2.9Draft at DFH alehouse. Copper/brown with light head. Nicely balanced hops and malt. An above-average middle of the road ale. Drinkable but forgettable.
3.0On draft at the Gaithersburg brew house. Pours a clear gold with a thick white head. Mildly spicy nose. Very thin mouthfeel. Not one of DFHs most memorable brews.
2.8Tap at the Falls Church ale house. Clear golden pour with a small white head. Slick palate, fairly sweet. Not bad.
2.7It pours a nice copper with a thick white head that leaves moderate lacing. The aroma is rather bland with nothing at all really standing out. The taste is clean but fairly watery. Very un-DFH like. Dull & uninteresting. Bleh.
2.5brewpub tap. hazy amber with a small-bubbled beige head that slowly wanes to a crescent moon. Nose confuses immediately with synthetic milky desert notes, a spiced coffee or cocoa. Dry cedar emerges with warmth. Flavor is off with light bile, toast at the front with marshmallow creamy sweetness through the sugary finish. Gritty texture. A shotgun profile that misses the target. DFH.
3.1On tap at the brewpub. Pours pale amber with a fruity aroma. Overly juicy for a pale ale. Like a very fruity pilsner more than a pale ale. Not much bitterness here. Definitely made for people who don’t know what else to get/are afraid of the rest of the offerings.
3.3Yes it is a Pale Ale. Pours a amber color with decent grassy, earthy hop nose. On the matly side with a little bitterness. Good.
3.1A solid malty balanced pale ale. Nice and refreshing good aroma and classic look!
3.1Draft at the Rehoboth Beach Brewpub. Served in a standard pint glass, clear amber color with minimal white head. Aroma is grain, some hops and some grass. Taste is maltier then expected, a little sweetness. Easy drinking.
3.4Has a stale like scent, some wheat and grains. Taste is a lot of wheat and not much else, rather bland taste.
3.1Sampled at the alehouse in chantilly. Clear light amber pour with faint ring of khaki head. Maltier than I expected. But with a restrained hoppy fruitiness. Solid, but nothing crazy.
2.4It lacks the pale ale hoppy aroma and bitterness I've come to expect from a pale ale. I would call this more of an American pale ale. The plus is the head retention and overall drinkability. It is not a bad beer by any means, but it could be so much more.
2.9On tap at the Gaithersburg location. Pours a clear orange gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of grain and bread with just a hint a of backing grassiness. Flavor has a good amount of grain and grassiness with not much else. Bland.
3.7Pours a golden honey with a two finger head that sticks around, great lacing throughout. Aroma of hops upfront with malts in the back, taste follows the nose, low hop profile compared to newer pale ales. Smooth and easy to drink. This beer doesn’t have the best ratings on here but I like it, it’s a great summer lawnmower beer and great beer to introduce others to craft.
3.1Tap. Pours slightly hazy gold with thin, fizzy white head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is very muted; straw and cereal malt, citrus fruit, and grassy hops. Flavor is malt forward with supporting fruit esters and hops (light bitterness); bland finish. Light body, medium carbonation, and low warmth.
3.4Bottle. Solid smell of roast hops and some spice. Roast, pine, and spice flavor. Slightly sweet and bitter at the same time. Taste fades rather abruptly but gets more consistent as you drink it.
3.2Draft in Gaithersburg. Hazy golden color, small white head, decent lacing. Aroma of citrus, hay, white pepper. Taste starts with decent hoppy bitterness then peters out toward the finish.
3.3Bottled 11.29.11. Pours clear dark orange with a creamy 1.5-finger beige head. Moderately hoppy nose, sort of muddled, but with some citrus, spices (I swear, I detect faint cinnamon here), and bready malt. The flavor is slightly spicy grass, bitter earthy hops, and mild malt. Again, there’s a hint of spice with some sweetness. Easy-drinking; it’d be easy to put down a few of these. Pretty good. [987]
3.6Tastes light, usually Dogfish has distinct tasting beer that is smooth but this is still a good beer, above average.
2.6Reviewed from notes (2007).
A: Golden orange body with a minimal head.
S: Soft pale malts and a cloudy fruit/bitter profile that is kind of off (not skunked).
T: Follows the aroma... this is kind of murky and the flavors aren’t very discernible from each other... the malts blend into hops in a muddled way
M: A thick, cream-like mouthfeel with a bit of carbonation here and there... leaves a film in the mouth.
O: A pass.
3.3Location/Date:Bottle on November 6th, 2011.
Appearance: Pours copper.
Aroma: Aroma is of light hop.
Taste: Taste is decent bitterness, some malt, not aggressive.
Palate:Medium body, a little fizzier than expected.
Summary: There is nothing wrong with this beer and it hits the style, but it’s more a solid session beer.
3.0Pour is a golden color with a nice bubbling carbonation, and a foamy white head. Nose is of an interesting set of hop flavors. Taste is rather bland, staple of the pale ale, rather lackluster, even for a pale ale.
3.3On draft at Rattle & Hum, NYC. Not a standout from Dogfish, but decent session ale. Representative for this style.
3.5Another really good and very sessionable beer from Dogfish Head. Mellow and just enough to enjoy but not too much where you only want one or two. Just a good balance that makes this a very enjoyable beer.
3.7On Tap at the DFH brew pub. Pours amber hue with a thin white head. Caramel malt and ripe fruit aroma. Medium, smooth body. Caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops nicely balanced on the palate. Very nice pale ale.
3.9Clear, deep amber color with noticeable carbonation and thick creamy off-white head that cakes the glass. Aromatic with nuts, floral hops, light fruit, and caramel. Light bodied and tickle of carbonation. Dry and malty with just a touch of bitterness. Nicely balanced. Well done!
3.712 oz bottle from a six pack purchased at Total Wine in McLean, VA. pours a deep orange with a 1+ finger white head - which settles into a creamy quarter inch. light citrus hop nose blended with rich caramel malt flavors. medium body with layers of bread, toffee, citrus hops and light fruit. very well rounded pale ale with the malt shining alongside a more subtle bitterness. smooth finish with a crisp citrus bitterness and sweet malts.
3.12 July 2011, bottle. found this bottle in a box of stuff i had stored. It is almost 3 years old so might not be the best sample to rate. guess i’ll have to try it again for comparison. med yellow/light orange, steady bubbles, slightly cloudy, foamy white head. nose is a tart nutty malt, some roasted hints and lots of malt. med body, faintly fizzy. decent ale but i wouldn’t call it a pale ale. it tastes very malty and that is more of a lightly roasted coffee or lightly browned toast malt. had it at room temp and perhaps it would be better suited to slightly more chilled.
2.5Dissapointing pale ale. Aroma is light corn, metallic, light hops. Taste is much of the same. Maybe triple the hop bill and you might be able to disguise the macro taste.
2.5This tastes like budweiser with some random hops that barely do anything. Bad beer from such creative people. Whoops.
