Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA

Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA

Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

4.0 Bottle from Highland 9-30-15
3.6 Pours a hazy copper with a slight white head......aroma of fig, excess bittering hop.....taste is quick raisin and fig, the booze which lingers, extreme barleywine malt lingering on the palette, finishing lightly tart with dank bitterness.
3.8 Bottle. Deep gold with note much head. Aroma is hoppy and grains. The taste is surprisingly sweet with a hoppy finish.
4.1 This is not a hop bomb. This is a hop nuke. Amber with thick off white head. Mixed hop aroma, very full. Taste that takes over your mouth and says kiss me. Full hop finish citrus and evergreen. I had no alcohol burn.
1.6 Amber with off white head - Fruity herbal hop aroma - Boozy malt with hops - Boozy malt and hops go to the finsh - This was just to alcohol hoot and boozy for my taste - Just ok
4.0 12oz bottle share at The Bier Stein, Eugene, OR on 21/08/2008. Yes, this was the 21% version. Viscous pour, with no head. Aroma filled with pine resin, fennel, star anise, tinned fruit and musty wood. You could tell it was strong. Kind of like sipping a liqueur. Really nice, though.
3.9 Classic
4.1 Bottle. Pours deep bronze. Boozy, apples, resiny hop aroma. Taste is massive hops, fruity, bitter. Hardcore, slightly abrasive, tasty Mike Tyson facebustin brew.
3.4 330ml bottle. Pours a deep gold with off white head. Hot alcohol on the nose with hints of malt and bitterness. Full body with rich malt sweetness and a lot of hop presence tucked away. Interestingly low alcohol in the flavour. An interesting beer but surprisingly huge.
3.8 2011 bottle. Pours a murky light brown with a small and short lived head of foam. No lacing. Huge notes of caramel in the smell. Sherry and some fruity aromas. Caramel taste up front but not as sweet as the smell suggested. Oxidation brings some notes of Sherry more than Port. A little bit fruity, a lot boozy but at the same time smooth. Reminds me of an aged Barleywine or Old Ale from the UK. Full bodied with light carbonation. I'm pleased.
4.1 On tap at The 024 - tried the 60 - good ipa; tried the 90 - i'd go out of my way for it; the 120 -extraordinary. Someone described it as IPA essence - that works.
1.5 0,3 litre Bottle from Total Wine And More, Laguna Hills, Ca. Amber with white head. Booze, alcoholic, strong, unpleasant.
4.3 De Beershelf. En copa Teku. Viendo Mr. Robo. El alcohol se nota sin molestar, y se sube mucho a la cabeza. Predominantemente maltosa , con notas a galleta, pero el lupulo se nota tambien
4.1 I had this at Global Brew. Pours copper with a white head. Taste citrus, hoppy, boozy. I thought this was good. It thought this was ok strong.
4.5 I was definitely excited to find this. It was definitely worth the price. To label this an IPA is almost unfair. There's so much more to it. It definitely has a Belgian strong feel to it. I poured it from the bottle into a tulip glass. It pours a reddish mahogany with a small, off-white head. The aroma is so complex and appealing. I get dark fruits, molasses, cinnamon, bourbon, and hops. The taste is at first cherries, apricot, grapefruit, raisin, and booze. Later in the glass, you get more molasses, cinnamon, date, and bourbon. There's a tingly burn at times. It lingers quite a bit. This is something you definitely have to savor. Needless to say, it packs a helluva punch. This lives up to the hype.
4.1 Pours deep hazy brown amber with a minimalist tan head. Aroma is bonkers. Creamy dark fruit and wet bready malt. Toasted candy raisin. Taste follows with incredible depth. Finish is strong and brings those sugar hops with notes of pine and some mild bitterness. Toffee and bourbon. Unlike any other IPA I’ve tried. More like a Belgian. Still, awesome and unique.
3.9 Bottle Matt bought back from Dana Point, CA. Pours an inviting amber, cloudy at first but settles into a deep bright limpidness. Small fizzy white head. This is a HUGE BEER. Smells of apricot, goji berry, light fig, candied apple, jam, malt, cream, tonnes of booze and hop. Like a hoppier, less malty, more alcoholic wee heavy — some rye spice in there. Very smooth and despite the massive booze (almost 18%!) it is still surprisingly and dangerously drinkable. Taste has even more booze and jammy fruity malt. The big oily hops and booze keep it from being overly jammy/musty. Finish has some floral/vanilla sweetness and bubblegum esters. Body is oily and big. This is an unbelievably big beer, executed well and with perfect balance. Almost feels like an experiment in how much you can crank up the ABV and accompanying hop/malt in a beer without making it taste like gimmicky or like a spirit/liquor. Huge, apple sweetness and crispness, wood-y whiskey complexity, most enjoyable when it can be nursed.
3.9 Bottle from BevMo in Dana Point at home in HK. Rich ruby-copper pour with fine white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is complex - candied apple, deep pine resin hop, chewy bready malt like a wee heavy. In fact sort of like a massively hopped - with pine resin - big scotch ale. Taste is sweet but not quite treacly and hugely bitter. Jammy fruit, tingly bitterness. Rich palate but not too heavy somehow. Very good enormous pine-forward IPA, balances by giant sweet plum-bread malt.
5.0 Absolutely one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted. I love it!! Wish it was available all the time.
5.0 Easy best Imperial IPA I ever had... You don't know you are drinking 16.5% ABV beer. Absolutely amazing!
5.0 This is the biggest IPA I’ve ever had! I’m totally blown away by its assertiveness! It’s like an IPA on steroids! Small head on the pour, would love to run it through my Fizzics, to bring out the creaminess, and the landmark bitters. I’m halfway through my snifter and my eyes are glazing in pornographic pleasure. This is something you don’t drink like a beer; you need to sip and savor it like a Cape Charles Distillery Bourbon, reflecting on every swallow, toasting the taming of your inner demons. It’s a good day! Can I have 2???
4.0 Seavans tasting, thanks Jon and Gregg. Comparison of 2015 and 2017 versions, both 18% abv (in 2019). 2015: Darker orange our, bit hazy and some beige bubbles. Apple jam in the nose, some sweetness but not sticky, light hops. Taste is soft sweet and boozy, some oak but still drinks easy, especially for such high abv. Hop marmalade, well blended together. Warming, raisins, good balance actually (3.8). 2017: Creamy orange pour with some white foam there. Nose has some grassy hops, sweet tropical fruits, persimmons. Tastes hoppy, sweet and with a good hop bite. Booze there but super hidden compared with the abv it has. Too easygoing. Good and still feels like IPA, not like barleywine (4.0).
2.8 Flaska från trade, vintage 2013. Mörk, riktigt murken och grumlig rostbrun med smutsvit/biege krona. Kanderade apelsinskal, kola, choklad, citrus. Stor kropp, ganska het fortfarande. Viss beska kvar men även här ganska snäll.
4.5 Had this in my fridge for 5 years waiting and waiting for the right moment to open it. Why not tonight. Was expecting a malt bomb or spoiled beer. I got an amazingly complex concoction. Big nose of toffee, hops, rich fruit, sweet bread and honey. More hops than malts, but solid balance on the nose and palate. Medium-plus sweet attack. Palate is still fresh with hops and malty sweetness. Full body, thick texture and a long, slightly bitter, warming finish. Obviously top quality and built to last.
4.4 It took a long time to locate 120 Minute but I did find it in 5/18 at The Cellar in close-by Odessa. The 12 oz bottle is stamped with a born-on date of 4/19/18. A search on the internet tells me that the ABV is 16.5% easily making this the most potent IPA I will have ever had. Time to see what the deal is. My Cowtown Brewing tulip glass receives the pour, a dark orange-gold liquid. The head is a small ring of almost-white, very fine bubbles. The scent carries from a distance, I get pine, candied fruit and citrus. A sip delivers pineapple, grapefruit, a small hoppiness, hard candy. It has a definite alcohol presence, has some heat and is thick for an IPA. The brew gives a cocktail impression, I do not mind. Intriguing. I like it more than expected. Three more to pull out over a period of time. Life is good.
3.2 Amber color. Aroma of pine resin, alcohol, and floral notes. Taste is alcohol, hop bitterness with a hint of malt sweetness and dank earthiness. Tastes sweeter when it warms up. Alcohol is the overpowering flavor. A sipping beer.
0.5 Just perfect
4.5 Pours a hazy golden with small tan head that sticks to the side of the glass. The malt hits first, then what tastes like a Platonic "form" of hops flavor, sweet and bitter melding well. Nose is honey, cream, dates, apple, flowers, faint pine background. There is citrus but I don't know which kind (maybe orange peel?). Longish bitter finish. Heavy body. Quite oily. 120 Minute IPA is bae.
3.5 How: Bottle. Where: Top Hops Beer Shop, New York. Appearance: Hazy orange/amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma: Malt, caramel, pine, resin, hops, alcohol. Body: Medium to full body, low carbonation. Flavour: Malt, hops, alcohol, bitter finish.
3.7 I’ve finally tasted the holy grail. Dark amber with a quickly dissipating white head. Juicy hoppyness hidden under layers of malt.
