Dieu du Ciel! Pénombre

Dieu du Ciel! Pénombre

Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

3.0 On tap (Paris beer week). Dark brown ale with nice brown white head. Nose is roasted malt and caramel. Taste is mainly coffee and chocolate. Medium bitterness, medium texture.
3.5 @ Havregatan 20130406. Bottle from Systembolaget. Roasted malty and caramely with chocolate.
3.1 Bottle had on 3.30.14. See-through dark pour. Smell and aroma are similar - not much to it. Some black tea in flavor. A little earthy. Not much going on here.
3.4 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Caramel, coffee, pine, citrus, chocolate. This beer is lacking the hops that I would expect from an IPA. Maybe I got an old bottle. More porter like.
3.6 Bottle at La Palette in Toronto. Bottled 05/13 - really?!?! Black with a smallish creamy white head. The nose is very roasty with a delicate resiny hoppy note. Tastes really-really roasty, it’s more like a porter or a stout, the, sweetness, and the black bread crust and faint sourness cover any hints of hoppiness. The palate is dryish, carbonation medium active, and the body medium. So where’s the IPA?
3.7 11.5 oz single bottle from Mile High Wine & Spirits. Roasty, dark and hoppy with a lingering dry finish. A solid Black IPA all the way.
3.4 11.5 ounce bottle. Very dark with amber highlights. A big beige head leaves some lace. Not a big aroma but some cinnamon and light fruit. The flavor is much more aggressive. Big citrus hops that bring a good grapefruit puckering bitterness. Some sulfur. Rich malts and what seems to be a common yeast for this brewery.
3.8 Light perfume aroma bulked up with roasted malts, pours black with a small diminishing light brown head, heavily hopped great balance of flavours roasted malts, cookie/nutty, sticky full bodied ale good carbonation lightly sulphury on the tongue, thanks Sherrie.
3.8 Another from my brother-in-law. Clear ruby brown with a finger of tan head. Smells of soft toasted malts, molasses, light yeasts and in the background hops. Tastes creamy sweet toasted malts with a hoppy bitterness. Smooth on the palate. Solid brew.
3.6 Pours a solid black with a short tan head and lacing. It has a strong resin and dark malt aroma, with a dark malt and toast flavor up front and a bitter, hoppy finish over a heavy-medium body.
3.6 (bottle) clear dark brown colour with a small brown head; aroma of stewed fruit, smoked fruit; mostly dry and smoky flavour with a long, medium bitter finish
4.5 Bottle from BottleDog, London. Pours a very, very dark brown, with a dense beige head. Aroma of vanilla, dark malt, chocolate and pineapples. Thick mouthfeel. Great complex flavours of tropical fruit, burnt malt, bitter pine and rye bread. Finish is sharp, bitter resin, coffee, toast and berries.
3.3 Backlog rating. 12oz bottle from BD Camden, London. It pours a hazy dark brown color with ruby edges and a medium sized off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts and dried fruits, toffee. Taste is quite harsh roasty and bitter with notes of coffee, earth, cocoa, tangy red berries and piny hops. Finishes resinous and bitter. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok BIPA
3.5 Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel.
4.0 With Z, pours a pitch black color with a small java head. Nose is chocolate, malt and licorice. Taste is chocolate malt with some nice sweet bitterness. Finishes on bitter sweet notes with the same tasty and flavorful aforementioned tasting notes. Quaff Score 8 / 10
3.8 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head and aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is roasty and chocolaty up front with hoppy bitterness into the dry finish.
4.0 Fast schwarze Farbe, ordentliche beige Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr hopfig, reifes Obst, röstmalzig, Kaffee.
3.9 341ml bottle served in a pint glass. A: Pours a dark brown to black forming a big bubbled beige head. Good retention and tons of lacings left in the glass S: Roasted malts and flowery hops. Black IPAs are quite weird because they do have this mix of black roasted beers with pale and hoppy beers T: Roasted and hoppy. Good balance. Roasted malts, notes of dark chocolate. Biscuity. Quite bitter which is a mix of roasted malts and hops bitterness M: Medium body and carbonation. Roasted and hoppy bitterness aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Great Black IPA. 3.7 BOTTLE. shared RW. Jet black with nice tan head. Dark choc/vanilla on the nose, with the dark choc up front and a smooth bite at the back end, more of a porter than IPA. Sourced Capel Cellarbrations
3.7 More like a porter with extra hops (which is not to say bad). Pours a coal black with light, toffee colored head. Roasted chocolate and caramel on the nose with just a hint of floral hops. Heavy on the palate with your typical roasted caramels and just a hint of chocolate and toffee. Hops come through lightly but remain on the palate just a bit longer than the roasted notes. I’d give this a higher rating if it were just a porter, but as a black IPA it wants just a bit more balance with the roasted and hoppy notes.
3.9 Growler. I like it when black IPA’s are more like hoppy porter’s, so this is right up my alley. Strong hops, strong roast, strong beer!
3.7 Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, cookie dough, lighter pine, and some faint burnt notes. It pours a dark brown with significant orange highlights. It has a two finger khaki head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker soapy ring. There is some thin soapy rings left behind on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with starts with moderate chocolate (milk chocolate and dark chocolate) with a touch of caramel, light roasted malt, and a hint of cookie dough. The finish has moderate pine, burnt notes, and light grapefruit. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft moutheel. Overall, it definitely falls into the hoppy Porter category for me. Also, the burnt flavors are a little too much for my taste.
3.7 Bottle pours dark brown with light edges and two finger thick white head. Nose is earthy roasty soil, fruity light pine, touches of dusty cocoa, light malt fruit. Taste is somewhat thin, roasty malt fruit and wet soil and leaves mix with some soft piney cocoa and grass. Finish is bitter roasty malt fruit and light cocoa.
Boa Black IPA.
3.7 Bottle. Cola brown. Cocoa and coffee grinds aroma. The taste adds bitter piney hops and earthy malts. Big mouthfeel all around. One of the better black ipas.
