Dominion Pale Ale

Dominion Pale Ale

This rich, red ale is made in the American Pale Ale style. It has a strong hop character, medium body, dry finish, and floral hop aroma. We use pale Two-Row Brewer’s malt, Caramel 80 and 40 Lovibond malt, and Munich malt. For bittering and aroma Willamette, Cascade, and Tettnang hops are used in the kettle and as dry hopping in the fermenter.

4.0 On tap at "brewhouse" in Dulles airport. Really nice floral aromas and slightly toasted malts here, good to smell. Full mouth flavor here with differing levels and a certain amount of complexity. Buttery fruited notes are balanced nicely by a sturdy piney hops presence and a buoyant floral touch. Easy to drink and very quenching. Very good. Went great with a nice spicy chili.
3.4 Tap at Dullas airport. Clear amber-red with small white head and splotchy lacing. Nice sprucey hops in aroma. Nice crispness. Finishes clean. Is herbal, dry, and piney with a nice malt backbone. Balanced and drinkable.
3.3 At tap at IAD. Amber colour with a slight brown accent. Woody, cascadey aroma with tropical fruit accents. Woody taste with some sweetish malts. Strongly reminiscent of SNPA. Slightly sticky finish.
2.0 Draft. Pours a clear dark copper. Small off white head. Slight aroma of floral hops. Flavor is a bitter hop attack! After taste is dry and bitter. Not really picking up anything else. Low carbonation..
3.3 Draft. Luckily they had this on tap at a restaurant we visited while in Virginia. The other choices were unthinkable so went with these and to my surprise they were pretty good.
3.5 Draft. Pours copper with nose of hopcitrus, lemongrassy, caramel malt, with a medium palate and flavor of pretty heavy hops, a bit of fruit, and a solid malt bill. Very good, very hoppy, very crisp, and very assertive. Well done.
3.6 On draft at Capones. Pours a clear coppery amber with a medium white head. Aroma of citrusy hops, grassy notes and a hint of pine. Taste of light tangy citrus, grassy notes and bread dough.
3.5 Bottle, #466. Light copper pour with small head. Floral hop aroma with a bit of malt behind it. Well balanced flavor of malt and hops. Pretty good brew, better than the other Dominions I’ve had.
3.2 Poured a reddish amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, caramel malts, toast, toffee, and a bit of nuts. Taste of grapefruit, citrus fruits, woody hops, pine, and light tobacco.
3.4 Amber, small head. Hoppy nose, malts, astringently dry bitter hoppy finish; nice contrast with several far less interesting beers around it at the DBF.
3.1 Draught at Old Dominion Brewhouse, Washington DC Deep blond color. Light but nice hop aroma. It has some malt flavor, getting better in the final, with a discreet hopping; quite strong bitterness, with fairly good hops. Pleasant.
3.8 On tap at KSBF ’08. Amber body with no head. Nose of fresh citrus. Flavor of pine and citrus. Pretty good.
3.4 Pours a light amber color with a small white head. Crisp hop aroma, cut grass and a touch of pine. Refreshing body, slightly bitter finish. Not bad.
3.4 Bottle from VA. Copper red with a fizzy head. Caramel and hops aroma and taste with some mild bitterness, fairly well balanced.
3.2 12 oz. bottle from a sampler, bottle 073108. Clear brown pour with not much head. Cascade hop aroma is strong with some vegetal notes. Very leafy hop taste with a grainy malt background. Medium bodied. Nice beer.
3.1 Copperish color, thin head, disipates quickly. A nice hop bite, not too bitter for a pale. Deep malty flavor. Lots of carmel. I like this beer.
2.6 On tap in Reagan Airport. Amber coloured beer. Aroma is lightly malty. A bit of herbal/toasty sweetness. Fairly generic though with not a whole lot of character. Low bitterness, kind of herbal. Meh.
2.5 on tap at the Ice House, light fruit nose with a decent golden yellow color, some grapefruit citrus flavor with a thin watery finish
1.8 On tap - Dominion brewpub - May 2008 Pours and coppery red color. I could detect no aroma at all - no hops, not malts - nada. Flavor matched the aroma - thin and weak. If seltzer were a beer - this would be it. It was crisp and dry, but damn near flavorless. Is this Budweiser’s influence showing on Dominion now that they own them??
3.3 Copper colored, somewhat thin head and a little bit of lace. Sweet, malty aroma, although not very strong. Seems like a nice blend of hops and malts. There’s a quick malt taste with a fairly smooth hoppy finish. Both are easily detected. Finishes a little bitter. The more you taste it the more the bitter mouthfeel comes out. A pretty good Pale Ale.
3.4 amber pour ... sour musty aroma .... tastes 10x better than it smells... nice bitter hop pine citrus smart with a smooth middle and a crisp bitter finish .... I had to go back to check the aroma ... some of the original skunk disappeared, but not all of it ... good tasting beer, but I was thrown off by the aroma .... went back for the 3rd time ... now aroma is fine .. classic IPA, citrus and pine resin ... overall nice hop and malt balance .... I’m staying local to the brewery, I have to stop by and and see if they have it on draft
3.3 tap, reddish in color, pearly white head, aroma is floral, a very delectable pale ale.
3.6 Poured from the bottle into a tall glass. A cloudy, dark amber color with a creamy, off-white head that had good retention and cling. The aroma featured a rich, floral hop scent and caramel malt. Flavor was an interesting balance of sweetness and bitterness, and well comprised. A very good mouthfeel, with a creamy, wet and full body and moderate carbonation. Overall a high quality beer with good character and definition.
3.6 Nice lite copper color, Small head. Floral aroma, light but pleasant. Bitter but balanced enough, with a nice hop flavor. A solid PA fo’ sho’.
3.5 On draft at Dulles. Poured a dark orange color with a good sized off white head. Aroma of toffee, citrus and nuts. Flavor was much of the same. Nice palate. Good for the style.
2.3 Chestnut and grapefruit aroma in excellent proportions. Hazy ochre color with a thick yellow head. Quite dry and nutty, but not strong and not very good either. It leaves a bitter waxy film that ruins it for me. How can something smell so nice and taste so bad? There must be aromatic additives.
2.7 Clear, copper hued pour. Weird, slightly pungent aroma. Vinegar, sesame seeds, saltine crackers, cold honey. Hamster cage steam is dominant. Similarly vague dirty hop taste. Crystal, dry honey granola, and mild bitter grapefruit. A swift hint of leafy green tea soaks in briefly before the finish. Crisp and clean at that point. Palate of medium strength; prickly, slippery texture. Foulness is fleeting. Boring and decent.
3.8 355 ml. Clear copper with a medium and lasting head. Aroma is of buttery, slightly soured fruit soaked in beer. Flavor has a similar twang and fruitiness, with big support from toasted nut and dry malted grain flavors. Palate is almost medium-bodied, slightly dry and tingly. I used to get this on tap at Norfolk airport a lot, and always thought the sour taste was just due to high temps on the kegs during transport; I still like the diacetyls and sourish twang.
3.4 May 2005 - Poured with a coppery color that was slightly almost clear. Small head that dissipated very quickly...which was unimpressive. Not much aroma. On to taste...this really tasted like an IPA rather than just a Pale Ale. Strong flowery hop presence with buttery, almost "chewy tasting" malt backbone. At least it had more going on in there than just hops and water.
3.6 on tap-pours an offwhite head and copper color. Aroma is citrus hops-some cascade. Taste is citrus hops-some cascade, secondary medium malt. Easy drinking. OK/mild carbonation.
