Dogfish Head Hellhound On My Ale

Dogfish Head Hellhound On My Ale

2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.

Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

4.2 2/16/15. Bomber from the brewery. Pours burnt orange with a nice sticky head. Minimal lacing. Huge citrusy hop nose. Citrus in the mouth but no hint of sour. High ABV balances the hops but still taste the strong hop backbone. Goes down with just a slight bite.
3.6 Tasted in store. Reddish/orange pour with an off-white head. Aroma is lemon. Taste is lemon and a nice malty base. Lemon in the finish. Nicely balanced beer between lemon and hops. Alc. well hidden.
4.1 Hops and citrus, definitely lemon, mostly citrus hops, completely masking the malts. Slick body, small tight head, slightly sticky. But still damn good....
3.8 750ml bottle poured a murky orange hue w/ large creamy beige head and thick lacing. Moderate sweet honey and citrus aromas. Initial flavor is moderate sweet w/ a bold bitter finish of moderate duration. Tastes are malt, orange, lemon, honey and crackers with a piney hop in the finish. Full bodied.
3.9 750 ml bottle. (Whole Foods) Washington, DC. Slightly cloudy golden colour with a small off-white head. Fresh fruity, fruit tea and pine hops, lemon, citric notes, moderate bitterness, sweetness, malt and some alcohol in the aroma. Yummy! The flavour is dry hops, birch and pine hops, lemon, quite strong bitterness, sweetish maltiness and mild yeasty notes.
4.0 75 cl bottle. Thanks rosenbergh. Pours orange color with a small head. Very nice hoppy notes on the nose, mild lemon, some pine and resinous notes too, a bit sweet. Bitter malty palate, lots and lots of lemon, resin and some sweet orange. Alcohol is very well hidden. Extremely well balanced and the lemon nuances here work very well, hop profile is top notch. Excellent. 4616
3.5 Pours golden amber with an off-white head. Aroma is grapefruit, lemon, floral, pine, and bread. Taste is broiled grapefruit, honey lemon candy, floral, herbal, bread, lemon peel, and medium bitterness. Medium-full body, nice carbonation. Bitterness and alcohol well hidden.
3.9 Huge hop nose. Lovely. Deep gold color. Malty front with fruity flavors like pear. Candylike sweetness. Tingly end. Nice.
4.3 Hops a gogo in the nose, deep orange, nice fizzy head on top. Very intense malt sweet hops taste. Fruity. Beautiful brew. Nicely balanced
4.1 Awesome beer, I love the hops with some lemon. Good call Dogfish Head! I like this
4.1 bottle. One of the best I’ve had in a while - tremendous taste and finish. Outstanding!
3.5 Aged, room temp who knows possibly a few years or more. Pours a heady lacy dark sunset orange. Aroma of dusty sandy minerally toasted malt and stange peppery hops.Strange vinous aroma. Vegetably. Ive smelt off double ipas like this so not shure if this is quite to par for its worth. I would say fuck aging this as it is. It wont do it much good. Malty with citrus sweet caramel malts peppery bittering a little toast/roast malt. Not worth buying this bottle for 13 bucks unless it was newer. Allthough its abv may be worth its weight and overall it wasn’t a terrible experience, just feel like I didn’t get the most out of its potential. You know what Im sayin. Also this beer did not appear to be in 100 ibu territory at least an aged bottle such as mine.
3.5 "A nice beer that unlike Bitches Brew, wasn’t quite worth the price. Good amount of malt and a nice hoppy citrus backbone, with the lemons not being as prominent as I figured or hoped they’d be. With 60 and 90 minute ipa already in the line-up, this was needed to stand out more. big, full feel. hid the alcohol well."
4.1 nuts, earthy, mildly floral, aroma, golden, hazy, frothy, white foam head, medium sweetness, lightly sour, medium body, lively palate
4.0 Transfer from BA review on 5-17-13- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a lightly hazed golden-orange colored brew with a one finger white head. The head persists fairly well fading over time to leave a good level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is very citrusy with lots of grapefruit and orange peel. Along with these more bitter citrus smells are notes of some light caramel sweetness as well as hints of bready malts, some candied like sugar aromas, as well as a little bit of an herbal hop smell. Taste – The taste begins slightly sweeter with caramel and a sugared orange peel taste. While it starts sweeter there is certainly a presence of some nice grapefruit and herbal hop flavors upfront. As the taste advances the sugar dries some while some malt flavors of biscuit and a bit of a bready taste come to the tongue. All the while the bitter hoppiness of the brew gets stronger with an alcohol taste working its way onto the tongue. More grapefruit and lemon hop with a nice dose of an herbal hop taste mix with the malt and caramel to in the end leave a moderately citrus, bitter, but somewhat smoother taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew was on the medium to slightly lower side in terms of thickness for a brew of 10 % abv with a carbonation level that was just above normal. The two characteristics of the brew gave it a more crisp feel and helped make very drinkable. Overall – A smoother and rather easy drinking hopped brew with nice transitions between a sweetness upfront to a nice citrus hop base mixed with a little bit of boozy flavors and a decent malt backbone in the end. Quite tasty and rather easy drinking even at 10 % abv.
3.8 Really good, nice in the glass, aromas of orange and spice, some cinnamon-spiciness up front, followed by citrus and lots of well-balanced hopping. Big and complex.
3.8 Pours clear brown-amber with a medium beige head, good retention, very fine lacing. Honey, lemon, tart cherry, and dark fruity aromas with toast, and some light floral notes. Medium body, medium carbonation, a bit alcohol hotness. Medium sweet, a little citrus tartness, lingering medium bitter finish. Complex, big beer.
3.8 The aroma is hops, citrus a little spruce and some maltiness in the background. Pours a clear copper/orange/brown, with off white head, mostly diminishing, good lacing. The taste is a medium bitter. The body is light to medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter. Very good.
3.7 Bottle. Hazy yellow orange pour with a big white head. Lemon cake, biscuit, pound cake, candy, citrus. Big sweet body with citrus tangy feel and good carbonation. A bit sweet, oily and chewy for me but well balanced. Nice
3.5 Bottle (22oz): Very hazy amber color. Solid head that sticks around. Not light, but not heavy either. Alcohol well hidden. Very nice, but not my favorite DFH. Bottle dated 9/30/13, dring 6/27/14.
3.0 Cloudy pale tan, light bubbly head. Aroma, touch of lemon and slightly gluey pale malts, hint of biscuits. Fairly thick and chewy, touch of peach and lemon. Clunky but sweet.
4.7 Chilled bottle. Pours amber, low carbonation. Taste is mahogany and cognac. Lemon is very late; this tastes almost English barley wine. Thoroughly enjoyed and wish I could have dragged out for hours.
4.0 Bottle from Jamestown S’Klallam Longhouse Market & Deli, Sequim Hazy copper color with small head. Very nice aroma, peppery and lemony, and nice grainy malts; very light vanilla. Lean mouthfeel, soft, with some alcohol perceived immediately; grainy malt flavor, light colored caramel and hints of toffee; quite strong bitterness, soft hop resins, a light fruity touch from the hops and some citrus fruit peel. Balanced and powerful, not too heavy to drink. Very nice beer.
4.5 15-MAY-2014, botlle @SpringHill Suites Newark, from Harrys Teeter, NoMa, Washington. My birthday gift (or part of it) from Marianne and the kids. Very hazy orange with lasting, lacing off-white head. Wonderful hoppy aroma with grape fruit and pine, over ripe fruit, liqour-like orange notes, alcohol. Taste the same. With even more citrus. Full body, medium carbonation, sweet but never cloying. Actually a bit dry on the long very bitter finish. Fantastic. Just what i hope for in an IIPA. Thx family:-)
4.3 This pours a hazy, dark amber color with a fluffy, beige head. The aroma is mild with a slight hint of malts and lemon mixed with some bitterness. The taste is smooth and easy drinking. The overall tone is very bready with some citrus and bitterness. Very well-balanced and smooth drinking for a 10% beer. This is a well-made brew all the way around.
3.7 Pours orange body with loads of foamy head. Aroma is lemony and earthy hops. Flavor is big time lemon hops and just the right amount if bitterness, coats your tongue over time but well balanced by the malts to stay drinkable. Medium body. Slightly warming.
3.5 BAB pours a hazy orange with a small head and little lacing. Aromas of citrus, lemons, herbs, grapefruit, and alcohol. Flavor is citrus hops and alcohol. Very unique brew. Tasty!
4.2 Poured from a bomber. Pour slowly! Makes a huge, foamy, off-white head. Orange body. Great lacing all the way down the pint!Big-bad hops with a huge taste. Just the right amount of bitterness.
4.0 Cloudy yellow amber/golden. Good head. Fruity, citrus, grapefruit. Excellent hop character. Plenty of caramel. Big beer. Lots of hops, lots of malt. Nice and fruity. Some alcohol, and then some more. Different, in a good way. Certainly unique. Not as heft in the body as the aroma and flavor would lead to believe. Strong but easy going bitterness. Smooth. Very hoppy. Spicy grassy. Cool, fun brew..
3.5 Orange and lemon peel on the nose. Appearance: thick and foamy off-white head that dissipates rather quickly. Cloudy brownish-orange body with good carb bubble display. Taste is a blast of sea salt, citrus rind, some tropical fruit and bitter grass. Palate: oily. Lots of hop oils here.
