2.9 [7790-20151005] Bottle. Malty chocolate mud aroma. Hazy, dark amber brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sweet malty burlap and wet grains and toasted crusts flavour. Medium body. Seems a little burnt. (7/3/5/3/11) 2.9 (w/ jercraigs)
4.0 Pours clear medium brown, thin tan head. Aroma is rich chocolate toffee, brownie like. Flavor is more toffee, caramel, hint of bitterness.
3.4 2015-10-05. Hazy dark brown body, small beige head fades. 3+ Aroma has some toasty malt, very light oxidation, toffee and notes of tootsie roll. Flavour is similar, dryish start and finish with pleasant toffee and caramel notes in the middle. Toasty not quite roasty malt. Average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Decent. Bottle from Ye Old Spirit Shop, Frederick, MD.
3.2 Tap. Pours clear deep amber, small beige head, dissipates leaving decent lacing. Aroma is malty, spicy, Belgian spiced almost, hint of nuttiness. Flavor is quite spicy, Belgian in character, spicy, grassy, herbal, caramel. Medium body. Weird and not what I expected. Bartender confirms the pour though.
3.2 Not a bad brown ale. It poured a clean, dark brown color with a light tan head. It left some nice lacing around the glass. There wasn’t much to the nose. It was on the bland side with just a touch of caramel. The flavors were also light and kind of watery with notes of toffee, caramel and light hops.
3.2 Pours a deep dark reddish brown with a slight off white head which is gone quickly.....aroma of smoked sweet malt.....taste is caramel, slight smoke, sweet toffee dropping off into bitterness. Interesting and different.
3.5 Bottle at Mason Social - in Alexandria VA. Poured a dark brown color, light brown head. Aroma was lots of toffee, sweet caramel notes. Light toffee, light bitter nutty notes, light maple.
3.3 Looks awful. Way too light for a brown ale with no head. Taste isn’t at all bad though, I get caramel, hazelnut, and a hint of coffee.
3.6 Strong toffee aroma with a touch of caramel, pours a clear (but very dark) amber with a full off white head. Sweet toffee and caramel notes carry the flavor, with just a little bitterness to keep it from being cloying. Higher carbonation also helps to lift the sweetness away. Medium body, and very drinkable. I’ll probably revisit this one when it cools off outside.
3.2 Chocolate, toffee, caramel, candy taste. Pretty sticky overall. Interesting brown ale, but wouldn't be a go to for me.
3.4 Bottle to shaker glass, pours clear reddish-brown. Two finger almost white pillowy head some lacing and retention. Aroma of coffee and hazelnuts. Taste is somewhat sweet with just a touch of bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, creamy mouth feel. Finishes sweet. Tasting notes of caramel, hazelnuts, faint chocolate, toasted malt and grass. It’s a pretty decent brown ale.
3.2 Dark brown with off white head. coffee like scent. Smooth, slightly bitter but also a tad sweet. Nutty (hazelnut?), caramel, coffee, bread flavors.
3.6 Some roast and a sharp but aroma. Some light toffee. Pours maroon with ok head. Bitter finish. Good, and well balanced. Tap at BWI brewpub.
3.4 A sweet, chocolate aroma . The color is dark brown, nearly opaque with white head. The taste is, well, like tootsie roll. A nice sweet mellow aftertaste. A good brown ale.
3.3 on tap at Secret Sandwich Society in Fayetteville, WV; reddish brown color; malty, nuttty aroma; nutty, caramel, toffee flavor; notes of coffee; fairly bitter finish
3.3 bottle. Pours amber brown with an average off-white. Aroma of toffee, caramel, and nuts. Flavor of sweet toffee, caramel, notes of brown sugar and some nuttiness.
3.5 Pours transparent dark brown with a small off white head. Aroma is candy like toffee and a bit of almond. Taste is sweet toffee and then a toasted english muffin with a nutty hint. Medium body, easy to drink. Interesting brown ale.
3.0 A nice take on a brown ale. Color is a little darker than most brown ales. The taste is quite creamy and the finish is nice and sweet.
3.2 Not sure where its coming from, but I’m getting hazelnuts in both the aroma and taste, on top of some caramel and toffee.. The whole thing comes off very sweet
2.7 bottled - toffee, brown ale. Taste is a bit artificial. Not terrible, but not as good as the other Duclaw brews that I’ve had (like Sweet Baby Jesus!)
2.5 Pours a soft amber that sits kind of tawny brown in the glass, one finger of off-white head. Looks like an insipid amber ale. Smells like Yoo-Hoo and dusty caramel. Some nutty/biscuity notes show as well and a stock/aged character. Dusty/musty flavor with some nutty and bready notes. Tastes stale-ish and not too hot. Light bodied and weak sauce.
3.0 pint At Tyler’s Apex. Ok aroma sweet. Cocoa. Nutty. Clean brownish orange color, ok head and lace. Sweet flavor medium body thin creamy mouthfeel sweet finish that faded quickly. It’s fine solid kind of brown
2.5 From a bottle, nice brown pour, no sediment. Smells perhaps like a sweeter darker beer. Decent co2 on the uptake and yes it does have a sweeter toffee and caramel feel to it. Almost cloying but not quite. Starts out sweeter then finishes with a nearly typical porter or milder brown ale effect.
3.1 Winter Beer Fest, Philly: Pours light brown with an off-white head. Aroma is caramel, nuts and vanilla (seems like I’m the only one saying this... am I crazy?). Taste is on the sweet and low hop side of the Brown Ale world. Easy drinking. Not bad. It ain’t really my thing though.
3.7 12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. The aroma has sweet toffee notes with nutty smooth peanut butter. The taste is sweet and nutty. Light to medium body and moderate carbonation.
4.0 Great combo of almond , carmel, and toffee. C
3.5 Poured from bottle into Tulip glass a UPS brown, clear with little head and little lace. Aroma was nutty, toffee, malt, cereal. Low carbanation and medium body. Taste was nutty, full of toffee, malt, a little wood. It’s a nice beer to transition into fall. Enjoyed.
3.7 Poured from bottle. Aroma of toblerone. Solid brown with a bit of tan head. Toffee, caramel, malt, nut, lager hops. Could use a bit more carbonation. Not bad.
3.2 Bottle. Brown. Strong butterscotch aroma. Taste adds toffee, peanuts, and almonds. The mouthfeel is thin and light with low carb. Not bad
3.1 From a 12 oz bottle shared at the Beer Heads bottle share in Falls Church. Pours a clear deep amber with an ecru head. Nutty nose. Light toffee flavors.
