Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

2.9 Not a huge fan. The color is a bit dark and the flavor is strong but not my cup of tea
3.7 Bottle thanks to Alex. Pours a dark brown ruby with no head. The aroma is smoke, roasted malt. Thin mouthfeel with roast, smoke, licorice, good.
3.1 Draught. Inky black with small beige foamy head, strong coffee aroma, low carbonation, somewhat flat coffee dominant taste, thin body, longish finish with bitter coffee beans aftertaste. Good start disappointing finish.
3.9 "i definitely like licorice in my dark beer. it mellows the beer while adding another layer. i also love cascade hops. the chicory is weird, but i really liked it. this is a complex little beer, that’s for sure. haven’t seen it in a while, but i’ll buy it again if i do. 3/09 - great on tap as well. bigger body and complexity than a 5.2% beer suggests."
2.9 Not really my favorite offering from dogfish. Has a weird stale sort of flavor that I think is actually the chicory. Otherwise roasty and fairly dry.
3.6 Black little rimming beige head; aroma is slightly earthy and smoky/peaty; Flava is roasty malt hint of Chocate and smoke; feels light for a stout and fizzy; finishes tangy malty grainy
3.8 Pours black. Aroma and taste are coffee and licorice. Enjoyable aftertaste.
4.3 Its body has a very dark, nearly opaque deep brown color with a dark tan head on top. The pour gave me a tall head with great retention. It is also good at making lots of slippery lacing on the glass. The aroma is full of deep roasted malty goodness with light notes of wood and smoke. A very slight earthy hop presence is also noted. Its medium to full body has lots of malt depth and complexity. The base has deep roasted maltiness with a slightly smoky/woody coffee like character. As it warms on the tongue the middle brings out sweeter notes of brown sugar, caramel and molasses in the malt. Underneath all this is a light herbal/dried leafy hop presence that adds a hint of bitterness and touch of dryness to the finish. The finish is still leaning more on the sweeter roasted malty side however.
4.0 pours thick and very dark with a nice tan head. Fades to a small dense churning at center. Although dark to the eyes I believe there is enough eviendence to suggest a rather robust attenuation. When I smell this beer with my nose I can sense rich malt aromas, Roasted malts and coffee too. Upon drinking this beer I taste a rich roasted maltiness with hints of chocolate and coffee. Hints of bitter earthiness too, at finish. A medium to thick mouthfeel with a dry finish. The aftertaste has a bitterness to it that lingers. A nice well rounded brew in my opinion, worthy of many more.
3.5 Tap at brewery. Black pour. Licorice, oak, coffee, raisin and spice. Spicy coffee in a medium body. Nice
3.1 Pours black coffee dark with a thin cream head and almost no lacing. Smells of coffee, chicory, dark roast malts, and dark fruit. Taste is of coffee and bitter with a hint of sweet fruit at the end. Finish is mostly clean, slightly sticky. Pretty unimpressive compared to the Elysian coffee milk stout I had most recently.
4.3 This is truly a great stout. Really complex, well balanced. Great smoky /coffee/ and light licorice notes. This beer has a full rich body, packs a lot of flavor, and worth every penny. As usual Dogfish does a great job, and hit this one out of the park
3.6 Pours black with a few fingers thick brown head from bottle. Clear taste of chicory and flavorful spices. A bit of bite for a stout which is a nice change of pace. Light mouth feel
4.3 Continuing on my reviews of DFH, I’ve found myself at one of my all-time favorite beers. Mmmmm...here goes. From pint glasses to snifters to even chalices, I’m trying to think what glassware I haven’t had this in. The appearance was always a ruddy orange to brown color with a decent one finger white foamy head that dies within about a minute and left some nice foamy sticky lacing. The way it clings and how it seemed like an eternity before it actually started to even want to start to slide was beyond me - if anything I love the stubbornness of the lacing to stay where it is. The aroma - wow what didn’t thing have in it. There was a nice okay licorice showcasing a nice roasty coffee - like smell that seemed to be increasing in strength as it warms. The taste took all that I previously mentioned and smoothed things out eloquently with a nice touch of vanilla. On the palate, this one sits about a medium to heavy on the body when it’s fresh. I’ve noticed with some age with this, it does end up thinning out a bit. Overall, what an absolutely awesome American Stout, wish I could get this every Autumn it’s released.
3.5 Good stout. Very rich.Lots of coffee and licorice notes. Good and different, but not something I would drink everyday though.
3.5 Transfer from BA review on 2-26-12 - Served in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – A nice deep brown color with a moderate tan head upon serving. The head faded and left a bit of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – Sweet chocolate and roasted aromas first meet the nose. The sweet chocolate aromas fade over time giving more bitter roasty aromas of chocolate and coffee as well as a bit of smoke toward the end. Taste – The taste matches the smell quite nicely. It begins with a bit of sweeter dark malt flavors with coffee and chocolate flavors mixed in. As the taste experience progresses these flavors begin to bitter, eventually finishing out with a nice bitter spiced cocoa flavor. Mouthfeel - Surprisingly it had a rather light body. It was a bit watery and not the most pleasing on the pallet for the beer style. With the lighter body however, it was matched quite well with a bit higher carbonation level. Overall – The stout had some fairly nice flavor, smell, and appearance, but its quite light body took what could have been a really nice moderate abv leveled stout to something of a bit lesser quality. Not bad, but not great.
4.2 A strong but not overpowering coffee tasts with just a hint of licorice. The head is thick and the aroma memorable. This is a great beer to pare with a hearty stew.
3.5 At tap House in Des Plaines. Pretty good stuff very smooth, coffee and licorice flavors come through but thankfully the licorice is somewhat mild. Not sure what taste I’m looking for with St John’s wort. Serving: Tap
3.8 From a bottle into a shaker. Pours dark with thin creamy tan head. Strong coffee notes balanced with mellow caramel sweetness. Similar flavor profile with a nutty chicory finish ... A very good coffee stout.
4.4 Couleur noir acajou avec une petite mousse brunâtre. Mousse a rétention limitée, mais laisse une dentelle durable. Arôme et saveur agréable de café, malt noir, sucré avec un petit houblonnage mi amer !! Exellente
3.8 A very nice coffee stout. Black in color with a medium tan head. Aroma is pleasant coffee and malts. Not overly strong or overly bitter but still has good coffee notes. Nice nutty notes also.
3.4 Pen & Paper Log (Oct 2012) Aroma - full coffee, chocolate, and roast aromas Appearance - body is very dark brown almost black, it’s opaque, the head a tan brown that turns into a halo in quick order Taste - the taste is coffee flavor with a firm astringent bitterness from the smoky nature. There is also some licorice present Palate - body is full, the texture slick and thick, the carbonation appropriate for the style, and the finish smooth with a nice roast astringency.
3.1 (bottle) clear dark brown colour with a small brown head; aromas of coffee, roast; balanced flavour with long light bitter flavour
4.1 Bottled, 0.355l, shared with CanCrusher. Pours almost black with thin creamy light brown head and nice lacing. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and caramel. Taste starts with sweet and sour liquorice / chicory, follows by sweet chocolate and strong coffee, while finish is light herbal hoppy. Full body, creamy texture and soft carbonation in palate. Very interesting stout...
3.2 Pours a black color with a coffee aroma. Taste has a slight hickory wood chip taste mixed with rich rosated coffee. A simple flavored stout that dissipates quckly but lingers on the palate. A smooth beer that was enjoyable.
3.4 Bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Roasty aroma. Flavor of roast and dark coffee. Palate is pretty light for a stout, but I guess that makes sense at only 5.2%. Just picked up this four pack in the last month, but see that it has a 2012 date on it. That probably doesn’t help a light beer like this one. Still though it is a nice beer. If there is such thing as a session stout then I guess this would qualify. Its a nice option. Certainly could drink a couple of these without any aftereffects.
3.1 Bottled 2011: E20:50 Pours a dark brown with a transient finger of tan head. This falls to a scattering of surface bubbles. I can smell the chicory and coffee quickly backed up with a sweet and dark malt backbone providing the slightest milk chocolate note. Nice nose. A fairly dry and sweet stout with a meaty flavor in there. The coffee is present, but subdued. The mouthfeel is dryly light bodied with moderate carb and a wet finish. The aromas on this brew are the primary things going for it. The flavor is a far cry from the smells and the mouthfeel is thin and watery. I would drink again, but not likely to go out of my way for it. Serving type: bottle 01-20-2012
2.8 dark pour with very little head. Coffee flavor was evident on a very light body. It says stout, but drinks much more like an ale. Had a bitter backend that I did not enjoy.
4.1 Bottle 0,33L. Thanks to Kita for sharing. Black colour with light brown, frothy head. Very good aroma of strong dark coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel and brown sugar. Taste sterts light acidic and ends light bitter with strong coffee flavor. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Good one!
3.6 Tasted on January 13, 2013: A: A very dark brown/black color when poured and has about an inch of foam that remains very well. S: Very strong chocolate aroma right up front. Coffee scent isn’t as strong, but still there. I smell something else that I can’t distinguish. I’m assuming it’s the chicory since i’m not sure what that smells like. T: Very strong chocolate notes right off that bat. Coffee notes are stronger in the taste then in the smell. Coffee has a burnt flavor to it. There is a very noticeable cream taste in the end. M: Long lasting coffee taste that stays on the palate. A rather creamy texture left in my mouth. Not heavy in the mouth at all. O: I’m not the biggest fan of stout’s, but I find this one rather enjoyable. If i’m in the mood for a strong coffee tasting stout in the winter, i’ll give this one another go. Serving type: bottle
