Duyck St. Druon de Sebourg

Duyck St. Druon de Sebourg

Formerly known as Sebourg beer, this was rebaptized Saint Druon de Sebourg in 2000.

Malted barley and 3 varieties of hops grown in Alsace form the basis of this recipe, which, unlike Duyck’s other beers, also contains wheat from the Beauce region of France, milled in the traditional way by Sebourg’s miller. And to give it an even more distinctive flavour, the Duyck’s use a specific strain of yeast exclusive to the beer.

St. Druon de Sebourg is the French version of a blonde abbey ale, similar in style to those found across the nearby border in Belgium. It is spicy and effervescent, and much hoppier than typical bière de garde.

2.7 Thanks to kiefdog for the share. Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Nose is caramel, apple, sugar, and yeast. Flavor is similar with yeast and sugar lingering into the finish of this light to medium-bodied beer.
2.9 Poured a hazy yellow/orange with almost no head. Aroma is tart and fruity with some skunky notes. Some yeast also present. Taste is mostly skunky with some rice. Quite a disappointment. The finish has some fruity flavors with vegetables and sweet rice. Overall not what I was expecting, but maybe I should have aged it some more. Crisp and drinkable.
3.2 Clear medium gold color/ viscous off white head. Nice musty, earthy sweet apple, spicy, bready pale malt aromas. light to medium bodied. Rustic sweet flavors of ripe apple, earthy sweet pale bready malts, basement funk, easy finish.
3.1 Dark gold pour. Sweet malt, fruit, bread, yeast, and some banana. Decent.
2.8 Pours a dark yellow color, nose is yeast, alcohol, and some fruity notes. Very tart flavor, alcohol really shows through even though it’s only 6%. Very smooth, light bodied, and a small amount of carbonation. Not bad but not good.
3.2 Bottle 0,75ltr: Golden coloured brew thats tasted pretty sweet in a well balanced way.
3.4 Aroma of tart apples, white grape and honey. Appearance is translucent gold with creamy white head. Flavor matches the nose with a little cherry and oak as well. Palate is bubbly. Enjoyed.
1.2 Corked bottle from Auchan, Marne La Vallee, France. Pours a rich, deep amber sap but that’s where it ends. This beer stinks like a skunk’s ass sprayed with perfume and tastes like the rotten end of a copper monster’s poop chute. This beer sucks. Sucks all the way in every way. Don’t drink this crap.
2.9 A blonde beer with a lacing white head. Aroma is fruity and citric notes. Taste is grainy and fruity with yeast notes. Some bitterness and floral hops in the end.
3.0 Pretty bland. Not much in the way of flavor or aroma. Perchance you may happen upon some malt in a sunlit meadow, but verily I say to you that any thought of flavor is gone in a fleeting moment of whimsical hesitation. Sooth this is my word.
3.1 Draught at TND: Aroma of light herbs, light pale malts, slight grass, and slight yeast. Poured yellow/gold in color with a small, off-white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. No lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of yeast, pale malts, slight honey, and slight herbs. Medium body. Tingly, lightly dry texture. Lively carbonation. Lightly sweet, herbal, yeasty finish is lightly dry.
3.2 Well this one was different. I thought it was a bit bland, and quite unintrusive upon the palate, if one would. Verily I say to you that there was a bit malt, yeast, and hops in this one. Pip Pip.
3.2 Draft at Mike and Molly’s In Champaign IL. Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma of yeast and belgian phenols. Lighter side of medium bodied with an earthy mouthfeel. Flavor of hay, dough, honey, and medicinal phenols. Ok, but nothing worth repeating.
3.0 750ml from Once Upon a Time, Richmond. Golden to orange pour, with pretty minimal carbonation and almost no retention whatsoever. Slight diacetyl in the nose along with some pretty typical fruits and a bit of hefe character. Mouthfeel is watery, very little substantial here. A bit of grain in the taste to go with the pretty generic fruity flavors. I’m thinking this isn’t the freshest bottle, and perhaps some hop liveliness would benefit the beer.
3.2 Light aroma of fruit and spices. Had a very nice taste of spices, wheat, and some yeast. An interesting beer.
2.4 Bottled. Pours honey colored with a small white head. Aroma is slightly sour with some skunk notes. Reminds me of a Grolsch with some funky nutsack and barnyard notes. Flavor is sweet malts that get more sweet as you drink. Medium malt body.
3.4 Bottle. Pours hazy dark yellow with a small, frothy, white head, somewhat lasting with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, meal, straw), light hop (flowers, grass), heavy yeast (dough, horse blanket) with notes of banana, pepper, and butter. Medium bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.
3.2 expected more from a biere de garde, though the aroma was good. The appearance was OK, nothing much. The taste was quite a deception, reminding me of a refined Lager. The body was watery, lively carbonation, metallic finish and light body.
3.0 A solid beer overall but somewhat lacking in flavor in comparison to Belgian abbey ales.
3.2 Lightly clouded gold beer with a white soapy head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma is small and nondescript but offers some yeast and wheat notes. A dry bitterness is the first thing tasted. There is also some bubblegum, spice, pear, and funky earthiness. Peppery feel and that bitterness is long lasting. This style is always interesting and this beer fits right in. Unique but not a great beer.
3.3 . These biere de gardes’s are broad, but kinda paradoxicaly very similar. i’m drinking this right now,. . 1 of the better biere de gardes, just by keeping things real and eazy.
2.6 Its from France! I havent had too many French beer. Meh. To sum it up Id just say "Belgian Lite". Everything is so tamed compared to the beer style it was modeled from. Why would THE wine producing country feel the need to tone down things like aroma, mouth feel, and TASTE in an alcoholic beverage is beyond me. Why?
2.6 11.2 ounce bottle in Duvel glass. Clear pale orange with lasting flat big bubble head and some lace. Mild honey and spice aroma. Honey and apricot melon sweet fruitiness with very mild tabacco bitterness and finishing spice. Light watery body and medium-low carbo. Might have been better in 2005 when it was bottled. I can’t believe how much old beer is for sale in New York. Anyhow, not as good as Leffe and twice the price.
3.2 My notes on the St. Druon are terse, so we’ll keep the review terse too. The smell is soft and yeasty, with a mineral sheen, corn, mushroom and lemon. It makes an interesting combination, especially with the mushroom. The flavor is very boozy and sweet, with the added flavors of wheat and yeast that are so dominant in the aroma. In fact, the whole flavor is on the precipice of being overpowering. Sweet, but the harsh alcohol side makes this a mean beer to sip.
3.1 Bottle. Aroma is mild and smooth. A few hints of wheat. Flavor is hm. Intriguing. Has a distinct flavor, that I can’t quite put my taste buds on. Tastes a bit like an Abbey Ale, only a bit lighter, less malty, and less alcohol flavour. Subtle hints of banana, pear and maybe...hmm....allspice? Coriander? Not sure on this. Pretty good though.
2.3 75 cL bottle. Pours clear and yellow with a lacing white head. Dry cornish and unfermented wort aroma. Flavour is dry and grainy, light spiced. Mild yeasty touch into the finish.
3.6 Thanks to decaturstevo for sharing this one. Clear light gold with a tall, tight white head. Lacing falls apart. A lightly spicy, funky sweet honey aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet with some dryness in the finish. Easy drinking, light bodied.
3.5 Bottle: Strong herbs (cloves and spices) over a sweet malty body. Softens by mid bottle, and then finishes light fruity and candy like. Travelled all the way from France to Brasil to El Salvador and still good. Another good brew from Duycks.
3.1 Golden our with a frothy whith head and lace. Aroma of clover corriander and light pepper. First taste was stale with a little flavor of apple. A wee bit thin with good carbonation. An average beer that tastes a little better as it goes along.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a hazy, light orange with a large pillowy head and aromas of grass, herbs, lemon and fresh flowers. Flavor is fairly sweet, with an apple juice like presence and a spicy/grassy finish. Fairly lively carbonation influences the zesty mouthfeel. Alcohol is a little too detectible.
