Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron

Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron

Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay.
This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay.

Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

3.7 12 ounce bottle at home, from lizard party. Smell the wood, kind of leathery. Super deep brown in color, beige head. Taste sweet and leathery. Some malt. Alcohol well hidden. smooth for as much alcohol in this. Heavy body. Really nice beer. Cheers!
3.2 Dark brown pour with a thin brown ring of head. Aroma of soy sauce booze and very medicinal. Taste very hot and boozy. Dark fruit. Soy sauce.
3.9 From: bottle from AR Aroma: okay boozy bourbon Appearance: pours dark brown with a medium tan head Taste: boozy caramel, roasted notes, oak and vanilla, bit of toffee Palate: medium to heavy bodied and smooth Overall: really enjoyed this one. Dogfish head does it again.
4.2 Bottle. It poured the color and consistency of used oil with virtually no head. The aroma is dark stone fruits, vanilla and a roasted maltiness. It has a strong boozy note but a smooth finish. Definitely, a Imperial Brown Ale.
3.7 Flaska importerad av Jonas. Mörkbrun vätska. Doft av knäck, örter och lite vanilj. Liknande i smak. Lite portvinkänsla. Vanilj, knäck och rostad malt. Fin beska
3.5 Flaska, privatimport från USA. Svart med ljusbrunt skum. Doft och smak av choklad och vanilj.
3.9 355ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a small, creamy, long lasting, tan head that laces nicely. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, prunes, dates, alcohol, wood and a hint of smoke. Sweet, complex flavour of roasted malt, prunes, dates, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, caramel, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee and wood with a dry, warming booze finish. Full body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and complex. Excellent.
4.7 Palo Santo Marron is one of those beers that takes command of your senses right away. This beer does it with its lovely garnet coloring and it's roasty and spicy nose. The entrancing and complex qualities of palo santo wood are clear right away. They make drinking this beer a more elegant experience than you often get with something that's 12%. While this beer is intensely boozy, the herbaceous wood imparts smooth notes of vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, and toasted brown sugar. Full-bodied, malty and warm feels. It's like drinking potpourri. In a good way.
4.3 Appearance close to black, nice-sized brown head, but not much lacing. Strong and redolent aroma of wood, chocolate, brown sugar, malt, and caramel. Very nice. Flavor follows suit: lots of dark chocolate, roast, sweet but not cloying, slightly smoky. All of these powerful tastes take the edge off the alcohol burn, which is hardly noticeable by the end. This is soooo good! Reminds me a little of Founders Breakfast Stout, but maltier -- which makes sense given that it's in the brown ale/strong ale style, and not an impy stout. DFH is the master at making high alcohol beers that are shockingly smooth and drinkable while still having amazing flavor/taste; they never over-do the alcohol burn, or else disguise everything with too much sugar.
3.9 When everyone is pours brown...think nearly black. The taste is super malty and to me has a unsweetened chocolate with a coffee background. Yep, he wanna try this one and I bet it will be a fav!
4.1 Very dark brown, thin yellowish head. Aroma is roast malt, with a touch of caramel. These tastes are very apparent too, in what drinks like an imperial stout that isn’t particularly hoppy.
5.0 Don't let the "brown ale" label fool you. This is much more in the style of an imperial stout in my eyes. Pours a dark rich brown color with a thick foamy head that lingers. On the front you get a nice roasty flavor with a little vanilla sweetness and caramel. Good smooth mouth feel and a nice heat on the back end. This is at or near the top in this style for me. Excellent all around.
4.0 Poured from bottle nice dark brown with a creamy cocoa head. Aroma is roasted malts earthy grains wood alcohol. Taste is creamy roasted chocolate earthy wood hint of alcohol really nice brew.
5.0 This beer is everything I look for in a beer. Something that is wonderfully complex while still being utterly drinkable.
3.8 Pours dark, dark brown with a thick, beige head. Aroma is caramel, roast and earthiness. Taste is rich toffee and light chocolate, moving to vanilla, roast and earthy tones. Finish is roast. A tasty beer.
3.8 Btl pours an opaque and extremely dark brown color with a tight creamy tan head that lingers, leaving spots of lace on glass. Aromas of alcohol, toast, molasses, wood, dough and toffee. Tastes of earth, wood, alcohol,figs/plums, burnt brown sugar, caramel and vanilla. Full, big body, a tad under carbonated, smooth, sticky, syrupy mouthfeel and a warming alcohol and woody finish. There is nothing but big, bold complex flavors abound in this beer. Is it good ? Yes. Is it great? Maybe. Anyway it’s different , decent and drinkable! Unique!
4.2 Bottle. Dark brown color, tanned head. Aroma has some oak, some coffee, smooth raisins. Smooth and round taste, oak, plums, hint of bread. Very nice.
3.6 Bottled 1/17/17 opened 12/20/17. Pours very dark almost black with mining head. Fruity aroma, others have described as raisins. Get a little cherry flavor with some chocolate notes. Light body. Nor as boozy as I thought for 12% John L - Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
3.6 12floz bottle, no date, lost record of four-pack purchase, large stem snifter glass. Appears an opaque dark brown with brown head. The raisin aroma is found as flavor battling the molasses tide. Full, heavy, sippin' beer. Kind of a lot to take in.
355ml US-Bottle from Scottie. Thannnxxx!!! 💋
4.5 Love it. Rich and complex. High abv without being too harsh.
4.1 From Aug 2008 I got this bottle in a trade with nutbrown. Thanks Alan! A near pitch black pour with the slightest of brownish hues, I got a +1 finger head of tan foam. Excellent head retention and lots of lacing. I get a lot of wood in the nose along with some fruit. licorice, chocolate, and some caramel malt. The taste is a malt lover's dream. Malty sweetness with some roastiness..it kind of has that Milk Stout malty flavour. Yum. Plenty of chocolate and some coffee and the woodiness adds a nice dimension without being over powering, and I get some dark fruit flavour and licorice as well. Mouthfeel borders on thick, carbonation is lightish, and it finishes with a nice fruity flavour that brings just the slightest amount of tartness with it. Man, and the alcohol is *very* well hidden; sure there's *some* warming after the swallow but it's minimal for such a big beer. Bottom line: I really like this American Brown Ale as it has all sorts of good flavours going on and it's a wonderful sipper. Highly recommended!
4.4 On the enormous side of the ale spectrum. Plums, raisins, chocolate, bourbon in the aroma. Fabulously sweet taste with the oak kicking in for a smoothly dry finish--though less so on the dryness as the beverage warms. Very, very good bottle with a nicely redesigned label.
3.3 I remember a time when I didn’t even look at the alcohol content of the beers I tried. Good thing I do now.
3.5 Malty chocolate smell, superbly dark for a red. Woody taste comes on strong then slowly dissipates, after which the high alcohol content is quite apparent. Creamy with stout-like head. A serious beer, not for relaxing times.
4.0 12oz bottle at home. Dark brown/black with a small tan head, some lacing. Caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, muted hops, dark cherry fruit. Full-bodied, holds the alcohol very well. Wood comes through on the long smooth finish, really nice. Found this at a grocery store in Moncks Corner, the next one gets a cigar.
4.6 Pours jet black and opaque with a nice dark, tan, 2-finger head with an aroma of wood and malt. Tastes of malt and slightly sweet cocoa with a slightly bitter wood and booze finish with a hint of nuts. It's medium to full bodied, drinkable and thinner than expected with minimal carbonation. The long finish reminds me of a dry, wood cabernet. It's unique and warming.
4.1 From bottle in tulip. Pours dark brown with thin tan head, and woody, earthy aroma mixed with molasses and booze. Rich taste (a mix of the above) with a sweet sticky finish. Enjoyable experience.
3.9 chocolate and faint coffee aromas. pitch black in color with huge long lasting brown head. taste is of chocolate, coffee, and a faint hint of plum
3.8 Sweet, dark intense chocolate, vanilla, spices, dark chocolate. Hazy, dark brown, small, creamy, white head. Heavy sweet. More cacao, heavy sweet, rich and complex malts, soft carbonation, full bodied. Very nice ASA, bit punchy in the palate. Keg at Rattle’n’Hum Easy, Midtown.
