Djævlebryg Old Mephisto

Djævlebryg Old Mephisto

Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

3.6 "deep fruits, caramel, plum. little hop presence. masks the abv quite well. low carbonation, and a bit thick, making it a decent sipper. i liked it, bit wasn’t blown away, though another friend thought it was the best of the night."
3.5 Slightly fruity with berries on the nose. The taste is sweet, caramel, slightly fruity and light alcohol. Good bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth for a long time. Easy to drink and minimal carbonation which appeals to me. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
4.1 Bottle bought at systembolaget late 2011. Beautiful deep clear deep red liquid with a nice compact big off white head. Aroma is spreading in the room. Aroma is of sweet fruits, raisins, lots of caramel and toffee, dates, dark fruits, sugars, bready. Smells amazing! Taste: a nice sweet flavor in there with caramel, milk chocolate and fruits. Perfect level of carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden but still detectable. Really nice flavour. Positively surprised by this one! I think some years in my cellar did this beer good :)
3.5 Mörka söta toner, kanske lite russin. Fyllig mikrofonen, ABVn lyser igen lite.
Kolasirap i färg. Vacker. Stadigt ljust skum. Vattning, vinös smak och en kemisk sötma. En varmt mjuk beska stiger sakta i eftersmaken.
2.9 Backlog. Slightly too sweet for my taste, but definitely a decent example of the style.
3.0 12 % ABV stated on the bottle. Ar: sweet, malty, caramel, butterscotch, alcohol, vanilla, earthy hops, grass, jam, honey, dried dark fruit Ap: slightly hazy copper/ruby colour, weak bubbly beige head. T: heavy sweetness, very low bitterness, ABV well integrated, slightly vinous, but that’s about it no real complexity to the taste, sort of one-dimensional. P: full bodied, low carbonation, warming finish. O: crude
3.8 Clear, dark amber. Small, offwhite head. Aroma of raisins, dark yeast, alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Taste is discretely vinous, some dried fruit, not too boozy, not too sweet.
2.4 Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen (batch OM001). Virtually no head. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (molasses, malt syrup), moderately yeasty (dough, sweat), with notes of alcohol, brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft/flat carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Another dumper from Djaevlebryg, doggone it. Lots of raw yeast, various sugar aromas, and not much else. As consistently awesome as Gudelos is, they sure do have some shitty beers in their lineup.
3.0 pours unclear light brown reddish with a small light beige head, some retention. caramel-plenty, grass, pepper, cloying brown sugar and molasses, spoiled fruits - tons in fact, caramelized nuts, licorice, woodsy notes, bit of garbage and vomit. moderate carbonation, medium to full body - oily, sticky and cloying, grassy-peppery finish. did not improve with age. not boozy tho. still.. blah. DP.
3.7 On tap. Dark brown colour with white lace. Malt and caramel aroma. Malt, caramel taste, very sweet. Alcohol warmth, medium to full body.
2.6 Bottle @ Café Langebro . Pours murky brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma is quite malty with caramel, dades, nuts, brown sugar, spice, overly ripe or almost rotten dark fruit, spice, cardboard and yeast. Taste is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, carbonation is near flat. Finishes sweet, nutty and spicy. Almost like a bad malt liquor.
3.7 Bottle from Systembolaget. Dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet and has roasted notes, caramel, figs, raisins, dark fruit and alcohol. Taste is sweet with with ried fruits and caramel as main contributors. Some alcohol shines through in the end.
4.1 500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a hazed fig-amber color with a small off-white head that settles into a small film with a ring. Small rising carbonation bubbles are visible on the edges. Aroma of toffee, dates, figs, raisins, brown sugar, and toast. Right on the money. Flavor of toffee, brown sugar, raisins, dates, and figs, with some really nice spiciness late, like a little black pepper and rye. Nice and balanced, and not overly sticky or sweet. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. I really enjoyed this, and was pleasantly surprised because I was a bit disappointed with Gudelos.
3.9 24.05.2013. On tap at Henriks øl og vin, Bergen. Dark brown colour with off-white head. Aroma is sweet with rich malty tones and lots of dark malts and alcohol. This is a real strong malty and sweet caramel bomb. Flavours of strong worth of dark malts. notes also of yeast and som faint bitterness. Very good!
4.1 Pours a three finger off-white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and alcohol nose, flavor is dark fruit, caramel and some alcohol. Decent barleywine. Pricey at $9.99 for a 500ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA.
3.5 On tap @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours dark brown, with a creamy, finger thick slightly coloured head. Dark and sweet aroma with lots of ripe fruits, molasses, tobacco and port wine. Full body with soft carbonation. Sweet fruity flavour with burned malts as well as molasses and succades.
4.0 On tap @SWBF12, rated from old notes. Aroma with loads of sweet caramel and sweet fruits, also notes of spice and nuts. Taste is massive with toffee, caramel, nuts, fruits.
3.5 On tap @ Henrik. This is a deep ruby red one with a medium sized lasting light brown-ish top. Sweet sticky caramel and loads of sweet fruits on the nose. Cacti, toffee apples, glazed nuts and a soft spicy tone. It has a soft prickling carbonation level and a heavy thick full bodied mouthfeel. The taste is not bad either, and it’s not hard to tell that this is a proper barley wine. Loaded with sweet toffee and caramelly malts. Surprised how much nuts I find in this, cause the aftertaste is just the same as I get when I have with bad continence allowed myself a handful of nuts from board.. The alcohol is surprisingly well camouflaged, and it feels really lightdrinkable. Ends with traces of old ripe fruits, sweet blue plums and red apples. Wait, apple is a fruit, so nevermind that last bit. Is a plum a fruit? A berry? Hmm.. I should know this. Have I had to much of this? 08.02.2013
3.8 [Thanks to fonefan]. Bottle. Light brown colour with an off-white head with an average lasting. Aroma is sweet, caramel and spicy. Flavor is malty, toasty, caramel, slightly dry fruits notes, bready. The final is sweet with a good alcoholic finish.
3.5 Pours a dark copper brown with a little beige head. The aroma is mild with a light grainy sweet must. The flavor is more full with an English old ale simplistic nature, a bit of a grainy bite with drying grainy bitter. Smooth overall, easy to drink with lower carbonation, lingering herbal earthy notes with a little touch of sweet dark fruits.
4.0 Bottle, 50cl - Semi hazy beer with a large white head. Aroma is malty with notes of spices, caramel, dried fruit and som alcohol. Flavor is malty with notes of toffee, caramel, herbs, some vanilla and a hint of alcohol. Very warming beer and perfect for this time of year. Slight hints of mintyness indicate hopping with Northern Brewer.
4.0 Pours a very cloudy copper/orange colour and a solid dirty white head that lasts and leaves good lace up the glass. Aromas of sweet malt, sweet dried fruits, perfumy, toffee and overall quite fruity. Flavour is sweet fruits, sweet malts, mild bitterness, light toffee, slightly nutty and a warming alcohol character.
4.1 P:ours a cloudy dark reddish amber with a big frothy light brown head. Aroma of sweet dried fruits, toffee, nuts, rich sweet malts and a hint of some fruity esthers. Taste is sweet malts up front with some toffee, dried fruits, oak, slight nuts and a smooth alcohol warming on the finish. Overall a very pleasant barley wine.
3.4 On tap at Henrik, Bergen. Has a deep golden mahogny colour with a small beige head. The aroma is roasted and rich and filled with oak, nuts and some roasted almonds. Again roasted malt at first then more dried fruit, wood, leather and some alcohol. The mouthfeel is slick and soft, and has a light bitterness. The aroma is a bit faint but the beer has a powerful flavour with some roastedness inbetween.
3.8 Pours a deep amber colour, cloudy, with a small tan head. Aroma is full of caramel malt and some slight floral hop scents. Taste is quite sweet with a nice bitterness to it as well. Full bodied, smooth and creamy mouth feel and livelier carbonation. Overall a solid barley wine.
3.6 50 cl bottle kindly shared by Sigmund. Inch thick cappucino colored creamy head that cover a misty deep orange body. Malty sweet, floral honey notes on the nose. Pungent sweet and malty flavors with a mellow bitterness. Slightly overcarbonated, although it suits the beer. Full bodied. Worked well with blue cheese.
4.1 Smells of lovley dark dried fruits, looks amazing, dark and golden, light cream head. Taste is baked plums raisins and a bit of leather? I'm in love with a barley wine, who would have thought that ;)
4.9 I agree with the general assessment of this beer. I don’t think it’s really a good example of the prototypical style of English Bitter or Barley Wine. Whatever you want to call it though, it’s one of the best I’ve ever had! This is what I want out of a cold weather beer. Strong, malty, deep, not too bitter. Beautiful aromas of brown butter and caramel and the taste is fantastically balanced. It might not fit neatly into any category, but you need to be drinking this. I am continually impressed by this brewery.
