Dogfish Head Beer Thousand

Dogfish Head Beer Thousand

Our newest Music Series beer is a collaboration with 80’s indie rock band Guided By Voices, and draws inspiration from what is arguably their most notable album, Bee Thousand. A right lyrical lager brewed with ten varieties of grain and ten varieties of hops and clocking in at 10% abv, this brew truly lives up to its to name. Complex and rugged, BEER THOUSAND is abundant with aromas of subtle strawberry and tropical banana notes with hints of citrus and cereal grains. The flavor is sweet, malty and boozy up front with a warm alcohol bite and a clean, slightly bitter finish. Scarily drinkable for its size and demeanor, this one’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.

3.7 Clear golden with a fast-fading white head. Nice full lightly booze-kissed nose with a bit of yeasty biscuit, honey, lemon and toast. The flavor is smooth and full and robust with a nice mellow sweetness to it that prevents it from being a wallop. It actually doesnt taste any higher than 7%. I mean that as a compliment. Nice smooth undertones of lemon hops and a little grassy saaz, with a dominating force of biscuit and maris otter malt. Theres some honey in there but not like in "honey lagers". Nicely balanced and complex.
3.0 Location/Date:Bottle on February 6th, 2015 with Ben. Appearance: Pours an orange clear. Aroma: Lightly bready aroma. Taste: Light bitterness, lightly bready, faint fruit. Palate:Light medium body, decent amount of boozyness, weird aftertaste. Summary: Interesting imperial pils. My bottle might have been slightly old, but glad I got to try.
4.1 draft. Bourbon, fruit, and malt aroma. Deep golden body with thin lasting head. Bourbon and sweet malts, followed by hints of fruit. Smooth finish
3.7 A different lager. Big alcohol is masked by a diverse grain bill. Some people have called the initial aroma skunky, I would characterize it as different. 12 oz bottle at room temperature in a pint glass. Slight head with good lacing tops a the golden hued nectar. Pleasing to the palate with a good depth of hops. Overall, glad I tried it.
3.9 12 oz bottle. Aroma: malty and slightly skunky, with hints of caramel, bread, and honey. Taste/Palate: sweet and crisp; finishes slightly bitter and tart.
4.0 Poured from a 12. Aroma is sweet and floral. Flavor is grape juice with a sugar sweet taste. Definitely still tastes like beer, but beer with a perfectly woven non-beer flavor to it. Very interesting and great!
3.5 These cats will twist you up. Some of there stuff is so far left of center that it comes up behind you. And it works. This is actually straight forward and dull but really good. It’s a really smooth beer w/ a boost of alcohol. Not sure where it fits... can’t really session it but not impressive enough to be satisfied from the big bottle. Meh. But Quality.
2.9 16th February 2015 Lightly hazy gold beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, mild fine carbonation. Smooth wheaty malts, little cream. Candy sweet bubblegum ester. Little ripe fruits. Smooth dry finish. Mmmm. A bit odd but inoffensive.
2.9 Tasted on 1/21/15 from a capped small bottle, thanks to Churney for sharing. Pours clear dark golden with an average off-white head that leaves average, uneven lace. The nose is sweet cereal malt, honey, and light green grass. The flavor is a touch more bitter, but really all about the sweet honey and cereal malt. The body is full with average carbonation and a long sweet malt and lightly bitter finish.
3.5 Does not come across as a high ABV beer. Strong malt presence from the moment you open the bottle. Cereal grain through and through, no warmth or burn. Tasty lager
3.0 Macon, Ga - Just Tap’d Growler - 12 oz bottle. Dark golden thin bubbly snow white head. Faint distant fruity aroma hint of booze. Light raisin sweetness, some honey sweetness, a touch of booziness, reminds me a bit of a mix between a braggot and a malt liquor. Thick enough mouthfeel. First time I have ever said this in a rating: "Meh".
3.4 Bottle thanks to duchammer via Matt_ducharme shared at Anchorage Jan ’15 Tasting: Poured a hazy orange yellow with a white head. Aroma was fruity. Taste was super carbonated bubbles, nice fresh hops, fruit and didn’t reveal the alcohol content at all.
3.7 80’s indie band? That’s harsh. 750ml bottle. Filtered honey-orange body. Thin, patchy, off-white head. I get the strawberry-banana tones, and they are odd. Kind of mead-like, very sweet. It is sort of drinkable, in a strong pale lager way. It has depth, which I enjoy. the hops certainly aren’t one-dimensional. There is a honey sweetness as well. A pretty tasty end-product, but rather weak in describing what is going on in the beer on the labels. 10 hops? Awesome! Tell me which 10. Pretty awesome strong lager at the end of the day.
2.5 Location: 12 oz bottle shared by jcos, 2/6/15 Aroma: This one has an odd aroma of grains, some grass, and some booze Appearance: It pours a mostly clear golden color with a small white ring of head and not much lace Flavor: The flavor is a little sweet, somewhat boozy, with a mild bitterness Palate: The body is medium-plus, fairly hot, with a dry, alcoholic finish Overall Impression: It’s almost a grainy and grassy rubbing alcohol. I don’t really mean that to sound terrible. It isn’t terrible, but it isn’t good either. I didn’t get the strawberry or banana at all.
3.6 12oz bottle from J while hanging at Havana. Poured a deep clear honey amber with a smaller foamy white head. Aroma is real nice, fruity, pear, grapes, grains, champagne, tropical fruit. Flavor is winey and champagne, fruit rinds and tropical fruit notes. Big body, heat is apparent but pleasant. Better DFH beer I’ve had in awhile.
3.0 Tap . Pours clear blonde , smell is malty harsh , typical lager . Taste is sharp malts , sweet , again typical lager . Nothing really different here than the averadge lager , only that it will get you waisted faster .... Damn , why ????
3.4 Rate #2000! Big thanks to the local DC RateBeer tasting group and everyone who has helped me get here! 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Very slightly hazy orange with half a finger of off-white head. Aromas of citrus, stone fruit, white wine, booze, berries. Tastes of stone fruit, tropical fruit, alcohol, wheat, some strawberry and banana. Medium body with a dry finish.
2.7 (bottle - 12 oz) Clear orange with a thin white head. Very faint aroma of strawberries and grass. Sweet at the start with a bitter and somehow fruity middle and a bitter finish.
2.9 12 oz. bottle from The Hop Yard, Raleigh, NC (enjoyed while listening to "Echos Myron" and "I Am A Scientist"). Dark orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of pale malt, wet grass, and lemon zest. Taste is much sweeter than anticipated with sticky syrup upfront followed by hints of strawberry, orange zest, and caramel. Not bad overall but the cost/benefit of the alcohol makes me not want to finish this and move on to something else.
3.5 Very clear, light amber color with nice carbonation. Aromas of cereal grains, caramel malts, faint strawberry, grapes, husky malts and pilsner like bitterness. Taste is similar to nose, but more sweet and boozy. It also has grainy malts, tropical notes and banana. Medium body and creamy smooth. A very drinkable 10% beer.
3.3 bottle. golden with one finger head. very sweet lager with substantial hops. doesn’t seem as boozy as it is, but boy is it sweet. kind of a mess.
3.2 Fruity aroma. Golden yellow color. Malty upfront yielding to a pleasant hoppy finish. Paired well with mild Mexican food.
3.1 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured clear, golden in color, small white head, no real lacing. Aroma of yeast, malts and fruit. Taste is fruity and sweet, some yeast and some malts. Not bad, easy to drink (for the high ABV); enjoyable.
3.1 This is a messy one. You get everything from both lager and pilsner, plus many other complex things at the time. Lots of carbonation from the bottom of the glass. Head is made of big bubbles. Nose is malty, sweet, lots of grain. Kind of a pilsner on steroïds. Taste is complex but the 10% abv and the over-sugar unbalances this beer way to much. I don’t hate it, but don’t like it much neither.
1.7 Bottled 10.31.14. Poured from a 12 oz into a pub glass on 12.30.14. A: Banana, bubblegum, and grain. A: 1/2 finger head. See through light yellow body. Someone put a Budweiser in my glass. T: All over the place. Grain, banana, bubblegum, honey, and vomit dominate. P: Crisp and oily. O: It was an interesting idea to have ten of everything, but it’s a mess of complex flavors all jammed together. Drain pour.
3.4 Pours a classic golden lager color with a thin, white head. Highly carbonated. Aroma is mostly fruit; orange, mango, banana, and hints of bubblegum. Taste is mostly sweet, with caramel and apricot leading the way to a good if not great finish. Not as boozy as I’d expect for a 10% beer. Pleasantly drinkable.
2.8 Malty aroma, minimal hops, some mild fruit notes. Brilliant dark golden presentation. Taste is clean, pretty crisp, quite malty but light on hop bitterness or flavor. Finishes pretty clean for a 10% lager.
2.9 12 oz bottles poured into a pilsner glass (Jan. 2015) and revisited in July 2015. A - clear gold color with a lot of bubbles rising to a modearte size white head that faded slowly. Ample foam left on the glass as it went down. Aroma - more citrus than expected, with hints of lemon zest and orange juice; fresh green apples, cut grass, green banana and white grape juice. The high ABV cuts through the malt and hop elements but is partially hidden and doesn’t leave an obvious booziness until after some warming. . Taste - The ABV comes out more here than in the aroma. There’s a light caramel sweetness as well as a touch of ripe soft fruits and citrus; faint white pepper, honey and cut grass also appear within the hop dominated flavor. Some light grain base is evident. Feel: Warmth and mild harshness from the alcohol. Medium body with medium-high carbonation.
3.6 Dark golden color with a medium sized, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of honey, toffee, cereal grains, citrus, grass, and alcohol. Taste of toast, toffee, honey, citrus, grains, and dry alcohol in the finish.
3.5 Bottle. Honey, light banana, barley malt and herbal hay aroma. Golden yellow with minimal head. Very sweet banana, light berry, and grainy malt flavor. Alcohol finish. Okay but rough.
