3.5 Another excellent Wee Heavy beer. I’m having a hard time deciding which I liked more. I think it goes Belhaven, Sam Adams and then Dragonmead. But it’s close.
2.8 8/11/12. GTMW. Brown pour with a small tan head. Light caramel and some toast in the aroma and flavor. For the most part, it’s really watered down, but compared to the disasters that are their other beers, it’s not horrible.
2.9 dark amber with small head. fairly malty with slight nuttiness. i keep trying things from this brewery, but i’ve yet to be impressed at all.
3.8 This 12 oz bottle was courtesy of Strykzone in a trade. Thanks dave. This pours a rich dark amber with a robust that left moderate lacing. Nose is rich sweet malts with a flavor hops aroma,. Medium plus in body. Flavor is rich malts. There is some bitterness in the finish. The bottom like is that is tastes very good and is a very excellent example of the style. I liked this a lot. with
3.9 12Oz bottle from plum market in Ann arbor. Brown pour with huge tan head. Aroma is pleasant caramel brown sugar, dark fruit. Tastes are nutty, molasses, sour milk, dried fruit. Diggin on this.
3.6 12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours hazy dark reddish brown color with a fairly dense 1 finger khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge raisin, grape, plum, molasses, caramel, toasted malt, bread, and light earthiness. Pretty nice aromas, that are much fruitier than I was expecting. Taste of big raisin, plum, tart cherry, caramel, molasses, toast, light chocolate, bread, earth, and a bit of a metallic twang. Lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, caramel, bread, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Flavors are quite balanced; but there are a bit of off flavors noticeable. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel as expected. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed well after the finish. Overall this is a good wee heavy. It was certainly fruitier than I was anticipating; but it was still quite enjoyable.
3.0 pours a dark copper with a quarter inch tan head.aroma is malty, peat, honey and tart cherries.flavor matches aroma and becomes slightly bitter in the finish.medium carbonation and the body seems a little thin to me for a scotch ale.living very close to dragonmead this is the first time ive tried this.aroma and flavor are pretty good but the thin body knocks its marks down.
3.6 Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a dark amber-brown color with a medium light beige head that evaporates steadily. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of peaty malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark fruit and hops. The finish is malty with notes of berries left behind. Above average overall.
4.8 Love this stuff, it embodies the best in a scotch ale. Deep rich color, raisan/plum flavor & not too boozy,.
3.4 Draft with a meal. Shiny, copper color. Light tan head. Robust peat/malt taste. Full bodied aftertaste. Nice scotch ale.
2.9 Bad Bottles? I have had three of these, and all three fit this description: light cherry pie tartness, very highly carbonated with dig dense lasting head. Very light mouthfeel, slightly bitter aftertaste. This really doesn’t taste like a scotch ale at all, closer to a flemish red, but it’s not bad! For that reason, part of my rating reflect style considerations.
3.3 Draft. Malt and peat aroma, thin head, thick and murky looking with a light brown / deep tan color. Full body. A good scotch ale.
3.0 12oz bottle from Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI. Pours a deep ruby-brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown colored head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is sweeter fruits and caramel with a touch of crystal and toast. A hint of earth as well. Flavor is similar. Off berry fruit flavor up front with a sweet caramel maltiness and some crystal. Some toast in the middle with a richer toffee before some earth comes in at the end along with some roast before this finishes a bit lactic to go with the sweetness. It does dry nicely as more and more roast comes out to cut the malts with a light bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, this has some decent things going on, but the lactic berry fruit flavor is too much. It wasn’t bad, but could use some work.
3.2 Bottle in Ann Arbor. Dark red brown appearance with a light brown head. Big, rich toffee, very rich caramel malty, earthy hoppy aroma. Thick, somewhat fruity, toffee, rich caramel malty flavor.
3.1 Not a bad beer but a little light for the style, boozy with a bit of caramel. Overall not the best I’ve ever had, but I’m sure it’ll get better!!
3.4 12 oz. bottle bought in Michigan. This pours mahogany with a very small tan head that soon becomes a thin ring. A sweet rich malt nose with grain. It seems more Scotch than would be found in Scotland. That describes the flavor, too. Alcohol is noted but is not obtrusive. I taste a bit of chocolate, too. Hops emerge as it warms and they could be Cascade with citrus and a bit of bitter tartness. Earth comes later. This was a nice version of the style.
2.7 bottle... a bit of an ugly shade of brown, light watery tan had that tries to form a ring but fails... smells like an average scotch, some nice peat notes and caramel, solid... tastes way too scotchy and thin at the same time, disappointed
3.9 Sample at Dragonmead on 7/23/11. Clear red pour with a thin beige head. Malty nose with lots of dark fruit, berries and some caramel. Caramel malt flavor that’s sweet and candyish with some fruity character before a sweet finish.
2.9 drank at mondial 2011 in mtl. pours a medium dark brown with an off-white head, decent retention and lacing. some toasted malts - no malt structure or depth, nice grassy and smoky finish. average carbonation, medium to full body.
3.0 A reddish brown ale with a thick big bubbled moka head. In aroma,a buttery scotch, herbal and cloying. In mouth, a sweet licorice butterscotch, caramel, grass, cloying. Bottle at Mondial 2011, June 12 2011.
3.5 Pours amber with no head. Fairly thick with a sweet aroma. Flavor typical of scotch beers, but more drinkable than most.
3.1 One of their better known brews is Under the Kilt, a Scottish style export ale. With an attention grabbing name, it’s often the first contact many drinkers have with Dragonmead. A hefty 7.8 percent ABV and 1.080 O.G., this is no training wheels brew. It pours a deep, rich amber, nearly brown in color, but with nary a head to speak of. The nose is sweet, molasses and dark fruit in aroma, as is the first sip. Very rich, the sweetness pours over the tongue and almost demands a slow drinking pace. This may be an advantage, however, as the flavors open up at warmer temperatures. Towards the end, there was a hint of sour tang, probably due to age, but this was nonetheless a satisfying interpretation of a rather uncommon style and is definitely recommended. 2.9 Bottle. Poured into a tulip glass a VERY dark copper brown color with a slight tan head that settles and then collars around the glass. The aroma on this is...interesting, with a sour fruit like smell mixed with caramel, and vegetable. Medium mouthfeel with a creamy texture. The taste is I think a little better than the aroma with a soft, subdued spiced apple taste mixed with some notes of alcohol. Also has a sour pear taste. Not terrible but like no other Scotch Ale I have ever had before.
2.4 bottle - Pours dark amber and smells strongly of caramel malt. The taste is also of sweet caramel malt but unfortunately includes an off sour flavor that suggests infection. This brew still manages to be medium bodied, but what good be a tasty scotch ale is badly flawed by the sourness.
2.8 12 ounce bottle from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, MI. Opened 9/1/10. Pours a dark brown color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee and diacetyl. The taste is cherries, toffee, diacetyl, raisins, caramel. Medium bodied. Not bad, but a little bit off.
3.5 12 ounce thanks to klingea1. Caramel and sweetness. Lots of carbonation. Slight beery that may not be intended. Nice.
3.6 this was a decent beer to try. Dont know if I would get it again, it wasnt anything special but not bad either.
4.1 Bottle. Pours dark dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Scents of caramel and apple confused me when I tasted roasted flavors. I’m not sure whether this is was good or bad, let me taste again - nope still not sure. An interesting beer to be sure, my first wee heavy.
3.6 Bottle - Dark brown pour. Great taste and initial mouthfeel. Medium tan head, with less lingering carbonation. Minimal lacing, and subtle ’scotch’ flavor. A bit too sweet. Poured aroma off-putting.
4.0 Comes out of the tap an opaque dark brown with a pale tan head. Aroma is rich, malty, woody and slightly honey-sweet. Mouth filling malty flavor has undertones of molasses and honey and just a hint of woody taste. Texture is fizzy and tingly, quite satisfying.
