Vast in character, luscious & complex. Brewed with peat-smoked barley, this strong ale is brewed with organic juniper berries, vanilla & maple syrup. It’s aged on oak and fermented with a blend of English & Belgian yeasts.

3.62009 Vintage on draft at Capone’s. Pours slightly opaque medium to dark brown with minimal head that hangs around the edge of the glass. Aroma is mild fruity ketone, corn sugar, booze, stove top hard candy like my grand mom made, mild ash and slight esters. Taste is similar with a moderate smoke flavor that fades quickly with a touch of oxidation. Finish is pleasant with mild tart and citrus flavors.
3.8Was not sure what to expect from this on since I have not had any barley wines. If it was a beer I would say it was a bit too boozie and flat but I think that is how it is mean to be.
4.6Bottle from Whole Foods Market Fair Lakes
Aroma: smoke, caramel, juniper, smoke, woody
Appearance: dark amber with a tan head
Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness,
Palate: medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish,
Tasty
3.5On draft at Brew and Brew. Pours murky red color with a small white head. Smells like a Manhattan, Bourbon, vermouth, and cherries.
3.1Another beer from dogfish head that offers nothing else but sweet and sticky syrup.
3.512 ounce bottle from BevMo Sacramento, aroma is dried fruit, prune, boozy mouthfeel.
3.1With Pat, Pours a hazy red color with creamy top. Aroma of vanilla, candy sugar, oak, dough, and maple syurp. Full bodied with a bunch of thick syrup. Too cloyingly sweet for me these days
3.1bottle @ Belmont Party Supply / Dayton OH --- Aroma of molasses and malt. Cloudy amber brown color, off-white head that drops to a thin cover, stripes of lace. Taste is strong alcoholic malt that has dark fruitcake fruit. It moves through medium fizz to a finish that shows alcohol growth rather than bittering. Very strong, a little too much to satisfy in more than 6oz doses. Doesn’t work for me.
3.9Bottle from Julio’s. Poured into a snifter. A deep russet amber with a very thick light tan head. Very nice looking. Sweet earthy spice aroma. Flavor is on the sweet side with earthy spice notes. Slight bit of sweet vanilla. Somewhat balanced, but still a lot of sugar on the finish.
4.012 oz bottle from Elizabeth Station. Bottled 22-Jan-2016. Pours an opaque golden copper. Aroma is smokey, sweet maple and oak notes. Taste and aftertaste are pretty similar with boozy and hoppy bitterness. Good balanced beer.
4.1I love scotch, so the peat-smoked barley was a great touch for me. The vanilla and maple syrup add nice complexity to this ale.
3.6Smoke, juniper, toffee, oaky, caramel, alcohol, herbal.
Deep amber colour, small beige head.
Big sweetness, lightly peaty, lightly bitter and lightly salty, ABV evident, lots of herbal notes.
Fullbodied, thick feel, soft carbonation, sweet and peaty finish.
A tad too sweet.
3.82015 BJCP Category: 32B Specialty Smoked Beer (base style: 17D English Barleywine)
AROMA: Peaty malt is prominent. Some dark fruit, vanilla/oak, and alcohol. 8/12
APPEARANCE: Very murky body; rather ugly shade of rusty orange/brown. Small, off white head mostly dissipates; no lacing. 1/3
FLAVOR: Takes a few sips to get used to as the palette seems to change on every swig. Seems like an English barleywine at the core with a rich sweetness of dark malt and dark fruit. Vanilla and oak chips complement each other to give it a slight candy taste. Finishes with a fairly strong peat smoke sensation. Well balanced with smoke acting as a flourish rather than the main attraction. 17/20
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; low CO2 but not viscous nor sticky. 11% ABV is well hidden imparting subtle warmth as it goes down. Remarkably clean aftertaste. 3/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: An amazing brewing accomplishment considering all that’s in this beer. Delectable, but not quite mind-blowing. 8/10
TOTAL SCORE: 38/50

3.9The beer pours a reddish color with a small head. Aroma has bourbon up front followed by some sweetness and figs. The taste has roasted plums, licorice, mild booze and some raisins. Very complex beer with a smooth finish.
3.6Aroma of maple, taste is maple, vanilla, thick beer, alcohol warming, good beer.
3.6draft that poured a brown color with white head. strong nose old ale/barley wine. strong malt backbone with hints of smoke, vanilla, oak and juniper...oh yes you can smell it. the flavor matches the aroma profile long slow sipper at 11% abv don’t be in a rush as it warms the stronger the flavors come out. for me not a true barley wine but more of an old ale. either way its good.
4.0As smooth a barley wine as I’ve encountered though the finish does have a zippy, alcohol-influenced tingle. The aroma is very thick, and with a little effort reveals vanilla and yeast with hints of smoke. The taste is evenly sweet and not too heavy. Poured from a bottle.
3.7Pours natural maple syrup brown, slight foam head. Aroma of caramel notes, toast, wood, warm & sweet. First sip sweetish on back tongue, hides alcohol content. Smooth, aftertaste is lightly sweet, almost scotchy. Good beer for after dinner.
3.2Bottle - pours brown - nose/taste of smoke, chocolate, toasted wood, maple and vanilla - medium body.
3.6Bottle. Pours a brownish amber color. Aroma and taste are sweet, floral, some booze, and caramel.
4.9Outstanding ale, hints of maple and vanilla. This brew is a treat. Highly recommend for fans of Dogfish.
3.6Pours brown / Amber with a beige head. Aroma is vanilla, maple, oak, caramel, big malt, prune. Flavor is sweet vanilla, raisin, maple, bourbon. Big body, fairly sweet and straightforward aged ale.
2.8Bottle. The pour is an amber color. The aroma is mostly malt. The taste has a complexness to it, kind of a mess. Don't get any of the flavor profile I was expecting.
3.3Copper and straw aromas.
Dark brown and clear with tan head.
Bitter sweet throughout.
Alcohol and maple flavor. Alcohol aftertaste.
3.7Bottle poured Amber with off white head. Aroma was an array of dark fruit plum dates light smoke maple. Taste oak maple plum dates black raisin maybe touch of molasses. Warming in the stomach
3.9Dark reddish brown with a thin light tan head. Belgian yeast and dark fruit aroma. Earthy, woody flavor with a slight boozy burn. Nice.
3.8On tap at the brewery. Mahogany/copper with a slight haze, one-finger head and wispy lace. Deep rich aromas of caramel with ripe fruit, wood and grass. Flavors are similar, as caramel and dark fruit sweetness is accompanied by vanilla, oak, toast and leafy hops. Alcohol is minimal. Full body, moderate carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a lingering sweetness in the finish.
4.0Bottled on 12/22/15, poured into a snifter glass. Nose is floral, burnt sugar, oak...very nice. Caramel color with slight lacing. This beer gets better as it warms. Well done.
3.412 oz bottle. Pours dark amber with thin off white head. Aroma is sweet and piney. Taste is sweet and a hint of smoke with a sweet warm malty finish. Was hoping to get more maple.
3.7Bottle. Prune, smokey caramel malt, oak, and vanilla aroma. Cloudy medium brown with small head. Moderately sweet vanilla caramel malt and moderately bitter herbal hay flavor. Wood smoke and acidic finish. Nice.
