Dogfish Head Red & White

Dogfish Head Red & White

A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging.

This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

3.2 Surprised I never rated this ... I do have some older bottles in the cellar. On tap at TJs. Poured a deep amber to copper color with a smaller sized head. Fruits, spices, some wine notes, and vanilla.
2.8 Bottle in 2011, Pours copper color with small sized head. Notes of booze, sugar booze, welshes grape juice, oak, coriander and malt. Really unbalanced with way too much heat and sweetness from the excessive malting they did. Why won’t they make any clean hoppy beers?
3.5 750 ml bottle found in the cellar and I don’t know how old it is. Pours a slightly hazy reddish amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big vinous notes, grapes, a hint of orange peel, pale wheat malts, some sweetness, red wine character, floral, some oxidation notes, I guess it could have been much worse.
4.0 Pours a nice dark reddish amber color. Aromas of fruit, and some other hints, maybe some spices, maybe caramel. Flavor is a bittersweet, malty, and a hint of hops with a nice bittersweet finish. Like an Imperial Witbier.
3.7 bomber to tasting glasses poured a cloudy reddish color minimal white head. this is an old bottle so it may not truly be cloudy. wonderful nose of orange and grape with hints of coriander. the flavor held true on this one surprisingly for as old as this bottle was guessing 4-5 yrs old maybe more. but you definitely get the wit flavor the wheat the orange peel and wine. aged nicely and very good tasting.
3.7 Not too bad. I was expecting something more musty or yeasty. Can taste the slight oakiness from wine barrels. I'd have this one again.
3.6 Pours a murky deep golden color with a thick off white head. Aroma is of malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, and something a little sour. Medium body. Flavor is the same.
3.1 Light mildly sweet smell with maybe touch of sour, taste is a bit sweet some deeper flavors that are hard to place..good depth when drank slowly
3.4 750 ml bottle shared. Somewhat orange pour, decent head. Interesting aroma that’s part wheat and cereal grain and part red wine. Taste is the same mix.
3.8 Bottle shared by Duchammer at Anchorage tasting group Jun ’15: Poured a coppery with white head. Aroma is sweet fruits. Taste is sweet sticky fruit, spice/coriander, and grapes.
3.4 So so strong. Cereal nose with some orange fruit. Bitter and dry. Lots of orange oil mixed with yeasty dryness, and a really intense booze/tart finish. It’s good but a bit much for me.
4.0 From the 750 ml. bottle. Bottled on 04/17/14. So over a year of aging. Nice orange-amber pour under a fizzy off-white head. Aromas of yeast, toasted malts, light sugar, coriander, orange, and red grape. No booze to speak of. The body is medium to better than medium but decently smooth. The taste echoes the aroma with a toastiness that graduates into a mild to moderate bitterness at the finish. Quite nice.
1.7 This is the worst Dogfish head beer I’ve ever had. Tastes like cough syrup (cherry). Maybe this bar gave me the wrong beer. Don’t know why everyone else likes this.
4.0 Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Reddish brown pour with a thin head. Aromas of grape, apricot, vanilla, orange, coriander and malt. Flavors become more pronounced as it warms up. Great smooth finish.
3.5 It's really good beer. I am not sure how it is classified as a strong beer being a mix between a wine and a wit. Smells of fusel alcohol.
3.8 Bottle. Color hazy orange with white head. Aroma fruits, yeast, hoppy. Taste sweetbitter, fruits, hoppy, orange, yeast.
2.0 Bitter and sweet all at the same time. Not my palate, but I give them credit for making this.
3.5 Ambré. Belle mousse blanche. Nez: Caramel. Noix. Banane. Bouche: riche. Sucré. Fruité. Banane. Épicé. Girofle. Raisin. Noisette. Boisé. Réglisse. Abricot.
2.2 Honestly this didn't leave much of an impression on me. Wasn't bad, just not memorable at all.
4.2 1pt 9.6fl oz bottle poured into a Westmalle Trappist glass. Pale cloudy orange with thick offwhite froth. Aroma is Belgian sugar and grapes. Smelling it alone gives me the sour mouthwatering effect. The flavor is a Belgian ale with strong undercurrents of wine. The flavors blend together in a way that just works. Palate is very smooth, slightly effervescent. Short bittersweet finish. Wow, bravo Sam & co. Very nice.
4.1 Bomber - Rosey peach colored pour with white head. Nose is heavy on yeast, grapes, and light fruit. Pretty heavy on the sediment for an initial pour from a bottle chilled upright. Taste is almost like an Abbey Dubble with some grape juice. Light on the palate. Well done for something I didn’t have high hopes for.
4.7 APPEARANCE - Cloudy orange with a 3-finger head that dissipates. A little lacing. AROMA/SCENT - Sweet, piney, herbaceous. TASTE - Not too hoppy, not too sweet. ABV somewhat hidden. MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Good carbonation for such high ABV. VALUE - Reasonable. OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Pleasant, well-balanced. Quaffable.
4.3 Bottle at Akkurat, shared by friends. Pours a semi clear light amber with a rather viscous, oily appearance. Aroma is quite vinous with caramel, honey, ripe tropical fruit, orange and oak. Taste is caramel, honey, ripe tropical fruit, orange marmalade, roasted barrel notes and sweet white wine. Mouthfeel is very smooth and somewhat oily with almost no carbonation. Excellent!!
3.3 Bottle (750 ml) @ Akkurat. Shared by Ansalon, thanks! Amber/golden with a small white head and little lacing. Aroma is soapy with winey notes, a bunch of spices (including coriander), orange peel and oak. Taste is also quite soapy and malty with spices, orange peel notes, light winey presence and oak. Full bodied. Medium carbonation. Soapy finish. Tasty, but quite heavy and the spiciness doesn’t help the drinkability. A Dogfish Head kind of beer...
3.4 Bottle at Akkurat shared with friends. Hazy copper pour with thin white head. Aroma is quite winey, lots of grape, leafy notes, some cherry and a lot of spice. Taste is not as fruity, lots of wheat, grainy, still a strong winey character, some alcohol. Palate is full bodied with med carbonation, a bit heavy.
3.6 Bottle - big foamy head, hazy dark orange color, citrus and Belg yeasty spice aroma and flavor, mildly sweet malt backbone, fair yeast complexity - very good overall
4.2 In tulip glass from the bottle. Slightly hazy deep orange with a quickly disappearing off white head. The smell is Belgian yeast. Spicy, citrus, and bready. The Pinot Noir grapes add additional complexity but are well hidden. High alcohol with a typical tripel spiciness. Some clove, fresh bread, and some chocolate flavors. Less grape notes than expected. The woody oak notes from the barrel ageing add a nice earthiness. Light long lingering hippy bitterness. Great and complex beer!
4.4 Copper color. Hazy with a little alcohol taste but not overpowering. Definite wheat and citrus taste. A little grape in the finish. Overall very nice and easy drinking.
3.6 "i’m still at odds on this one. it started out just sweet with not nearly as much complexity as expected. obviously as it warmed from 45, it got better and more complex. i’m still not sure about the interplay betweeen the sweet pinot aspects and the bitter orange peel, but the aftertaste that was a little harsh at first was better by the end of the bottle. the aroma was nice right off the bat. sweet but complex...grapes, citrus, malt. nice body...maybe a little cloying. not my favorite DFH beer, but not bad. better beers for the price, though
