Dogfish Head Black & Blue

Dogfish Head Black & Blue

Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

2.8 Sampled @ Danish Summer Gathering 2015 Trübe sehr dunkel orangegoldene Farbe. Geruch trocken fruchtig, dezent süß, dunkle Beeren.
11/9/9/9/11/9

3.3 Sampled at 8th Danish Ratebeer Gathering, Ulfborg 2015, day 2. Slightly hazy reddish color, small white to off-white head. Smell and taste malts, dried fruits, dark fruits, a bit sweet-bitter. Average to decent body and carbonation.
3.9 750ml bottle: this one pours a hazy Ruby tinged Amber color. Just a wisp of an off White head. Good nose. A bit musty. Red wine grape notes. Light Candi sugar, other fruits, malts. The taste is very good. Malty, a slight funkiness, touch of red wine flavors. Some blackberry also. Unique and good.
3.0 bottle. very funky - not even sure what you would consider this. Fun to share with people, not sure I could have a whole glass myself. Interesting beer
3.4 Bottle. Pours a nice hazy light amber color. Aroma and taste are light tart blue and black berries. Lightly sweet.
3.9 On tap at The Refuge in Menlo Park, CA. Has a berry granola cereal type of vibe. One of the better fruit / wheat beers I’ve had.
3.7 Pours pretty if cloudy copper-amber with medium, chunky off-white head that quickly reduces to minor skim. A very nice looking beer! Big berry nose comes through even before the head dissipates. But while the palate retains some berry sweetness, an assertive citrus hop element adds lemon sourness as opposed to tartness. There’s a nice fizziness from carbonation, but a hot undercurrent from the 10 percent ABV. That turns out to be a bit much for a hot summer’s day. This might be more enjoyable for spring or fall. Black and Blue is also a beer whose palate becomes a bit gentler if it is not straight from the cooler or refrigerator. The color also becomes clearer as carbonation and yeast settle. This is another instance where Dogfish Head has made an enjoyable beer, but its hops-sessive approach and pursuit of relatively high alcohol content trips it up short of its full potential.
3.6 Bottle from Berts. Definite fruitiness, fruit juice sweetness, definite berry presence. Sweet nose and taste, smooth finish for a high abv fruit beer.
3.4 Aromas of banana, cereal, bread, some blueberry, a hint of vanilla. Slightly hazy, dark orange-copper, with a sewhat lasting white head. Pretty dry, savory, jammy. Medium-full bodied.
3.6 Foamy off white head and red amber body. Light banana and sweet corn with sweet berry undertones. Flavors of belgian yeast and some Sweet dark berries and a slight bourbon type finish. Sweet on the palate.
3.1 Pours a rusty-amber. Has a sweet malt and string fruity / berry aroma. Taste is strong with blueberries and other berries / fruit, yeast, caramel and sweet malts. A lingering wine like flavor.
3.5 Bottle 750ml @ Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats, Rehoboth Beach, DE Pours hazy amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, raspberrires, blueberries, blackberries, vinous and alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long warm, berry, vinous and slightly sour finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.6 Tap at monellis. Amber with a purple tinge. Blueberry forward with a wine dryness. Moderate malt with some fig and other dark fruit. Booze is present, but not out of place.
3.3 Draft sample at Logan's Alley - pours a medium copper . Strong aroma of blueberry and white wine . Taste is fruity , mildly sweet with a tart finish . Not bad .
3.8 750 ml bottle. Rose colored liquid topped by a moderate rocky pinkish head. Tart berry nose with a hint of citrus hops. Intense berry flavor upfront with yeasty notes. Warming alcohol burn is oh so subtle. Slightly bready maltiness. Subtle citrus hop innuendo. Fruity dry finish. Belgian fruit beer character with a hoppy jolt.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a transparent reddish amber with a ring of off white head. Aroma and taste of fruit, yeast, and ample carbonation.
3.3 On tap. Looked dark in the glass. Could have been purple. Spicy aroma. Tons of blueberry taste. I’m not too much into these styles of beers, although this one was decent. Does hide the 10% ABV pretty well.
3.5 750 mL bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma is as advertised -blueberries and blackberries - with a coriander and clove hint. The beer is a clear, dark blueberry-purple hue with a thin, pink, fuzzy soap head that has okay retention and a light lace (extra points for unique coloring). The thick oily beer is a medium high sweet and medium bitter bitter mix with a light sour. There’s an abundant, light fizz carbonation to help the medium full body go down. The flavor strikes as a blueberry and blackberry muffin with a peppery clove spice. It finishes crisp and peppery with grass, bread, and tart berries. The aftertaste is clean and astringent with just a hint of spice and tart berries.
4.2 I wasn’t sure how this beer would be. A lot of blueberry beers taste like wine. This blueberry beer had more of a lager taste. I thought overall it was well worth the money.
3.7 On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and dispensed to a snifter showing a fairly clear, reddish copper color, with fair persistence to the finger’s width of soft white head foam, and even better lingering nature to the waves & ribbons of lacing. The nose was expressive cherry/berry, balanced sweetness & tartness, with complementary spice. The taste continued tangy, tart, and sweet, with some modest hop astringency, and lively carbonation, in a medium body. Alcohol seemed hidden behind the pronounced flavor notes as the finale presented just enough dryness to finish crisply. Cordial-like but not too much sweetness allowed nice drinkability.
3.4 Bottle. Cloudy orange-red, light pink head. Blueberry nose. Berry base, light tart base, a hint minerals, vanilla and citrus. Dry sparkly mouthfeel, chewy medium body. Refreshing dangerously easy to drink.
3.5 Typical Belgium yeast aroma with the tartness and mild sweetness of the berries come from this almost clear red brew with tiny white bubbles forming around the edge the glass. Berries and sweetness up front with an underlying tartness in this medium bodied brew. The after taste is black berries and slight warming from the alcohol. A decent brew for sure.
3.7 Sweet, but not overly so. Tart as well. Fruity, but no obviously blueberry or blackberry flavor that I can taste. Finish is all Belgian yeast. Pretty good.
3.6 Berry hue. Light head. Excellent balance with the Belgian. Perfect for after a meal and with a good book.
3.4 Exactly what you'd expect in a berry Belgian. Just a bit tart too, like the berries.
3.0 Fruity aroma. Colour of Ribena. Light fizz. Taste of blueberries and underripe blackberries. Not too sweet like a lot of fruit beers. (K)
