Dogfish Head Pennsylvania Tuxedo (8.5%)

Dogfish Head Pennsylvania Tuxedo (8.5%)

This entry is for the 8.5% bottle release.

Pennsylvania Tuxedo pays homage to the flannel suited hunters and gatherers who dwell deep in the back country woods of Central PA. Pennsylvania Tuxedo Brewed in collaboration with Family Run outerwear company Woolrich, our two like-minded companies came together to make a beer with Pacific Northwest hop varieties to make a concoction with a grassy citrus kick complimented by the resinous conifer qualities of fresh green Spruce Tips. We went into the forests of Northern Pennsylvania and Georgetown Delaware and picked these fresh tips ourselves.

3.5 Hazy dark gold pour with an amber core and a one finger, creamy white head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, husky grain, grass, berry, citrus and lots of sweet spruce. Flavor is big on spruce tips and juniper, and herbal hops, some grass, dark caramel, and oxidized malts. Medium body, slightly syrupy feel, medium carbonation. Pretty good, tastes a little old.
3.8 Bottle. The was a wonderful beer. I absolutely love the spruce aroma and taste.
4.2 This beer almost tastes like bourbon. It’s got a sweet caramel-like and the spruce tips with the hops really freshen it up. Super good beer.
3.8 Dark amber pour. Scattered white lace. Somewhat medicinal earthy spruce and Listerine nose. Mint and abuse. Very interesting. Same notes flow into the flavor. A tiny bit of burn as it fades. Ginger?
4.3 This is one of the best aromas I have ever experienced. I would buy a candle of this scent. Dark for an IPA with an off white head. Tastes sweet at first with a slight hop bite and a malty aftertaste. Great palate, sharp carbonation but still coats the mouth fully. I really love this beer. I bought it on a whim based on how unique it is and it greatly exceeded my expectations.
3.7 Bottle. Deep red-amber with a lasting off-white head. Lacing is fairly thick. Aroma of citrus, Fruity Pebbles, toffee, caramel and conifer. Fruity and evergreen taste. Medium bodied.
3.5 Good, but I wouldn’t want more than one of these. The spruce is really aggressive throughout. Bitterness accents the tree character. Drank a bottle in line at the Holy Name Fish Fry in 2018.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours clear dark copper with burnt orange hues. Aroma of spruce, citrus, hintnif caramel. Flavor is spruce, pine, caramel, citrus.
3.5 Bottle. It poured a copper color with an off-white head. The aroma was of hops, grass, spruce and citrus. The taste was similar to the aroma with more hops, grass, spruce, citrus and medium carbonation with a nice smooth aftertaste. Tasty.
3.4 Murky copper color with a whisp of a head. Pine, wintergreen, and orange peel aroma. Very strong spruce flavor. Approaching scented candle pungency. Light bready malt. Very bitter. A little floral.
3.6 Cork and Tap, Bellevue. Creamy foam, lightly hazed dark orange. Quite floral and foresty nose. Tons of spruce on the sip which perfumes a clean, citrusy, and sweet ipa base. Clean beer with a rush of spruce flavor. Sticky finish. Nice.
4.1 Pours clear copper, small off white head. Aroma is grapefruit forward, backed by pine and spruce, and something almost like roses. Taste is quite different from a standard IPA, more of that rosy forest taste, spruce, fir, not much citrus. Definitely has overtones of an Allegheny forest, especially in springtime.
3.3 (Draught) Pours a hazy orange body with a medium white head. Aroma of spruce, herbs, and earth. Flavor of spruce, florals, biscuit, mint, and grass.
3.6 Draught at Willie’s in Los Altos. Aroma is woozy, slight tobacco and tree sap. Pours clear copper with smallish white head. Flavor is overt spruce and pine tree. Interesting and it balances fairly well.
4.4 Pours copper-golden and translucent with a white head. Tastes of citrus hops with moderate bitterness balanced by minty spruce tips. Wow. Ve’dy int-a-lesting! Don’t let the secret out about balancing hops with fresh spruce tips. It’s medium to full bodied with moderate to lively carbonation.
3.7 Bottle share from Jason Jones (the Animator :/) at Facebook in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is herbal lozenges, mild tree sap, caramel. Taste is earthy malt, woodsy sap and then a spike of spruce that is reminiscent of menthol / eucalyptus and then bitter. Very unique and delivers on the spruce note.
3.2 Pours an orange/golden with a full rocky antique lace head. Mild sweet citrus hop aroma. Taste is sweet caramel malt, rock candy and muted citrus and pine flavors. Kind of perfumy. Very little bitterness, in spite of the hop flavors.
3.8 Draft at What’s on Tap. Amber, copper color. Fruity with big hoppy bite. Smooth and refreshing though.
3.5 Pours a light copper with a dense white head which lingers.......aroma of pine, bread, cotton candy......taste is heavy spruce, but not lysol type, the aromatic oils of the new tips. Very light cotton candy/peas-carrots chewable candy of my youth. Little else comes through. Interesting but......a bit overbearing.
4.0 I had this at Flying Saucer. Pours dark copper with a off white head. Taste caramel, pine/sweet, a hint of citrus. I thought this was good. I would drink this again.
3.9 Aroma is citrus, grapefruit and slightly perfumed spruce tips. The flavor is citrus, spruce, malts, grapefruit and a clean hop/spicy finish.
3.4 Poured from bottle dated 10/6/17 copper with a nice white tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is spruce floral hops and malt. Taste is lightly sweet lingering spruce finish.
3.9 This is a re-rate. I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. The aroma is pine, citrus, and caramel. You get a lot of pine and hops. It's balanced nicely with caramel, brown sugar, spice, and some citrus. This had a lot of flavor. The carbonation was nice. The alcohol was there. It wasn't overpowering. This was very good.
3.8 It pours clear copper with a large white head. The aroma has sweet caramel malt, citrus and pine hops, floral notes and is very clean. It has a medium crisp body with moderate carbonation. The taste has a lot of spruce and makes it very lively. The aroma notes are there, but get pushed back with spruce up front. Really tasty.
4.0 Burnt copper pour. Forever lasting white head. Aroma is grassy. Taste is sweet grassy and caramel. Enjoyable.
4.1 The aroma reminds me of caramel, malts with a hint of pine. A deep burned copper body with a modest off white head. A bold but smooth taste. Bitter with a malty base to smooth it out. It has an earthy pine spiceness. It's palate warming but not in a boozy way.
4.5 Very nice and sweet aroma to it. I loved the body on this beer, it's a good medium body, not overpowering. The notes and hopes on this are perfect with such a good blend of them. Very well balanced, nothing overpower and goes down with a smooth taste.
3.8 Excellent IIPA. Bronze color. Nice aroma of pine, bready malts. The flavor is sweet, pine, bread, citrus. Thick in body. The finish is pine needles, citrus. Nicely done.
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear amber with a nice beige head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Taste is citrus, pine (spruce), grass, and malt. Very good.
4.0 12-ounce bottle pours sparkly clear orange-amber with a trace of tan head and lacing. Aroma: caramel, unidentifiable spice or herb, citrus, northern forest. Flavor: Wow! I pick up oranges, tangerines, honey, butterscotch, spruce gum, pine needles.. Mouthfeel: full-bodied, slick. When I tasted this beer last year (didn't do a rating then), I remember it having a strong spruce flavor. The brewers seem to have scaled that ingredient back, which for me is a good thing.
