Duvel Tripel Hop HBC-291

Duvel Tripel Hop HBC-291

Duvel Tripel Hop is brewed with three hop varieties and each year the third hop is changed to provide its own unique taste and aroma. This keeps the final flavor profile surprisingly exciting for any true beer lover. For 2016 our brewers selected HBC 291 from the Yakima Valley in the USA.

By using three instead of two hop varieties to brew, we obtain additional hop aromas and an increased bitterness. The typical Duvel palate is enriched with HBC 291 hops providing fresh notes of citrus, black pepper, lavender and roses.

HBC 291 hops are added again during ’dry-hopping’, extracting additional hop aromas into the beer. The higher aromatic intensity rounds out the beer, backing the final alcohol content of 9.5%.

4.0 Very pale straw colour with a huge white head. The nose awesome. Zesty, spicy aroma over a bit of grassiness and a touch of zest. There's a lot of pepper and fresh yeasty spice. There's a great peppery and lemony floral flavour on the back. Soft bitterness. Delicious.
4.0 It pours light golden with a white head that has good head retention. There are aromas of flowers and floral elements. The aromas are reminiscent of lavender, citrus, and roses. Also in the background are white wine and a bit of tartness. The flavors are highly complex with lavender, pepper, spice, earthen elements, roses, and a bit of citrus. There is also a slight bit of tartness in the flavor. It has a moderate body with a bit of slickness to it. The bitterness is moderately high. The flowery elements and bitterness last long into the finish. Overall, a highly complex beer with the flavors working well together and no one element dominating the other.
3.0 Appearance: Pours hazy orange with thick and frothy white head, with good lacing. 5/5 Aroma: Malts and yeast, heavy hoppy, with hints of peach, lemon and citrus. 8/10 Taste: Herbs, grass and spice with sourness of lemon and moderate bitter, followed by malts, hops and citrus notes. Citrus hoppy finish, dry and slightly bitter. 6/10 Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, high carbonated. 3/5 Overall 8/20
3.0 Golden pour with a soapy pure white head. The nose is of lemon peel, juniper berries, rue and black pepper. In the mouth it's very perfumed, almost with a soapy taste. I can't help shake the feeling of champagne that has been dosed with gin. There is malt and it has a slight honeyed edge, which is nice, but it gets overpowered by the intense bitterness. A bit harsh really and definitely not the best in the tripel hop range. The alcohol is mostly well hidden and the mouth feel is very champagne like. Finishes on the juniper berries and puckering dryness. HBC-291 might be a divisive beer with people liking its perfumed flavours but I must admit it's not one I'd rush to try again.
3.6 Bottle. Mmmm overall a very pleasing beer and it superbly hids its aggressive 9.5%, I barely noticed it until I felt very much 9.5% affected. You can defnitely feel those hops and it is lovely to experience a kind of hop intensive belgian ale. Nothing crazy here but deeply satisfying.
3.0 12-ounce bottle overflowed onto the counter and floor as soon as I popped the cap (another bottle did the same). Once the outflow of carbonation from the bottle settles, it pours slightly hazy yellow-gold with quickly dissipating off-white head, with some residual lacing. Aroma: honey, floral. Flavor: malt-forward (honey, butterscotch), some barnyard, tangerine, pineapple, mango, melon, and an odd wet cardboard taste (perhaps because bottle is post-date, which I suspect); there's a balancing prickly bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied. For me, not as good as the original, by far.
3.8 Bottle. Clear light golden beer good white head. Aroma: floral, light citrus, pils malt, fruit, pear, light touch of perfume. Taste: strong and warming, with light citrus sourness, alcohol, fruit, pear and lemon, light white pepper, very dry and bitter finish.
3.2 Rating from old records. From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Unusual hop element, quite a twist on the Duvel standard.
3.5 Nice beer. Lovely golden colour with a decent fizz to it but no head, reminds me a bit of a fine Champagne in terms of looks. The taste is of the typical French\Belgian brewer's yeast which is that sweet barley sugar type taste. The hops are quite bitter, but at the same time quite subtle, certainly not like in say a USA IPA. Some lavendar, honey, bitter capsicum and floral (possibly elderflower) aftertaste.
3.2 Where and how: mini tasting – b. 330 ml Aroma sweet, somewhat muted, honey with mellow hops. Appearance : Top: large white top, long lived Base: fine haze on gold Palate : a bit chalky, mid bodied. Taste: muted in character, hint of somewhat funky hops with some alcohol on side. Tad peppery top end. Expected more from Duvel.
3.6 11.2 oz bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, Belgian yeast, mild to moderate floral notes, the lavender comes through, light citrus fruit character, mild bitterness, a slight alcohol bite, good.
3.6 Bottle from Root Cellar. CGC AFRWHMLGL MLCA MBSLTSC MBSF MBSF MD. Exceeded my expectations.
3.4 0,33 l bottle. Pours quite clear yellow with solid snow white lasting head. Aroma is floral, herbal, citrus, peppery, grainy malt, light honey and quite a lot of yeast. Alcohol is hardly noticeable. Taste is medium sweet, light to medium bitter. Body is full and rich, texture is creamy, carbonation is average. Finish is very long, spicy bitterness intensifies as it worms up and it becomes less pleasurable with temperature.
3.9 Good beer. Nice flavours. I missed flavours in the beginning, but then it became more aromatic. Smell like a honey, you can feel the hop! Spicy beer. That makes hoppy lovers happy. Little bit sweet. Bitter, then sweet
3.8 Pours golden with foamy white head. Some familiar duvel malt and hop aroma but with an extra kick of stickiness from goldings. Flavor is well-balanced and clean. Very light, almost pilsner-like malt for a beer of this gravity, Upfront has some mild honey sweetness, flower pollen, a hint of herb-like malt resin that grows and grows throughout. Finish is very mild bitterness, but lasting into the aftertaste, and herb notes. Very cohesive, good texture and palate - presents itself as its own style of hoppy belgian beer, not as some kind of frankenstein hybrid - well done.
3.8 Bottle. Amber beer with a whitish head. Earth and yeast aroma with light citrus and light summer fruit. Yeast and grapefruit flavor with spice and light tropical fruit. Medium bodied. Yeast and malt lingers with grapefruit and light summer fruit.
3.3 Slightly cloudy yellow body, white head. Aroma has banana and alcohol. Light spicy yeasty touch. More alcohol than other years.
3.3 Golden color with a white head, medium retention. Aroma is slightly hoppy with some yeasty notes. Flavor is light bittery at the beginning, belgian yeast presence with some sweet notes in the final.
3.4 Bottle (BB Feb 2018). Head is initially large, frothy/fizzy, white, fully lasting. Body is light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), lightly yeasty (basement), with light notes of concrete, pepper, lemon zest, and alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively/fizzy carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Great appearance starts things off well...extremely sparkling and a very retentive head, almost a 5 for that. Bright floral-herbal aroma is pleasant, and the dry finish is good too. Maybe a bit too much concrete though, kinda industrial tinge going on here that distracts from the rest, which comes back in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is probably the only major gripe here...quite watery and fizzy and pretty obvious/burning alcohol. Pretty solid but overpriced for the quality.
3.7 Restrained citrus floral aroma in a light gold pour. Laid back hop-malt balance with a spicy fruit body and just a hint of bubblegum before a sweet tasty finish that leaves one wanting another.
3.5 Bottle from tripel hop degustation pack bottle N6. Not my favourite but it’s a nice beer. Typical belgian ale but a real hops taste, pleasant, citrus, honey
3.2 Flaska. Klar guldfärgad med ett bubbligt vitt skum. Dofter av citron, blomster och kryddor. Smakinslag av citron, vete, jäst, kryddor och alkohol. Stickig munkänsla. Alkoholen stör mer än berör.
3.3 Na zdrowie, Salud, Kampai, Prost, Skaal, Zivjeli, Fenékig, На здоровь& Na zdravi
3.6 bottle clear orange pour white head aroma is pine citrus and grass taste was semi sweet with a dry hop finish
3.3 A: Pours light straw with a big white head, medium bubbles. N: Lemon curd, some floral touches. T: Full bodied, dry bitterness, slight lemony notes, F: Dry and mildly bitter O: Although I am still not convinced about a highly hopped Belgian, this is pretty decent.
3.5 A bottle from Muzha Jason’s, drunk at home. Aroma: bread and hay. Appearance: hazy, light amber, pours a mountainous rocky head. Palate: full-bodied and sticky, average carbonation. Long and complex, astringent finish. Taste: heavily bitter, pepper from the alcohol. Well-crafted and packs a punch, but I prefer the regular Duvel, need a little more sweetness.
3.5 Appearance: slightly hazy straw. Great fluffy white head Aroma: light citrus, peppery, cut grass. Light clove Palate: medium mouthfeel, high carbonation Taste: citrus dominant. Peppery, spicy. Clean bitterness with warm alcohol and lingering lemon
3.2 Pale straw. Spicy and fruity aroma with mild hops. Strong, lightly sweet and acidic taste, with a spicy and fruity flavour. Boozy. Highly bitter, warming finish. Medium body. Overall, a decent strong ale. I find this one too dry and boozy. Urthel Hop-it is similar, and more balanced.
1.8 In tegenstelling tot de klassieke Duvel is deze tripel hop 2017 niet vol van smaak
3.5 Clear golden head, big head with good retention, good lace. Aroma of hops, tropical fruits, caramel, peaches.Medium body, creamy palate, active carbonation. Taste of hops, caramel, honoey, fruits. Bitter ending.
