Dogfish Head Tweason'Ale

Dogfish Head Tweason'Ale

Tweason’ale is a beer we brewed on the cusp of summer. It is a gluten-free sorghum based beer brewed with fresh strawberries from our friends at Fifer Orchards near Dover, Delaware. For the sorghum, we sourced a dark, sweet, syrup with notes of molasses and pit-fruit. We also used a a dark buckwheat honey with a beautiful hay-like, earthy-malty thing that we felt added the final touch to this Tweason’ale recipe.

2.2 Cloudy orange amber with one finger of quickly failing off white head. Nose shows cereal grains and cooked oatmeal with light strawberry. Raw honey with an earthy note on the back end. Flavor’s not my thing. Weird earthy notes from the sorghum and the strawberry/honey combo isn’t doing it any favors. Medium light bodied with a crisp carbonation and touch of alcohol.
3.1 From a 12oz bottle. Looks great, including a very durable bone colored head. Smells promising but the somewhat weird flavor doesn’t follow, especially in the finish and aftertaste. Still, this is a flavorful and interesting gluten free ale.
2.3 Bottle from Chevy Chase Supermarket. Golden body with slight head. Nose is strawberries, sweet. Taste is fruity, floral, malts. Sweet, syrupy texture. Okay. Not great.
3.5 Bottle from Whole Foods Market in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is turned strawberries, yeast/mold, some wood, maybe dried apricots. Taste is hay, flowers, some earthy dryness, a little honey/malt too, but unfortunately very little strawberry. High carbonation. Reminded me of a cider or mead and if you go in with that expectation, I think you’ll be alright.
2.3 Smells delightful. Tastes not so great. From bottle. Tastes flat. Not like beer.
3.9 Big strawberry jam aroma with the honey too. Taste is cantaloupe initially followed by the grain and ending with strawberry.
3.5 Bottle@freedom of the SEA. Three finger head. Spicy herbal. Buckwheat honey yes that rules this brew. Dry. Fine complex. I will come back. 3.7
2.3 I lile the pretty orange color this beer has. The aroma is unusual. Grape, bubblegum and dough. Smells like wine and candy. Taste resembles that of red sparkling wines to me. I actually think its quite good, except for some bittering taste that lingers. I like the sweeetness with a taste of grapes, though a sourness and the bitterness dominates. All in all the taste is not balanced and that impression stays on. Medium to high carbonation. I love that Dogfish does beers like this, in this case a style of beer original to the continent of Africa to my knowledge, but in regard to the taste, this leaves less of a good image than other great beers they have made.
3.5 I’ll say "pah!" to all the naysayers and although I can see some glaring faults, this is a fun beer experience. Orange, golden color, clear. Caramel, wood, vinyl and alcohol on the nose. Intriguing flavors with a funky honey, floral note and fruits that doesn’t unequivocally shout "strawberry". I find the sweetness to be reasonably restrained. Alcohol remains noticeable. Worth trying. Bottle.
2.2 Pours light Amber with almost no head. Too sweet for my palate. Tastes like a cider. Smells and tastes yeast. You can give it a pass!
3.6 Bottle. Pours golden with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, some floral notes, spices, some mint and fruitiness. Flavor is sweet and malty with some floral notes, yeast, spices, mint and grains. Medium body, average carbonation.
2.6 Bottle 355ml @ Geokkjer Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, honey, floral and some fruitiness. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
1.7 Bottle. An almost clear one, golden-orange in color and with a small, off-white head. The aroma is lightly reminiscent of tapestrly glue. Fruityness. Forestish notes in the flavor, fruityness, glue and birch. Medium body, soft carbonation. Lasting finish. Some faint notes of strawberries in the finish. Not much pleasant this one, the strawberries fail to show off and I guess it’s the sorghum that does bad to the flavor and aroma. 150513
2.8 Orangeröd vätska med avslaget skum. Doftar färska hallon. Lite citrussyrlig smak som stretar mot en lätt sötma. Inte särskilt god.
3.0 Pours hazy apricot low head Aromas of strawberries, dish water Taste has strawberries, artificial fruits. Strange...
3.2 Pours cloudy peach with low white head. Aroma of butt plug latex and raspberries. Taste is slightly tart sour with sweetish finish. Body is light and smooth with soft carbonation.
2.8 Bottle, shared at the table at Radio Maria (Ordered by our celiac friend Rachel). In my experience, strawberry makes for a poor fruit choice in beers as it lacks any tartness and tends to come off as too sweet. This is no exception. Add to this the buckwheat honey and it’s definitely too sweet for me.
3.2 Pretty good beer, and good for you. The fruit flavor is actually very pleasant.
3.2 4 oz pour from refrigerated bottle into stemmed tulip glass. Nose of strawberry. A little opaque, amber, and lots of carbonation. Taste of strong strawberry. A little grassiness. Sogrum adds an interesting dimension. A little strange. Fairly dry. Campaign-like, in a way. Honey sweetness.
2.5 bottle from kihoskh. You can do two bad things to a beer. alcohol free and gluten free. the latter is by far the worst thing taste wise, imo. So let’s see how Dogfish Head have decided to go about this. It’s not easy.. clear dark yellow, amber hue, small white head. Aroma of honey and strawberries, and some wild notes, aroma could pass for a mead, or even a weird cider. At least it’s interesting. Flavor is herbal, sourish, wild yeasty notes, strawberries. Tastes like *something* was fermented, but not like beer. closest beer relative flavor wise would be some kind of wild ale. The dry herbal bitterness never go sour (which might become interesting) but just stays this wild yeasty herbal kind of flavor. Like a pretty messed up saison.
2.4 light sweet sour summer aroma, amber, hazy, white foam, light sweetness, lightly sour, light body, oily feel, long special finish.
2.4 Light amber coloured and clear. Has a white head, medium duraton. Aoma is sweet, herbal, notes of plastic.
1.3 Bottle: Golden-amber body with great clarity & a soapy white head that settles quickly to a ring. Fake strawberry candy aroma. Very sweet, loaded with candied strawberry, honey, & a strange plasticy off-tone. Flavor is gross. Overly sweet strawberry & honey candy-like flavors, plastic, metal, & just a strange astringent finish. Chalky & a bit medicinal, too. Just an awful beer to force down.
3.2 Strawberry aroma with hints of honey. Appearance has a light strawberry tint with a small white head. Flavor has strawberry notes upfront and honey notes in the back. Mouthfeel is light with medium carbonation. Overall, not bad for a gluten free beer.
3.1 Light pinkish yellow pour. White head. Aromas of strawberries and honey. Taste is sweet and crisp but light. Effervescent carbonation.
3.9 Awesome beer. An interesting hint of both strawberrys and honey in a flavorful and good blend of masterful brew.
2.7 Look: pours a clear orange color. White head. Smell: strawberries. Honey. Flowers. Ginger. Taste: strawberries. Ginger. Honey. Feel: very dry. Thin mouth feel. Kind of oily. Overall: ok beer. Strange combination of flavors. First drank: home 1/15/15 Vintage: 2014
3.7 Pours a fairly clear copper with some sediment and a thin white ring of head. Aroma is perfumy, sorghum(but not attacking like a lot of gluten free beers), mild fruity notes, and mild honey. Flavour is fruity, strawberries, sorghum, honey and moderately tart. Well rounded, smooth, refreshing and the girlfriend(celiac) approves! If only this was accessible here...
3.2 Pours a clear orangish auburn with a small white foamy head that dissipates quickly to nothing. Aroma of sweet honey, strawberry syrup and hay. Aroma makes you think this beer is going to be sickly sweet but the flavor is a natural strawberry, light sweet notes of honey with some dark dried fruit flavors from the sorghum and a light sourness to round it out...balance is really delicate and almost borders on being a bit watery but never cloying. Overall this is the best gluten free beer I’ve tried and borders on drinking like a light mead.
2.1 Sweet strawberry smell, taste is medicinal and artificial although it probably isn’t, bad, watery finish...love the brewery but not this beer :(
