3.9 2015 BJCP Category: 22A Double IPA AROMA: Sweet floral and candy aroma. Some berry and perfume. No malt or alcohol presence. 9/12 APPEARANCE: Flame orange; mostly clear. Large, eggshell, frothy head. Good retention and lacing. 3/3 FLAVOR: Surprisingly well-balanced for the style. Some sweet amber maltiness complemented by candy/berry/floral hops. Bitterness is restrained and does not feel like 90 IBUs. Some pine flavor on the finish. Alcohol is part of the palette, but not distracting. Satisfying and enjoyable. 16/20 MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; noticeable thick though soft and smooth. Carbonation is a bit low despite being bottle-conditioned. Finishes rather clean with minor resiny aftertaste. Alcohol warmth is part of the experience. 3/5 OVERALL IMPRESSION: A fine strong IPA, but not as special as it’s marketed and packaged. 8/10 TOTAL SCORE: 39/50 DISCLAIMER: The author is not a certified BJCP judge; therefore, this score sheet is not necessarily indicative of proper BJCP judging techniques and protocol. 3.9 Hazy , straw color . Big , white head . Caramel malt , honey , pine and fruits in aroma . Great balance of maltiness and bitter hops . Full body . Good , classic DIPA.
3.2 The cascade and simcoe really stand out in this hazy orange brew with almost no head. The taste is sweet full bodied up front. The aftertaste the hop flavors and bitterness come in the hops are floral and balance well between Thenbitter and the malt sweetness.
3.7 not a strong nose, straw colored translucent when poured. very malty on the nose Not a lot of after taste, actually ends a little malty.
4.1 The beer pored golden amber in color, and the body was quite clear, despite the beer being unfiltered and bottle conditioned. The head was about one finger thick. The aroma was a little subdued to my liking, as the hops were evident, in the form of grapefruit, melon, and hay, but this was not a hop assault on the nose. The taste was very tropical, full of juicy fruits, mild bitterness, and hard candy like sweetness. There was a little bit of butterscotch vibe to the malts. The body was dense, but the alcohol content felt much lower than it was. The aftertaste was mild, and lasted briefly. This was a decent tropical style DIPA, but for me a super dry West Coast style hopping goes much better with the style.
3.8 Numba 999. Bottled 03/03/16, so about 60 days old. Pours clear honey, white frothy head. Aroma is orange, caramel malt, burnt sugar, maybe just a bit old, but kinda malt heavy, could just be that DFH high gravity residual sugar I seem to find in so many of their IPAs. Dank notes (CTZ I reckon?). Flavor is nice hop bite, sugar sweetness, lots of pine, little bit of boozy burn to it, just in the back of the throat, orange, citrus. Not bad. Not their best IPA.
3.8 Bottle from beer junction. Nicely flavored. It's marketed as an IPA however at 9 percent more like a double. A bit of melon and sugar undertones. It does have a bit of corn additives on the aftertaste which I'm not sure why that is there.
2.4 Pours a warm reddish-amber from a bottle, nondescript fruit, maybe a peach or papaya. Flavor is booze, front, center, and back. Big rock candy sweetness, some bitterness toward the end. Weird IPA, okay though. Might need to sit a few months.
2.7 Bottled 03-03-16, 2016 Release. Pours golden amber. Pretty clear for unfiltered. Plus: taste fresh. Minus: Where are the hops? Lots of alcohol, for sure, but waayyy too sweet. actually cloyingly sweet. and alcohol forward. I do not understand this beers appeal. If I were to go with a 9% IPA, Stone’s enjoy by is so much better. This just adds to my perception that Dogfishhead is way overrated. not recommended for hop heads. good dessert beer, but that is about it.
3.6 Bottle from a small shop in CT. Pours out a deep golden amber with a lacy off white head. Complex earthy-floral-citrus aromas and flavors. Lots of bitterness with a sweet honey backbone. Long spicy bitter finish.
4.1 Orange pour from 22oz bottle in Dubuque. White fluffy head. Smooth creamy vanilla apricot and tropical fruit flavor. Delicious brew
4.3 Bottle. On the verge of being bright, this settles into a vaguely murky pour of orange, well topped with an airy head. The aroma is really nice, hinting at spicy orange. This drinks with a pungent spiciness up front, but really settles into a nicely fruited ale, incredibly easy to drink for 9%. Another DFH masterpiece. (#6184, 5/6/2016)
3.6 Had a bomber of this in Tallahassee with Jacob and Zach. This beer was fine but nothing special.
3.6 Pours orange-amber with a thick off white head. Aroma is mango, pineapple and citrus rind. Taste is all of the above in a mellow sweet kind of way followed by a mellow bitterness that lingers for a short bit. Aroma is better than flavor, but not bad overall.
3.4 on tap @ Hebron Brew Haus / Hebron KY --- Nearly clear medium amber color, White head, bands of lace. Taste is caramel malt and citrus earthy hops riding a wave of medium carbonation to a long sweet n bitter finish. Slight taste of bitter cardboard takes away from an otherwise solid brew.
4.0 Robe orangée. Mousse sale. Dentelle. Nez frais de houblons. Marijuana. Pêches. Ananas. Fleurs. Terre. Superbe.
4.0 Bottle purchased at the brewery. Label indicates 2016 Limited Release. Cloudy golden orange with a thick two-finger white head and very nice lace. My careless pour put significant amounts of yeast flakes in the glass. Aromas of tropical fruits, sweet biscuity malts, and earthy and pine hops. Taste is similar, as robust maltiness and tropical fruits give way to subtle pine and earthy hops. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, thick oily mouthfeel and a gentle sweetness in the finish.
3.9 Poured from 750ml bottle. Very slightly hazy, gold color with a 3-finger ivory-colored head and very good lacing. Aroma of pungent tropical fruit, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, pineapple, biscuit and sweet pale malt. Taste of pungent tropical fruit, citrus, floral hops, pineapple, biscuits, caramel and abundant complexity. Full/medium body and medium/high carbonation with a rich mouthfeel. Balanced and complex. Very nice.
4.1 Served on tap at Moor Pat. Clear red Amber color with an off white head. Tropical fruit citrus hops sweet malt aroma. Sweet citrus honey grapefruit pine hops. Lot going on with a nice balance. Heavy sticky body.
1.1 750ml bottled about a month ago. Pours shitty. Smells shitty. Tastes shitty. This is easily identified as a 10 year old IPA recipe. No.
3.9 Pine. Citrus. A hint of sweet. Cloudy dark honey gold with a thick foamy white head. Thick Velvety mouthfeel. Very smooth. Orange. Grapefruit. There's a fruit in there that I can't place. The bitterness on the finish is mild but just there. Nice warmth at the end. Very well balanced. Very good.
3.7 Poured from a bomber bottle. Pours a deep orange amber with a massive white head. Light carbonation and lots of lacing. Aroma of pine resin, sweet citrus, and corn syrup. Light syrupy texture. Taste is juicy and slightly bitter. Flavors are not very bold. Not too harsh. Finishes with a nice warmth. Reminds me of Lagunitas Bitter Oats but not quite as good.
3.8 bottle. very impressive and tasty imperial ipa. a very good beer that does the style proud
3.9 Taster... Golden yellow with white head. Nice balance of pine and tropical fruit on the nose and palate. Dry bitter finish... Very good!!!
3.6 Juicy pineapple and mango aromas, papaya too. Pine and alcohol aromas take over after the beer has warmed. Taste is mango, pineapple, biscuits, and alcohol. After the beer has warmed the flavor shifts to pine needles, peaches, and alcohol.
3.7 Draft to pint from Cappy’s pours light gold with thin white head. Nose light dank hop, pine, and some sweet malt. Taste moderate bitter bite up front, grapefruit, then some grainy malt mid palate. Light tropical fruit late. Mixed malty and dank hop finish.
3.6 Draft at Moriartys. Hazy dark yellow gold with some off-white foam. Few splashes of lace. Complex (but balanced) mix of caramel malts, amber fruit, dark citrus and drying spice. Notes of mandarin. Pineapple. Apricot pits. Autumn leaves. Fresh oak. Green banana peel numbness in the finish. Medium body. Nicely done.
3.5 Pours a dense yellow, lots of carbonation, and an extreme amount of foamy head. The aroma is very bitter, musty and dry. Notes of boiled cabbage, pine, just generally funky, bitter hoppiness. The flavor is aggressive. Extremely bitter, with some of the ABV detectable in the nose on the finish. This was good.
3.0 Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle poured into a snifter. Hazy light orange with small white head. Aroma is herbal hops, medium body, lower carbonation, and a little lacing. Taste is herbal hops.
3.9 Bottle (750ml $9 Costco 2016). Cloudy. Golden with white head. First sip was al little weird. I tasted some spice, but not after that. Somewhat sweet, quite fruity. Slight alcohol burn in the end. Nice
