Dogwood Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Dogwood Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure

From Crawford Moran, Owner/Brewer, Dogwood Brewing:

"We brewed the first ’trial’ batch late one night to support the GWCB (Georgians for World Class Beer) fund raiser. Mark (Nelson) and Ted (Hull) are two guys that worked very hard to get the (GA’s) 6% cap lifted. So we dubbed it Mark and Ted’s Excellent Adventure."

An experiment you may enjoy.

3.8 22 oz. bottle shared by xmarcnolanx- thanks again, Marc! The original label was gone or was never there in the first place, and it was marker handwritten onto a piece of masking tape. Marc thought it was about 7 years old. Sure didn’t seem like it, as minimal oxidation had set in. Notes of honey, brown sugar, cherries, fruity nectar, and booze. I had no idea what the ABV was, but 10% seems about right. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Glad I got to try this now long-retired beer.
3.9 Smells a little dusty, with sweet toffee notes. Surprising amount of mildly citrusy hops appear on the finish considering the age of it. This has a butterscotch and brown sugar malt body to it, mild fig/date notes and vanilla. A good, smooth classic barleywine. Has a little heat on the finish. Glad to have had the experience of trying this.
3.7 A fleeting tan head that slips into a murky medium brown body. Mellow dark fruit and caramel - vanilla aroma. Complex flavor that is slightly sweet with mellowed hops. Sad that Dogwood had to fold just when it was starting to really brew some interesting beers.
3.9 Hazy amber in hue. An extremely vigorous pour yields a thin, tan head that quickly falls to a minimal ring. Nice caramel malts on the nose, and the hops have mellowed to a sweetened citrus zest. Flavor follows suit, and there is just enough soft carbonation left to keep it lively. Mouthfeel is slick and oily, with the caramel giving way to a ’candied grapefruit’ hop finish. Good barely wine that has held up well and mellowed nicely over the years. In a way, this reminds me of Terrapin’s Big Hoppy Monster (sans the weird vegetal essence that I got from that one). I am really excited to have been fortunate enough to try this one. What a great treat. Thanks, Jay!
3.9 Pours hazy amber with little head, from 2007 bottle unlabeled. Aroma is thick malt with a bit of hops, taste is citrusy up front with thick malt caramel that finishes sweet with a bit of bitter. Very good barley wine!
3.6 Pours amber with a white head. Aroma of citrus and booze. Heavy caramel malt with some citrus.
4.2 sample at Ale Atlanta 6/4... deep hazy orange pour. for being ~5 yrs old, the hop profile has held up well. really nice blend of hops and sweet malts. nice balanced finish with a touch of aged malt. caramel and dark fruit on the nose. solid. glad I got some of this one...
3.8 Bottle No lable Pours out a nice bright amber topped with a san head. Aroma of sweetness plenty of pit fruit and caramel. Tast was more of the same sweetness brown sugar, caramell the pit fruit. A big thanks to footbalm for this one. I never would have be able to try it. Thanks man!!!
3.9 Bottle courtesy of footbalm! from who knows when?....pours ruddy amber with a small off white head...aroma is sweet, sticky malt, dark fruit and caramel...flavour follows closely, with an almost charred molassas like richness...very nicely balanced with a hint of alcohol...Thanks a lot Eric!
4.0 22oz unlabeled bottle. Pours ruby amber, capped with a medium sized tan head that fades fairly quickly. Aroma exhibits a lot of toffee and fruit, with some burnt caramel and spice present as well; reminiscent of fruitcake. Flavor is caramel, alcohol, vanilla, brown sugar, and mild spice. Finish is primarily caramel malt, with mild hops and dark fruit adding balance. Age has been good to this.
3.7 22oz. bottle, unknown vintage. Aroma of sweet malts and dried fruits, with notes of brown sugar, raisin, spice cake and bubblegum esters. Hazy deep garnet color with fine lacing and a slight head. Flavor shows a high degree of sweetness, plenty of dark sugars throughout, along with lighter hints of carob, fig, candied cherry, madeira and anise. Very light bitterness and earthy hop tones on the finish. Alcohol presence is nearly undetectable. Smooth, thick, sticky and almost syrupy texture, effervescence is minimized but still present, body is quite full. Good for a cold, snowy night such as tonight. Cheers to boboski, wherever he may be.
4.1 Amber pour with no head and obviously low carbonation. Lots of toffee and caramel notes on the nose, somewhat oxidized fruits and some bready notes too. Nice sweet malty body, caramel, toffee, a touch nutty, some fruits, and aged bitterness that rounds it out. Mostly a sweet malty bw, but the age has rounded it out so pleasantly. Notes say "love it!"
3.9 Bomber that’s been in the cellar for a while. Poured translucent, fiery orange with a fine cap of beige head. The aroma was on the sweet and aged side with caramel, toffee, and redder fruits present.. there was a resonant warmth that worked well for it. The flavor was caramel-based with mild oxidation.. prunes and raisins join across the middle.. bitterness that used to be on the edges was replaced with prickly alcohol and a touch of brown sugar.. tasty! Medium-bodied and somewhat syrupy on the palate with low carbonation.. spicy and warm.. moved well across the palate. This is still doing aiight!
3.8 22 oz. bottle courtesy of cletus. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small off white head and showing a slight amount of carbonation. The aroma still has a nice caramel malt base with dark fruits (plums, prunes) and a very slight hop presence. Oxidation is present, but this is holding up well. The flavor is moderately sweet caramel malt, dark fruits, surprising hop bitterness in the finish. The 10% is never a factor. Sticky and medium-full bodied.
3.5 Taster – 2008 Great Salt Lake Festivus – Beer Session – Wow this was a pretty darn good barley wine. Had lots of good malts and flavors high in alcohol this beer lasted and was still pretty tasty.
3.5 Bomber with no label thanks to Eric, drank at his holiday party. Pours a cloudy brown color with a nice light brown head. The aroma is sweet caramel, sugars, some nutty notes. The taste is very smooth and nice, sweet toffee, sugars, some light hops, buttery and sweet. A nice style, I am sorry this brewery is gone. I am glad I got to try this.
4.1 10/22/2008: Dogwood Excellent Adventure has a fruity malt aroma that exhibits apple and prune as well as some decomposing hops. There is also a bit of oxidation setting in for sure at this point. The appearance is a hazy, golden caramel color. It still has a decent level of carbontation, although the thin, off-white crown disappears. The flavor is sweet for a brief moment and then becomes hoppy with a nice presence of caramelly malt. There is still some hop flavor and bitterness there. It isn’t huge, but it is still drinking good (in my opinion) and is quite well-balanced. The alcohol makes an appearance as it warms, but it still kept in check my the maltiness. This beer has a medium body and goes down very easily for the style, alcohol content, and maltiness. I’m not quite sure how old the beer is at this point, but it is still drinking pretty well... 22 fl. oz. unlabeled bottle shared by alexesdad06 at the weekly Party Source gathering. Thanks a lot Brad! 7/3/8/4/15=3.7; /Rating #193 for this beer... 11/14/2014: This is my last bottle and I’m sharing with Brian... boy, this sucker has held on well and is drinking really well after 11 years! It pours out a beautiful ruby-amber color and is clean and clear with still an adequate level of carbonation. The aroma exhibits cooked caramel with some dried fruit. The flavor is rich without being sweet, think, or sticky. Caramel, cooked dates, dried fruit and raisin, light tobacco, and a touch of leather. Slightly scorched caramel in the finish that carries over into the delightful aftertaste. The alcohol is extremely well-hidden. I really like that this beer packs flavor and a punch without being thick or heavy. Super good and unique. Even better now from what I remember it. What a treat if you can find a bottle that has been properly cellared. Rating: 8/4/8/4/17=4.1
3.7 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured hazy copper color with medium frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Complex dark fruity and roasted caramel aroma. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet dark fruit finish of moderate duration. Medium body with a sticky texture. Good rich brew.
2.8 Bottle shared, I believe, by iowaherkeye. Poured a clear medium orange color with a yellow-ish head. Lots of smells; toffee, steeping barley, fig, alcohol, and even tobacco. Sweet and not as flavorful as it was aromatic. I tasted husky grain, corn sugar, and some toffee. So so.
3.9 Zeeland 08’ tasting. Last beer of the night. I have been holding on to this one for awhile now. Kind of afraid to actually try it, because I thought it would be a let down. Aroma was really nice tangerines, caramel and a slight bitterness. Taste much the same, sort of hit and then slowly trailed off. Still well balanced after all these years (how old is this stuff? Goldtwins?) Not as syrupy sweet as I was dreading. Well, the name fits, because zeeland 08’ tasting was a very excellent adventure, one that I hope to take again. Thanks to the Zeeland crew, and to Bills parents, who are some of the kindest people I have met. Cheers!
3.7 thanks to bitbucket tasting. Floral hops mixed w/ big surary malt. Caramel and dark fruits. A touch of peat/smoke. Light carbonation and no head left. Very solid.
4.3 22 oz. bottle @ liquid sunshine tasting - thanks to after4ever for this gem; cloudy amber with no head; dark and rich; big nose of musky alcohol, caramel, sugar; almost wine-like; tiem has given this a creamy, thick body; flat and rich; wow, one of my favs of the night for sure
4.3 Never thought I’d get a chance to try this so I was excited when it showed up at a tasting last week. Aroma is rockin on this and I can smell it from across the table. More on the fruity side of smells with some plum and cherry. Slight sweetness. Really smooth overall but the finish is slighlty bitter and metallic hops. Deep amber color. Full bodied and fruity plum and raisin flavors.
3.4 RBSG 2008. Pours mahogany with a small tan head. Sweet caramel and soft milk chocolate up front. This bottle carries a touch of oxidation giving a lighter body, starting downhill for sure.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a cloudy ruby color with a decent tan colored head. Aroma is sweet caramel malts, light cherry, nutty. Flavor is wet cardboard, light cherry notes, sweet caramel, maple, alcohol. Palate is full bodied, medium to mild carbonation, finished sweet. A little oxideized, but overall fairly good.
3.9 RBSG ’08. Sampled from an unlabeled bottle at the Pizza Port Grand Tasting. Clear amber color with no head and low carbonation. Lots of caramel notes in the aroma. Flavor is sweet with cherry and toffee tones. A bit of wet cardboard and oxidation in the finish. Didn’t find out how old this was. Hot finish and a bit stingy on the palate. Medium drinkability.
2.3 In short: A past due-date maderized extra-sweet and fruity beer of some kind. How: Bottle 22oz. Vintage, age unkown, too old. Sample at Cathschlag birthday party tasting. The look: Cloudy light-brown body with almost no head In long: Nose of big caramel. Extra-thick syrupy body, tropical fruits in thick caramel. Alcohol bite. A little cardboard. No hops bite to speak of. I could feel that this beer once was something but this bottle had a maderization impression (with Sherry notes and all) that was rather annoying, almost sickening. Dogwood Forgettable Incident.
4.2 Bottle at RBSG. Pours amber with a beige head. Sugary malt nose. This has cellared very well, as this has a nice maple, caramel flavor with the right balance of sweetness and mellowed bitterness. Not too hot either.
3.5 Sweet. Mellowed hops, like it has been aged. Some caramel. In the line of Full Sail barleywine. A good combination of the hops and sweet malt with dark fruit.
3.9 Hand-bottled bomber, thanks after4ever. Pours hazy orange with a lacy beige head. Caramel, nut fig taste. Full body and light carbonation. Dry woody finish.
