 Bottle poured a hazy orange with a smallish head. Light pine and citrus aroma with a bitter, yeasty, hops and citrus flavor and dry tangy finish.
3.3 (Bottle) Pours a lightly cloudy orange bodywith a moderate white head. Aroma of spruce, citrus, and herbs. Hoppy flavor with an undiscribeable finish.
3.0 Had a decent pine aroma. Copper color body and off white head. Flavor was medium bodied and consisted mostly of hop bitterness. Decent citrusaftertaste on the palate.
4.0 In the wake of an Arrogant Bastard... worthy, but only barely... Golden, fruity, hoppy, yep! Nice, but not arrogant... worthy all the same.
