3.9 750 ml bottle at home, vintage 2016. Pours a hazy dark copper with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, red wine and oak - biscuit, caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee and hazelnuts. Medium-full body with a soft to average carbonation, a light to medium sweetness, a light bitterness, a notable woody tartness and hints of alcohol. The barrel notes are very dominant in the flavor - lots of red wine and wood, toasted sweet malt, bread, lots of dark fruits, raisins and brown sugar. Finishes relatively dry, with more red wine and wood and a light warming feeling. Pretty good with a very distinct barrel character. Aroma: 8 Appearance: 4 Taste: 8 Palate: 3 Overall: 16
4.0 Goût très complexe mais très lourd. Il manque quelque chose. L’odeur désagréable.
3.3 Cuvee Speciale 2014 bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden brown from the bottle with bubbly white foam that dissipates to leave a small ring of light lace. Aroma of oxidized caramel and bready malts and light spicy Belgian esters with a touch of booze. Taste is more of the same, light malt and oxidation, light esters and booze. Booze is well hidden, but the flavor is super light and boring. Meh.
3.8 750 ml bottle. Pour an orange brown with moderate head. Aromas of woody caramel, sugary raisins and bready malts. Flavors of Belgian yeast, candi sugar alcohol, dark fruit, and bready malts. Additional vinous wood and licorice. Complex. Solid.
3.7 Bottle at Haydens probably in 2011-12. Pours an amber brown color with a medium off-white head. Nose and flavor are caramel malt, oak, lemons, spices, and fruit. Finish is pretty boozy and warming in the belly.
3.6 Pours somewhat hazy caramel with a fair ivory head. Aroma provides toasted malt, caramel, tropical notes. Flavor gives tart and sweet tropical and pomme, toasted malt, a woody hop hint. Texture yields fair body and peppy fizz. Parlez vous Français?
4.2 750mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Nose is very complex, with red wine barrels, wood, Belgian yeast, some candied sugar, and a touch of molasses. Flavour is equally complex, with a wonderful red wine barrels, Belgian yeast, deep dark fruits, and wood. Champagne-like mouthfeel, with higher-than-average, but totally fitting, carbonation. Wonderful.
3.9 Smells like dried fruit - prunes, figs, belgian yeast, caramel . Tastes bitter-sweet, with notes of dark fruit, dried fruit, a bit of dark chocolate, spices, yeast.
4.6 After tasting the original, I was eager to try the wine cask version, very savoury, well-balanced wine taste, fabulous!
3.5 Figs and dark sugars. Cloudy gold with a decent white. Dark date notes with some rich bready notes.
3.6 Reddish brown. Sweet, malty, notes of fruit, molasses almond paste, caramel, vanilla, and booze. Some vinous notes, but not sour. Bottle from Sarah.
4.2 750ml bottle, gift from ippopotamo36 (thank you!). Ambrata/rame intensa, schiuma avorio/senape media, discretamente persistente. In bocca è dolce all'attacco con note vinose acide, legno, leggera astringenza. Corpo pieno, carbonazione media. Eccellente.
4.5 Bottle, 2016. Color: Copper, stable dense off-white head. Aroma: Red fruit, hints of caramel and vinuous hints. Taste: Vinuous and fruity. Clear yet subtle red wine notes, malt, red fruit, prunes and sugary, wood and light caramel hints. Pretty complex flavours. Moderate sweet and bitter and lightly sour, very well balanced. Bit boozy. Dry-ish mouthfeel. Over medium body, under average carbonation. One of the best, most complex and best balanced Belgian beers in my opinion.
4.1 Appearance: Pours hazy dark amber with a rich creamy off-white head, with lacing. 5/5 Aroma: Vanilla, caramel, yeast, malt, spices, oak and floral notes, with slight hints of red berries and leather. Boozy and vinous. 8/10 Taste: Yeast, caramel, malt, strawberry, red berries, spice and oak, with an alcohol burn. Heavy sweetness nice balanced with tartness and alcohol, bitterness is minimal. Dry fruity, oaky and spicy finish, hot without oxidation. 8/10 Mouthfeel: Full bodied, oily and tingling while some tannin can be noticed, light carbonated. 4/5 Overall: Powerful, rich and classic. Need oxidation. 16/20
Liknande i smak. Russin, katrinplommon, nötter, fat och örter. Mustig
3.8 Bottle 2015. Nose is vinous, acidic, balsamic, malt, yeast, red currant, raspberry, marzipan, almond. Taste is pronounced red wine, almond, cherry, more wine, marzipan, pear, raspberry, herbal, balsamic, bretty, hints of leather, wood, dry tannin note, vanilla, nut,. Slick beer which is bone dry. It's enjoyable.
4.7 (old cognac, nez ∞-vineux-boisé (pourri), red fruit, liquoreuse, aigre, très fructosé, fruits red-noir, vin rouge, floc, superbe)
3.4 Panel "Nudna Anglia vs Nieciekawa Belgia" w Strefie Piwa. W aromacie sporo kandyzowanego cukru, troszkę suszonych owoców, alkohol w stylu wina wzmacnianego spirytusem. Dość urokliwy, mimo oczywistych wad. W smaku słodkawe, ale dość szybko wchodzi mocny alkohol. Wysokie wysycenie, leciutko owocowy finisz. Nie urzekło jakoś specjalnie.
4.2 750ml bottle pours out amber topped with a small head. Nose is great fig pit fruit notes grape sweet fruit notes a little funk and plenty barrel. Tatse is more of the nice sweet malts some grape oak barrel pit fruit and spice. Very nice
4.0 Bottle, Cuvée speciale 2015. Reddish brown with white frothy head. Aroma of brown sugar, fruity Yeasty esters, darkfruit, herbal hops, red wine, oak tannins. Moderate Sweet, light sour and light bitter. Some alcoholic warmth. A nice one...
4.3 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; 2014 vintage bottling, best before 3/11/2017. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep reddish orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, currant, raspberry, blackberry, apricot, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, red/white wine, cinnamon, clove, nuttiness, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, molasses, brown bread, and biscuit; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, licorice, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, currant, raspberry, blackberry, apricot, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, red/white wine, cinnamon, clove, nuttiness, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, molasses, brown bread, and biscuit; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, licorice, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast/oak spiciness and light wine tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, currant, cherry, berry, apricot, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, red/white wine, cinnamon, clove, nuttiness, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, molasses, brown bread, biscuit, vanilla, licorice, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/spiciness and wine tang/tartness balance; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from yeast/oak spiciness, wine tang/tartness, and carbonation. Medium-plus carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky/tannic, and lightly slick/syrupy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a lightly increasing warmth of 13%, with minimal booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged Belgian strong dark ale! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Perfect balance of yeast, malt, and Bourgogne barrel complexity. Never overly sweet/heavy feeling for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example. Definitely worth the price to try once.
3.9 75cl bottle split with SimonBlok. Cuvée spéciale 2014. Pours a dark brown yet reddish colour with a small off white head and visible carbonation. Aroma of wine, red fruit, caramel, grapes, lime, raspberries, slight funk, slight vanilla. Taste is moderate sweet, light bitter with a medium dry finish and a vinous sourness. Notes of grapes, lime, funk, wine, slight salty liquorice sweet, malt, red fruit, red berries. Texture is sticky, full bodied with moderare carbonation
3.9 3 year old 75cl bottle, courtesy of Gyhallmanti. Bottle says Cuvee Spéciale 2014. Appearance: reddish brown with a small off-white head and some tiny colloidal particles floating inside and even some visible. Aroma: pretty funky and bretty, red wine, brown sugar, lemon, some tannins. Taste: pretty high sweetness, medium bitterness and subtle sourness. Notes of red wine, brown sugar, some bretty character that could originate from the wine barrel, sour cherries, some red fruits and citrus. Palate: medium bodied, oily texture and medium carbonation. Complex and balanced
4.1 Butelka 750 ml, z korkiem. W smaku mocno wysycony Belg.
3.5 0,7l bottle (2012) Apperance: A unclear amber with a small beige head. That quickly dissapears. Aroma: malts, alcohol, red fruit, wood. Taste:vininousl, wood, red fruit(Cherries), grapes, leather, malts, a hint of caramel, light sour, sweet, and then it becomes thin before the alcohol kicks sharp in. Thin to Medium body, a bit. fizzyish carbonation, It's a bit rough in certain places for instance how sharp the alcohol comes in in the finnish and the thinness taste before the finish. Which is really odd for a 13% ABV beer. Overall more then ok, but I think this could have been done better and some things just did not work out for me.
3.9 Bottled 2010. Brown color, medium sized, quickly diminishing beige head. Some lees. Slight tart and vinous aromas with cherries, grapes, toffee, ripe fruits and dried figs. Vinous taste with alcohol, wood, dried figs, grapes, leather and gooseberries. A bit thin during the finish. Might be due to the old age.
