3.7 Smell is wonderful sweet malt...with some barrel aged smell and light alcohol....taste is strong on the dark roasted malts and more bitter than the smell leads on...but not too bitter to be unpleasant...starts with roasted malt, then moves to lactose and sweetness and then finishes with lactose and alcohol...bold flavor, solid mouthfeel and ok smoothness...solid overall... Had at old mill brewpub for lunch as pandemic still carries on amongst the unvaxxed with 901k US deaths... Omicron varient still spreading quickly...and I even got it from Megan a couple weeks ago, but was triple vaxxed and it was pretty much nothing
4.0 2017 version. Big, black, roasty, chewy, slightly sweet, hint of booze and vanilla, nicely dry. Really solid stout.
3.7 12 ounce bottle from Stein's Lincoln St, 11/28/21. They tell me this is new ,so, mmkay. Dark brown, thin head, poor retention. Aroma of roast, molasses, dark fruit. Taste is molasses, roast, vanilla, green hops. Dark chocolate, buckwheat, mild coffee. Full bodied, decent balance for the booziness. Nice. Earlier Rating: 4/5/2014 Total Score: 3.5 Bomber shared at the April 5, 2014 Charlottesville tasting. Pours a dark brown color with a thin tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of chocolate, nuts, whiskey, mild wheat. The taste is chocolate, roast, nuts, mild whiskey. Medium bodied.
3.3 Taster showing pitch black with sparse white foam. The nose shows moderately intense sweet notes of coffee and light mocha. The palate is lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Lightly alcoholic with light notes of dark chocolate with a moderately hoppy bitterness. Earlier Rating: 7/26/2016 Total Score: 3.5 4.0 tap into a snifter showing pitch black and no head. The nose shows a lot of intense roasted malt notes. Upon warming up, bourbon notes of oak, vanilla, smoke, and a nice banana note in the background. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. A very intense but dry nutty forwardness begins the attack, the mid palate revealing the bourbon in the background. Big apparent alcohol spiciness running throughout and on the finish. Rye lends itself to the spiciness with a roasted malt bitterness framed around the bourbon oak and vanilla. Great flavors but the alcohol spice is a little too overwhelming.
3.8 Didn't realise this was a new entry (at least for now). Hmm. Fudge, Indian sweets, whiskey is a bit much for the underlying beer. Perhaps the booze sticks out a little less in this one. Earlier Rating: 4/6/2014 Total Score: 3.8 Tap. Black, small tan head lasts well. Aroma of vanilla, mocha, nutty/ fudgy Indian sweets, cardamon, galangal. Rich velvety texture. Taste has mocha vanilla, lush fudginess but a nice lean towards dry near the end. Unfortunate big boozy rush at the end is a jolt. Maybe better in bottles - it’s not hot or unpleasant, but jumps out a bit. Better as it warms: booze more integrated into bourbon-like flavours, but still a bit much for the beer.
3.3 12 oz bottle received as a birthday gift from my wife. The pour is an opaque black brown with a ⅓ inch foamy khaki head that is lasting. The aroma is chocolate malt, nutty pecan and some spice from the rye. The taste is carmel mat right up front, rich, sugary, Bourbon, oak and alcohol present. As the beer warms, I get the rye and pecan notes, though not really any of the chocolate I get on the nose. The palate is medium to heavier bodied, soft low carbonation and the mildly burning alcohol finish. Not exactly my cup of beer, but fun.
4.5 Cake&Stout! Marvellous richness of coffee, chocolate, licorice, cocoa and pecans. Thick, rich and sweet.
3.8 $3.10 bottle, WW. Very dark brown, not quite black, with a dusting of a head. Nose is bourbon, brownie, cocoa, chocolate, toasted nuts, vanilla. Dark chocolate, liquified brownie, vanilla, bourbon, nuts, roasted dark malt. Quite good. Light booziness in the end. Earlier Rating: 8/12/2017 Total Score: 3.8 2017 bomber, $9.49 from Wine Warehouse. Almost feels wrong to be enjoying a beer today, but I have to take my mind off of the insanity that’s happening right here in my city. Pours thick and black with half inch of dark brown head. Aroma is slightly boozy chocolate, a little smoked peat, cookie, vanilla. Flavor is sweet chocolate - reminds me of a chocolate chip cookie, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, a little nuttiness.
3.8 Pours pitch black w/ a quickly fading mocha head & little lacing. The aroma is pretty much bourbon & booze. The flavor is surprisingly mild. There’s a touch of bourbon & a hint of pecan but otherwise a pretty standard imperial. It has a slick, oily mouthfeel. Still very good nevertheless. Earlier Rating: 8/15/2015 Total Score: 4 Omg! Delickousness, smooth, 13%? Really? Love this! So good w/ an excellent mouthfeel!
4.8 w00tstout has a medium, beige head, and a very dark brown appearance, with no lacing. The aroma is of dark-roasted malts (brown bread crust) and bourbon barrels. The flavor is the same, with lots of sweetness, but no bitterness. w00tstout has a medium body, and a semi-sweet finish. RJT
4.2 12 oz bottle from Kroger in Short Pump, VA I feel honored to do the second review on such an outstanding stout. My first reaction was "Oh My!" The black velvet stout poured to an opaque black color with a head that seemed to regenerate itself. The head was light tan and easily formed a tan collar on the stout. The aroma of roasted malts and pecans is detected on the nose. The taste has hints of dark chocolate, roasted malts, and pecans. The balance of all these ingredients is amazing. The stout has a medium body and soft carbonation. I purchased a six-pack, so fun for a week. Thanks, Stone and Wil Wheaton! Earlier Rating: 1/12/2020 Total Score: 3.8 12 oz can from Total Wine and More in Short Pump, Va The stout pours an opaque black color with a tan head that dissipated quickly. No lacing. The aroma of roasted malts tinged with chocolate and pecans. The taste is most complex. This is the first of this style for me from Stone. The stout has a medium body and soft carbonation. Only hints of the bourbon barrel aging, which is good. Some brewers age too long.
3.9 Earlier Rating: 3/5/2020 Total Score: 3.9 Can. Very dark brown with a small, light tan head. Aroma was burnt grains, hints of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Taste was also chocolate, coffee and vanilla.
4.3 I’ve had two of the previous versions of w00tstout. I liked both very much. So then seeing a six pack of 12 oz bottles of the 2021 vintage at the local supermarket, I didn’t hesitate to purchase. My favored New Belgium snifter awaits the pour. I see a black-brown liquid with a top of yellowish tan, finely bubbled foam. Great carbonation keeps the head recharged. The scent is glorious, dark chocolate, nuts of some kind and a touch of booziness. And the drink does not disappoint. Semisweet chocolate, grain, the pecans show up, oak and alcohol. I definitely feel the burn as it goes down. An appropriate bitterness. Less sweet than expected but no complaint from me. Best tasting I have had in some time. Earlier Rating: 4/1/2018 Total Score: 4.4 After a fine Easter evening dinner I settle back with this imperial stout. The 22 oz bottle followed me home a couple of months ago. Purchased at The Cellar in nearby Odessa, I see a born on date of 6/23/17. I pop the cap and deliver the goods into my best stout tulip glass from Buffalo Bayou. A classic intro, an ebony black body finished by a soon disappearing medium tan head. I tilt for a smell, nice, berry, a moderate chocolate, something roasty. The first taste, really nice. Dark chocolate, caramel and toffee, toast, a hint of booziness and a firm accompanying bitterness. Full, rich. I hope to find again, meanwhile there is the rest of the bottle waiting.
4.1 6th iteration (6/29/19). Appearance is an opaque black with tons of sparkle, finger width light brown foamy head with excellent retention and nice lacing. Aroma is strong toffee, tart fruit, milder roasted malts and bourbon. Taste is strong mix of toffee and bourbon with milder tart fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth, creamy texture, soft to average carbonation, alcohol warmth and crisp finish as taste. Overall, is nice flavor and taste with main distinguishing feature the bourbon. Rye and pecans have faded. Still, well done.
3.7 Bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of liquor, sweet malt, oak barrel, bourbon, vanilla, rye. Flavor of raisin, dark fruits, sweet malt, booze, vanilla, bourbon, oak barrel, roasted malt, roasted pecans. Sweet, boozy, decadent. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)
3.6 11.5 ABV. Smell of malt, tar. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of tar, mämmi, burnt sugar. Like an imperial baltic porter. Very bitter. Flat carbon. Oily.
4.1 Pitch black. Medium-sized, beige head. Roasted malt, chocolate, maple syrup, oak and nuts in the aroma. Great balance of malt and roasted bitterness. Semi-dry, warming finish.
3.9 Dose 0,355l: Schwarz, kräftige Trübung, kräftiger mäßig stabiler beiger mittelporiger Schaum; würzige + fruchtige Nase, kräftig malzig, dunkle würzig-fruchtige Süße, Malz, Getreide, dunkles Karamell, dezente Hopfennoten, dunkle/eingelegte Früchte, Beeren, Röstaromen, leicht speckig, Kaffee, kräftige würzige Eiche, würzig-fruchtige Bitterkeit; sehr süßer + sehr würziger Körper, dunkle/eingelegte Früchte, dunkle Beeren, leichte Röstaromen, nussig, Röstmalz, Getreide, dunkles Karamell, cremig, kräftige Kohlensäure, dezente Hopfennoten, Kaffee, Kaffeelikör, dunkle Schokolade; angenehmer fruchtig-würziger Nachgang
4.0 660ml bottle from The Beerhive. Big tan head, good lacing. Dark black body. Nose of syrup, coffee, smoky whiskey, biscuit. Flavour is dark chocolate, cream, sugar, coffee. Bitter coffee lingers on the aftertaste with a little bourbon. Light carbonation, rich creamy mouthfeel, a little oily and sticky. Great big stout, doesn’t feel boozy but it’s undoubtedly a big hitter.
3.8 355 ml can. Murky black, no head. Liquorice, toffee, molasses, burnt sugar, dried dates and figs, maple syrup, peppery notes, espresso, black cherries. Boozy sweetness, some roasty bitterness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonated, dry boozy sweet finish. Good heavy stuff.
3.9 Schöne Optik dunkle mit schönem Schaum, im Geruch malzig süß nussig, die Peacans kommen ganz schön raus dazu viel Karamell etwas Alkohol recht süß
3.8 12oz Flasche. 2018 Jahrgang. Mit 11,5%. Schwarzes Bier, moussierender Schaum. Süsser Pecan Duft. Röstmalz und etwas Alkohol. Auch sehr süss im Antrunk. Melasse, Röstmalz, Pecan. Ein Hauch Rum. Schweres Bier.
4.1 2019 pint
4.0 Zacznę od puszki, spoko, ciekawa, przykuwa uwagę, z grafiką Alana Davisa. Piana zerowa. Kolor czarny, nieprzejrzysty. W aromacie sporo słodyczy, wanilii, toffi, likieru, kawy, czekolady, orzechów pekan, do tego beczka, ale na pierwszym planie na pewno słodycz. Smak lekko gryzący, z przewagą burbona, beczki, trochę czekolady, kawy i likieru. Alkohol lekko wyłażący. Całkiem spoko i godne polecenia, w cenie niezaporowej.
4.1 6-pack 12oz cans. Thought I’d take a break from California IPAs when I saw this at my corner store which just stepped up their beer game. Pours thick and syrupy. Thin tan head dissipated quickly. Opaque deep brown color with molasses, chocolate, and pecan aroma. For 11.5%, little booze on the finish, but lingers in the aftermath. Flavors of molasses, a little coffee, pecan, and a little cakiness. If it wasn’t a $20 sixer, I’d drink this stuff regularly.
3.6 2019 vintage listed at 11.2%. Black with a thin, creamy head. Mild birthday cake aroma. A touch of pecan. Taste is sweet, full of chocolate. The long and boozy finish brings the first hint of the promised bourbon. Decent stuff, even if unexceptional for the style.
3.7 22 oz bottle. 2017 vintage. (Hollingshead's) Orange, CA. Enjoyed on Jan 18, 2020. HHOK XXIV. Black color with a tiny tan head. Roasted malt, molasses, licorice and ashy dryness in the aroma. Alcohol, roasted malt, bitterness, soy sauce, licorice and molasses in the flavor. Barrel aging is not that evident.
3.7 Pours a rich dark brown but has almost no head, and the little head that was present after the pour was gone in an instant. Aroma of licorice and dark fruit. Wow, the flavor is way different than the aroma. Tons of caramel. Smooth in the mouth. Also, I wouldn't have guessed this as over 11% ABV. Earlier Rating: 8/25/2016 Total Score: 3.9 Pours a dark rich brown, but not black like some imperial stouts. Head also goes down somewhat quickly for a stout after initially presenting as a mocha/caramel head. However, the head continues to build from the bottom impressively so doesn’t entirely disappear. Aroma of cherries, licorice and dark, rich fruits. Maybe a bit of molasses in the aroma as well. Smooth, rich chocolate in the mouth with just a hint of bitterness. You can taste a bit of alcohol in this beer, but it is 13% after all. I really can’t get over how velvety this beer feels in the mouth. And the aftertaste is probably better than the taste while drinking, which is a plus with a beer this strong. You can enjoy each sip for quite a while. Good beer.
3.8 I’ve had this before and thought I rated it but guess not. Pecans, Rye, some roasts notes, not too boozy for the ABV
4.2 AR: Bourbon, Vanille, spritig, süss, Karamell, nussig, Lakritz, Holz AP: pechschwarz TA: Bourbon, Vanille, Kaffee, nussig
