Dogfish Head Pangaea

Dogfish Head Pangaea

An experimental beer using one ingredient from every continent (crystallized ginger from Australia, fermantable blue rice from Asia, Belgian yeast, etc.) Pangaea is the name of the Earth's sole supercontinent before the continents split over a billion years ago.

3.7 750ml bottle thanks to jbeatty, appreciate it! Amber-gold color, decent head, looks good. Smell is odd, ginger? The taste is like a pale ale but there is definitely an odd ingredient here and I can’t help but think of ginger again but maybe its the sugar. I actually liked this more than I thought I would and drank my glass down with no problem. The price tag however would be a problem that would keep me from ever revisiting this beer but I think that is standard for DFH these days. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-24-2011 05:59:22
3.6 Bottle, shared with Bergen Beer Geek Tasting Crew and Meilby. Pours a hazy orange body with a big creamy white head. Nose is pumpkin, caramel, cinnamon, butterscotch, ginger and candy sugar. Nice and sweet. Taste is sweet ginger and peppery herbal tones, with hints of pumpkin and caramel malts. Sweet, but not unbalanced. Medium body and carbonation. A nice and unorthodox ale which could probably work well as a traditional Scandinavian Christmas beer. :-)
3.7 0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This is a deep golden one, lots of small particles and a small lacing off-white head. A bit of ginger on the aroma, but not extreme. Some cinnamon, wood, herbs, and melon zest. Softly carbonated with an oily texture. At first light sweet in flavor, caramel and malts. Some alcohol, tons of peppery spices, hint’s of sweet ginger and a little cookie dough. Liked this one 27.07.2012
3.6 Pours a hazy golden color with a medium white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, ginger, caramel. Taste is similar but sweeter than the aroma suggests. Nice medium body.
4.0 Bottle 750ml @ ClubGonzo Pours slightly hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, herbs, cinnamon and caramel. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long spicy finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.4 September 30, 2011 with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc and mabel. My 750ml bottle. Clear and refractive light amber with an average diminishing frothy off-white head. Aroma is ... Belgian; tree fruit sweet malt, quite sharply yeasty, floral - rather like some of the golden Unibroue offerings - pear, apple, yeast, light spice, light alcohol - really want to go 8/10 but 7 will do. Taste is fruit-sweet with more alcohol than on the nose - still a bit light and simple. Average-light body, slightly sticky, only mildly carbonated, with a quick fruity finish, just a bit of a boozy sting in the tail - refreshing, but a bit sweet and simple.
3.3 Great beer with a hint of ginger and sugary caramel flavors. Nice aroma of sweets and a great pour with nice effervescent head.
3.4 Deep golden with a small white head relatively clear. Aroma of malty caramel and ginger. Taste very close to aroma. Maybe with a bit more caramel, and some hints of spice.
3.2 I give Dogfish Head credit for doing something different but this one doesn't do it for me. Too much ginger.
3.7 Poured from bottle, a hazy amber orange door with a creamy white head that left a good amount of lacing. Aroma is immediately ginger and spicy, maybe clove, some yeast. Great smell. The taste is a sweet malty taste. But there is a bit that comes from the ginger. The body is medium, not too thick, but good carbonation. I think there is a bitter finish from the ginger. Overall a great drink. unique. classic Dogfish.
3.5 dark orange with two fingers of creamy white head. Nose is all ginger, little but if yeast. Medium mouthfeel, not quite as sweet as I’d expected. A certain harshness on the finish.
4.0 A - Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lace. S - Aroma is a mix of sweet lightly bready malts, with some ginger, some Belgian yeast and spices, and some grains. T - Starts off with some sweet bready malts with some ginger and a touch of citrus. Through the middle, some Belgian yeast and spices come through alongside some grains. The finish is a mix of bready caramel malts, grains, Belgian yeast, and some ginger and other spices. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate-plus carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and lightly spicy and dry finish. D - Very drinkable. The ginger is a nice addition on top of the BSPA base. And the grains give the beer a really nice smoothness.
3.3 (#55) 750ml aged and bought in Dec. 2010. Tulip glass. Appearance: Light golden straw color, hazy. Good frothy white head retention and lacing. Aroma: Sweet but some spice to it. Clove, banana, melon, grape, honey, lemon, pepper. Taste: A nice spice to it, ginger comes through. There is a orange taste, but combines with the ginger to make it slightly bitter. Some honey sweetness. Palate: Light bodied. Smooth. Some carbonation but not much. Overall: Very easy to drink, no apparent alcohol taste. Great mellow beer, happy that I bought two. However, I was expecting more levels of flavor from all the ingredients used.
3.9 750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2011. Pours cloudy golden orange color with a 1 finger off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap. Some bits of lacing on the glass. Aromas of grape, pear, ginger, apricot, clove, pepper, biscuit, honey, citrus peel, and herbal spiciness. Some nice and interesting aromas; with good balance and complexity. Taste of grape, ginger, apple, pear, clove, apricot, pepper, banana, biscuit, honey, and herbal spices. Lingering notes of apricot, pear, pepper, clove, biscuit, ginger, and herbal spices on the finish for a good bit. Great balance of flavors with good complexity; and no cloying sweetness at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. No alcohol presence noted other than a faint warming after the finish. Overall this is a really nice Belgian style ale. Very unique flavor profile with nice complexity; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.
3.5 A clear medium gold with an off-white head and lacing. The aroma has lots of Belgian yeast along with some ginger and grapefruit notes. The flavor is light, with the yeast and ginger up front, a smooth body, and yeasty, slightly sweet aftertaste.
2.6 Acquired this a while ago. Not sure when maybe 4 months ago. Poured into a delirium glass at cellar temp. A - 1-finger yellow brown head, creamy head. Dark amber appearance S - Ginger, light hops, orange peels and licorice. T - Overwhelming ginger taste. too much. Bready taste and bits of cheap candy from the dollar store M - 50/50 carbonation, heavy body. Lingering cheap candy taste that never seems to go away O - Didn’t enjoy this beer at all.
3.2 Draft at the Khyber. Muddled orange color with a tight white head. Lots of fruity ester and spicy notes. Passionfruit. Nutmeg. Orange zest. Ginger. Pineapple. Hint of some earthy truffle flavors. Pleasant, but still seems more of a collection of flavors than a smooth blend.
3.1 The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is full of bread with some ginger notes. There is also some fruit in the aroma but I can’t put my finger on exactly what fruit it is. The flavor is similar. The predominant flavor I get is ginger, but there is also some sweetness from the bread and toffee malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Pretty good, but I was hoping the beer would be more complex.
4.0 Gorgeous, dark golden ale...makes you feel fancy just looking at it. Very nice, strong ginger smell - kinda like the pickled ginger you get at a sushi bar. You taste the ginger immediately, then a slight barley maltish flavor, then Belgian yeast....and then you taste the ginger again. It really is like a world tour...you even end up right back where you started!
3.6 750 ml bottle purchased over a year ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($10.99). Pours a clear dark honey-amber hue with a full two fingers of eggshell-colored head. Aroma of ginger, honey, and sticky fruit, and cloves. Flavor has notable ginger along with honeysuckle, caramel, dry spice, and fruity esters (lemon, orange) courtesy of the Belgian yeast. The ginger is good and there’s a nice level of sweetness. Light mouthfeel with a tinge of alcohol present. Pretty good, but the price leaves a lot more to be desired. (713, 676)
3.4 Color:Orange brown Aroma:Ginger, pear, pineapple Body:Sweet and medium ginger flavors lingering of to light bitterness. Finnish:Bitter dryness Over-all/Mouth-feel:Light medium with a hint of alcohol
3.5 pours semi-dark orange, small quickly dissipating head, minor ringed retention, micro CO2, slow-moving runny lacing, slow-moving CO2 streams. Lightly malted ginger, a bit of orange. Half-sharp CO2 tingly & creamy start, candied ginger in the mid, minimal ginger burn, deep 3/10 bitterness near the end, off-dry clean finish. Notes of bitter orange peel, pink grapefruit, and honey. Medium-high complexity, medium-depth, long finish, excellent balance, great transitions, good carry. An exceptionally balanced and nuanced ginger beer.
3.7 2012.02.17 - 750ml bottle in snifter. Pours medium orange, or mild copper in color. Aroma is interesting, a bit of a Belgian smell and yes, ginger. Almost a mild fruity aroma with a spicy element. Interesting aroma that leads right into an interesting flavor. Taste matches aroma. A mild fruitiness and a ginger spice. The ginger is pretty mellow while being obvious. Mouthfeel is light, a slight carbonation, alcohol is well hidden. Nice beer.
3.4 Bottle. The pour was a medium orange brown with an average sized (1-2 finger) white fluffy head that reduced itself within a few minutes to a small amount of residue that left a little puddling and a nice foamy collar creating some great sticky sheeting of lace. The aroma was a tad funky and had a strong scent of a straw and grain malts, a flowery hop and a moldy yeast with notes of caramel, ginger, pepper, clove and a bit of dust. The taste was lightly acidic and bitter, yet good and malty with a hint of caramel and ginger early on and then became a bit bitterer and tad maltier with a hint of tea and a strong dose of spices ant the end. The flavor lasted an average time after the swallow with the taste of the spices hanging on the longest. Mouthfeel was somewhere between light and medium in body with a dry watery texture and a lively carbonation. Overall a nice bold and satisfying beer with a very good blending of all the different flavors that make up this tasty brew.
4.4 I wanted to like this beer so bad and was afraid it would be terrible. Turns out I loved it, very refreshing taste awesome concept Dogfish is the best.
3.6 750ml bottle in a lager glass. Pours cloudy amber/golden with a thick, fluffy, cream-colored head. Aroma of spicy yeast, some caramel and pale malts, ginger, and floral/citrusy hops. Flavor about the same, with the ginger, malts, yeast, and hops all blending well. Average texture. A pretty good beer.
4.7 Tried this beer at a tasting with 21 other beers. Pangaea really stood out with its ginger, which I would say is the dominant flavor in the beer. There was almost a tingling on the tongue with each sip.
3.7 Bottle at a recent BA/RB tasting... A golden/orange pour with a lacey white head. Super spiced beer and quite earthy. A lot going and nothing really stood out individually with the spicing. However it all meshed nicely and created a unique drinking beer. Acidic, peppery spiced, eatery for sure. Gingerbread-like malt tones, citrus and other light fruits.
3.5 A - pours dark apple juice color with high white head and light lacing. S - strong floral and honey notes up front. Light notes of pilsner malts and crystal ginger, hints of spices . M - medium body with slight dry feel. T - floral notes (honeysuckle) and honey on the nose. Belgian yeasts and ginger on the palate. Lingering earthy yeasts and honey. O - good drinkable imperial pilsner type drink. 7-
3.4 Bottle served in a tulip. 2009-2 bottling. Pours dark orange with a short head that rings to the glass. Aroma of heavy ginger, with tea, spice box, and indoor swimming pool. Medium sweet, dry flavor. Light body, thin yet creamy texture, and a dry, chalky, wit-like finish. Light belgian influence. Very tasty and refreshing. I’d drink this again.
