2.5Slightly hazy straw color. Good white head size and retention, with belgian lace as the glass goes down.
Nose has a malty bile character. Yes, bile. Not too bad though.
On the palate the beer has the big malt profile you’d expect from a Maibock. This is the most notable feature. Some hops dry things out considerably, giving it a chalky marshmallow taste. Finish is chalky and pastey. Some herbs and spice are present, as well as tea flavors.
Definitely a unique drinking experience if you like Imperial beers in general, but not worth seeking out if you’re not an enthusiast of the style.
3.72nd June 2008. Lots of smooth juicy hops but very little bitterness. A smooth lasgerish malt balances the hops well. A tasty, seductive and easy drinking pilsner.
3.7750mL bottle, bottled 3/21/06, poured into a tulip.
Pours bright, hazy golden orange with a big fluffy white head that recedes very slowly and leaves delicate lacing on the side.
The aroma is extremely sweet, mainly with caramel and syrypy pilsner malts. Some light citrus hops and grass as well as some bready dough.
The taste is light citrus up front with lots of sweet caramel malts and sugar in the background. There is a mix toasted bread and grassy hops before the sugary sweetness of the malts lingers through the finish.
The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with medium carbonation and almost syrupy as it starts to build up on the palate after each sip.
This is one of the better imperial pilsners I’ve had and, after this amount of time, is starting to taste a bit like a barleywine with the big sweet malts starting to dominate. Another interesting beer from Dogfish Head.
3.3750ml Golden Shower bottle from March 2006 acquired via trade from truehumand on BA, and poured into an Anderson Valley tulip glass. Nice hazy golden-orange with a large creamy white head and good lacing. Aroma is very sweet with pilsner malt, lemon, cider notes, and mild grassy hops. Maybe a little oxidized. Flavor is almost barleywine-like with loads of pilsner malt, honey, sugar, and a solventy lemon finish that detracts from the flavor a bit. Palate is fairly full and syrupy, a little much for the style. A little astringent. Pretty good, although the people I shared this with had mixed feelings about it.
3.7(bottle - 750 ml - 2006 vintage) Bottled under the Golden Shower label. Hazy orange color with a fluffy white head. Aroma is very fruity and citrusy with a decent amount of hop bitterness, but mainly floral and sweet notes. Flavor begins with a smooth and sweet caramel flavor that gives way to the floral and juicy hops along with a strong citrus sensation near the end of it. Finishes clean.
3.7Bottle. Orange pour. Fluffly white head. Lots of caramel malt and still a pretty damn good dose of hops for a bottle that was 2 years old. Flavor is sweet and hoppy. A real big up front caramel flavor is followed by a tropical fruit burst of hops. Mango? I enjoyed this one. Glad to try it.
3.3Bright golden orange in color with a small ivory head that left some lacing. Aroma includes caramel malt, citrus, and lemongrass. Flavor or orange peel, honey, and alcohol. A bit syrupy...better examples available.
3.4Bottle@home
Apperance: Golden orange with a thin foam and lots of sticky lacing.
Aroma: Caramel, Citric notes, Hops, Rum.
Flavor: Orange, Caramel, Dried fruit, Spices and alcohol.
Palate: Very sweet with a modest bitterness at the end.
This beer is a bit too sweet for my liking but it’s still very drinkable.
3.6Bottle 1pt.9.6fl.oz.
Unclear medium orange color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, hay, roasted, caramel, dusty, vintage malt, oxidide, moderate to light light heavy hoppy, grass, orange. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate to light heavy bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20090321]
3.4750 ml 06 bottle. Pours a very yellow color with a tiny white head. Smell is sweet with citrus. Tastes exactly how it smells. A good beer
3.3Bottled. A pale golden beer with a huge light orangey head. The aroma is a bit on the light side with notes of hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, caramel, and fruit - especially oranges. The alcohol leaves a burn in the cheeks and the throat.
3.3Bottle thanks to AndyReynolds. An interesting beer, for a lager. Not what I expected from the taste. Fairly sweet and has some decent notes of citrus. It’s hard to think of it as a pilsner though.
3.92007 bottle. pours deep yellow with minimum white head. aroma is fruity and a little hops and slight malt. drinks smooth for the 9% but has lots of banana, sweet fruits, citrus, and a little alcohol burn on the finish. this was really tasty
3.62007 Bottle - Pours murky orange with a medium white head... aroma is musty fruit, booze, sweet and tart...flavour is malty and similarly tropical fruity, banana (not the belgian yeast banana, real banana), cream, some piney bitterness and a shit ton of booze...
3.92006 bottle, 2-3 years old. Quite malty aroma, slightly vinous, hint of dried fruit. Cloudy orange colour. The flavour has some vanilla, dried fruit. A bit oxidized, but has the right level of it. The alcohol is there, but does not take over. Good.
3.5Poured yellow with white head. Aroma of pine. Started hoppy and finished malty. Not bad. Good balance.
3.212 Oz. Bottle. Pours a dark golden color with a white head. Aroma was really sweet, a smelled a bit of honey and citrus. Taste was sweet with a nice level of carbonation. Kind of let me down, I was expecting slightly more out of Dogfish Head.
3.712 oz bottle at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Golden to copper color with small head. Thick sweet aroma with honey, herbal hops and apricot. Bittersweet flavor with honeyish and toffeish maltiness, strong herbal hoppiness as well as grapefruit and apricot. Tasty, but not so pilsner like.
3.8In the bottle from Inari Wines. Pours bright yellow with a small white head. Has the aroma of flax. Freshly cut straw. This is a thick syrupy beer. It finishes with a mild orange coriander hop aroma. Delicious and bring me some more!
3.6bottle - I’m kind of disappointed it’s called "Golden Era" now instead of the much more disturbing "Golden Shower". It pours hazy gold with a one finger lingering white head that laces well. It has a citrus accented hop aroma with some yeast. The flavor is moderately hopped with citrus notes and an ample supply of bready malt for sweetness. This medium bodied brew is good though it doesn’t blow me away.
4.0Bottled in 2007 - fairly aged sample, and it turned out to be in real nice form. Clear golden pour with a creamy white head and generous amounts of spotty lacing. Grassy, peppery aroma that leads to notes of sugary vanilla and pale malts. A touch tart and funky as well. No indication of the 9% abv, mouth feel is sharp and succinct. Bitter hop aftertaste along with a light sweet tartness that rolls. Flavors are real tasty, it’s creamy with generous amounts of grainy/grassy malt. Strong noble hop presence along with a minor lemon/citrus aspect coupled with pine. Delicate for such a big beer, seems nicely aged and is still going strong. Pleasantly cohesive.
3.312oz. Bottled in 2007. Pours a straw color with virtually no head. Mild aroma of pilsner malts and a slight alcohol burn. Overall flavor is fairly smooth with grain and malt characters predominating. Would describe the flavors as being on the sweet side and reminiscent of honey sweetened cereal. The palate is creamy and on the heavier side for a pilsner. Finishes with a hit of bitterness. As this beer is now fairly old, the hop character is subtle and virtually unnoticeable in the nose. Should probably have polished this one last summer.
3.712oz. Hazy orange pour with mild floral hop on the nose. Rich, full taste that is creamy with a great crisp bite. Robust lager, impressive.
3.312 oz. bottle bought awhile ago at Binny’s (Orland Park, IL). Pours a hazed golden hue, bubbly with creamy white head that is moderate and starts to dissipate. Aromas of pilsner malts, very Dogfish-esque malts similar to the carmel malty body of the 60 Minute. Decent hop additions create a nice bouquet of floral and light citrus. Initial is smooth up front, sweeter grainy malts move into a light alcohol presence, with nice grassy and citrusy hoppiness. Finishes with a subtle sweetness, light-medium body with an ABV to boot. Laces well, alittle astringent for the style, but certainly not overhopped. A bit different from most "Imperial Pilsners". This was ok.
3.8Grape in the nose, light, some sweet malt and grain. Similar flavors. Thick palate for a pils, long finish. Really enjoyable beer, alcohol hidden.
3.4Been sitting on this for a while. It says bottled in 2007. The aroma is light, malty, not much to it. The appearance is an orange/copper color, fully diminishing head a little lacing. The flavor is bitter, a little acidic, has a grain taste kinda like cereal. Not bad, probably sat on it too long. OK, as I’m still drinking this, it’s tasting a lot better - creamy, mellow leaves a nice feel in the mouth.
4.012 oz bottle. Pours a hazy orange body. The aroma is slightly hoppy, floral, and yeasty. The taste is incredibly smooth - nothing like the aroma suggests. Notes of sweet malt, fruit, and sugar.
3.612 oz bottle from Countryside Liquors (Tampa, FL). 2007 bottle. Pours a dark golden with a thin white head. Little retention or lacing. Aroma is caramel, sweet, hoppy citrus, floral bouquet with a few notes of candy sugar, bread and yeast. Flavor is sweet and malty initially with notes of honey, ripe fruit and candy sugar that starts to turn more acidic, citrusy and slightly bitter toward finish. Medium body with a slightly sweet and slightly bitter finish. Nice ale.
3.4750ml bottle. Pours golden straw colored with lots of head and good lacing. Aroma is hoppy with some grainy notes. Taste was sweet but crisp with a mild amount of hop bitterness. Medium bodied with a nice, bubbly mouthfeel. This is a very nice and drinkable pilsner.
3.7Bottle. Pours with a large, white head, excellent lacing, and a nice yellow body. Aromas of citrus, a bit of pear, and some cereal. Lively carbonation with a creamy, slick texture. Long duration and nice bitter finish. Overall a good lager that I would much rather drink than those from AB or Miller.
