Destihl Wild Sour Series: Flanders Red

Destihl Wild Sour Series: Flanders Red

Flanders Red is an acidic, sour ale with an initial impression of tart cherries and sour candy that dissipates into a complex palate displaying both a sharp lactic sourness with a backbone of caramel and biscuit malt profiles and minimal hop character. The dry, wine-like finish accentuates the complex malt profile and bright fruit notes showcased in this brilliant red colored hybrid of a modern Flanders and German-style sour.

3.4 (Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 11 Nov 2018) Dark red colour with creamy beige head. Fruity, sourish nose with caramel, red fruit and cherries. Malty, fruity, tart taste with notes of caramel, red berries, raspberries, cherries and a tart finish with a slight sweetness. Medium body. Low bitterness. Fresh and tasty, but fairly uncomplicated and lacking some vinegar character. Quite nice.
3.8 (12oz can) Pours a hazy amber body with a medium beige head. Aroma of caramel, cherry, leather, and toffee. Flavor of cherry, plum, caramel, and berries.
3.5 (~porto blanc, troussepinette, cassis cream, ~bois-wild, ample, cerise-acide (mais pas assez), end/last ~banyuls, light)
3.2 355ml can. Slightly cloudy, amber-ish, red-brown colour with small, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Lactic, fruity aroma, notes of vinegar, green wood, sauerkraut, cautious hints of morello, red berries and plum. Taste is dry, tart, slightly fruity, minimally woody, subtle sweetness is incoporated in hints of morello, red berries and plum, lactic hints of sauerkraut. Lacks depth and complexity compared to the paradigmatic Belgian template. Quite refreshing and drinkable though due to its simplicity.
3.2 Pours clear chestnut with a two finger, light tan head. Aroma is cherry and light candy sugar. Taste is light candy that immediately builds into strong sour cherry. Finish is sour.
3.9 Can. Dark Ruby red color with an off-white head. The aroma has a sense of tart cherries. The taste is acidic. Very enjoyable.
3.8 Can from Crafty Bottle Lincoln. Deep rubyvolour with a thin off white head. Aroma fruity cherry, grape and sour. Taste light sour. Full body.
3.5 Can poured a hazy reddish amber with a small lasting creamy amber head. Aromas of caramel, funk, earthiness and light cherry. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry tart finish. Flavors of caramel, earthiness, citrus and a hint of fruitiness with a crisp dry tart lingering earthy citrus finish.
3.9 Pours a clear bright copper red from the can with fluffy tan head that dissipates to leave light lace. Aroma of big berry notes over light vanilla tannins and musty funk, minimal acidity. Taste has more acidity than the nose, lactic and acetic acids right up front that linger through the fruity berry notes, tannins gone. Dry finish makes you keep wanting to come back for more, and acidity is fairly mild for the style. Pretty darn nice.
3.8 Sampled on tap at 2018 Centennial Fest, it poured a clear dark red colour with thin but persistent foam. Grainy, definitely tart, just a little sour. Light body with bone dry finish. Strikes me as a redder Berliner Weiss, like a malty quick sour. Less complex by far than a classic example of Flanders Red Ale, but very tasty in it's own right.
3.2 Pours a deep reddish brown with a thin tan ring. Not much of an aroma. Taste is tart and tangy with some cherry flavor. Full mouth light dry tingle. Finishes dry with a lingering woody taste. Tastes more like dry cranberry juice than cherries. Ok but not that great.
3.3 Can. Hy-Vee Oktoberfest 2018. Poured brown, off white head. Aroma of fruit, tartness, wine. Taste was sour, tart, sweet, cherry, wine.
4.0 Can with December 24th 2018 stamped on the bottom. Looks to be a clear mahogany with a massive head of foam, sheets of lacing. Loads of tart not sour cherries in the smell. Biscuit malt compliments. Slightly acetic aroma but more of a vinous character. Vinous flavour rocks. Biscuit malt is a little more hidden than in the smell. Cherries are tart but there's a certain sweetness to them; could be the malt influence. Whatever, this is delicious. Basically light bodied with gentle carbonation..until the finish where it gets a bit spritzy. Super good. Thanks Jacob for the can!
3.8 Sample at SBWF 2018. Hazy dark red with a small head. Aroma of funk, lemon, berries and light wood. The same in the taste. Fresh and with a rather dry finish.
2.7 Can @ sbwf 2018. Poured amber, clear, light head. Funky sour, wood and tartness. Tart flavors with wet wood, berries. Dry finish. The sweetness in between here disturbs me.
1.8 Canned at Stockholm Beer Festival. Clear copper colour, small head. Tart lemony nose. Citric with light body and clean mouthfeel. Lactic and citric. No trace of wood, just sharp and simplistic.
3.5 Can. Hazy deep red with barely any head. Rich funky nose with flowers and some leather. Flavors of leather and funky yeast. Stone fruit also present. Smooth and well done.
2.8 Can at home. Pours reddish has a sour cherry taste not really liking this beer.
4.6 Gorgeous red color with medium head. Very sour, hits your jaw on the finish. Subtle malty cherry flavor. Keeps sourness all the way through but is easy to drink. Absolutely delicious.
1.7 Found from can from brewpub in Champaign, Illinois. Dark red-near copper color. The tart outweighs any noticeable cherry flavor.
4.2 Can, very nice looking beer. Looks like a rodenbach, tastes like a rodie and even smells like a rodie! Nice job on this one, a very tasty example of a domestic made sour brown beer just like the old country. I need to get me a case of this yummy stuff. Oh my, so good! So friendly, so easy and so quick it was down the hatch. Quite good overall beer tasting experience. Finish is very satisfying. This is the best beer I've had since Hi-Wire Gose @ 4.2 on 1/19/2018. NICE
3.5 Smell is fruity, oak, tart, bit dry. 'T is full, dry tart, oak, mild sweetness. Dry ending. Pretty decent. More so than the current score makes you think.
3.1 355ml can takeout from Tilt, Birmingham. Drunk in the comfort of my own home. Pours an encouraging reddish amber, generally clear, small off-white ring atop. Aroma is lightly acetic, red wine, berries. Taste presents a nice slow-burning acetic sourness with a nice berry sweetness, some blackcurrants, cherries, moderately tart, a little too lactic and sticky, but I don't mind the sweet berry notes if a little too sweet. ok.
3.7 A reddish brown color with a white head. Aroma contains some cherries, sour apples, and caramel. The flavor is quite sour with some malt character. Cherries and caramel notes dominate. This may be a little less malty than other Flanders Reds I've had but overall still pretty darn good.
3.2 On tap. Pours reddish-brown color with a small head. Aroma of fruit, grain and slightly tart. Taste of tart dark fruits and grain with dash of sea salt. Some bitterness that lingers into the finish. Moderate body, tart and bit acidic feel. Not one of my favorite styles.
3.4 6/17/18 - Tallahassee, FL - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton. Dark, reddish-brown pour, no real head. Aroma has some raspberry and cherry sourness. Solid sour flavor, nice pucker qualities. Pick up tart, sour cherries, some burnt toast. Mouthfeel has a pleasant thickness to it.
3.4 Tart cherries and a salty finish gives the beer a bold mouth feel with a wine fade.
4.1 vom Fass im Top Hops NY. Tolle rot-braune Farbe, cremiger Schaum. Rote Johannisbeere, Himbeere und Crannberry Duft. Kräftiger sauer-fruchtiger Antrunk. Rote Beeren, Cassis, Rose Wein. Im Abgang bierig. Schönes Bier.
2.7 Draught. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is lactic, vinegar, raisin, and hints of cherry. Taste is sour; vinegar, dark fruit, and tannins. Dry. Medium body. Medium carbonation.
3.0 12 oz. can. Pours a thick, rapidly collapsing, ivory head, over a clear copper (SRM 19) body........nose is currents, lactic acid, light malts, no hops........taste is intense lactic acid, mild fruit tones (currents, raisin), slight malts, finishing dry with lingering acid tartness, no hops.....mouth feel, medium light body, mild alcohol, moderate carbonation. This misses the style of Flanders Red Ale somewhat with very, very high acid, minimal vinous tones, relatively light fruits, and mild malts. An enlarged malt backbone would improve. BJCP 5/2/9/4/5
