Dogfish Head Ta Henket

Dogfish Head Ta Henket

Working with our archeologist friend Dr. Pat McGovern, this beer was created to incorporate the ancient ingredients and techniques described in Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was brewed to 11.4Plato with Emmer (an ancient form of wheat) and loaves of hearth baked bread and flavored with dom-palm fruit, chamomile, and zatar. Fermentation was carried out by a native Egyptian saccharomyces yeast strain captured by Sam and Floris during a recent trip to Egypt. ABV went from 5 to 4.5%.

4.0 750ml bottle into a shaker glass; served cool. Aroma: There’s an odd, almost coffee aroma up front. It’s either coffee or well-toasted bread. Appearance: Bright gold/copper body. Quickly dissipating head. Taste: Pretty malty at first. But there is a splendid herbal flavor that is reminiscent of oregano and balsamic vinaigrette. Pretty tasty!! Palate: Medium body; with a moderate-long herbal finish. Overall: Excellent stuff! I just can’t get enough of that herbal taste. I will definitely be having this pleanty more times in the future. Outstanding!
3.1 Bottle to pint glass Aroma of wheat, toast, lemon, flowers, and sweat. Translucent amber with loads of dark sediment and a somewhat creamy and bubbly white head with a dark brown patch. The taste is a touch sour with grain and cereal and nutmeg and horse blanket. I would have preferred more body as this is quite thin and light.
3.5 Bottle from Wine warehouse for $12.99 - pours straw, with some nice bubbles. Bready with a nice light fruity taste. Nice!
3.5 A: Lightly Hazy Golden Straw, Mild White Head, Mild Lacing S: Wheat, Bready, Light Citrus, Floral T: Wheat, Corn, Bread M: Well Carbonated, Light Bodied, Dry, Clean Overall, an interesting Wheat Pale Ale that was very drinkable but a little pricey for 14.99.
3.4 Pours a clear golden color with one finger head that leaves moderate lacing. Aroma of toasted malt, yeast, pepper, spice, chamomile. Hint of herbal hop with moderate carbonation, medium to full body. Not sweet, mildly bitter, a mildly sour perhaps a little salty. Medium finish. This is enjoyable and drinkable.
3.1 Tastes a bit like a craft store smells. Prominent pepper nose and frontal taste. Tastes of spices (again... craft store). A slight corn undertone. Decent head on pour, a dark yellow color.
3.4 Bottle. Pours clear golden with av an off white head . Aroma of spices, yeast, cinnamon, some malt and fruitiness. Flavor is sweet add and spiced with soon be cinnamon , apple, some floral notes and fruitiness. Medium body, average carbonation.
2.7 Bottle, 75cl. An almost clear one, golden in color and with a white head. Spiced aroma with some cellar notes and dried fruits. Berry hints, Medium to full body, very soft on the palate. Some tea hints. The flavor has pale malt notes, dried fruits and tea. Herbs. Well, it’s interesting, that’s for sure, but it’s definitely not my kind of beer, sort of blending good and bad beer. 130804
3.3 Bottle 750ml @ Hotel Room, Hotel Whitcomb, San Francisco, CA Pours clear golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, tea, chamomile, cinnamon, floral and spices. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with a floral and spicey tea finish. Body is light to medium, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.
4.0 Dark clear orange pour some head. Aroma of dough, sesame, grapes, date sugar. Tastes very wheaty, cinnamon raisin bread. Bold flavors that I’d usually expect to find in a dubbel or quad are present, but lightly applied in this very refined brew. Palate is full and smooth and quickly recedes like oatmeal, but the effervescence and regular abv make it quite refreshing. Aftertaste of honey, date sugar, and savory spice. Underrated.
3.2 Aroma, honey, and fruit in the aroma. Flavor is sweet with fruit and cinnamon, with more of the same in the finish. Interesting concept, but really nothing special.
3.1 Pours hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is earthy and lots of chamomile. Taste is spicy with some sweet undertones, very interesting as it is almost tangy. Light bodied with a slick texture. Interesting, very strong on the chamomile.
3.3 25.8 oz bottle - pours goldish-orange with diminishing medium white head. Strong sweet fruit aromas on the nose, plums, apricots, and bready yeasty notes. Little bit of clove. Sweet malt. Medium-full bodied. Definitely strangish. Not a returner.
4.4 Was super excited to find this beer in the summer of 2012 while on vacation in Virginia. Split the 750ml bottle with friends. Very different brew, but that’s what the boys at DFH do.
2.9 750ml bottle pours a clear gold with small white head. Wheat aroma. A bit of a fruit and wheat taste.
2.2 Sample at craft.. Not my thing at all. Pours yellow with a small white head that quickly dissipates. The aroma has some honey notes but not much action. The taste is really light with no discernable direction. A really boring brew.
3.1 Tasted on 5/11/13 from a capped 750mL bottle. Pours clear copper orange with a very thick, fizzy white head that recedes quickly to thin lace. It almost looks like a sparkling wine with tiny bubbles continuing to quickly rush to the top. The nose is nutty and interesting, with some toasted hazelnut, almond, honey, and just a touch of green bitterness. The flavor is a touch sweeter than expected with the honey and varied nuttiness, but no real perceivable bitterness. The body is light with almost sparkling carbonation and a medium nutty almond finish.
3.2 Exótica e aromática ! Todos tem que provar, rs! Tem Zatar e Camomila e uma receita !
2.9 pours clear gold with a huge white head. aroma is like dusty feet with pepper and flowers. flavor has light coffee and old nasty fig...hint of metal. mouthfeel is light/medium and silky with a flowery/metal finish.
3.7 Yellow with a white head. Aroma is floral, citrus and wheat. Flavor is cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, bread, flowers and chamomile. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
2.7 Clear golden coloured body with a copper and orange glow and a very thin head. Aroma of alcohol, honey, chamomile, flowers, light spices and a hint of lemons - not much z’atar in the nose at all. Light-bodied; Assertive effervescence with a little fruit flavour at first, some very light malt and a tiny sweetness - not much grassiness or spices at all. Aftertaste is showing mostly the light malt, sweetness and a hint of alcohol - the rest of the complexity is lost. Overall, an interesting beer for sure, and thanks DogFish for trying a ’different’ beer, but this one is executed very poorly. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Fairfax, Virginia yesterday on 20-April-2013 for US$8.99 and sampled at home in Washington on 21-April-2013.
2.6 A sour and fruity flavor with a watery aftertaste. Amber in color with a white head.
1.8 Draft @ The Pressroom Portsmouth, NH. Pint showed me a nearly clear gold color n o head with low carbonation. I have no idea what zatar and dom-palm fruit is. I had to look up Zatar which is actually spelled Za’atar and is a Middle Eastern Spice mix. Nose is light chamomile essence and a very strange funk. Taste is funky wheat, honey, chamomile and that odd Za’atar. Very herbal after taste. It did remind me of a few food items I had while being deployed to the Middle East and honestly that’s not a good thing. The herbs and flat carbonation turn me off a lot. I normally can finish any beer I order, except this one. I left half of it at the bar. I thought it was horrible.
2.7 Aromas of caramel, nuts, wheat bread, subtle orange peel, subtle smoke, and a hint of metal. Orange-gold with a fairly retaining, khaki head. Slightly sweet with spicy, nutmeg and cinnamon-like flavors, and some graham cracker tones. Light body, very low carbonation, and with an earthy, sweet, spicy finish.
2.2 Metallic wheaty corn smell. Foamy head golden light orange hue. Light burnt malty taste with a lemon finish. Smooth but kinda flat on the palate. Eh.
2.9 750ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden color with a minimal amount of white head that fades fast. Aroma of chamomile, some wheat, and a little bit of lemony citrus. Flavor is light citrus, with some chamomile notes.
3.4 Pours hazy, old-gold. Aroma is sweetly fruited, malt. Flavour is sweetly grained, lightly spiced and sweet. Very interesting stuff.
3.4 Sampled at Beverage World on tap. Clear golden color with a finger size head. Aroma was earthy, grains, nuts, bread. Taste is similar: earthy, wheat. Different. Not as strong in taste as other DFH. But this was worth the experiment.
3.4 Bottle. Sweet date, spice, and malt aroma. Hazy honey gold with a small white head. Sweet date, bready malt, spice, and light chamomile flavor. Medium body, flat carbonation. Quite nice, and easy to drink.
3.5 Bottle. Pepper, date, and rye-like malt aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Chamomile, mild pepper, date, and light malt flavor. Medium body. Very pleasant. History is so much better when you can experience it with multiple senses.
