Dieu du Ciel! Charbonnière

Dieu du Ciel! Charbonnière

This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty.

3.9 Aroma is sweet roasty malts, highly smoked grains, caramel and cask wood. Taste is rich sweet malts, caramel and light rye. Finishes with slight funkiness and tartiness but well rounded overall. Appearance is a clear amber body with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.
3.5 Pours a dark copper colour with head to the bottom and nice lace. Taste is smoked meat and spices, where they aiming for a Montreall smoked meat sandwich? Not heavy on the smoke like some of the German styles. Might even be sessionable.
4.0 Bottle at home. Pours deep amber, nose is smoked bacon and sausage, salty, toffee, taste is sweet smoked sausage, dry, malty, pretty tasty.
4.2 341ml bottle (dated 13/07/2012) served in a weizen glass around 6 degrees: It gives you clear mahogany pour showing a good amount of spontaneous carbs and topped off by two fingers of fizzy tanned head. Its retention and lacing are properties are above average which give it more points for appearance. The nose, no surprise, is dominated by smoke and charcoal. The interesting thing is this toasted/smoked almond side to the nose from the malts able to get through, which I thought gave this Rauchbier some originality. I couldn’t really get any hops so I guess they got lost in the smokey features. On the tongue, you a semi-rich nutty/roasted malt attack wrapped up in blanket of smoke. Again, the hops don’t really stand out but I found the pairing of the malts and smoke just fine. It finds it way at the back of the palate with long smokey finish. The brew has a good density and a certain oily feel. Overall I thought this was a good Rauchbier. It respected the style, has great body and most of all, the smokey aspects weren’t too harsh. This beer would be the perfect addition to a marinade for grilled beef. Cheers!
3.6 Bottle from BrewDog Online. It pours clear deep red-brown with a small beige head. The nose is rich smoke, underlying sweetness, bacon frys, oily and a touch of toast. The taste is bitter, toasty, firm smoked malt, honeyed cereal, earth and wood with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Great nose to it....almost addictive. Well rounded. Well executed smoked beer.
3.9 Pours a clear reddish copper with a small foamy white head. Aroma of peat, smoke, campfire and earthy wet wood. Taste is peat, wet wood, smoke, earthy notes and some earthy notes. Great smoke beer that?s smooth and complex while having full flavor and being easy to drink for a smoked beer.
3.5 Really interesting smoked beer, the aroma is quite light, but then a real mouthful of smoke, but then a cleansing finish.
3.6 Great easy sipping rauch. The pour is a muddled amber with a finger of dense beige head. The nose is firstly smoky and lightly roasted with nutty and toasted malt aromas. The smoke is emphasised well without being over the top. A mild sweet malt in the middle with notes of caramel, toffee, nuts and bready notes. The smoke is moderate with a nice character that blends well with the malty flavours. Overall, a great smoked brew.
3.5 Yet another interesting take by these guys. Pour is a beautiful mahogany colour with a trace of fizz that disappears quickly. Nose is heavy smoke, wood, sweet fruit, caramel and a bit of earth. Taste is sweet malt at first, then the smoke sort of wafts in and lingers through the end. There’s a pleasant hint of bitter dryness on the finish, too. Definitely not a session beer, but damn drinkable on a crisp fall night.
4.0 Pours a clear reddish copper with a small dull white head and some lace. Aroma is peat, smoke and earthy. Flavour is peat, smoke, mild malty sweetness, faint bitterness and some earthy notes. Alright well I love peat and smoked malt beers so I?m definitely a fan.
3.5 Bottle to goblet Bacon, smoke, maple. Brownish red, bubbly tan head. Bacon, malt, some syrup.
3.0 Very smoky and meaty aroma, unfortunately it reminded me a lot of the wet all meat purina kitty chow I give my cats sometimes as a treat. Taste was a lot better than the smell. Nice smoky malty flavour.
3.3 341ml bottle. Clear copper with a frothy tan head. Flavors are smoked meat, charred wood, pepper and caramel with herbal and fruity notes. Light to medium body, good carbonation, smooth texture.
3.3 34 cl bottle @ home. Pours clear reddish amber with an off-white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma and flavour are subtle smoke, salt, and caramel - with a dry finish.
3.8 341ml brown bottle. 5.4% abv ont he label. Dark orange. Tall and firm beige cap. Nose has campfire, earth and meaty notes. Taste has some charred malts, smoke, quite earthy with some contrasting malt sweetness. Medium body, very smooth carbonation and a bit of a creamy mouthfeel. A well done smoked beer, very pleasant.
3.1 4th October 2014 Clear bright red - amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry and a little crisp. Mild minerals. Thin malts, a little lactose like sweetness. Contrasting smoke, mild and not acrid. Touch of dried fruits and even a whisper of sour fruits before a semi dry finish. Fairly well joined up if a tad too dry.
3.4 341ml bottle pours a medium amber color with a finger and a half of off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is smoke and hints of caramel. Taste is a caramel malty sweetness underneath a modest smoke with a grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied with decent carbonation. A nicely done smoked beer that is well balanced and not overdone.
3.3 From 341 ml bottle in tulip glass. Pours a clear amber with a thin pale head. Very smokey and woody nose. Smoked ham. Taste is smoked ham too with a burned note that lasts for a good while. Pretty light beer. Almost no bitterness. Good representation of a Rauchbier!
3.8 Bottle from Brewdog Birmingham; clear deep mahogany red pour with a thin beige head, smoky meat aroma, taste is a bit smoky bacon crisps (Walkers), some phenols but not of the harsh variety, quite mellow. Some sweet caramel and nuts, burnt toast, impressive smoked beer.
4.0 Draught @ BarVolo Dieu du Ciel tap take-over. Clear hazelnut pour, negligible head. Nice beech wood nose and flavour. Canadien bacôn! Light and very drinkable, lovely.
Personnally, it tastes like smoked ham. I tried the beverage cold and warm and I’d say it is « better » at a warmer temperature. This beer didn’t taste good for me, it’s a question of preferences, I found the aroma and the taste nasty.
3.3 Pours a clear brown with a thin white head that offers some lacing. Nose is quite simply of smoke, I couldn’t smell anything else at least. Taste is lightly sweet but also has some light acidity, offers some nice nutty and smokey flavors. Body is light to medium, carbonation low and finish is lightly bitter. Not bad but a far cry from Dieu du Ciel’s best.
3.0 Bottle 341ml. Pours clear brown with low beige head. Aroma is of smoke, malt, some hints of burnt caramel. Taste is of smoke, some bitterness, salt, acidity. Palate: Light-medium body. Soft carbonation. Overall: Not too good. Not awfull either, it’s just that I don’t really enjoy that kind of brew.
1.8 Incredibly dark bronze amber. Smells like ham juice and smoked bacon. very smokey, lots of green beans, ham and bacon. incredibly smokey some bitterness. hard to finish.
3.4 Draft at Dieu du Ciel with Linh, Minh and Angela. Pours a deep amber red body with light white lacing. Aroma is rubber, bacon and band aids. Mouthfeel is medium with the bandaid character still present unfortunately with flavors of burnt plastic and meat.
