Djævlebryg Nekron

Djævlebryg Nekron

Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: An accumbent experience; that is one way of describing the adventure ’Nekron’. A discrete smoky character from both peat and beech smoked malt defines the bottom layer. In the middle, a light caramel sweetness and the vinous alchohol take over. The roasted malts and barley add notes of coffee, chocolate, and roasted rye bread. The moderate hop bitterness mixes willingly with the whole. Nekron can easily stand alone but enjoys the company of heavier dishes or chocolate rich desserts. [Moving from stout to RIS as it is 8.5%abv -GT2]

4.0 Flaske: Så fik jeg endelig ratet denne øl. Kulsort med et flot mokkabrunt skumhoved. Duft af let ristet malt og en tand chokolade. Mundfylden er enorm lækker med en blød karbonering. Smagen sidder lige i skabet. Fin fin øl.
3.0 Nose is stale espresso, leather, cream, toffee, nougat, feel is medium, taste is cola, stale coffee, tar note, burnt malt, sweet rotten fruit
3.2 Smokey & sweet with aroma of brown sugar & chocolate. Black with small brown head. Taste of dark chocolate, smoke, coffee & caramel. Medium body, sticky texture, average carbonation & bitter finish
4.0 Backlog. While it doesn’t quite live up to it’s big brother (The Pride) this is well worth a try.
4.3 330ml bottle @Cimmeria, Oviedo.01-03-2014. In short: a robust Stout. Pours black with nice tan head. Some head retention, good lacing. Roasty, coffee and liquor aromas. Medium body, silky texture, soft carbonation. Taste is quite bitter, roasty, coffee, chocolate, liquorice. Extremely well balanced and enjoyable. Really good one.
3.8 Pours black with nice brown head Aromas of peated mats, tar, figs, dades, alcohol Taste has brown sugar, tar, bitter black chocolate
3.7 Draught @ Mikkeller Bar - SF. Almost solid black pour, negligent foam. Potent brew: very peaty (peppery?) with all the usual heavy stout suspects. Dry bitter finish. Somehow it works, but not for the feint harted.
4.2 Botella 33cl en CerveZeres. Increíble esta stout, hacía tiempo que no probaba una tan buena. Espuma gruesa y oscura como el chocolate. Notas muy intensas de café y un claro amargor. Estupenda.
3.9 Black-red color, aroma full of dark chocolate a touches of smoke. Flavor is bitter, dry, toasty w/ a smokey finish. Very nice.
4.0 Bottle. Black with a thick and creamy brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, cacao, syrup, soya, Sweet taste with slight bitterness. Medium to full body, smooth mouthfeel.
3.4 Bottle from Systembolaget. Ar: roasty, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, licorice, ash, light smokiness. Ap: black colour, big Brown head, lacing. T: very soft bite for the style, very mellow, noticable sweetness, salty, no bad flavours and nothing, nothing at all that excites you, this is the essence of boring. P: fullbodied, soft carbonation, salty and roasty finish. O: not a bad brew, but not at all worth the hype.
3.2 Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen (BB May 2014). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (non-opaque, flashlight-tested). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), with light notes of vanilla, smoke. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Pretty mediocre, nothing close to Gudelos...nice enough aroma but simple, and watery and kinda sour in the mouth. Not a fan.
3.9 Bottle. Pours black with brown-beige head. Roasted, vanilla and licorice aroma. Roasted taste, with dark chocolate and vanilla, slightly sweet. Full body.
4.1 Tap. This had fantastic malt flavor upfront and a pleasant bitterness that wasn’t overpowering. The smokey aftertaste was very good and not overpowering. Excellent overall.
3.6 50cl, Danish brew, thx to KingCecil!, complex smoked Stout, roasted/malty and slightly sweet/smoked, not too heavy, balanced, hazy, small head, good brew
4.0 Nose of strong roast, sweet vanilla and licorice. Some darker coffee and chocolate there too, but more the vanilla and licorice smokyness. Poured a bubbly tan head that retreated with little lacing to a nice ring and rafts of bubbles. Bitter on the sides of the mouth right away, with that malty smoky licorice up front and centre, but as it finishes, the sweetness and richness of the oily texture move back leaving the coffee and vanilla, chocolate and licorice sweetness. Only a linger of bitterness after a few moments, and you want another taste! It’s well outside my stout comfort zone, but so complex and pleasant an experience as to bear repeating. Which is easy given the other 1/2 litre in the fridge. (Bottled draft from Keg. 11c, Weizen glass.) Not a beer I’d drink all evening, but certainly one I’d have again!
3.5 50 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a little sediment and a tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and liquorice. Flavour is chocolate, coffee, and liquorice with a bitter, hoppy finish.
3.6 Tap @SWBF12, rated from backlog. A robust and sweet stout with smoky, chocolate and coffee notes.
3.6 Bottle. Close to black with a medium sized light brown diminishing head that leaves little lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light ashy, light citrus hops. Taste is medium sweet and light/medium bitter with a light acidic touch. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Lingering roasted malt in the finish with some light bitterness.
3.9 02-MAR-2013, bottle @home, from Høkeren. Dark brown with light brown, lacing head. Roasted aroma with a touch of malty tartness. Taste is roasted with coffee and roast - almost burnt. Quite hoppy with citric hops. Creamy with soft carbonation. Very find stout.
3.9 [Thanks to fonefan]. 50cl bottle. Black colour with a minimal and quickly dissapearing tan head. Aroma is licorice, light smoky, chocolate and toasty. Flavor has the same characteristics as aroma dominating the coffee notes but without disturb. On palate results creamy, smooth and rounded, very good compensated.
4.3 500ml bottle. A very dark beer with a beige head and some lacing. A little sweetness mixed in the aroma of roasted malts, smoke and chocolate and a hint of hops. Medium body with medium soft carbonation, creamy with a bitter finish. Flavor is sweet with roasted malts and coffee, chocolate and smoke with just a little hops in the bitter finish. An all out great rounded stout. No abrupt shifts in flavor from start to finish. I like.
3.8 Sample from 50 cl. bottle. Black with a small, tan head. Aroma with roasted malts, chocolate, light smoke and coffee. Sweet taste. Medium to full body with a creamy and pleasant texture. Palate is excellent for a stout. Finishes quite sweet with roasted and caramel malts, coffee, peat and licorice. A very good stout. Highly recommended, Djævlebrygs best.
3.8 Sample @ SBWF 12. Black colour with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, dried fruit. Flavour is sweet, roasted malt, chocolate.
3.6 Sample at SBWF 2012. Sweet smell wtih some chocolate. Similar taste with chocolate, dark bread and a light hoppy aroma.
3.6 Stockholm Beer & Whiskey 2012: trevlig mustig vätska fylld av brända toner med mycket kaffe. Trevlig eftersmak. Gott
4.0 A bottle from Barley Wine Copenhagen. A robust but rather sweet potent stout wih a smoky extra dimension on top of coffee and chocolate tones. Complelx, rich but yet fairly drinkable. My first but not last Djaevlebryg.
