DuClaw Devils Milk

DuClaw Devils Milk

Devil’s Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devil’s Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing “after-dinner” drink or nitecap.

4.2 Bottle from Total Wine and More in Sterling, VA Aroma: dark fruit, caramel, citrus Appearance: clear amber-orange with an off-white head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish, Delicious
3.7 Pours dark copper, big light tan head. Aroma is intense malt, dark fruit, raisins hint of pear. Taste is dark fruit forward, then big burst of bitter pine hops. Alcohol quite noticeable. Alcohol and hops somewhat mask the dark fruit that was more apparent in the nose. More of a general dark malt flavor. Heavy mouthfeel.
4.4 First review and I’m not good with all of the beer adjectives. However, this is a damn good barley wine beer...well worth the 97 score
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark orange/Amber colors and topped by a thin layer of off white foam that quickly fades away any barely leaves a small film. The aroma shows notes of citrus fruit with orange and grapefruit followed by some dark fruit notes with plums, figs, and cherries most noticeable over a toasted caramel and toffee malt base and some floral/earthy esters from the yeast. The flavor follows with a nice mix of the citrus fruit to go with the plums, figs, and cherries along with notes of toasted caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and toasted bread. Ample amounts of citrus and earthy bitterness on the back end to help balance things out. Medium bodied and very slick on the palate with average carbonation that leads to a bitter sweet citrus, plum, and toffee finish with a nice dryness from the yeasty esters. Just a touch of warming from the booze that lingers as well. Solid barley wine overall with a great depth of flavor.
3.1 Bottled on January 30, 2017. Picked up as a single from Luekens Dunedin ($3.99). Clear pale brown color, small white head. Malty, fruity, alcohol scent. Alcohol, sweet, bitter, malty taste. Medium full mouthfeel, medium high to high bitterness.
3.8 It pours amber with an off white head. It has a malty rich aroma of bread and hints of caramel. There are also aromas of oranges and plums. There is a strong hoppy bitter taste initially with heavy malt. There malt flavors feature toast and caramel and the hops flavors feature plums, oranges, hints of raisins and hints of pear. It has a full, chewy body with a sharply bittler after tastes Overall, this is well balance with a slight edge to the hops initially and the hops being more predominant in the finish.
3.6 Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Apalachee Parkway - 12 oz bottle. Light copper pour, medium thick khaki colored head, light lace. Aroma has some piney accents, a touch of fruit salad sweetness. Bold flavor with with a great balance of bitterness and maltiness, some chocolate sweetness, a touch of piney bitterness. Not too boozy like some barley wines can tend to be, Thiickish mouthfeel, Solid,
3.6 Pour is a clear dark amber with a small white head. Aroma is sweet molasses malt with a touch of dark fruit and maybe some cherry as well. Flavor is a very nice chewy molasses malt with some fig jam and a touch of white oak. The beer is thick and rich with a little alcohol heat but not sweet at all. Pretty decent barley wine.
4.0 12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 8/25/2016. Pours slightly hazy medium orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, peach, plum, pear, melon, white grape, lemon, berry, orange peel, light pepper/pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light toffee, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, peach, plum, pear, melon, white grape, lemon, berry, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light toffee, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, plum, berry, orange peel, pepper, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly slick/silky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a great American barleywine! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. A very unique mix of hop flavors with a nice malt backbone. Well balanced with good bitterness, without being overly aggressive. A very enjoyable offering.
3.7 12oz bottle (2016 vintage) - nose is biscuits and wild grass. Sip adds booze, caramel, and forest berries. a kapow of bitterness and sweetness. a tad rough around the edges, but prolly cause it’s so young. a great value. grapefuit finish.
3.8 12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter. Pours with a clear copper-brown body topped by a thin, mostly short-lived head. Spotty lacing. Aroma: Sweet and boozy, with hints of dark fruits, apples and toffee. Flavor. Similar to the aroma, with soft and dried fruits, faint hops and caramel. Modest complexity. Overall: Smoother and, perhaps, better, than the bourbon barrel aged version (Hell on Wood).
2.9 On tap at P&P Charleston. Slightly hazy copper with medium off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, medium/thick body, and good small-bubble lacing. Taste is caramel malt and some alcohol.
3.2 Bottle. Pours an amber with minimal head. Some hop aroma. Bitter alcohol aftertaste.
3.2 Tap at Draught 55 to ensure I don’t get home too sober. Cloudy Amber pour nose isnsweet brown sugar and medicinal. Tastes of some herbs, brown sugar, oranges, resin and I saw posted burlap sack full disclosure and now that all I taste haha. Anyways little boozy and not much else.
3.5 Bottle pour. The beer is a clear brown with a white head of foam. The aroma has toffee, caramel, and herbal notes. Fairly sweet taste. Big body and moderate carbonation.
3.5 $2.45 Bottle from Wine Warehouse. I’ve gone against my better judgement and purchased a couple of DuClaw bottles that I hadn’t tasted before. Full disclosure: I am not a fan of this brewery overall and I typically steer clear of their beers lately. That being said, let’s go ahead and sample this. Pours clear deep amber with a gigantic beige head. I’d say I only poured a quarter of the bottle and I can’t get any more in. Aroma is quite pleasant: plums, nuts, pine, citrus. I’m starting to think this might end up being my highest rates DuClaw brew based on the aroma. Let’s see how it tastes.... Very nutty... lots of cashews, walnuts, hell even coconut. Then add some raisin, pine, vanilla, and alcohol. By far, my favorite from this brewery. Note: my bottle says 11.5% abv rather than 10.5%.
4.0 One of the best barley wines I have had. Great for drinking by the fireplace! You really wouldn’t know it is as strong as it is since it actually drinks very easily. Could be trouble if you had too many back to back. I could not find this around at all last year - very sad, missing it : (
3.9 Cloudy, dark yellow. A ton of head. The aroma is vanilla, almonds, honey, liquor. The flavor adds some spice and a fizzy mouthfeel. This is good barley wine.
3.2 12oz bottle. Another rot box beer. 2014 vintage. Pours a clear dark amber color with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of boozy caramel, plastic, hints of pine, and sweet rotted fruit. Taste of sweet caramel, earthy hops, grassy bitterness, toasted grains, and sweet fruit.
4.2 Devils milk high octane! Pours smooth and orange with a white head! Easy to drink and no bitter after tastes.
3.4 Pours up a hazy copper, with a thin off white head, and spotty lacing. Aroma of hops, resin and pine, some malts and some fruit. Taste is sweet, malty, some fruit notes and a sharp bitterness towards the end. Pretty boozy. This heavy hard hitter will knock your knocker in the dirt. Its strong. Not for every day use!
3.8 deep amber color; a bit cloudy; semi-sweet malt and alcohol aroma; a bit earthy; sweet malt; caramel malts and alcohol; dry, bitter finish with warm alcohol notes; well balanced
4.3 on tap @ Hebron Brew House / Hebron KY --- Slightly hazy dark amber color, beige head, full curtain of lace. Taste is bracing semi-sweet malt that becomes less sweet as it moves through a burst of carbonation, followed by earthy burlap and pear in a finish that offers only the possibility of hops. Bold, big, light in the belly, a really appealing brew. Highly recommended.
3.5 Bottle@home, from Wine Spot, Cleveland, USA. Medium/strong distinctive slightly artificial aroma with raisin, caramel and alcohol. Dark copper color with small light beige head and semi-hazy liquid. Strong complex taste with sweet raisin, plum, cherry and alcohol. Averagely balanced with wide/medium taste spectrum and long sweet hoppy aftertaste of sweet raisin and a hint of sweet malts. Medium/strong body with medium/light carbonation. Overall, distinctive taste but in a bit artificial and messy fashion.
3.2 12 oz. thick and sweet. Lots of toffee and candy sugar. A little bit of fruit. Orange. A little rough around the edges.
1.4 Bot. Pours a thicker looking menacing darker amber color. Mild sweet perfume aroma. First taste is bitter alky thang. Next taste is rough personality. Difficult fer sher. Strongish punch in the face. Volatile. Not too enjoyable IMHO. I guess it does what its s’posed to, make you dizzy.
3.7 Pours dark amber with an off white head. Aroma is dark dried fruit, caramel, and pine resin and alocohol. Sticky mouth feel. Flavor is caramel malt, dark dried fruit, brown sugar, and raisins. Finishes with booziness and pine resin.
3.9 On tap at Bethesda Food and Beverage. Nice dark orange body with medium head. Nose is hoppy, with some spices and barley in there. Very inviting. Taste is just great, with lots of floral notes, malts, barley, caramel and big alcy taste. Very strong kick to it. Really liked this. Nice creamy texture too.
3.7 Pours pale amber from bottle. Almost no head. Wood, malts, fruits. Very hopped. Pretty decent bwine
3.0 Tap, on release day so you know its fresh and highlighting the hops. Pours clear orange, small beige head, dissipates leaving decent lacing. Aroma is surprisingly light, hints of pine, perfume, floral notes, hints of cardboard, honestly. Flavor is light plus sweet, fully bitter, floral, perfume and pine. Medium body. Odd and not really appealing. Whats the draw here? At least the ABV is well hidden.
